There are some people in life who can slow down, who can relax, take the easy life, and find themselves reinvigorated after a long rest. These people work for a while, but when they find themselves inevitably exhausted, must push themselves away. It's an inevitable part of life; work must be done, but the soul, too, must be nourished, and the mind as well. All work and no play don't just make a Star a dull one; it can drive a Star to madness as well.Pacifae wasn't like that, though. She preferred work to rest, vigilance to relaxation, and concentration to distraction. She always had to be in motion, and the constant flow of work, like water over the stones at the beach, was exhilarating to her. Her mind worked as hard as it could, whenever it could, always paying attention. The thrill of the hunt ran through her veins. Well, not the hunt, per say. She wasn't a predator, she was a Star for crying out loud. She had no need to hunt things, honestly, and for the most part, other Stars were a quiet lot; she had no need to hunt them, either. But there was still a thrill to be had in staying alert and fighting. This was the way she enjoyed the world. She was a fighter and a self-appointed guardian. She couldn't turn that off. It was part of who she was.
Well, actually, there was this one Star she did hunt on occasion...nothing ever came of it, because that Star always escaped whenever Pacifae gave chase. Her name was Sedna, and she was a thief. Not of jewelry or other shiny things, no; she was a thief of plants.
That might not sound like a big deal, but some enterprising Novas actually grew plants, farming the algae like land Stars sometimes did with land plants. They nurtured the seaweed, removed urchins and snails and other creatures that ate their crops, kept them safe and harvested them for when the seaweed died off in the winter. But then the Thief would come along and snatch all of the plants. Unacceptable!
So Pacifae was on the hunt, again. She had to find Sedna this time, before she could get away with her ill-gotten gains. Yes, that mare was going down this time, she could feel it!
