The holidays are the best time to eat. Everything always seems to taste better during this time of year, and when you think about your favorite holiday food, it is so easy to dwell on something wonderful that you remembered from childhood. It might be something you think of often, or something you haven’t thought of in years, but when the thought comes into your head, within the next half hour you find the recipe, be it online or folded up in one of your coat pockets. It seems like a wonderful idea to try and recreate your wonderful memories, doesn’t it?
The winter months was normally a time for warm, hearty, foods that filled you up and left you warm for hours. They were homey foods and Alexandre was one who enjoyed such things this time of year. But he hadn’t felt like cooking the last few nights, especially anything which would take time, he was ordering food in from fancy places more often. At least he was ordering food from higher end places so the food was better, at least he figured as much, compared to simple take out places.
It wasn’t something he liked doing though, it just felt less warm and comfortable in the kitchen and the rest of the house, it was one thing he’d always tried to do - home cooked meals. It left the smells in the house and the kitchen, and nearby rooms, warm and it was just better all around. But he hadn’t really been motivated lately.
Tonight though was an odd night, at least it was by currant standard, Alexandre had been out doing some shopping when the desire to cook a full meal hit him like a truck. It was enough to send him to the grocery store to get what he’d need, since he didn’t have things at home. The list in his head was long, but all needed, as he pushed a cart through the store and tried his best to avoid other shoppers. There was a reason he always preferred shopping at night - less people.
It wasn’t that he disliked people but rather than he disliked them getting in his way, they made shopping take longer than needed, he hated trying and make his way down isles with people stopped all over the place and dealing with people nearly walking themself and their cart right into him. Night time, near to closing, was far less busy and it made things quicker. But he had this in his mind and he needed to get things so he could cook tonight!
Going for meat first, as it would take the most amount of time, Alexandre took his time inspecting things so he got just what he wanted. He didn’t want anything with too much fat after all, though some fat was needed. From there he headed towards the produce section in order to grab veggies and he grabbed a few other odds and ends, things he wasn’t planning on getting but they looked good.
It was nearly an hour later that he got home and went to unpack things. Cadha under his feet, as usual, Alexandre started to prepare things. He had in mind a pork dish with mashed garlic potatoes as well as apple cider done onions and herbs to go onto the pork. He had a meal planned in his mind and couldn’t wait to get started - so he could eat sooner.
It was just a shame that Aiden wasn’t around, that they were no more, it meant less to make but it also meant no one to really share the meal with. It was lonely...and this was why he’d stopped cooking most of the time. Even as he cooked his mood bounced between sour to bright and content. He hated this mess. But he’d made the mess now hadn’t he?
