The weather report called for snow, and a lot of it! Overnight, a foot of snow has covered Destiny City in a beautiful blanket of white, and schools and most businesses are closed! When you venture outside however, the air feels almost temperate, and picking up the snow is a lot like picking up some sun warmed sand at the beach. What might have caused this? Is it global warming playing some sort of trick, or just the imps that seem to linger in the city? The strangely warm snow day lasts for only a day though, by the next day, the air is bitterly cold again, and all of that wonderful snow is somehow gone without a trace!
Snow during the winter was reasonable, though when Samir read that they were expecting a foot of it in the morning he found himself in a state of despair. He'd been looking forward to getting some chores taken care of around the Junkyard, maybe even forge a little bit, but a foot of snow?
No, he wasn't going outside in a foot of snow, no matter how badly he wanted to work. The dogs loved it, but he just wanted to stay inside where it was warm. He could find other things to do, not even the forge could make up for a foot of snow.
When he woke up in the morning, a quick glance out the window confirmed the worst--snow. And piles of it.
More than he ever wanted to see in his life. He dragged his feet, glad at least that the house was warm. Morning rituals took all of ten minutes to complete before the dogs were harassing him to be let outside. They were at his heels, nearly toppling over themselves and wagging their tails in front of the door.
Samir braced for the worst when he unlocked the front door, when he slowly, reluctantly peeled it open.
The dogs ran out, as he expected; they loved the fresh fallen snow.
He braced himself for the sharp chill of the winter air but when he was instead met with warmth, he paused.
Samir investigated the air vent above him, wondering what his electric bill was going to be if it was pumping out enough hot air that it could fight whatever chill could summon a snow that great. It gave him the courage to peel open the door a little more.
The anticipation of cold made him bristle in preparation but it never came. Instead, he felt only the pleasant warmth of a late spring day. But early summer, in the middle of winter? Heat like that, that wasn't melting the snow?
Frown on his face, Samir jerked open the door in only his boxers and a worn t-shirt so old that he didn't even know what design used to be on it. The dogs were running around in the snow like they didn't notice it wasn't cold outside, so he braved the front porch and kicked some of the undisturbed snow, expecting to regret it.
He might as well have been at the beach for as uncomfortable as it was.
With more confidence, he planted himself outside his front door and closed it behind himself, trailing after the dogs with renewed interest in the weather. They continued to run around, kicking up the snow. He knelt down to scoop a handful of it into his hands. He had been an expert at forming snowballs in his youth but this was something different; though the snow stuck together, it felt like warm, wet sand more than anything else. He let the ball tumble to the ground, watching as it splattered apart.
When he brushed his hands together, it still fell off like snow.
This? This was something that wasn't going to keep him up at night. This was something he could enjoy.
For all of Destiny City's tricks, this was perhaps the nicest of them. Today suddenly seemed like it might not be as awful as he'd thought.
