Born to a family of scholars in Ecruteak, Lakshmi was brought up in a very principled environment that followed certain scriptures and texts as law. They were part of a clan known as the Bā xià, one of the nine sons of dragon that focused on law, diplomacy, and literature. Lakshmi was always enamored with art and writing. He read fervently every day, always eager to learn something new. This thirst for knowledge extended beyond reading as well. Lakshmi was the type who wished to go and experience things for themselves, not just to read about it. They danced with the kimono girls, sat and meditated by the lake near their house, and practiced martial arts to understand their body and spirit.
As much as Lakshmi enjoyed their life growing up in Ecruteak, they also had some heavy disagreements with their family's principles. The Bā xià took certain matters to an extreme, sometimes violently, and being a pacifist of sorts himself, Lakshmi felt torn between family and true justice. The Bā xià took law into their own hands, and in a way that Lakshmi thought to be irrational. So, with a heavy heart, Lakshmi left his home at the young age of 13 and made a pilgrimage to Mount Silver to the Jiāo tú clan, cutting ties with his family and planning to devote himself to the monastery in the mountains there.
The Jiāo tú were a clan of secrets, knowledge, and self reflection. As such, since his pilgrimage Lakshmi became very isolated and sheltered. He wanted to spend time reflecting on himself and what principles he would uphold, and how he wanted to live his life. There he trained for years, learning to listen to the earth and see the auras of living creatures. During his isolation, he read much of the world outside of the temple walls and learned what he could from the travelers passing through and making their pilgrimage.
It is common knowledge that one who is restrained and in the dark will all the more fervently seek the unknown, and Lakshmi was no different. He thrived on tales of the outside world, and promised that once he had completed his training, he would go out and travel on his own alongside his pokemon companions. Not necessarily as a trainer, but as a sort of pilgrimage of his own, continuing his spiritual journey of self discovery.
