Clouded Dawn bustled about her burrow, tidying it up while muttering to herself. “The middle of winter is a horrible time to wish for kits,” she argued. “It would be too hard to keep them warm, too hard to find them food, too hard to keep them safe from the big hunting birds when there’s no plants to hide under. It’s just the worst season for new kits.” She nodded to herself, sure the argument was sound. And yet…
She paused in gathering up some loose leaves that has blown in to look over at her collection of stones. There were just a few, some small ones that had caught her eye as she was out looking for food. There were a couple smooth river stones, a rock with crystalline bits that sparkled in the sunlight, a pebble with interesting streaks of pink and orange…and the newest one. At first it didn’t look like much. The color was just a flat grey, nothing to catch the eye. But it had some interesting-shaped bumps on it, and if you looked at it long enough, it started to look like a crouching rabbit. It started to feel special.
She’d heard about rocks like these. Legend had it that if you found one of these special stones and offered them to the pool, you might find yourself with a litter of kits. She couldn’t say that she’d ever particularly felt the urge to have kits before, but the more she looked at the stone, the more the idea sounded appealing. It was a little mystery; would it work? Where would the kits come from, since she didn’t have a mate? Would they look like her? She wanted to know the answers so much that it got so they every time she looked at it, she wanted to drop everything she was doing to grab the stone and head to the pool.
She tore her gaze from the stone and shook her head firmly. “No. Not yet. Not in winter,” she scolded herself. “Wait until spring. It’ll surely be much easier to care for them then.”
She gathered up a mouthful of dead leaves and carried them out of her burrow. As she tossed them off to one side, a breeze caressed her muzzle. She took no notice of it at first, but then her nose twitched and she sat up, scenting the air. What was that smell? Was it the scent of warmer winds? Was spring coming? She sniffed the air for a moment, then started to doubt. It was still cold out yet, maybe her nose was playing tricks on her. One slightly warmer breeze didn’t necessarily mean anything.
A second gust kissed her nose, warmer than the first. That was enough for her. She dove inside her burrow, grabbed the stone, then dashed straight off towards Nymph’s Pool.
A little while later, Clouded Dawn approached the pool. Along the way she began to worry that the stone might not be enough of an offering, and had kept an eye out for anything else she might offer with it. There wasn’t much around in winter; no pretty flowers, or interesting leaves, and she didn’t even spot more nice stones. All she found was a funny-looking twig, so she picked it up and brought it along.
She approached the edge of the pool, then hesitated. How did this work, exactly? Tentatively, she placed the stone by the edge of the pool, then stuck the twig in the ground beside it like a tiny tree. She looked down at the offerings, then up at the pool, then slowly around the area. “…Please?” she whispered, not sure who or what she was asking.

Perhaps something caught Clouded Dawn's attention in the distance for a moment. But suddenly there was a lot of rustling in a nearby bush, covered in dead leaves. From the bush burst a single kit, then followed by four more.
