Quote: The holidays are the best time to eat. Everything always seems to taste better during this time of year, and when you think about your favorite holiday food, it is so easy to dwell on something wonderful that you remembered from childhood. It might be something you think of often, or something you haven’t thought of in years, but when the thought comes into your head, within the next half hour you find the recipe, be it online or folded up in one of your coat pockets. It seems like a wonderful idea to try and recreate your wonderful memories, doesn’t it? Holiday shopping wasn’t normally his thing, he simply wasn’t the sort to enjoy shopping, but it was the holiday season and he was somewhat obligated to do some shopping. That was why he’d grabbed Mei to help him, at least she’d make it more tolerable. “I don’t know why these people think it’s ok to suddenly have no manners - they are worse than usual.” He stated, a slight bitterness entering his voice, golden eyes moving towards the blond.
Passing by a cheap chinese restaurant, though he really didn’t think of them as restaurants, Fai couldn’t help the lingering look at one of the pictures in the window. “Dumplings...we should get some before we go home.” Shuffling his feet as he moved along the slush and snow covered sidewalk, thankfully there was no ice to be seen on the side walk, just lots of ice melt. The night before, and into the morning, they'd been hit with a hell of a snow storm which had left a foot or so of snow on the ground. Before the snow had even started shops, before they closed, had started to toss ice melt onto the sidewalks. The city had trucks out coating the roads in deicer and snow melt as well, so the roads weren't as bad as they could have been.
Dumplings would be perfect, especially this time of year, he figured. They were a traditional food for the lunar new year but they also were a big food to eat in the winter. They were so warm fluffy and he did enjoy dumplings - a lot. They would be warming and on a cold day like today they'd be perfect. “Just not there.” He stated with a slight note of distaste, and disgust, entering his voice. That place was the same as you’d find in a mall food court - terrible.

“Dumplings actually sound amazing right now.” Mei’s stomach growled loudly. “Oh man, that makes me miss the one’s grandmother used to make for Chinese New Year.” There would be a table of bamboo steamers laid out with an assortment of dumplings and pork buns. She would spend days working on the gelatine filling that was used in the dumplings and wait until the day of to actually make them. Homemade was definitely the best and brought with them fond memories. Unfortunately, when their grandfather became ill, both grandparents returned to Beijing to be around their other relatives and close friends they had grown up and grown old with. “I heard a rumor that a Din Tai Fung opened up downtown. The one we use to go to back when we lived in Washington,” before her parents decided to sell their home and fly their family clear across the United States. “They were probably some of the best soup-filled dumplings I’ve had at a restaurant.” Plus their food was more like tapa’s style which meant they could get a few other plates to split between them. “Want to see if we can find it?”

"I always miss those, every new years. I tried to get the recipe for the filling but I couldn't." He tried to make his own, with his siblings, but it never was exactly the same. He also couldn't manage to get the dough just thin enough.
"If we don't go home this lunar new y ear we should make our own." And spend the holiday together, of course. It was just expensive to go back to China during the holidays and it took forever. Flights were a pain to get and getting around China was even harder. With so many people returning every year the cities became packed and hard to get around. It was a good time with family though, he enjoyed it a lot.
"You mean the best in the states, because we've both had amazing ones back in China." At least he knew he had. He'd had ones he sought out each time they went to China. "I didn't know they'd opened up here though..." Thinking about it for a moment he nodded his head. "Once we finish shopping we can go. I'd like to get some soup dumplings, they'll be good on a cold day like this." Dumplings always were but especially soup dumplings. "We can split a few dishes as well. Let's finish that shopping, all this talk has be hungry." As if he hadn't already been hungry.

Mei laughed. “Yes, you’re right,” she admitted. “The ones back in China are amazing but the homemade ones are the best.” More so because you could tailor the dumpling to each person’s liking. Add a little bit more seasoning to the broth to change it up a bit or use a different filling other than pork. “I just have one more place to stop unless you want to go by the Hong Kong Market on Pacific Place Boulevard. We can pick up some ingredients now and try making a batch of our own for Christmas?” That was one thing Mei was definitely grateful for. Even though Jasper was no longer in her life it didn’t mean she was alone either. In his absence, it allowed her time to reconnect with her cousin who had, in turn, helped pull her out of the depression she had fallen into. “The only place I need to go is Costco to pick up a few sets of the 32-degree heat leggings while they’re on sale.” For as cold as it has been these last several days, Mei needed something that could keep her warm while exercising outside. Just because there was snow on the ground didn’t mean she skipped on training, it’s one of the reasons she bought shoes with cleats on the bottom. The last thing she needed was to slip and fall on a sidewalk and bruise a tailbone, or worse, break a hip. “The offer still stands on you joining me, I can even get you a pair too so you’ll stay warm.” She tried to sweeten the deal but knew that she was the odd one in the family in that very little stopped her from running at least once a day.

"Let's grab what you needed to first - then we'll go over to the market together. I'm sure there are a few things we can grab there." That market was one of the bigger ones in the asian district in the city, it carried a lot of things you normally couldn't find outside of asia itself. They even could, sometimes, order special items. It might cost more but Fai knew there were some things they could order for customers who were looking for a taste of home which they missed, especially around the holidays.
"We can make dumplings together...your home or mine?" His place where his siblings and parents would likely be, and might even join in on dumpling making, or her home. Either or it was all family to him and Fai didn't much care. Family was good no matter what.
"Ohhh, that's what you need." Nodding his head in understanding. "We'll get those, can't have you freezing." Though why not just get fleece lined ones? He was sure he'd seen a sign outside of Victoria's secret about them, maybe a last minuet idea for his cousin. "If you want I'll pitch in to get your a pair or two more as well." Anything to keep her warm, since he knew she would go out to train no matter what.
Laughing he reached out to ruffle her blond hair gently. "You know I train hard...just not in the same way you do. If you want me to join you I will but I don't need the pants.I have warm clothing. I don't hide from all those senshi duties all the time." Just most of the time, though he was working on it, it meant he had warm winter clothing to go out in. "You should try martial arts though, to help." Something he'd always mention, and tease, his cousin over.

“I know. You were more diligent at it than I was for a time.” There was no hiding the fact that he had made it to super quicker than she had. However, there were circumstances surrounding her earlier years as a senshi that he was not exactly privy to either. Her trust in others of their faction was all but gone by now. First Kalichore then Persephone. The most recent had been Phact and her court. For all she had done for the Senshi of Doves, to be shunted from a group she had helped establish after encouraging the raven-haired woman that she was suited for leadership was nothing shy of a disrespectful disregard of a friendship that inevitably ended as abruptly as the one with her ‘sister’, the Senshi of Prayer. “And I’d get those but,” Mei huffed, combing her fingers through her creme-colored hair to sput the stray strands back into place. “The fabric is too thick to go under most of my jogging clothes and too thin to wear by themselves.” Either get too warm or not get warm at all. Kind of a pick your poison kind of moments because neither sounded fun or appealing.

"I think we should both pick up the training and encourage each other. We make a good team." They were family and had known each other for most of their lives. The fact they were both on the same side of this city wide mess made things easier, though were one of them a knight it wouldn't be too bad, it was easier with them both being senshi.
"Mmm, perhaps those fleece ones for indoor training then. But lets get the ones you need now and then head to the grocery store. Dumplings right now are becoming m ore and more of a need." As it was getting colder out, at least it seemed like it to him.
"We really only need each other in this war." They would make it through this if they had each others backs, he was sure of it. His cousin didn't need some ungrateful team that tossed her out, and moved on, as if she hadn't contributed an ounce to them. He still felt for his cousin though...for her treatment. But he would be there for her - they would be a team.
