Quote:
The weather report called for snow, and a lot of it! Overnight, a foot of snow has covered Destiny City in a beautiful blanket of white, and schools and most businesses are closed! When you venture outside however, the air feels almost temperate, and picking up the snow is a lot like picking up some sun warmed sand at the beach. What might have caused this? Is it global warming playing some sort of trick, or just the imps that seem to linger in the city? The strangely warm snow day lasts for only a day though, by the next day, the air is bitterly cold again, and all of that wonderful snow is somehow gone without a trace!

Jadarite tended to be as efficient as possible about her fieldwork. She was also efficient with her office work, but writing articles required more thoughtfulness, more of a delicate touch, while things like her energy quota required maximum speed and the avoidance of any senshi.

She did like her job, and there was a lot she liked about the Negaverse, too. She had her eye on that General's cape, but she wasn't about to die before she got there.

It took a lot to make her linger, but today something was different. It had snowed so heavily that half the city was closed, which was why she had come out in the first place. She was sure some children wold be out in the park, enjoying their newfound freedom, and she was right. She didn't hesitate then, when she saw a pair of girls who had broken off from any adults to go make snow angels. A minute later, they were sleeping on a park bench and Jada's pockets were pleasantly full of energy.

It was afterwards that she hesitated. Something had seemed strange when she first stepped outside, strangely warm, but it wasn't until she'd stepped off the shoveled pathways and touched the snow that she'd really noticed. Even the snow itself was warm, almost like it was summer instead of winter.

She thought she could feel another officer not so far away, and after a brief internal debate, she walked that direction. Maybe they'd have some idea what was going on, and even if not, she supposed she should branch out a bit from only training with her teammates.

Alpersite, as a rule didn’t try to seek out trouble. Though on a day where the snow was thick on the ground and when it was warm…it was difficult to think that anything in the world could be full of trouble.

He hadn’t been paying much attention to his surroundings, and hadn’t been too worried, far more intent on building a snowman with the thick, easy to pack snow.

There was a grin on the lieutenant’s face and he took a moment, looking at the blank faced snowman, and then summoned his weapon, snapping the two stars from the top of the butterfly’s antenna, using them for eyes. He tugged at the rope loop on his side and put it into a lopsided smile on the creature. After a long moment, he just laughed, richly and loudly.

Finally, finally he felt the other presence coming closer and turned, blinking and grinning to see another officer walking up. She looked…professional, and honestly, Alpersite was glad that the weather was being so strange, or he thought that this other lieutenant would be quite cold with her legs exposed like that.

“Hey there! Strange weather, isn’t it?” He felt just like a kid again.

It took a while for Jadarite to determine the direction of the aura. She hadn't been in the practice of following energy signatures to their sources. Her tracking missions over in England had all been plainclothes ones, and her jobs since had not involved being on the front line in any capacity.

When the aura felt strong enough that it seemed the source was very close, she thought she could make out some sort of shape among the rest of the snow-covered bushes and flowerbeds. She took a few more steps towards it. It was a bit to round o be human, but the wrong shape to be a bush. A snowman? Was it some kind of youma? That was interesting.

She caught the hint of a black uniform behind the snowman. Oh. Closer inspection revealed that there was in fact an agent building the snowman. Her eyebrows lowered a few degrees. Was there some strategy to this, or was this man doing his recreational activities in uniform?

That seemed unwise, but whatever. It wasn't really her concern. She gave the slightest hint of a professional smile as she walked up to him.

"Strange, yes, but I'm finding it suits me," she said. Coming around the snowman, she noticed that its eyes were made of sparkly stars. That was actually pretty cute. She wondered where he'd found them.

She held out a hand. "I'm Jadarite."

Extending his own hand, Alpersite grinned. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Jadarite. I’m Alpersite. What brings you out in weather like this? Just enjoying the snow, or…the warm spell?” He still felt giddy, and hoped that the mood would extend to this other agent…it was always good to make allies. Or, even friends if he was lucky.

“If you wanted, you could help me put the finishing touches on this big guy…or we could make a second one, if you were in the mood. It’s literally not every day—or any day that you can shove your hands into snow and not regret it after a few moments, yeah?”

He laughed, scooping up a handful of the snow and forming it into a ball. “…You don’t have to, but…I think that we deserve some fun too, don’t you? And can you even imagine how big of a snowman we can make while we’re powered up like this? Like, I know it’s not…I don’t know, protocol but…”

Alpersite took a moment to look at the snowball in his hand, warm as a ball of yarn and then gave a sudden, sly smile, throwing it for the other lieutenant. “But it’s fun!”

Jadarite gave a firm handshake and then stepped back to better observe his handiwork. It seemed to be holding its shape, despite the warmth. If this weather kept up, maybe her team could set up some kind of snow party for boosted morale and publicity.

"A pleasure," she repeated back to him, dipping her head ever so slightly. "And yes, I was enjoying the weather."

She considered the offer to build a snowman with a tight lipped smile. Should she? On Negaverse time? Still, she didn't say anything until a ball of oddly warm snow hit her square in the chest and splattered. Jada looked down, eyes narrowing. It wasn't cold or wet. It was like someone had dumped a handful of powdered sugar onto her jacket. Now that-

That was useful target practice.

"Fine," said Jadarite, something glinting in her eyes as she ducked behind the snowman for cover. "On one condition. If you beat me in a snowball fight," she peeked around the edge for just long enough to throw her own snowball, "I will help you build a snowman."

He grinned at the ultimatum. “Yeah. Yeah I can do that.” Alpersite let out a surprised laugh as her snowball hit him squarely in the face and he shook his head to get the excess snow off. “Cruel! You can't throw before we’ve declared battle.”

...Even though he had done the exact same thing not a moment before.

“I’d like to see you land another hit on me, if we’re doing this...it’s on!”

He grabbed another handful of snow, packing it together with some speed, though paused. “...Or, should we take a moment to get stocked up? You have cover and I don’t, so you’re already ahead of me, Jadarite.” There was something...exhilarating about the day. If the weather was a product of global warming..so be it. All of the fun of snow without the frostbite seemed like a good deal so far as he was concerned.

The lieutenant let loose the snowball in his hand, laughing and reaching to begin making more.

Jada cocked a half smile without shifting to look at him, feeling fairly secure behind her snowman cover. "Perhaps you should have considered your situation before you declared it 'on'," she said.

At least he seemed to have some concept of tactics.

Jadarite had never done snowball fights as a child. It was a miracle to get a dusting of white in her hometown, and at that point, she'd usually be inside with her games anyway. She still knew that cover was important, but having snowballs to throw was arguably more so, and so she leaned down to pack up another only to find one flying at her.

She was ready this time and lunged away, still trying to keep the snowman between them.

"You're not going to catch me unaware again," she said as she finished packing the snowball. The warmth was still odd, but that was currently the least of her worries.

She tried throwing it at him while he was gathering more.

“Ah well.” Alpersite gave a laugh and lobbed another snowball, right before hers hit him in the face. “...That’s obviously tomorrow’s problem, isn’t it? Besides.”

He sent another one at her, having had the foresight to make two. “It’s kind of fun not to have a plan for things. Half the time plans get messed up anyway, yeah? Honestly, that’s why there’s my job. I work at an insurance office, and let me tell you. This city is rather fantastic for that. And the unexpected always seems to happen so…”

He shrugged and scooped up more snow, trying to stockpile this time, not wanting her to get the upper hand.

“You’ll always be caught unaware at some point! That’s just how things are, is what I'm saying.”

Jadarite was, in fact, caught unaware again.

The first snowball she saw coming at her and managed to intercept it with her wrist. The second one came out of nowhere and hit her straight in the face, leaving a fine splatter of slowly melting snowflakes across her glasses so that she couldn't see.

There was little she could do except growl and toss a half-formed ball of snow at Alpersite, or at least of the blur of black and blue that sat where she assumed Alpersite was.

With her vision taken out, her chances of winning this snowball fight were much lower, especially considering Alpersite's stealth, foresight, and perfect throwing technique.

"To have insurance is to have a plan for the unexpected, is it not?" asked Jada as she raised a hand in surrender so that she could wipe off her glasses.

"Also, I concede. Please show me what you had in mind for this snowman."

Alpersite laughed softly, grinning at her and crossing the distance between the two of them. “I have a sleeve, if you need me to help you wipe those off for you.” He held up the harm that had the random frills hanging out of them. “Sadly there’s not much else I can offer…but as far as the snowman…”

He shrugged. “Something fun, I think. Or cute. Or just.”

The lieutenant shrugged. “Just something. This was a lot of fun, and I hope we can do it again sometime, if you’d be interested. It’s nice to have people you can have fun with.”

Jada could see just well enough to make out the dry fabric of Alpersite's sleeve that he was holding out. She took him up on the offer to use it to wipe her glasses, and she nodded in thanks.

In most cases, Jadarite-- Emilia --The classy, driven young professional, would not have admitted that things as childish as snowball fights and building snowmen was fun.

Alpersite was smiling at her so sweetly, though, and she didn't think he would care. More importantly, she did not think he would tel anyone.

"It was fun, training with you," she said, even if she said it very quietly.

Looking over the snowman he'd been working on, she decided that since she was helping with this, it was going to need some more glitz. She tugged the golden buttons off of her own jacket and pressed them into the snowman's chest.

He grinned at her, feeling pleased. It had been fun. And now the snowman was fantastic. “We should do it again sometime, if you’d be up for it…though I doubt we’d be able to find such strange weather again, but…if you ever need help, let me know. We’re allies in all of this so…” Alpersite shrugged and patted the head of their snowman.

“We shouldn’t have to go it alone if we don’t have to. It was fun training with you too. I’m glad that we got a chance to.”

This is how training should be. Fun…and friendly and…just relaxed.

Jadarite stepped back to admire her handiwork, satisfied with the final look of the snowman.

She was also satisfied with the rest of the situation. She'd made a new connection and gotten a good mental and physical workout.

The fact that she had lost the snowball fight was not ideal, but it was fixable.

Since he was offering to train some more, someday, they would do this again. They would have another snowball fight, and at that point, she would annihilate him.

"Yes, we should train more," she told him, her smile edging to the side. "Although, I've got to get going for now. See you then, all right?"

And with that, she turned back towards her apartment.
