- Genjutsu (幻術, Literally meaning: Illusionary Techniques) is one of the main jutsu categories which uses chakra. Unlike ninjutsu, the effects of genjutsu are not real, being only sensory illusions experienced by those who fall victim to it. According to the Second Mizukage, genjutsu falls under the broad category of Yin Release.
A genjutsu is created when a ninja controls the chakra flow of a target's cerebral nervous system, thereby affecting their five senses; this is frequently used to create false images and/or trick the body into believing its has experienced physical pain. It is further explained in the anime that, because genjutsu affects activity throughout the prosencephalon structure of the brain, humans, dogs and other species of mammal are therefore all affected by genjutsu; however, the kikaichū, like all insects, lack such a structure to their brains, and so do not even notice it: as Shino Aburame put it, insects are ruled almost solely by their senses alone, which makes them immune to genjutsu and gives the Aburame clan an ability to detect it, even when heightened senses become succeptible
Genjutsu can also be used to manipulate others - similar to brainwashing - by feeding the victim illusive suggestions. Methods include integration with nature transformation, as shown with Water and Lightning Release, and in the anime, ingesting special pills that activate when the target sleeps. Audible genjutsu is deemed the most dangerous because the user can trap victims from long distances.
Despite its usefulness, genjutsu is rarely employed, most shinobi preferring the real, tangible effects of ninjutsu and taijutsu over the imagined effects of genjutsu. The difficulty of performing genjutsu in the first place presents an additional barrier to its use: genjutsu require precise chakra control in order to manipulate the target's senses and advanced intelligence to make the illusion convincing. Those under the influence of genjutsu will either appear to be unconscious or continue to move around under the pretence of the genjutsu. The latter is very effective in battle as a genjutsu user can make themselves appear to be somewhere else and attack the victim from behind or change the environment to make the victim see a flat plain where there is a steep cliff.
XXX｡｡｡Combating Genjutsu
You are permitted to exert your chakra equal to the stat amount of the character's "Perception" to escape the genjutsu. As you increase your abilities as a shinobi your proficiency also increases. Dependent on your character's rank, it may take you a bit longer than others to break out.
If the target is of Genin rank or lower, if their Perception stat equates to or is lower than the jutsu prowess stat of the jutsu caster post-realization, the target will take 3 posts to break out of genjutsu. However, they will still suffer from the effects until post is complete.
If the target is of at least Chūnin rank up to Jōnin, if their Perception stat is higher than the jutsu prowess stat of the jutsu caster post-realization, the target will take 2 posts to break out of genjutsu. However, they will still suffer from the effects until post is complete.
If the target is of at least Jōnin-Commander rank up to Kage, if their Perception stat is higher than the jutsu prowess stat of the jutsu caster post-realization, the target will take 1 post to break out of genjutsu. However, they will still suffer from the effects until post is complete.

- ✦ Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique
xxxThis technique subjects targets to visions of their greatest fear, regardless of whether or not they're aware that they're afraid of it. This "fear" can be something that the target is actually scared of or merely the one image that they least want to see.

✦ Mist Servant Technique
xxx This technique creates several ghost-like figures clad in black that emerge from the surrounding environment. The figures are somewhat similar in appearance to him, but are not his exact lookalikes in the same that other clone techniques resemble their users. The black figures move slowly towards their target, provoking the target into attacking. Each time the figures are struck, the attacks pass through them, only briefly disfiguring their form. With each attack they receive, the figures multiply.
Because this is only a genjutsu, the black figures cannot do any actual harm to their targets. However, if users - while hiding nearby - coordinate their attacks with the figures', such as by secretly throwing kunai along the same trajectory, targets may not realise the kunai are real and thus won't know to dodge until it's too late. Even if targets can avoid damage, being subjected to this sort of tactic for prolonged periods will inevitably wear them down, making them easy to finish off

- ✦ Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
xxx This technique layers an illusion over a location, causing it to look like a different location. Because of how wide an area the illusion can be placed over, that in turn makes it easy to trick others: any who enter the area will be affected by the illusion and see the false location. But to create an illusion on such a large scale and to potentially deceive so many people raises the chances that the trick will be discovered by someone who is familiar with genjutsu.

xxxThis technique causes a target or targets to, while walking in what they believe to be a straight direction, instead walk in circles. As is typical for genjutsu, the targets are unlikely to notice that they're doing this, causing them to waste time and energy as they wander about.

- ✦ Demonic Flute: Phantom Sound Chains
xxxThis genjutsu is performed with a flute. Because it is transmitted via sound, it is effective against long ranges, working even on those whose location the user does not know. Whoever hears the flute is subjected to an illusion of their limbs being bound, preventing them from being able to move. They are also subjected to morbid visions, weakening them mentally until they finally lose consciousness.

✦ Demonic Illusion: Steaming Multistoried Building
xxxA wide-range genjutsu (広範囲幻術, kōhan'i genjutsu, Literally meaning: wide-range illusion technique), whereby Gengetsu, in conjunction with his summon, is able to manifest realistic mirages using the mist exuded by the clam. As it is impossible for observers to distinguish from the real thing through normal methods, this property makes the technique ideal for concealing the actual location of either individual, resulting in confusion amongst the opposition as their attacks are rendered ineffective and they attempt to ascertain the pair's true positions. However, in order to maintain the illusions, the clam must continually exude the mist from its siphons, throughout the duration of the technique.
The only method to end the technique is to defeat the real clam, but as the creature itself remains camouflaged within the mirage, this is no easy task, even if the summoner is providing beneficial advice. While the technique is in effect, both the user and the clam cannot be sensed through traditional means, with the exception of contact type methods.

✦ Demonic Illusion: Tree Binding Death
xxxThe target experiences the illusion of a tree coiling around them, preventing them from moving. Because targets are immobile yet still conscious, this technique is a useful way to perform interrogations. Alternatively, users can simply kill the immobilised targets

✦ Wind Release: Sand Cloud Whirlwind
xxxThe user creates a dome-shaped sandstorm which surrounds the opponent and hinders it from escaping. During the technique's execution, the used sand particles collide against each other, thus creating electro-magnetic waves which place the trapped person under never-ending genjutsu in the form of characterless beings attacking with kunai. While the target is busy fending these illusions off, it is vulnerable for attacks from the outside.

- ✦ Bringer-of-Darkness Technique
xxxThe user places a hallucinatory darkness on a target's eyesight, causing them to see nothing but black; Tō no Sho likens the sensation to being at the bottom of a deep hole. Because the target cannot see, they are very vulnerable to attack. This technique is insurmountable, making it difficult for targets to get out even with heightened senses. The technique can dissipate if either target manages to break out or manages to find the user and force them to release the technique.

✦ Temple of Nirvana Technique
xxxEverybody within an area is subjected to the same illusion: many white feathers fluttering down from the sky. If a given target sees enough of these feathers fall, they will fall into a deep sleep. Because it's a genjutsu, victims cannot be woken in conventional ways, meaning they will continue to sleep even if extensive combat is going on around them.
Only by dispelling the genjutsu, such as with the Genjutsu Cancel, can victims regain consciousness. If targets are attentive enough, they can similarly dispel the genjutsu themselves before the feathers have lulled them to sleep.

✦ Demonic Illusion: Descending Hell Technique
xxxThis technique causes the illusion of a tremendous ball of fire falling from the sky into a designated area. The targets involved in the illusion literally feel the ball's hot temperature getting closer.

✦ Water Release Genjutsu: Demonic Phantom Fog Prison
xxx After the user performs the necessary hand seals, the Conch King opens its shell and releases a mist that puts the opponent under a genjutsu. In the genjutsu, the Conch King licks the opponent until they're frozen, which results in the opponent being overcome with fear and going into a mental breakdown in a matter of time. The power of the genjutsu was greatly increased by the magnetic forces of the trees surrounding the swamp they were in.

xxxA very strong genjutsu that allows the user to put an opponent under an illusion using only words and speech. While under the effects of the genjutsu, the target can be easily swayed of their will and self-assurance. The illusion cannot be easily broken, even when the person is under realisation that the genjutsu is in effect, but strong emotional connections, like love, can help in dispelling it.
