Warren RedeemedThe Spook in the Forest
Halloween may be over but something very strange has been left behind....
Captain Maze first caught sight of the odd phenomenon when she went out to patrol the borders of Bramblefell on the first early, foggy, windy morning of autumn.
As she hopped through the forest floor, she heard a whisper of sound ahead of her. Her sharp ears immediately picked up the tail end of a moan and her eyes narrowed as she stalked toward the disturbance. A shadow to her right.... she tensed.... she pounced.... and nothing. Her jaw ticked as she caught the faintest flash of something disappearing behind a tree but when she went to look, there was nothing there. Not even a foot print.
Now Captain Maze prides herself on being an excellent tracker but this has her stumped and she does not appreciate some strange... creature, roaming around her King's warren unchecked. She is not so full of pride that she doesn't know when to ask for help, and so an urgent message was spread throughout Bramblefell, urging those interested to seek out and discover what strange things were happening in the forest.

You step out into the dark forest, a heavy fog blanketing the trees. The message passed down through Captain Maze has intrigued you and you are eager to get started. As you hop into the treeline at the edge of Bramblefell, you can see two clear paths ahead. Even though the sun has not yet set, the fog filters everything with a gray haze and both paths are made even darker. The path to the left is riddled with jagged rocks sticking up through the rough forest soil. It winds into the trees and you can only see a few feet of it before it seems to disappear behind a large trunk. The path to the right is more visible and free of forest debris, but the soil looks wet and sticky, more like mud than solid ground. You can't see any tracks in the earth, but there does seem to be something sticking up through the mud further down the path, though you can't make out what it might be.

Dust rising was an eager kit, he was ready to explore and prove his worth among his siblings. It was hard being one of many kits roaming around Bramblefell these days. He kinda faded into the background and really was never noticed. Some of his siblings had been taken in by other members of the warren but Dust was on his own and he liked it that way. It was lonely though so he felt if he could get some recognition here helping then he'd finally not feel so alone. He was quick to take up the task tracking. He eyed the two paths and honestly wasn't sure what to take. The mud looked like it could be deep and he was a little kit after all. The other path looked sturdier but less travelled. He eyed his choices before heading down the jagged path and away from the mud.

Brisk sat staring off into the trees, flicking his little ears and looking miserable. He had been much too scared to say anything when the stern and creepy captain had told the other bunnies about some sort of spooky stuff happening in the forest. It may be that they didnt HAVE to go look, but he was pretty sure saying no to that one was not a for reals option. Other bunnies were there, and would see if he ran away like a scaredy-bun, so he sighed and started toward the muddy path. Maybe he could splat around in that and have some fun instead... Malva had been lounging in relative comfort in the warren when word had reached her. Captain Maze needed assistance and Malva saw an opportunity. Impress the Captain, maybe move up. Certainly it couldn't hurt.
Have reached the treeline Malva stopped to ponder. And then she caught sight of the muddy ground. Hard pass. To the right!

You hop cautiously into the dark path of rocks. It only takes a few bounds before you are turning with the natural curve and the light of the clearing is behind you. Everything seems to get quieter as the trees close in. The path is little more than a rut in the ground, and the jagged rocks create a painful and irritating obstacle. As you are picking your way along, trying your best not jab your tender paws, you hear... something. It almost sounds like a flapping? You can't quite tell where it is coming from. Up ahead in the darkness the jagged trench forks around a large, gnarled tree trunk.

You try to hop along the path but your little paws keep getting sucked down into the the thick mud. It isn't long before you are completely covered in brown smears and splatters. It's slow going but you are managing to wade through the muck and finally make it to this weird little twig that is perfectly jutting up from the mud. It doesn't look like it came to be there naturally, and you look around for any sign of how it came to be there. To your right, you see a smear of mud leading into the forest, and to your left you see what might be part of a paw print leading into a clearing, but you can't be sure.

Brisk tries shaking the mud off so energetically he topples over. It's a lost cause, he is just mud all over. He squelches forward and peers at the smudge of mud, then spots the could-be paw print. Hmmm.... do spooky things leave paw prints? He's not sure, but the smudge in the other direction couldn't have gotten there itself, so he shrugs and hops deeper into the forest to investigate. Malva reached the fork, carefully navigating between the jagged rocks. She was extra careful to ensure her ears weren't being caught on anything. A few more hops and it was clear it was time to make another choice ... She glanced right, then left. Left. That seemed best.

As you bound onward along the left fork, the flapping sound seems to get stronger. It also seems to be picking up pace as if whatever it is has sped up. You are determined to find the source of the flapping. Sure, it might just be a bird, but maybe it isn't. The path eventually comes to a stop at a huge boulder. It looks like you can either try to hop up over the boulder, or squeeze through a gap underneath where it rests against some tree roots.

You head off to the right and slip past the large tree, careful not to jab yourself o the rocks which seem to have increased in number, great. The path is becoming more and more difficult to manage. You can still hear the flapping sound but it is getting faint, though it also seems to be more frequent. Up ahead you can see a source of light filtering through the trees, but you also can see that the jagged path continues on into the deeper forest. Should you keep going into the forest? Or should you go check out where that light is coming from?

RedeemedYou unstick yourself from the gooey mud and push your way into the thickets of underbrush in the forest. The smear of mud seems to continue and you spot more mud on a tree up ahead. You also happen to be leaving a bunch of your own mud smears. As you near the tree, you spot a huge clump of mud stuck to the trunk. You hop closer to investigate it and.... jerk back when a HUGE beetle bug morphs out of the mud. That thing is bigger than your head!! It is covered in mud, making it look like a clump, and it clacks its little pincers at you, making a low buggy hissing sound. You get the point and back away from the angry mud bug.

Malva regarded the bolder. It was certainly larger than she was. Could she scale it? ... Maybe. But certainly her ears would get in the way. She took a deep breath and considered the small space below it. Throwing her eyes back she approached the space under the bolder and attempted to get through.
