Quote:
Day One: During this time of year, the shadows are always growing longer and darker. Ordinarily, it's not something you think about, but for some reason there is something strange about the shadows this year. When walking through the shadows in Destiny City, it feels cold, or maybe even like the shadows briefly clutched at you. You may feel sluggish when passing through them, or you may feel drained or even unnecessarily anxious. It may be easy to brush off at first, but it's certainly unnerving.

Things weren’t the best between himself and Aiden, he could feel it in the air, but he was trying - he really was. Alexandre didn’t want things to end, even though it certainly felt like it was going to happen, so in an effort to perhaps ease things and maybe even start mending things he’d decided on lunch out. He could have cooked, it wasn’t that hard, but maybe some time out would be nice.

The air felt chilly, enough that he was in a sweater, and the leaves were turning color and littering the ground. Fall was here and Alexandre was happy about it, he loved the colors and the cooler temperatures. Unsure what to say, or where to even start, the ashen blond kept close to Aiden as he held onto the others arm.

“I was wondering...would you want to go to a few haunted houses this month? Enjoy the season before winter sets in?” He might not like spiders, and those places were bound to have some, but he was likely to be too distracted by other, bigger, things. Haunted houses are something he didn’t really go to, once in a blue moon, but this year he really did want to go and enjoy himself. Maybe they could spend the time together and rekindle things...somehow, he was hoping.

Aiden, on his part, had been completely lost in his own thoughts that he didn’t even realize that Alexandre had started speaking. His mind, at some point, had registered the added weight hanging onto his arm when his boyfriend had looped his arm through his own.

He had felt so disassociated from the moment that when he looked down at Alex, his face looked completely blank. “Do what now?” he asked, brows knitting together he seemed somewhat confused, disoriented even, but at the very least Aiden definitely looked tired.

“I was just wondering if you wanted to go to a few haunted houses this month.” Since after Halloween they’d all close right up, and he wouldn’t mind going to a few, but Aiden looked tired and he’d been going out a bit more often on his own. He was busier, more than he expected him to be, but he didn’t ask since he had his own secrets. “It’s ok if you don’t want to.” Wanting to offer an out to the other, somehow it felt wrong to assume Aiden would want to go and do anything with him. Things felt so...stiff.

Maybe he should have told Aiden years ago, when they first started dating, they wouldn’t be here now. He wouldn’t be second-guessing himself and giving the other such an out.

I didn’t think he cared much for haunted houses… it had been years since they went to one because as the days grew closer to Halloween the more odd things started to happen around them and Alex almost always came home hurt in some way.

“With how busy you’ve been are you sure you’ll have time?” It wasn’t a no, but then again it wasn’t a yes either. If anything Aiden was kind of deflecting. It wasn’t that he wasn’t interested in going. Rather, he was apprehensive about making plans knowing that the inevitable would happen and Alex would disappear or be pulled away.

As they continued to walk down the sidewalk, Aiden could feel a cold chill seep through his clothes and even though Alexandre was holding on to his arm, he could feel no warmth from his boyfriend as goosebumps prickled his skin beneath his long-sleeved sweater. Perhaps he was just simply coming down with a cold or flu, that would at least explain his dispassionate or uncaring mood.

Ouch, that hurt but perhaps it was deserved. He knew he was neglecting things and that his secret keeping was just hurting things, he should have seen this coming from the beginning, but he’d hoped it wouldn’t turn out like this.

“I’m not that busy. I don’t have to put in as much time as I do.” Not when it came to his civilian job at least. Being a Negaverse General was a different story however, that did take up time, but he couldn’t exactly tell Aiden that. It sounded like Aiden didn’t want to go though, so he should drop the topic for now, this all seemed like a failure and he didn’t want to push things right now. He didn’t want a fight between them, he was trying to avoid that at all cost, because he knew if they had a fight it would all end and he wanted to cling to this for just a bit longer - he was selfish.

Shivering he shifted just a bit closer to the other, he’d just felt colder than he did now...odd. Maybe he should start pulling out his winter coats sooner? It seemed like things were getting colder than usual for this time of year, and some people said global warming wasn’t a thing.

Passing through another shadow, not that he took note of it, Alexandre could swear he felt held back for a split second, like something was gripping him. How unusual. Shivering some more he glanced up at Aiden, his own blue eyes seeking out the others much bluer ones. “It’s ok if you don’t want to, it was just an idea.” He would, if Aiden didn’t want to go, stay home and carve some pumpkins in the kitchen. He liked to decorate for Halloween and Christmas, as both were good excuses for candles to decorate the house.

The tighter Alex’s hold on him became, the heavier Aiden’s limbs felt. Normally it wouldn’t have phased him but for some reason, as they continued to walk through the shadows of the trees and buildings, it felt more and more like he was leaning to the side and was about to fall over.

Aiden wanted to pull his arm free if only to reclaim some semblance of balance while he walked but for now, he refrained from doing so if only to keep the peace between them.

“If you’d like to go to a haunted house, we can go. Just-” He paused, pinching the bridge of his nose with his free hand Aiden stopped. He looked down at his boyfriend, blue-grey eyes met those of slate and with a sigh, he added a stipulation. “Just don’t abandon our plans last minute.” Otherwise, he couldn’t guarantee that he would be there when Alex got home.

If Alex got hurt again because he ran off to do God knows what, then he would have to find someone else, perhaps his cousin even, to stand by his side because Aiden didn’t have enough room in his heart to care anymore.

"I won't - I won't abandon them." For a moment he wanted to say he wouldn't abandon Aiden, because he wouldn't. But he knew it looked like he did, a lot, but he was trying to make things better in the city, even if it didn't look like it, and he wanted the war to end. He didn't want to be an old man still fighting. He wanted to one day settle down, at least as much as he wanted to, and not have to worry about senshi or knights or other things happening.

"Aiden, does it feel colder than it should?" Having just finished walking through another shadow, not that he'd noticed, and shivering as he did so. "It feels colder every so often - like cold patches." Which wasn't exactly normal, not really anyway. Something felt off, though maybe with fall being here he was just being paranoid. He really hoped this fall wouldn't be so bad, he didn't want to deal with enormous bats, spiders, and other things. He wanted a normal Halloween this year, just stay at home giving out candy while being dressed up himself.

“A bit,” he admitted.

Until Alex mentioned it, he assumed that he was the only one feeling off or under the weather. But it seemed he wasn’t the only one having trouble warming up. That at least explained why Alex was acting more cuddly than usual while they walked down the street.

“There should be a cafe a few blocks away. We can go in there and get something warm to drink.” Something else warm to hold onto and keep his hands and mind busy. Perhaps being around other people would help lighten the mood since this alone time they were having was doing more to make him feel antsy than relaxed.

"That sounds like a good idea, it's too cold at this point." And he didn't like the idea of having a nasty chill he couldn't shake, he might wind up needing a hot bath when they got home. It wasn't a bad idea either way in all honesty, considering it might help him relax. The idea of going out, together, didn't seem to be going so well.

"The haunted houses....when we go. Just keep close. The last few autumns it's been weird." Like with the bats, he still couldn't believe one had gotten him that bad. He was a General! How the hell one had dropped him was beyond him. "Just incase..." Incase anything happened, he didn't trust things, he wanted to keep Aiden safe even if things weren't working out so well right now.

Falling silent, as he couldn't think of anything else to say, the blond kept at Aiden's side until they reached the cafe. Moving forward, letting his hold on the others arm slacken, Alexandre went to open the door for them both. The heavy smell of coffee, tea, and warmth filled the place and caused a shiver of warmth to race up his body and warm him just a bit. Oh! That was nice, really nice, and he didn't feel as cold. The place was packed, as he expected they would be, but there were still places available to sit and have a drink or two.

Aiden, like the gentleman he was struggling to be, walked Alex to the front counter where the cashier smiled at both of them.

“What can I get for you?” She asked by way of greeting.

Normally he perceived the expression as nothing more than a mask meant to hide their destain for both his and Alex’s open relationship. Neither were cowed by the perception of others nor had they ever really cared for their opinions. However, this woman, despite how skeptical he felt about how much longer the two of them would last, Aiden felt like the barista’s smile was more genuine than Alexandres’ request to go to a haunted house.

What the hell is wrong with me...? He mentally berated himself.

For years he had wanted to, and tried to, keep Alexandre safe. But it was like he had constantly been held an arms reach away. Yet here Alex goes, saying the same thing as before about wanting to keep him safe.

It was all very backward.

“Yes, may I get your Pumpkin Spike Caramel Macchiato?” He looked down at Alex and waited for him to offer up his order so they could take a seat.

As people became more, and more, accepting of all different couples it seemed looks they got were nicer but he'd never cared much either way. This one seemed genuine and he wasn't all too surprised, a lot of younger people seemed to trip over themselves to be nice to those who were lgtb, and it did bother him a bit..like an itch he couldn't scratch. Alexandre had never been one to announce what he was, he didn't care what people thought but it also wan't something he showed off either, it had always just been a simple piece to a puzzle of sorts. People seemed to make it a much bigger, more important, piece now a days.

Smiling as much as he could, despite that itching sort of feeling, he greeted her gently before giving his own order. "Espresso with pomegranate syrup, please." His usual order, nothing out of the ordinary there yet so much else was unusual and wrong.

"I think I saw a table that way." Turning and pointing as he let go of Aiden's arm in order to do so. Hopefully the table would stay empty as they waited for their drinks, this place was rather popular and filled up fast.

As the warmth of the cafe seeped into his bones, Aiden could feel his anxieties and worry ebb away albeit slowly. I must be getting sick it was the only thing that could really explain his mood swings.

“Go ahead and see if you can get a table. I’ll bring the drinks when they are ready.” Aiden placed a hand on his boyfriend’s upper back and gave him a nudge forward so he didn’t put up a debate and try to wait with him.

For all the s**t Alex had been putting up with him over the last few days, Aiden felt an emmense amount of guilt weighing down on his shoulders. And so, once he saw the ashen blonde take a seat, he re-approached the cashier and ordered a warmed cinnamon roll for them to share.

Something nice and sweet to hopefully lighten the mood. Alexandre was trying, so he owed it to him to at least give it one more go.

A few minutes later their order was called. With a thanks he picked up the drinks and with the pastry in hand he wove his way between tables and chairs to over where Alex was waiting. “One espresso with pomegranate.” The cup was set in front of his boyfriend and the plate was placed in the middle of the table before Aiden took a seat.

“Hope you don’t mind if we split it.” He could have purchased two but wasn't really hungry enough to finish one on his own.

"Thanks." Aiden didn't have to, he could have waited as well, but with a nudge from Aiden the ashen blond went off to find a table. A able with less people around was preferred, he didn't want to deal with people. Maybe, just maybe, things could start to mend themselves while they talked over hot drinks. He knew things wouldn't be fixed all in one date, it was impossible, but maybe this would be a start. He'd been trying lately, a lot. It was warm in the cafe, really warm, and as he sat his coat came off as well as his gloves.

Fiddling wit his phone, rather than sitting doing nothing but wait, Alexandre glanced about at the people every few moments. Most of it was the usual sort of thing you'd find in a cafe. People on dates, some just escaping the cold, others obviously on a break from work. Nothing unusual and that was good, especially considering the time of year.

Looking up as his drink was set down, wide eyed at the surprise cinnamon roll. "Thanks, and I don't mind. I'd prefer sharing." Since he wasn't much for sweets so he'd never finish it on his own. Ohh - it looked warm though and smelled good.

"It's nice in here, better than outside. It feels like the cold weather came earlier than last year." It seemed summer hadn't lasted nearly as long as it should, and it hadn't been as hot either. He had a feeling winter was going to be absolutely frigid.

“The cold I can deal with,” His wonder was far more fridged than it was here in Destiny City. A river of ice frozen solid with small towns or villages clustered together along the banks. From one of his last memories, he recalled that the Slidr river wasn’t always blanketed with ice, rather the water that flowed from Mimsburner, the well of knowledge, use to be a mode of transportation for many.

“What I can’t stand is working dark-to-dark shifts. Things at the restaurant are so busy that I barely get much of a break to go outside. Same thing for the pool.” The windows at the City’s Aquatic Center were mounted high and while some light did seep in, it really wasn’t enough.

Perhaps that was also something that was contributing to these mood swings he was having, some sort of vitamin imbalance that was making him more irritable than usual. I need to pick up some banana’s or oranges later. Aiden made a mental note then used the side of his fork to cut off a piece of the cinnamon roll and took a bite.

"I like the look of the cold...of snow. I can't handle it so well." He had little body fat and it didn't do a thing to keep him warm ,or so it seemed, and it assured that he was bundled up whenever the cold weather set in. His bed had always been covered in blankets as well. Summer wasn't his favorite season either, he burned in the sun and there were only so many layers of clothing he could remove. Either season had it's ups and downs but right now he was hating on the winter; as it was the currant season.

"I wish you didn't have such long hours. You should see about cutting back a bit, spend some more time out of work. It's not like we can't afford it." They could, easily, afford Aiden not working so much. He did enough on his own to support things nicely.

Watching Aiden go for the cinnamon roll prompted him to go for a fork full as well. "Maybe some time off will help things, time to decompress and unwind." To spend some time as he wanted, rather than working. It was why he didn't take home his Negaverse work more than he had to, why he didn't involve Aiden. Aiden was his normalcy and the bit that was untouched by it.
