spaceJeremy was born to a hastily married pair of high school sweethearts, Bob Langdon and Lynn Stafford. While his mother and father cared about one another deeply, the pregnancy had very much not been planned, and neither had intended to get married in the middle of college, either. Due to their religious faith and conservative families, however, a shotgun wedding ensured that Jeremy was not born out of wedlock. Lynn dropped out of school to care for their infant son, permanently abandoning her dreams of becoming a doctor, and Bob worked hard to graduate early and then worked for the next seven years as a producer for various radio programs.
The marriage was not immediately miserable, but it was not very happy either. Lynn resented the fact that she'd sacrificed her dreams of a career, while Bob had not, resented the long hours he worked that left her home alone in a very small house with nosy neighbors and an increasingly rambunctious small child, and very much resented her husband's regular bouts of infidelity. While the two tried to keep their fighting out of the presence of Jeremy, by the age of five or six he was very much aware that his parents no longer loved or even liked one another. His father began to avoid coming home until late at night, and his mother sank into a deep depression and began to drink frequently throughout the day to cope.
Jeremy was often left to his own devices, sitting in front of a TV, playing video games in his room, or burning himself on microwave dinners. Occasionally his mother ordered him out of the cramped house and he would follow a pack of young teens who enjoyed smoking weed and occasionally throwing rocks at stray dogs or setting off firecrackers near feral cats to amuse themselves. When Jeremy was seven, his mother loaded him into the car for a very long drive. He woke up alone in a parking lot, late at night. Lynn had left him in the car with a note, and thrown herself off a nearby bridge, into the river. While his father and their extended family had been aware of her depression, she'd begun seeing a therapist, given up drinking, and they had assumed she was recovering.
The exact circumstances of her suicide were never really discussed with Jeremy, and beyond a few sessions with a child psychologist whom he loathed immediately, Bob never brought up Lynn's name with his son again. His wife's tragic death spurred Bob to leave radio producing behind and revitalize his father's faltering evangelical church, which was re-branded as Heartspring. Over the years the ministry gained traction and became something of a burgeoning megachurch with its own radio show and a regular rotation of preachers, as well as youth and Hispanic ministries. Jeremy was generally shuffled off with other kids into various youth groups, which he hated, since he saw his father even less.
Two years after his wife's suicide, Bob met one of the parishioners, Sarah Hill, a struggling single mother with a deep faith in his ministry. The two bonded over their shared Christian faith, experiences as single parents to young children, and quickly married. Jeremy gained a step-sister through this, Miranda, who was a year younger than him and even less happy about the marriage than he was.
