Quote:

You notice a black cat with what looks to be some kind of marking on its forehead, which in Destiny City is not an uncommon occurrence. It appears to be opening its mouth as though speaking, though no sounds come out. The cat entices you to follow it both by its silence and strange energy signature, and you don’t quite seem to be going anywhere in particular, but you feel compelled to see where this journey will end. As the small creature gets to a shadow filled area, it turns and gives a final audible meow before seeming to melt into the shadows. All searching yields no results the cat is simply not there…perhaps this wasn’t such a normal occurrence after all!

The task was simple on paper. There had been a sighting of a black Mauvian. The task was to either capture it if possible or kill it. It seemed a simple enough first patrol for Rakovanite and so they got a teleport out into the city to where the location was.

In a dark alleyways, he could feel that strange, draining chill. Fur bristled as he looked about, eyes glowing faintly as he scanned around. "Since the Mauvian is black, we are going to have to careful. I really don't want to be laser-beamed in the face tonight."

The only Mauvian Rakovanite had ever met was Arthur, and nothing in those encounters had lent itself to seeming like there was much to fear from the strange cat-like aliens. That wasn't to say they'd engaged in any variety of combat, but Rak was still under the impression that there was very little Mauvians could do when faced with danger, particularly when presented with more than one agent as opposition.

So he couldn't say he shared his captain's concerns. A laser beam to the face could be shaken off or healed in Negaspace. What would be more concerning was if the Mauvian had allies in wait, and Rakovanite still had no experience with any members of the forces of Order.

And nothing seemed out of the ordinary now, besides the oddly creeping shadows that had been behaving oddly, lately.

His dark ruby gaze slid to Wolframite, surely more attuned to these things than Rakovanite was, at this point. "Do you sense something?" And if so, wouldn't they simply be able to follow wherever the sensations led?

"Well, I am. But not the kind usual for anyone like us or Order. That's what is bizarre, and I've encountered other factions and entities before with different energies. This still isn't similar to them." His attention was focused to the right, ears turning as he tried to make sense of the sensation.

"This way. It's not a strong signature." He turned and headed towards the darker street, the shadows a cold, eerie feeling. Usually the dark was comforting to him and he wasn't superstitious enough to have the holiday season affect him. Still, he knew holidays somehow called strange events to the city.

Rakovanite had encountered very little and had almost no concept of what was 'usual' to come across. As far as he could recall, he'd never even felt the presence of any Order member, having only run into a small scattering of other agents in the handful of times he'd powered up on his own to try and 'feel' anything.

Feeling things in general was not a particularly strong suit of his.

He followed in Wolframite's steps, sensing nothing more than a normal night plagued by shadows and a crisp chill in the air. Maybe it was a little chilly for a mid-autumn night, but otherwise...? Rakovanite peered around inquisitively, still unsure of exactly what they were looking for or where or how they hoped to find it. "Mauvians have no energy signature while they are in their cat bodies, is that correct?" And he was certain they'd feel one in any other form, presumably.

"That's right. A Mauvian appears as a cat without a energy signature which makes them harder to find and track. Because of this, they can more easily navigate the city and awaken senshi. The only time they give off a signature is if they are humanoid or senshi." He said, moving quickly and then slowing down as if refocusing on a sensation and then moving again.

"Because of this, they are hard to find. If we had the ability, we would be corrupting or killing a lot more." And lessen the growth of the resistance.

It was then that he stopped and gestures at him to look ahead. Among a hedge was a black cat with a mark upon it's brow. Wolframite wouldn't make out the symbol from here.

"Take the left. I'll go right. It sees us so try talking. Make it think we just want to talk. I want you to get it's attention so I can teleport to it and grab it. Understood?"

*Hindi for 'I got it.' He will typically switch between languages when he switches to 'business' mode.

That's right. He'd known as much. Even before Nat had the ability to sense anything at all, Arthur had told him how dangerous it was for a cat to be in its humanoid form. Nataniel had thought little of it at the time, of course, as he'd had no means to judge exactly what it meant to feel something like an 'aura.' But now he was learning, and it still seemed so difficult to pick out what was different, what was strange among agents or senshi or... otherwise. As apparently this creature was.

At the mention of 'corrupting or killing,' Rakovanite canted his head to the side. He knew an Order Mauvian. They didn't seem dangerous, hardly worthy of sparing effort on, if Rakovanite thought about it. Though he supposed their role was somewhat significant to the other side... "What is the benefit of killing or corrupting over the other?" Why would you choose to kill a Mauvian when it could simply be forced to work on their side? Why did it always seem like there was so little talk of simply forcing senshi, knights, and Mauvians to submit to the will of chaos?

The answer would have to come later, he stopped at Wolframite's back, peering ahead at the unmistakable slinky frame of a black feline.

Oh, he understood, alright. "Main samajh gaya(*)," Rakovanite hissed softly as he moved from behind the captain and circled to the left. The cat looked relatively ordinary to him, and it tipped its head and peered back at Rakovanite much as he had moments prior. He extended a hand as he slowly approached. It had worked on Arthur, hadn't it?

"Aren't you a peculiar thing," Rak murmured, tone low. "We have no ill intention toward you." Regardless of the talk of killing and corrupting. "We only want to speak-"

It fled. Like a shadow roving under a moving light, it was there one second and gone the next. And Rakovanite, feeling more than capable of keeping pace with the forces of a mere housecat while powered, gave chase.

"Mauvians create senshi but are very rare. We have corrupted senshi who need them to advance in rank. It's best to corrupt, but if you can't, you need to kill them. A living Mauvian can create dozens if not hundreds of senshi. One dead is a army of future senshi gone." He whispered and then moved away to sink into the dark. The dark uniform and fur melting into the shadows as he went low and moved quietly.

The Mauvian in question had the oddest energy which in itself was strange. Mauvians in cat form usually had no signature but this one was eeking a sensation in the energy wavelengths he could pick up. Even here, he couldn't see if the symbol was golden or not, but then why would they be reported in a Chaos Mauvian. Was it somehow defective or maybe this was some Mauvian tech it had in place. Microchipping wasn't unheard of for the creatures.

Rak moved to speak to it, and from here he could pick them up clearly. Yet, as he spoke, the Mauvian opened it's mouth and said nothing despite its jaws moving. Was it mute?

It darted and the flash of movement signaled him. In a instant, he teleported before it and slashed out to grab it but it was gone the moment. His claws would have touched it. Ears back, he looked about quickly and saw it racing back at Rak between Rak and a water fountain.

"Kick it!" A good hit with a foot would tender it immobile and was easier then bowing low to grab it.

Mauvians were weak, as far as Rakovanite understood it. From what had been explained to him, he was fairly certain they lacked any ability that made them more physically impressive than the average house cat, besides the star beam Wolframite had mentioned a moment ago. Even a basic agent as Rakovanite was should be able to use his enhanced speed to outrun one, and capturing them should be no more difficult than throwing it in a bag...

One Mauvian, alone as this cat was, was hardly any threat worth killing it over. Perhaps in a larger squabble with more variables, death would be the safety way to prevent one from escaping, but... It still seemed having them forcibly corrupted would be more benefit than simply killing one.

This one, however, for all Rakovanite's certainty that he should be able to outmatch it in speed, did not leave much opportunity to catch it.

Watching Wolframite come within what must have been mere millimeters of it was not very inspiring, considering the captain should be even faster than Rakovanite and perfectly capable of teleportation.Rakovanite slid low, making another swipe as the creature darted in front of him, but he caught nothing but air, and he shot an annoyed look back at the other man.

'Kick it,' indeed.

Mauvians were never this quick. As much as they were aliens, they didn't have the powered advantage of strength and speed. He never once saw any capable of leaping as high up as a cat was capable and they were oftennterried for their lives in the presence of any chaos member due to the upper hand they held. Being blasted by their beam was usually the only thing in their arsenal and once that was avoided, they were helpless.

The more the two of them moved, the more suspicious be became. The report said it was unnatural and sent them to investigate if this was something strange or if the Mauvians developed some advancements for their kind on the side of order. From what he saw of the black Mauvian, there were no attachments to its body or any magical signature aside from the odd yet weak power signature. Usually Mauvians in this form had none. Unless it was implanted, then something was wrong here.

He managed to swipe into the creature and it simply vanished. Stopping, he looked out and saw the cat several feet away. It watched them and then, before their eyes, it vanished.

He rose up, staring at the spot it left. "Mauvians do not teleport." He said more to himself than the other officer. Something was up, and that something needed reported.

Breathing out, he stretched his arms and dusted off the dirt and gravel from the fur. "Well, that's that I suppose. You did well."

"Have you made a official report before?" He asked Rakovanite, looking over him to see how he was fairing.

There was still so much Rakovanite didn't understand, and facing something unfamiliar or 'odd' should hardly in itself be unusual. But he felt more well-acquainted with Mauvians than he did with any other force of Order, considering he'd at least had the opportunity to meet one, where any interaction with White Moon senshi and knights still eluded him. And this encounter, though it had turned into something of a scuffle, did not seem in any way similar to meeting an ordinary Mauvian.

It hadn't communicated with them, as he knew Mauvians could, besides the one meow as it vanished. It hadn't tried to defend itself, though, apparently, it had hardly needed to, in that it possessed unnerving speed and agility and... teleportation, apparently.

Rakovanite didn't consider himself well enough acquainted with the world to determine if it was as odd as it seemed, but...

As he rose back to a stand, he glanced to his captain to see that Wolframite seemed at least as puzzled as Rakovanite felt, which did, admittedly, seem to justify much of his confusion. "Perhaps... It was just a cat," he muttered. "It meowed as they do, and the other night I was pulled through the shadows to another location in Destiny City. So... maybe it was, as well." Rakovanite commented, thinking to a few nights prior when he'd stepped into a shadow and walked out behind some alleyway, into another captain, who had oddly experienced the same thing.

He'd been told to report that oddity, as well. So, "Yes, when I reported the..." His dark lashes flicked low, hunting for a way to describe the experience that wasn't absurd and coming up with practically nothing. "...Shadow-walking experience."

"That didn't feel like any normal cat." He said, thinking it over and growing more uneasy.

His attention did flick you at the news that he had teleported from one place to another. His rank could not do that and even if they managed, he would have been knocked out from the immense energy drain.

"You teleportrd from a shadow?" He said in awe, having never come across something like that. "I'll need to read that report when we get back. Something s clearly going on." And he didn't line it at all.

"For now, we did our part. I'll call for a ride back. You can head home for the night." They did enough for one day and it wouldn't make sense to go out and f something else. He'd rather write up a report and keep anyone else from wasting their time out here for some strange cat.

He had to agree, despite being the one to suggest that it might just be normal. Normal animals didn't have much aura, as far as Rakovanite could tell, and this one had had one, just... an unusual one. He sighed softly. Perhaps he should just accept the idea that not everything in his life would add up reasonably, anymore. The world was too strange, and magic and chaos too unpredictable.

At least this shadow cat hadn't seemed to be doing much. For all its oddities, it hadn't seemed like much of a threat. But he supposed there was no harm in taking care to protect themselves if it could be linked to something nefarious. Rakovanite pinched the bridge of his nose and huffed softly.

"I am... not sure what I would call it," he tried to explain to Wolframite. "It felt like- like nothing, really. Like walking. One step brought me somewhere new. Myself and a captain I had never met before. We both wound up in the same place at the same time, by the same means." The other agent who'd been there had seemed just as confused as Wolframite seemed now. But Rakovanite had just attributed it to the forces of 'magic,' as he was with the cat.

Everything was strange. There was almost no point in trying to reason it out, which threw Rakovanite particularly out of his element.

Going home sounded like the best he could do, in this situation. "I understand," he murmured quietly. It was something to say he had been a part of, something to broaden his experience and knowledge of the world, but... it was a bit of a shame that Rakovanite couldn't begin to explain it. He tipped his head to the captain with him. "Please let me know if you are able to find out more."

The rest had seemed like a dismissal, and Rakovanite decided to take the hint and head home. At least he didn't have to worry about class the next day.
