Prompt #4
Destiny City News reports several sightings of 'rabid dogs' appearing throughout the city. Those interviewed claim that the dogs would surround them and chase them down the streets, seemingly popping in and out of sight until the person finally found themselves in a well lit area. You have the misfortune of running into these same dogs.

They cling to the shadows as you go about your way at night. Seemingly at the corner of your vision, one flickers by, and you turn and see nothing. Again and again it happens. They are trying to drive you into the darkest corners of the city, herding you away from the light. In the nearby distance are the lights of the city: streetlights, signs, traffic. You have to do something to get there, to escape these creatures. When you make it to any significant light source, you hear a low growl, a wailing hiss; the dogs have vanished.

For now.

Several inappropriate phrases were running through her head as she sprinted through the darker streets. They'd been after her for a while, biting and snapping at her heels as she bounced and threw herself over various obstacles only to discover these dogs had somehow gone through them. More importantly, they were unlike any youma she had faced before; she had tried to hit them with sticks and she'd thrown several bricks but...Well... They'd all passed through their shadowed forms.

Today was not her day and if this was anything to go by then she still needed a considerable amount of training. If these were Youma then someone owed her an explanation as to how senshi like her were ever supposed to be able to stop them... did the Mauvians have something useful to hand?

Such questions had very low priorities for her as she darted round the next corner.

Every snap and growl had been very determined to herd her a specific direction and it had taken a measure of courage for her to disagree with them. It was with considerable effort that she had forced herself to move in a different direction, risking an actual bite from the ethereal things in order to get herself back towards something more recognisable... Something with light.

It wasn't a perfect plan, but she did appear to be making her way towards one of the better funded waterways, not exactly populated but at least a region that was reasonably well lit in the event of any accidents...

Toby had lost track of the time, and so found himself out and about later than was perhaps comfortable. And to make matters worse, there were people around, so he couldn't exactly step aside and power up.

He was alone when he heard something in the shadows, and looked off to the side, frowning ever so slightly...but kept going. Then he saw something, but it was gone. He moved a bit faster.

This cat and mouse (dog and cat?) game continued for a time, before he found himself near some water, and some light. Around that point, he remembered he had a very easy solution to this problem...and powered in the shadows before calling out, "Alright, you...whatever you are, I will end you.."

It happened that there was also another senshi aura nearby, it seemed...so that was good, too. She might have even heard him.

She entered the area in much the same fashion as she always did, with great gusto and not the slightest bit of finesse. She could be heard before she was seen, the clatter of boots and then the sudden skid as she lurched around the corner and plunged into the light.

She was breathing heavily by then, wheezing for want of a better word and she needed to take a moment to herself. She placed her palm against one of the lamp posts and leaned against it, sucking in a number of breaths before she heard the tail end of a familiar voice.

Wait.

She straightened, and though still somewhat breathless she began to make her way towards it with a measure of dignity. Intent on avoiding the shadows for now, she stuck to the lit areas which would otherwise have been ill advised. It was better to be sighted by something she could fight rather than whatever those things were.

It wasn't long before she did spot the familiar face and a haphazard smile popped up onto her lips.

"You too huh?" she asked. She wasn't sure if he'd been chased by the same thing as here but there was a lot of weird stuff going on right now.

The...shadow-monsters, or whatever they were, seemed to be keeping their distance...for the moment. He blinked as Adorea approached him, and with a glance around, nodded. "Yeah, guess so," he agreed.

"I don't know why, but things always seem to get weird around this time of year." He shrugged. "And it's, uh, not always the Negaverse, either. Sometimes I wonder if Buffy the Vampire Slayer is sort of real, except that the Hellmouth is here."

"Gonna be honest with you, my family tends to disappear during vacation periods to spend time with the relatives," She admitted as she drew closer, glancing back towards the beings that seemed to be mingling within the depths of the shadows. She didn't know what they were but she wished they would at least give her some sort of clue beyond 'dog' and 'angry'.

"...Up until this year I pretty much spent my whole time in France," she added with a shake of her head. She finally turned her attention back to Nix though, her eyes squinting at what he'd said.

"What do you mean it isn't always them?" she queried.

Ah, but if only circumstances hadn't changed recently and the normal routine of vacations during the holiday period hadn't been carefully set to one side for the time being. Being at the 'Hellmouth' as Nix put it, wasn't the most desirable of things for this particular senshi.

“France sounds pretty nice, honestly,” Nix replied with a smirk. “I don’t know what causes it, but I’ve definitely seen weird things in the past that seemed to catch negaversers just as much off-guard as us. It might still be them, I dunno, just not a, you know planned thing.”

He shrugged.

“In spite of the names, the Chaos people are a lot more organized than the Order ones, so that’s surprising. Giant spiders and weird shadow monsters just don’t seem to be up any of our alleys, either. So it just sorta...pops up.”

He gestured around. “Hence hellmouth.”

It should have come at no surprise that she looked skeptical; she was fairly certain that whether it was planned or not the agents of chaos were likely to be responsible. Whether it was a failed experiment or their spaghetti monster of doom that they all seemed to worship this just seemed like something they were otherwise inclined towards.

...It seemed like something they'd dabble in.

It was perfectly reasonable to run from something you had played with, messed up, and then fully expected someone else to clean up the mess too. Given the penchant for their spaghetti monster to be a touch more ruthless than some seemed inclined to admit, messing with its own pawns seemed perfectly logical to her as well.

"Just because it's not planned doesn't really mean it's not them," she pointed out and shook her head. "They're just crap at cleaning up after their own mess," she added with pursed lips.

"Given it only seems to happen here though I'd hazard a guess this is where they keep something important," she snorted. She might have been introduced to magic but the supernatural hadn't yet proven itself real, this kind of thing had every chance of being them and they were simply playing the Order for fools.

"Could always try finding it, maybe set the damn dog things on them instead," she muttered, failing to acknowledge that said individuals were also getting hounded so it was all a bit of a pointless activity. Smashing whatever was causing it was probably more advisable!

"France is nice though, great food." She smiled. "Never had rabid dogs either."

"You know, that's a good point," Nix said with a nod. "It probably is them. Or, at least," he waved a hand around, "the weird chaos stuff behind them."

"I've heard before that weird stuff happens here partially because we are only here. Something about the Negaverse kind of having influence over the whole world." He rubbed his cheek at that. "And I guess it's possible, but I feel like the world should be a lot, uhm, you know worse if they really did control everything. I know, at least, any mentions of us in the news tend to be spun poorly, so I guess it's not entirely off-base."

"Or maybe that's just what they want us to think," Adorea cast her gaze back towards the shadows and pursed her lips. None of this stuff had ever happened to her while she was away on vacation, she'd always been completely safe and thoroughly enjoyed herself. Halloween, Christmas and other seasonal festivities had been exactly that, completely harmless and full of joy as opposed to desperation and anxiety.

If that was the case and those parts of the world were fine then maybe...

"Maybe out there it's us who have pushed them back and taken a measure of control," she pointed out. She'd like to think it was the case, that they may hold this region but elsewhere the White Moon actually had some structure, some leadership, and it had the capacity to fight back and put down the Negaverse so that they couldn't hurt others like this.

...It was something she wanted to aspire to here.

"Maybe the success out there has made them determined that we don't manage to get a foothold here; if we're the 'bad guys' here then it's harder for us to win out, you know?" she pursed her lips thoughtfully.

"But that doesn't mean we can't find a way to expose them, we just need to figure out how and the angry shadow dogs might be a way to do that if we can work out how."

Although for that to work they'd have to make everyone believe in magic too and that was even more of a struggle than she was inclined to accept at this particularly moment in time!

"I dunno, really," Nix replied. "It's hard to say. What ever the case, we should definitely focus on here first. Get things organized a bit, maybe." He looked around.

"Getting rid of the shadow dogs would be a good step...Though, since we've been standing in the light, I haven't noticed them much in a few minutes, you?"

He whistled at the darkness, squinting, but heard nothing.

"No but it doesn't mean they won't come back," she grimaced. She'd been chased by those damn things more than once recently and she was not a fan. They seemed to have the capacity to get anywhere she went and snapped at her heels the entire way. She hadn't always hated dogs but in recent weeks she was beginning to question their motivations.

...Or at least anything black or too big.

She was inadvertently becoming prejudice against larger dogs and those with darker fur as a result of the current trend of those things trying to eat her. It was hardly the fault of the innocent pups who got caught in the crossfire of these unfortunate assumptions but right now she was feeling more inclined towards the feline kind than the canine.

"I'd be up for testing stuff out if you've any ideas though," she added and straightened, clapping her hands as she moved carefully towards the shadows and peered at them.

"Can we summon little headlamps or anything with these things?" she held out her phone and gave it a wave.

"True," Nix allowed, still peering into the darkness. "I wonder what would happen if I let them catch me. Powered up, of course..."

"Oh, I think there's a flashlight function on the phones," he said, peering at it, "but if you want new stuff out of thin air, you gotta get a mauvian to do it." He considered for a few moments. "I don't have a regular flashlight with me, though it would make sense to bring one, wouldn't it?"

He stepped out of the light, and listened, looking around, hoping to spot something, anything...and not finding anything else supernatural.

"I'm all for a little bit of science but that sounds..." Adorea didn't have time to dispute it further as Nix stepped into the shadows and waited patiently. She didn't have a standard flashlight on her either, but she did afford herself a moment to fish her phone out and prod at it like the Luddite she was until she finally found the appropriate button on the device.

With a burst of light the phone lit up and allowed, well, a stream of directed light to point towards the shadows. It was about as weighty and awkward as any other phone torch and eventually she had to shift it into a horizontal position so that she had a better grip on it.

"Anything?" she hazarded as she stepped forward, slowly drawing the light from the distance and back towards the other senshi.

She wasn't entirely sold on the idea of getting caught but perhaps he had a point, they couldn't work out where they were coming from and what they technically were meant to do unless they let it happen.

"Although what's the plan if you do get caught?" she added as she stepped towards him and swung her phone round to take a look at other areas hidden in shadow, enough time for the almost living shadow to creep in if it felt otherwise inclined.

"I ran into a cat a bundle of times too and it always led to trouble," she admitted. "And rocks don't work, I checked."

She paused.

"Magic might though," she conceded.

"No, nothing," Nix replied, shaking his head. He sounded ever so slightly disappointed.

"You know," he admitted a moment later, "I don't really know. I figured I'd just, you know, punch it, or lick it. If it can touch me, I can touch it, right?"

It seemed like sound logic, anyway.

"Maybe the rock just didn't fly fast enough?" He scratched his face as he squinted into the darkness. "Maybe it's afraid of me?" he said, suddenly amused at the idea. "Or it went away after we were standing in the light for a bit...guess that's possible too."

It was nice to see another person had much the same methodology when it came to problem solving. When in doubt, punching something or hurling something at it was usually a good starting place. However, after that point she generally needed to come up with a second part and, well, she tended to end up winging that bit.

However even though he didn't mean it literally, the 'lick it', did make her crack a rather large smile.

"Didn't your parents ever tell you not to put things into your mouth if you didn't know where they'd been?" she asked. "Or did, and it may not be strictly appropriate to eat it?" she teased. That being said, if they could attract one again then she would like to see if his licky-tongue thing could actually do more than her bricks could.

"I mean, we can always try it again?" she hazarded and shut off her phone light. "I'll just throw another rock and you can uh, try licking it," she still couldn't stop herself sounding more amused by this than she really should have.

"Last time I thought they were gone it only took them a couple of minutes to come back, they just seem to get temporarily fixated on something else," she finished and this was perhaps the only useful information she had on the subject beyond 'rock no work'.
