She was an oddity and that was putting it lightly. Liliane had had more than enough of the creepy sensations on her first evening on patrol with those shadows and now she was absolutely sure something weird was going on. Well, not really, for the most part society seemed absolutely fine with said shadows and it was only really her who seemed to be moderately put out by them. Now, there was every possibility that on this occasion she might actually just be terrible at hiding that in comparison to fellow citizens but she never did do things in a half-assed manner.

With that in mind Liliane had come home the previous evening and immediately raided her cupboards. Not the normal cupboards, oh no, this was the special cupboard where gadgets and random plush toys went to die when their usefulness had ended. Either they were forgotten about, or simply pushed to the side with assurances they would be donated or 'used again'...and then they gathered dust. The only individual item that got a reprieve in this cupboard was the Christmas tree and even then some of the decorations had been lost in the abyss.

Fortunately for one of these forgotten gadget it really did get to prove its usefulness again!

Well maybe.

As it stood, the girl was currently stood on a street corner with her EMF Reader and what appeared to be a dictaphone. Yep, at some point in her young life Liliane Benson's parents had humoured her enough to take her on a ghost hunting tour and now she was at it again. Not that she had found anything worth noting at the moment, but maybe in a while she might find something, right? There had to be some sort of explanation for why her skin kept crawling and she'd spent the entire night's worth of a patrol freaked out.

Alas she did make for a strange figure as she pointed both towards the shadows that at this particular moment in time, she'd chosen not to walk in to. This evening she was playing it safe, as dusk drew in she was bundled up in her normal sweater and coat and she'd made sure to keep herself close to one of the street lights.

Tonight, Miss Benson was on a mission; a paranormal mission, but still a mission.

Soleiyu had been a nit reluctant to travel in the darkness much recently, if only because things were different than he was used to. The air seemed a bit colder, the shadows a it longer. Everything seemed a bit more unfriendly.

It was worth investigating, but he knew the saying: Curiosity killed the cat.

So, he had proceeded with caution. He didn’t stray into unfamiliar parts of the city, didn’t wander where he couldn’t easily see, or that felt even remotely unsafe.

Of course, even where he’d settled, there was plenty to observe.

He had lingered near a white sign; he was fairly large for a cat and in the darkness, his fluffy white fur stuck out far too much to be discrete and he was trying to avoid the clinginess of the shadows.

While he had intended mostly to simply observe, it didn’t take very long before he grew impatient—and then she appeared. A woman, holding some strange and interesting trinket. It wasn’t a phone but, then, he couldn’t quote make out what it was.

So, shamelessly and without much caution, he waited until she was close to him and demanded, What is that?”

Upon speaking, his tail swished languidly besides him; he sat perfectly still aside from that, though his eyes following her intently.

It took a double take but the red-head did eventually drop her gaze to her feet. There she found a cat, one with a particularly recognisable mark on his forehead and yet... Her eyes narrowed and she unceremoniously pointed her EMF Reader towards him, raising a brow as it seemed to stutter in much the same fashion as it had been mere seconds ago.

"I guess you're real," she mused.

No doubt that a talking cat would have caused alarm around normal civilians but the senshi had gotten used to the concept fairly quickly. Her suspicion in regards to his legitimacy stemmed, for the most part, from the fact that she had encountered a black cat several times that seemed to be otherwise inclined to vanish after leading her astray. Suffice to say that recent paranormal activity had caused even her to be more than a little paranoid.

She hunkered down, balancing carefully on the balls of her feet. The strange, ethereal cat hadn't really spoken at all despite its best attempts, the very fact that Soleiyu had achieved the 'impossible' in comparison made it abundantly clear that she wasn't hallucinating. Ah, but to the question at hand!

"Are you talking about this?" she held the device out to him for inspection and pursed her lips. On the front there were several buttons, but the bulk of the gadget was taken up with a large screen that provided a numeric display. "It's an EMF Reader," she held up her little Dictaphone too. "And this is for recording voices," she added.

"I'm ghost hunting," she admitted.

Soleiyu watched her, tail still swishing languidly next to him as he observed. He listened intently, keen to decipher everything he could. His eyes followed the device she was using and, when she presented it, he leaned forward to press his nose against it.

Sniffing alone wasn't good enough, he needed to touch it.

"Oh," he answered, still sniffing at the device. When he'd had his fill, he glanced at the other items she had, and he could feel the itch to take them apart, to see how they worked.

He suppressed it, albeit barely.

"...Have you found any?"

Initials inspections now complete, he asked that question she'd hoped she'd have a much more satisfying answer for. Alas, as it stood the red-head hadn't been in the vicinity for very long and given she wasn't feeling all that brave when it came to the shadows at the moment she probably wasn't making the most out of the opportunity to 'investigate' so to speak.

She opened her mouth as if to lie and then shook her head.

"No," she admitted and wrinkled her nose. "At least not so far, they're either shy or they're just trying to get me to go further into that," she motioned towards the shadows and shook her head. He'd know what she was wouldn't he? Arthur had found her some way so she must give off some sort of signal to them... She never had thought to ask.

"Which I'm not really feeling right now because weird stuff is happening in there and I'm pretty sure something is trying to get hold of me," she furrowed her brow. "And then there's the dogs; either way it's all pretty weird so I figured I'd try and find out what malevolent ghosts are in there."

...The fact she hadn't worked out what to do if she did find something hadn't crossed her mind.

Soleiyu's eyes tracked her movement back to the shadows. He looked into the darkness for a moment and then returned his gaze to her.

"You think they're ghosts?" he prompted; it was as likely an answer as any, though he didn't trust what he couldn't prove. All science started with a hypothesis, so at least she had something to go off of. "I was still thinking erratic energy manifesting in malevolent bursts. So perhaps we're not on such very different pages. Of course, I haven't anything to prove it. The most I've been able to get out of any research is that if you shine a light into the shadows, they go away. Sort of. Not as much as usual."

Even with the brightest flashlight, he was still finding that the shadows weren't completely chased away.

"Your little thing there." He nodded again towards the instrument. "Where do you get something like that, did you make it? How does it work?"

"I got it when I was a kid," Liliane shook her head, she wasn't about to take credit for something she had absolutely no concept of. Mechanical and electrical engineering was far from her realms of understanding; her expertise lay in math and geography. Nevertheless she did at least remember how the paranormal ghost hunter folks had claimed it would work.

"Apparently it's supposed to detect electromagnetic fields, but they said you're only supposed to use like...one setting on it because phones mess the other ones up," she wrinkled her nose and held out the device towards the shadows again. The green light remained as it was, refusing to shift into an amber or red warning to indicate that something anomalous was nearby.

"If it changes that's supposed to mean there's something there," she added and turned her attention back to the Mauvian. "I haven't been able to touch these things, let alone hurt them, but they seem to be able to do weird stuff to me so..."

"It was worth a shot?" she hadn't found anything personally, but it would be nice to find something that might help her.

"You wanna try?" She held it out.

Solieyu's eyes flashed eagerly and it took all of his self control not to just take the device and start tearing it apart. He accepted the thing eagerly, holding it in both paws and setting it down on the ground before him. His eyes were combing over every surface, trying to take in every little detail. He wanted to open it, wanted to see how it worked, wanted to make his own.

Wanted to make a better one.

At least he had a name. He could look it up tonight, research it.

"You humans have such interesting understanding of the universe. I like it," he said, but then matter-of-factly added, "Even if it's wrong."

Truthfully, he didn't know about ghosts, or oddities on some other plane. He touched the device, examining it with visible excitement.

"It's very creative. I hope you find something with it. Will you tell me if you do? I want to learn." It was an intangible science, something unknown and exciting. He wanted to see it in action. "...Why are you interested in such things?" he added after a second, glancing up. "It's a unique hobby to have picked up, I think."

"I got it for Halloween when I was little," Liliane replied with a wry smile. "My parents took us on a ghost hunting thing when we were visiting family and we got to keep this?" she explained. Granted, they'd had to keep it because she had inadvertently caused damage by bashing it against a railing when it hadn't given her the reading she wanted. In the grand scheme of things the device was scratched but in working order, that didn't mean they got away with it though.

...Young her had been even more impatient for answers than she was now!

"It's something different and this time of year is supposed to be great for it, apparently they're supposed to be more active," she added and glanced briefly towards the shadows. While she was looking away from it, the device switched from green to red, flaring up briefly before it dissipated again, though what it may have detected was very much open for debate.

"How do you know it's wrong?" she asked at last and returned her gaze to the Mauvian. "Do you know what this is?" she waved towards the peculiar shadows that had started to overtake the city. "Because the whole reason I'm doing this is to try and work out what it is and why it's happening."

...To her the excuse of 'weird stuff happens here' didn't fly, someone had to be up to something.

Soleiyu's eyes fixed onto the changing light, tail twitching with more eagerness even when the rest of his demeanor seemed to be almost lazily humoring her. He may have been able to control his voice, his face, but his tail?

It danced around like a worm on a hook.

"You have an inquisitive mind. I like that in a human." His words were earnest and seemed to deliver genuine praise. "Truthfully, I was out for the same reason. Though I don't know that I was thinking 'supernatural'. All of these oddities seem 'natural' in Destiny City. I haven't even heard any rumors. It's not really safe to be out at night but. You can't really stop an inquisitive mind. I never thought about using tools like that."

His eyes were on the machine, glued to the lights.

"You must be brave to be out here, knowing something is wrong. What would you do if you found out it was something dangerous?"

"If they're not supernatural then that means, for the most part, they should be tangible," Lily flicked her gaze back towards the shadows and took a deep breath. "Which means that if you can find some tangible evidence you can find the source and put a stop to it if you need to," she continued and returned her gaze to the Mauvian.

"I have to start somewhere and it's not like I have any of those weird tools that you talking cats do," she hadn't quite outed herself but she might have been one of those civilians who had been exposed to the capabilities of the Mauvians before. The fact she hadn't panicked when he'd spoken would probably have made that obvious but given she now knew there were cats on the 'other side' it was...safer this way.

However his question did make her pause and her lips drew into a thin line, if only briefly.

"I'd try to find a way to stop it," she said finally and shrugged her shoulders. "I might have to research the methods of how, but I'd figure it out... If it stops getting people hurt then it's really the only solution," she pointed out.

Granted, that would mean the Negaverse would get away safely too but she would prefer to take the moral high ground on this one, honour was a thing and she valued it.

"So you don't know what it is either..." She wrinkled her nose. "How would you go about investigating this if you aren't into using something like this?" she added.

Soleiyu's tail twitched again, clearly pleased with this answer. He was watching her intently, with eyes that seemed like they could see through her. And yet, even his knowledge had his limits. He had already drawn conclusions about her, piecing together things she had said, her reactions. "You've met other Mauvians?" he prompted, curiosity unyielding.

He hadn't found many around the area, and while that gave him a certain sense of privilege and importance, it was still lonely. He liked humans, but he'd have liked to be around his own kind as well. At least, he'd have liked someone to pick their brain, to collaborate, to create with.

He wanted to wait for her answer but he didn't want to be rude so replied to hers, "If I don't understand something that's going on, something like this? I can't help but assume it's something more magical than scientific. And science, for all its beauty and worth, doesn't always explain magic. Especially not in this City. There are many ways to investigate, I suppose. I've set up a few cameras around here. I want to see where they're coming from, how often they appear. What they do. So don't do anything inappropriate while you're around these blocks, my cameras are going to run for the next five days. Although, we could work together if you like. I can tell you if I find anything interesting."

"A few," she smiled and motioned to him. "One was a little different though, he had a darker symbol on his forehead," she pointed out. She still wouldn't admit who she was, but by now Soleiyu probably would have pieced some of the puzzle together. Whether she was White Moon or Chaos was irrelevant to the conversation as it stood though, based on everything she had heard whatever this was didn't care which side you picked.

"I've met more of you with the lighter symbol though," she added, recalling both Arthur and Broiche in the process. Both had been friendly though their personalities had been quite different in some ways. Brioche had seemed more like a loveable father-figure while Arthur had seemed more astute and to the point.

...As for Soleiyu?

Curious, but not as dangerously curious as Chip might have been with his own machinations!

However as Soleiyu went into further detail about what he surmised they might have encountered she couldn't help but shake her head. In some manner of speaking could magic not be considered some form of science? Sure she wasn't entirely versed in any of that, but from all the fantasy books and now personal experience, there seemed to be some method to it no matter where it came from. Her lips pursed in thought as she considered this, though at first she wasn't sure if it would be rude to remark on it.

She opted to be more direct.

"Sure magic is just another form of scientific query though?" she hazarded and squinted towards the shadows. "Have you seen anything in the shadows or have you not had a chance to check yet?" she added curiously.

The thought of having someone else to work with to study the phenomenon was tempting, particularly a Mauvian who was most likely more well versed in the oddities of the world. Hey, even if she didn't manage to give him anything useful then maybe she could learn a thing or three in the mean time!

"And you know...having a team mate sounds like it would be neat, maybe you can show me how it should be done, yeah?"

Soleiyu clicked his tongue at the mention of a darker symbol. He knew what those typically meant. Honestly, it might not have even been the Mauvian's fault, if they were tainted with Chaos. But, still.

More with a lighter symbol was ideal, those were the ones he wanted to meet. Those were the ones he could spend time with. Could talk to, could work with.

"That depends on how you define 'magic'." He seemed a little amused by the concept. "If you've never seen true magic, perhaps you might simply think it was something with scientific explanation. I think both can exist. But it doesn't mean I don't want to understand everything." He answered the next question easily, "I haven't seen anything in the shadows. And any time I've gotten close, they've attacked me. I wish it were an illusion, but they hurt. So it's not really easy to get close enough to gather information."

His tail swished eagerly at the concept of teaming up; there was a lot that he could do on his own, but she had abilities he didn't have--strengths he lacked. A fresh set of eyes and an untapped imagination.

Also, thumbs.

"And what would you consider true magic?" she asked.

She'd experienced some weird things now that her family weren't reliably leaving the city on each festive occasion. On many of those occasions she would have described them as 'magical', but there was also a part of her that did have to wonder if they could be rooted in science as well. Sure, she didn't quite know how yet, but in the grand scheme of things surely everything could be explained to a degree...right?

"I'd always assumed that no matter how spectacular something was, it could all be worked out eventually," she smiled wryly. "Kinda like dark matter, we used to joke that was a thing and it seems like it actually is...even if we still don't really know what it does," she pursed her lips. "So I figured magic was like that, we could find small elements of its nature and even if we couldn't work all of it out we could maybe find out some of it!"

Not a perfect explanation and certainly rambling, but it made sense to her.

"And those things have attacked me too, but if they can hurt something then that must mean they can be touched in return somehow."

...Suffice to say she'd like to scruff a dog or two and teach them some manners but she hadn't risked it in recent weeks given those she'd spoken to had made it very clear their powers hadn't worked.
