It was annoying how slowly a week could pass when you were excited for something. But, finally the night had arrived, and Whisler once more came to the spot where he was to meet Meri, a bag full of food held loosely in his hand. He had prepared some French toast and hoped that his new friend would like it.

It wasn’t as though stuffed French toast was the only thing he could make…but it was the best…and he…did enjoy making it more than anything else. And he had some drinks as well, chocolate milk and some apple cider…for while he didn’t think that Meri was underage…he wasn’t quite sure. And anyway, he didn’t want to bring alcohol lest she get the wrong idea of his intentions.

He didn’t have bad ones, and as he thought about sliding into the warm water, he looked around, hoping that Meri would show up sooner rather than later.

Whisler hoped that she brought some food too, while he did have some things stored up on his wonder, something warm and fresh would be good. Maybe she’d bring some chicken. Fried chicken and French toast was almost as good as chicken and waffles…right?

He grinned at the very thought and sat down heavily on the bench to wait.

While time itself was a constant thing, the perception of it, however, was not. Sometimes it seemed to move at a breakneck speed where you’re scrambling to try to get things done because of impending due dates. But then there were those weeks where it seemed to take absolutely forever while you wait anxiously for something that was coming up. The last seven days had definitely been the latter of the two for Meridiana.

This was a leap of faith she was taking, knowing that if he so choose she could become his prisoner in a place that nobody could save her. But, despite the fear Meridiana was also excited to visit a place nobody else could go without a direct invitation from Whisler himself. “I wish I had a place of my own.” The Rift was not a safe place for any corrupt and the Dark Kingdom… well, that was more so for higher-ranked officers than anything it seemed. Someday maybe that might change.

As Meridiana got closer to their meeting spot she found herself kind of hyper-aware of her surroundings. The meerest owl screech made her tense as did the lid falling off a garbage can when a trash panda jumped out with an apple core in its mouth. She was powered for goodness sake, small trivial things like this shouldn’t scare her; but they did…

Soon enough a familiar aura feathered the edge of her sense; a knight, not as strong as her General King’s but definitely more than just an Eternal Senshi. “Whisler?” she called out almost hesitantly, wanting to be sure it was him before she got any closer. Who knew how many transcended senshi or knights there were? He may have been the first one she had ever seen but that didn’t mean he was the only one and, if it could be helped, Meridiana would really rather not end up left for dead on the sidewalk again because she knew that if s**t hit the fan she wouldn’t bring Zinkenite into it for his own safety rather than her own.

Whisler beamed and jumped up, moving to cross the distance between the two of them the moment he heard Meri’s voice. He had felt the aura moving closer moment by moment, and even if it hadn’t been Meri he was planning on saying hello but.

“You’re here!” There was undeniable joy in his voice and as he moved closer, he hesitated and caught himself before he threw his arms around her and picked her up…she seemed wary. Concerned and a little frightened, and so Whisler stopped himself a few feet away, choosing instead to give a bow, smiling brightly.

“I feel like this week took forever…I’ve been looking so forward to this! I missed you.”

His words were sincere and he moved a little closer, holding out his arms, inviting her in for a hug if she chose. “I brought some stuffed French toast for us, if you didn’t bring anything, that’s okay. I can cook us some frozen pizzas or something when we get up to Whisler. There are plenty of fires.”

Watching her, Whisler smiled warmly still. “You…look as lovely as ever, Meri.”

“You as well,” Meridiana smiled as she closed the distance between them and accepted his offer of a hug. Just like before she knew that she should feel terrified and run away and yet here she was, embracing someone who she had been warned was an enemy.

After a moment she stepped away and reached into her pocket of subspace to pull from it two bags. “I brought turkey sandwiches and a small watermelon. I didn’t bring a knife though to cut it with.” Granted she could have just diced up the melon and put it in a Tupperware but part of the fun of mini watermelons was cutting it in half and eating it out of the rine like a bowl. “If need be I can go get one or we can save it for when we return.”

Hopefully, they would return because despite her better judgement she neglected to leave a note at home with information on who or where she was going this evening.

“I’m really excited to see your wonder. I’ve never been invited to a world or wonder outside of the Rift before.” Meridiana looked up at the sky and from there she could see the north star; bright and brilliant as ever.

The hug felt wonderful, and Whisler felt just a little sad when the corrupt stepped away. Though when she pulled out the food, he grinned, excited. “Nice! I have some knives up there for cooking, I’m trying to make it a good hideout in case anything goes down here and I have to get away for a while, you know? And It’s a great place to camp at. I love it.”

He crossed the distance between the two again and drew Meri into his arms, holding her gently. “Are you ready, princess? I’m so excited that you’re excited…I want to share it all with you.”

Pressing a kiss to the top of her head, Whisler whispered the words that would allow them to go up to Whisler itself. ” I pledge my life and loyalty to Polaris, and to Whisler. I humbly request your aid, so that in return I may give you mine.” Her hair felt so soft and he found himself smiling as he tightened his hold on the corrupt, unwilling to risk her being left behind.

His eyes were closed and he felt relaxed as the familiar feeling of being pulled to his wonder overtook the two of them, and when he opened his eyes again, he let her go, spreading his arms. “Welcome to my ah…Man cave?”
There was no better way to really describe this chamber, and as it was still the only one that Whisler had really explored or done any work to, well.

It was large, with the bubbling hot spring over in the far corner, the heat from both the spring and the large fire places on either side of the room making the temperature quite comfortable. There was a bed that he had made up, though really it was nothing more than a large mattress on the floor in the opposite corner of the spring. It looked comfortable though, filled with pillows and blankets.

Two chairs were set up by the fire, and they were quite comfortable, built by Whisler himself. You could find anything at Ikea, after all.

“I’m still working to decorate things, but I have a kitchen area over there, and obviously my bed over there…” He hesitated. “There’s a ton of rooms here, but everything’s blocked by a lot of rubble and things so…this is the area I’ve really been able to spruce up, but I’m trying. I just…get lazy. It’s so nice here so…why go further, you know?”

Biting his lip, he looked at the corrupt, hopeful. “…Do you like it?”

Coming from a family that had their own Interior Designer that oversaw the staging and remodel for each of their houses one would assume her expectations would have been rather high. If she were her mother, or aunt, then perhaps that might hold true but unlike them she didn’t employ any cleaning services to take care of her house. The yard, however, was a different matter but that was the HOA’s responsibility.

“I think it’s coming along,” Meridiana wandered over to the two chairs by the fireplace and ran her hand over the fabric to confirm that they were indeed as soft as they looked. “Definitely has the man cave, or bachelor, kind of vibe.” She playfully teased then walked into the kitchen area to drop her bags off on the counter top.

“If there is anything you need help with, now is the time to ask.” She may not be the strongest senshi out there but at least while she was powered Meri could at least help move things around a bit or offer some suggestions.

The bubbling sounds coming from the hot springs was like a beckoning call urging her to come over and at least dip her feet into the warm waters. But she resisted, for now, despite really wanting to relax in the sunken seats and allow her worries to just melt away.

Whisler watched her with a small, fond smile on his face and nodded, grinning. “I’ll keep that in mind, but right now I’m not really interested in any expansions…I don’t want…anything to change really. It’s so nice here now. It’s calm and peaceful…and mine. It’s safe and…”

He shrugged. “I like safe.”

Sinking down onto the bed he moved to lean against the wall, his eyes half closed as he watched her, a half smile still on his face. “Make yourself at home. Do you want me to go and get one of my pizzas so we can start cooking it while we relax?”

Frozen pizza was always a go to item for him while he was here, and it tasted so much better being cooked with a real fire oven…it gave the dish a much fancier vibe.

“I have hotdogs out there too, and…” He seemed thoughtful, rubbing his face. “…I have some other things. Ice cream, and hot pockets too, if you’re in the mood.” The ice cream would go well on his French toast and he was looking forward to that.

“Personally, I’d like the pizza but, it’s up to you, Meri. You’re my guest.”

Meridiana brought a hand up to cover her amused smile. His list of options just really pushed the Man Cave vibe to a whole new level. Something quick, easy and seemingly instant with low effort. Not exactly the options but that just meant that if he invited her here again she would have to bring something nicer to eat; perhaps a pasta dish with garlic bread. But for now, what he had to offer would do just fine.

“Pizza sounds fine, we can split a sandwich while we wait for it to cook.” Opening up one of the bags she pulled out one of the two BLT sandwiches and unwrapped it on the counter. She then began rummaging around a few drawers until she found a knife to cut it in half with. “Do you want either mustard or mayonnaise?” There were packets of both in the bag just in case it was one of those people that didn’t care much for either. Some only liked one or the other but there were also the rare few that liked, as her father put it, choke sandwiches; no condiments at all.”

He grinned and nodded, getting up with ease and snagging one of the blankets from the small bin at the foot of the bed, wrapping it around his shoulders. “All right. Be back in a second, Meri. And, just surprise me. I like both mustard and mayo, but I’m not too picky. Whatever you like best.”

The knight watched her for a long moment and then bundled his blanket tighter and went out, making sure the inner door was closed firmly before opening the door to the outside, shivering as a brisk wind cut right through his blanket and clothes. He grabbed the frozen pizza and came inside, shivering and moving close to the cooking fire in the kitchen area, his, grinning sheepishly.

“I hope you brought the pants or tights or something that I told you to. It’s a beautiful night out there, but it is cold as hell. I tell you though, it makes it easy to keep my food. I live in a freezer. It’s great.”

He was quick to unwrap the plastic, and he slid the pizza stone that always rested inside of the fireplace out with a hook that he had rigged up, placing the frozen disk atop it. “It’s colder than normal out there, I think. The wind’s really bad tonight and it’s not snowing so…” Whisler grinned and reached out to stroke Meri’s cheek. “You can look up and see nothing but stars and stars and stars. It’s beautiful.”

“I remembered to bring a coat,” Meridiana leaned her head into his gentle touch and smiled up at him.

Tucked in that little pocket of subspace was a fluffy winter jacket with a faux fur-trimmed hood, a bathing suit for the hot springs and something comfortable to wear for afterward. However, because she had brought the food as well there wasn’t much room for her to bring a full set of snow gear. The comfortable clothes were not much larger than the size of a sub sandwich once it was rolled up, nice and compact.

“Can you show me where our sun is from here?” She imagined that now their position in the universe had changed, all the constellations would have shifted and wondered if any would be recognizable from this perspective.

Whisler grinned and nodded, pleased that she had remembered to bring something warm. “Can…I…”

He paused and pursed his lips, looking chagrined. Could he show her where the sun was from here? No…he hadn’t ever thought to try to figure that out, he was so focused on just…dealing with his wonder as it was…once he had found the actual building. “…To be honest, I haven’t spent much time looking up…the first time I came here it was just cold, cold, cold and I…found my signet ring but…I mean…we could try to find it if you wanted…mostly I just use the outside for storage but…”

The knight shrugged.

“I hadn’t realized you’d be in to such a thing…I tell you, I’ll have to research it for the next time I bring you here, I’ll show you everything that I can, Meri.”
…Or he could just make it up. That might work just as well.

After all, who was to say that a random star wasn’t the sun?

“I’ll be honest, I’ve only been to an observatory once in my life. My grandfather took me there because there was a comet that was supposed to be flying close enough to the earth that it could be seen with the naked eye. I remember also seeing the moon as well as Venus that day.” At the time she had thought them to be rather un-extraordinary places of only rocks and dust debris as opposed to the beautiful gas giants in the outer solar system everything else just felt… dead. Who knew that it would take almost a decade to learn just how wrong she was in that assumption.

“If Polaris is the brightest star in our sky then we could just pick the brightest one in yours and say it is our Sun.” Who was to say that his wonder even faced their universe? For all they knew, Whislers wonder could simply be on the opposite side of the star that faces away and beyond our own horizon.

“But I do think it would be kind of fun to bring a small telescope with us sometime and see what’s out there, assuming there isn’t a snow storm going on.” Which given what it looked like outside, it seemed to reason that it might be a frequent occurance.

It seemed that everything that Meri said would bring a pleased grin to Whisler's face and he was glad that she had decided that it would be difficult to figure out just where the sun was, and glad also that she seemed so ready to just pretend that whatever bright star they saw would be their sun. He woudn’t argue with that at all.

“Oh, there’s not big snowstorms that often, I mean, it snows a lot but what do you expect when you’re on the top of a mountain?” He grinned. “You can see the sky a lot, though. Sometimes not all at once, but pieces here and there a lot of the time. Maybe someday you can spend the weekend up here with me if you’re really interested in stargazing. You can bring that telescope and we can see what might be out there.”

He stretched, walking away from the oven and grabbing one of the blankets from the pile. “Do you want to go out for a few minutes now? I know we don’t have a telescope, but like I said…it’s nice and clear and you can just about see forever.”

There was a moment of silence before he spoke again, holding a hand out to her. “I hope…this place isn’t boring you. I know it isn’t much…I’m trying to make it more but…it’s a lot and I’m just one guy.”

“I don’t find it boring at all,” She walked over to him and turned around so he could either drape the blanket over her shoulders or instead wrap his arms around her and hold the blanket around them both. “I honestly find this fascinating.”

“It is so different than the Rift or the Dark Kingdom,” dismal and dreary with a starless sky and monsters that wanted to devour her and everyone else she had answered the call with. Even though that was several months in the past it was still pretty terrifying to remember how the youma wouldn’t even obey the sovereigns or ascended corrupts that lead the mission. “I don’t feel like I have to watch my back or that there youma are going to be nipping at my heels.”

It was perhaps a bit lonely up here because. As far as she was aware of given her short aura sensing range, they were the only ones in the near vicinity. But that didn’t mean that there weren’t non-magical creatures lurking beyond his wonder either. However, she did find comfort in knowing that with Wisler here Meridiana felt confident that if he did sense something amiss that he would get them out of here quickly.

Whisler felt quite pleased that she had come over to him, and with a gentle touch, he wrapped the blanket around her, gently tying it loosely in front of her like a cape, tugging the back of it up to make a makeshift hood. “I used to love doing this with my blankets when I was younger. Especially when you pull it up so it makes a hood. I would pretend I was some sort of thief or whatever, with my hooded cloak.” He laughed. “You look quite enchanting…or well…you’d look more enchanting if the blanket was different. Perhaps…with that blanket you look a little silly but, still beautiful.”

It took a moment for him to grab one of the blankets for himself, tying it and pulling the hood up over his own head, though he hesitated and tucked the hood under his hat, using it to keep the hood in place. “Come, my hidden princess. Out into the cold we go.”

Taking the corrupt’s hand, Whisler led her out through the entry way, making sure that the inner door was firmly shut before taking the few paces to the outer door and pushing it open, shivering at the sudden wind that blew, whipping his blanket back.

“Ah! I told you it was cold tonight!” He tugged her into the snow and shivered, looking up. “Isn’t it lovely?”
