They had picked a Saturday and by radio reports, it would be cool out, partially sunny, with a chance of rain late in the evening. Winter dressed in jeans, sneakers, a yellow shirt, and dark Navy hoodie. Usually he reserved his glamour on Saturday's for hitting up bars or clubs at night but this was an exception. He never usually had company from the start when he glamoured. It was a nice change of pace.

He had set their transport up with a general, and with a backpack over his shoulder, they were teleported to the back alleyway behind a busy shopping district.

"Call when you're ready and the other general will pick you up." They instructed and Winter gave a salutte as the general vanished and left the pair their to do whatever they liked for the next couple hours until their glamour and their energy was exhausted.

"Got any place you need to hit up?" He asked as he adjusted the strap to the backpack he had.

Marissa gave a thoughtful hum. “Aside from food… Honestly, the only thing I need to get is replacement heads for my Dremel tool. But that’s not something that has to be done today.”

“So, if there’s something you need, or like, to do today feel free to lead the way.” Seeing him as Winter was definitely odd at first since the last time was under very different circumstances. Thankfully this time there was no tumbling around on the floor involved but it was still something to get used to.

Unfortunately, the time for going to the beach was drawing towards a slow end as summer weather faded into cooler temperatures. Otherwise, she would have liked to suggest at a place over near the docks but with the weather as it has been there wouldn’t be much of a view to see. Someday later perhaps but not today.

But for now, she wore a thin, light green sweater with an almost patchwork shawl-like scarf wrapped around her shoulders. She had never really cared much for doing anything fancy with her hair but before she was turned into a half youma it was naturally curly at the ends as it was now.

"Alright. All I need to do is pawn off some jewelery and stop off at the store. Other things I have to order off the computers when we get back." The chemicals he used to treat his furs were things he didn't want to lug around on his back.

"There is a shop here who doesn't ask questions as long as you bribe them with a few items once in a while." He said as he wandered down the alleyway and down the street, familiar with this drop off point since he requested it. "I'd like to eat somewhere too. Nothing fancy. My treat." He said, in high spirits now that he was let loose to wander about and get some fresh air and sun. Even with the clouds, he could still feel the warmth of the star beaming down on them.

People crowded the streets on their everyday routine or passing by in their cars. There was a volume to the city that was devoid in the Negaverse and he reached into his pocket to out in some sunglasses that were tinted purple to help him see better without squinting.

"Any foods you really like?" He asked as he lead them towards the pawn shop.

“Mmm, as long as it isn’t super spicy I’ll eat about anything really. Although,” She winced knowing it would sound a bit cliche. “Seafood is kind of my go-to dish.” Shrimp was easy enough to cook with, the same with baked or grilled salmon. Kalamari took a bit more work but there was a recipe that was worth the added effort.

“One of these days I’d like to go hunting for lionfish off the coast. Maybe grab a few lobsters while I’m at it.” The overly excited look in her eyes seemed to suggest that while the idea had been her own, the choice of words was that of the youma instead. Fishing or catching would have been a more ‘normal’ thing to say but ‘hunting’ suggested that they would be more than just food but rather her prey.

“I’ll cook some for you too if you’d like!” Marissa laced her fingers behind her back and rocked back on her heels almost playfully. He could be her guinea pig, that is, assuming he didn’t mind the smell, or taste, of fish. Perhaps it was the fresh air or diffused sun warming her skin that seemed to brighten her mood; but for the first time since meeting Marissa both looked, and felt, truly happy.

There was a definite bounce in her step from the joy she felt with this temporary freedom, especially since she was able to escape the Dark Kingdom with her neighbor and friend. “What about you?” She asked casually. Leaning forward just slightly she looked up at him with an intrigued expression “What else do you like other than meat that is still mooing?”

There was rare… and then there was rare; her shoulder was proof of that. And while it was covered at the moment there was a definite scar left from that incident, though while glamoured it looked more like an oddly shaped birthmark instead.

"I actually haven't had seafood in a long while. We can go find a place." With it being cooler, a Cioppino sounded pretty appealing.

The word hunting vibrated through him and brought thoughts of stalking and listening for the crescendo noises of crunched leaves and snapping branches. He had no associations to this with water, more or less avoiding it and having no great ability in it compared to the next person. In fact, he felt somewhat awkward in it now with his body though his large arms probably would help in some way.

But she had that same hungry twinkle in her eyes as he had with the word and he felt he could see into her irises into the core of something twisted and intertwined with her like two strands of DNA.

"Well, I like really all meats. I've gotten more of a taste for it since my change. But - I'm a bit of a sucker for bakeries. I really like pastries and cookies." It was probably the furthest thing a wolf-like youma could want and came from his human tastebuds. "It's funny that I can't remember anything from my past human life, but it brings a sense of nostalgia when I eat things like that. It's comforting "

"Anything else you like? I mean, if you are cooking for me, I'd like to try and cook something for you, though I'm not very good at it. Much better at stranger hobbies."

Learning that he had a bit of a sweet tooth came as a bit of a surprise considering the only other time they had shared a meal together he had completely passed by the fruit. Granted the options they had were limited and they were more of a snack thing than dinner but, then again, he didn't really grab anything extra to bring back for dessert either.

Righting herself once more, with an amused kind of smile, she waved her hand dismissively. “You don’t need to cook anything, it’s fine. That is unless it is something you would like to learn then maybe we can swing by a bookstore, find some recipes you’d like to try making?” Anything other than premade sandwiches would be a great change of pace.

Perhaps, next time she met up with Lopezite she could ask if she could borrow his kitchen for a day. Make some fresh baked cookies to bring back to the dorms for Wolframite to enjoy. Either that or keep them hidden until their next sparring match and maybe… just maybe it would placate him enough to think twice before biting her again.

"Well stopping by a bookstore can't hurt. It would at least give me something else to do with my time. That and I could probably go for some more stuff to read." His bookshelf was only really partially filled with books Faustite felt were good reading material. It was nice to have discussions while having tea but once his intense training was done, they didn't do it so much anymore. His general was often busy nowadays.

"Be nice if we could have our own kitchen." He sighed before stopping and opening a door to the after-mentioned pawn shop. A rather Stern looking man in a polo, thick glasses, and heavy-sunken eyes turned from the tv broadcast of some football team to look up at them.

"Hey." He said, moving up to set his backpack on the counter. From there, he reached to pull out several necklaces, and 3 rings.

"Who is that?" He said, looking at Marissa.

"Business associate. She knows to be quiet. Don't worry. We work together." Winter clarified.

"Don't have her come doing the same s**t. I don't need the attention. She goes through you." He said and Winter nodded. "You got it."

The man then set to work looking at the pieces and talked the price of each he was willing to offer. Winter did not haggle him and agreed. One if the rings was not discussed as the owner simply took it. Money was given and backpack zipped up, Winter pocketed the money and ushered Marissa out the door. There had been no idle chitchat between the owner and Winter aside from a hello and a goodbye.

"Well, how about we find a bookstore." He said, looking to her. "Oh, and like he said. If you don't find a place to pawn on your own that you can trust to not tell the cops, you can give it to me. You won't get the best price, but you'll get enough."

He walked away from the pawnshop down the sidewalk.

"So aside from cooking, what else are you interested in as hobbies? You said stone carving. We should find a hardware or craft place for that piece you need right?"

During the time it took Winter to pawn off his belongs, Marissa had been wandering around the shop idly, glancing inside various glass cases as she roved around the narrow isles only stopping a few times when some small trinket caught her eye.

At the time she had thought nothing of the transaction. However, once Winter had escorted her back outside and he mentioned something about not telling the cops, she gave him a bit of a concerned look “My rocks won't earn me anything from him.” she shrugged uncaring since they weren’t for sale anyway.

“Just don’t put me in a position where I’ll have to bail you out of jail.” She poked him somewhat playfully in the arm and left it at that. What he chose to do with his time and things were on him; she was not his mother and it was not her place to reprimand him either.

“Anyway, as for hobbies, probably doesn’t come as a surprise but I enjoy pretty much anything watercraft related. Kayaking, canoeing, water skiing just to name a few.” Drifting lazily down a river in an intertube was also very relaxing and something she longed to do. Perhaps thats why she felt so agitated and antsy as of late, the Dark Kingdom had no place for her to partake in any of these sports so she could simply let out this pent up energy.

“Used to do dragon boat racing during my first two years of college.” But her final years simply got too busy with all the required credits she had to take. The hours just honestly didn’t align to allow her to practice with the team. “I’m a certified scuba diver, or rather I use to be… No point in holding onto most of my gear, but I’m not quite ready to let it go yet.” The wetsuits were worth keeping but the air tank and breathing apparatuses not so much when she can breathe underwater without it.

He barked a laugh at that. "No. I got all of that stuff during my patrols. You and I, we can't have jobs like these people. So it's a way to get some cash and get stuff. We're not so fortunate to be given wads of cash from some Sugar Daddy." At least he hasn't found anyone like that.

"Anyways, I won't be getting caught. Our side has fingers within the law and anyways, I'm dead. They wouldn't even pull me up in their books. I'm all good." He said this with a easy sort of confidence about his own protection from jail time.

"But if you wind up need anything, just tell me. Okay? Not like it's really my money." He said with a sly smile.

"Hmm. Not going to have any luck having that unless you make your own swimming pool somewhere or get one if those stand alone kits. You talk about natural water more. Do the chemicals in swimming pools hurt you now?" He asked, curious if the likes of dislikes about her and her youma influences.

"Hmmm. Sounds complicated I can't recall if I ever went in any deep water ever. I know I can swim but that sounds like some kind of technical science to it." Scuba diving sounded a bit terrifying to him but he wasn't made for the water.

He just realized something and chuckled.

"I just realized. We're team Surf and Turf."

PostPosted: Mon Sep 02, 2019 9:27 pm

Grateful for the change of topic, Marissa snorted at his sudden realization. “Surf and Turf…” she smiled and rolled her eyes. That name just made her more hungry than anything.

“You know, I actually haven’t been in a pool since this whole thing happened so I really don’t know if the chlorine would affect me or not. What I can tell you is that there doesn’t seem to be a difference between saltwater versus fresh.” Thinking about it, the reservoir water didn’t seem to phase her either when she visited it with Samir last month.

“But if you’re worried about drowning I’m sure instincts would kick in and you could doggy paddle back to shore.” She made an imitating motion with her hands. Though dormant, Marissa could have sworn she felt her youma side chuckle.

“I’m just teasing,” Pressing her palms together she looked up at him with an almost ashamed or regretful expression. “Please don’t kill me” she pleaded.

She got a swift but playful hit to her not bitten arm. "I'm not going to kill you. But keep it up and I might punch the other arm." He teased.

"I haven't swam since changing. I know I swam in Scylla's planet so I have memories of it. I can't imagine a pool in the Negaverse but I'm sure if we have cats who can make crazy magic items, we can engineer a working pool somewhere. If you can tolerate the smell of chlorine."

He watched as they passed festive autumn signage and premature pumpkin displays.

"Do you have any plans for Halloween?" He asked, looking over at her. "Holidays are coming up."

Caught mid step Marissa stumbled a few steps to the side “Fair enough,” she grinned up at him while rubbing her arm as if he had actually hurt her. Although, had they been back at the Dark Kingdom she would have considered taking him up on the challenge. See if she could antagonize him enough to try hitting her again because what she had in mind would make it worth getting bit again.

Her amused grin soon shifted to a bit of a perplexed expression though it was unclear which comment prompted the reaction.

“Halloween?” The tone in her voice seemed to suggest that she hadn’t realized how late in the year it had already gotten. But when you live your life in a place where seasons don’t really present themselves in the same way as they do in Destiny City, perhaps she could be forgiven for losing track of time. “I’ll be honest, I haven’t really given it much thought.” I suppose this will be the first year I won’t be able to spend it with my family.

“I’ll probably just stick to staying in my room and watch movies like Hocus Pocus.” Something lighthearted and fun.

When they arrived at the bookstore, Marissa opened the door and stepped aside, “What about you? Any plans to go out with the other-” She paused realizing they were in an area where sound carried really well. “Co-workers…” she added hesitantly.

"I don't know many people from work in a personal level. Maybe one, but he has a new friend and I'm kinda pissed at him for being an a** last time. I'm sure he'd probably go off with normal people anyways." He grumbled as he followed her into the bookstore, not skipping a beat in switching from private Nega lingo to public safe speak.

"It's the one holiday you can go out without glamour and no one will pay you any weird attention and probably will compliment your creative costume. You should come with me and find a bar. Feel human for a night. Being how we are, it goes away after a few hours. It's a dumb curfew to look this way before going home. If you went out on Halloween, you could be out all day and around people, no one on the other side will bother you." He said as he passed a stay of Spooky Selections on a table, picking one up idly before setting it down.

They needed to find cookbooks. He also wanted to find out more about tracking and wilderness survival.

"Are you going to stay in your room for Thanksgiving and Christmas?" Like her, he would be in the Negaverse for the holidays. Unlike her, he had no past memories of celebrating holidays to look back with heartache fondly over.

“You’re right.” Marissa picked up one of the new arrival cookbooks for the InstaPot and fanned through the pages. “It would be kind of silly to not take advantage of the holiday, hmm?” She held the book against her chest as she walked around the table to one of the bookshelf stands. There she picked up one on grilling seafood dishes. The pictures looked amazing and instructions were simple enough to follow.

“If you don’t mind the company, I’d be happy to join you.” Who knows, maybe she might ditch the lieutenant wetsuit uniform for something more fun or fantasy instead, assuming it wouldn’t make him uncomfortable; it’s been so long since she wore a costume, kind of sounded like fun a bit.

“As for Thanksgiving or Christmas, I don’t think I have much of a choice.” Her glamour wouldn’t even last the flight to go see her parents. Not that she could see them anyway. “If it’s allowed I’d like to at least get a small tree-topper Christmas tree for my room.”

Although, in all honesty, if given the chance Marissa would rather find a place far from Destiny City where nobody could sense her aura and just simply sit outside and watch the snowfall. Either by herself or in the company of another, but sitting next on the floor by a warm fire seemed far more appealing than on top of her bed with an image of a fireplace on her TV.

“What about you? Any thoughts of getting out and going somewhere?”

"Perfect." And now he could have a drinking buddy. Stumbling home was less depressing when you were with someone else. He looked forward to a night he didn't have to cram everything in a few hours.

Looking at the shelf, he picked out one on butchering and started to flip through it. There was plenty of small game around and he always wondered that, at least with rabbits, if he could use the meat or if it would be too risky. The racoons he wouldn't risk, but could you eat fox?

"I don't see why you can't have a tree. You can out anything in your room as long as it doesn't burn down the building." He glanced trying to spot where the outdoors section was located.

"Not sure about the holidays yet. Wanted to see about renting a cabin and going hunting for bigger game. Only so much in the city. I'm not sure how I'd handle being around everyone off to their families. Makes me uneasy thinking about it. Anyways, all the nicer cabins near loudges will be for vacation goers to go skiing. The small ones in the middle of nowhere should be free. Can just pack a bag and go. Not like I have to save up for presents for people. Can just save up for that, and no one cares about being away for the holidays cause everyone will be busy."

"Do you - handle cold water okay or does that scare you since....you know?" He didn't look at her as he idly looked at a book, reading the back.
