This is a social group, but also an elusive one. They are tricksters and charmers and are often mistaken for magical beings due to their habit of appearing and disappearing at random. They are secretive and wild, but close-knit and protective of each other. They are almost tribal or native in theme and nature.

The protector: Reynard Lokison

-INCOMING-

Personality: When he speaks it is more growl and snarl than speech, though he is more the silent type. Wildly unpredictable and violent at times, Reynard is a paragon of Chaos. He is also intensely loyal to his mate. She seems to be the only thing that can reign him in and command him. He is the silent muscle behind her, though anyone mistaking his silence as ignorance would be sorely mistaken.

How the Herd reacts to him: He is viewed as having descended from Loki himself and not only is he a shifter but he also is processed of 5 tales. The herd sees him as incredibly intimidating, even terrifying. They view him as almost god-like or as a living spirit himself. They tend to give him a wide berth.

Herd info

Mischief, Secrets, Chaos, Fierce independence - Traits of the Vulpine herd.

The Vulpine herd is an ancient one that has managed to elude discovery for many generations. They are recently coming to light within the Kawani lands, but not due to any carelessness by the herd. Rather Vixen, the Alpha, has decided to join the world – albeit only slightly.

The foxes are swift and clever and able to move undetected through the woods whenever they wish, thanks to their superior sense of hearing and camouflaging techniques. They are wary of others but also possessed of an insatiable curiosity that has lead them to reveal themselves now and again to the locals. This behavior was prohibited under the rule of the previous alpha, but with her peaceful passing a new era has dawned. It’s impossible for outsiders to know exactly how many members the herd has because the members can seemingly disappear and reappear at random with no more than one or two in view at a time. The herd members themselves are very social with each other and live very tight-knit lives in their community.

Despite how secretive the herd is many members have been seen and interacted with others outside of the herd. It was simply forbidden to allow others to find their homelands prior to Vixen taking control. She’s tentatively opened their borders and is interested in seeing what other cultures might be out there. The Vulpine herd has become extremely prosperous and has a lot of wares to share with the outside world and wishes to open trade. They also have a great deal of wisdom to impart to those who are patient enough to listen.

The herd is generally neutral in the politics of the world, only bothering with things that affect them directly. Most members are care-free and playful, treating the world as one big joke. Some play tricks on others that can range from harmless and entertaining to mean and unfortunate. They generally have a hard time focusing on one thing for too long, as they are constantly exploring and trying to learn new things.

What a fox of the Vulpine herd knows of the world dwarfs the average soquili. They have learned to live in perfect balance with nature and to thrive even in the bitter cold of the mountains. They have a straightforward, practical approach to most problems that arise. They are unfazed by issues and instead are quick to find a solution without missing a step. They have amazing abilities to assess situations, compile data, and create a course of action – all within moments. Their brains seem to work differently from others and can make leaps and mental connections so fast they almost seem random. Because of this they are often taken as fools and seen as less intelligent by some. They simply see the world differently and have active, curious minds.

Many of the Vulpine herd are very quiet, preferring to observe the world and ponder its mysteries. They can be very tight-lipped and coy, almost teasing about their thoughts when talking to another. It can be very difficult to know anything for certain about these types, but their eyes always say that they know more than they let on.

They choose their own leader and can decide to elect a new one whenever they choose, though it is rare that leadership is changed before the current Alpha had lived her full life. It's considered a great honor to serve the herd in this roll, and the alpha can choose to step down and pass the reigns to whomever they wish as well.

((If Fatal Irony becomes inactive this is full permission for others to step up and "elect" a new alpha to run the herd))

Their Beliefs

The Gods: Loki is an important god in their pantheon. Also worshipped: Anansi, Elegua, Eris, Kokopelli, Laverna, Lugh, Veles, Wisakedjak

The Spirits: These are the types of spirits that the herd acknowledges. They can be blamed for any occurrence good or bad.

The zenko (善狐, literally 'good foxes') are benevolent, celestial foxes associated with Inari; they are sometimes simply called Inari foxes in English.

The yako (野狐, literally 'field foxes', also called nogitsune) tend to be mischievous or even malicious.

Death: It is believed that after death the Vulpine members roam the world as spirits, either the Zenko or the Yako, and earn extra tails as their power grows. After reaching 1,000 years of age and gaining its ninth tail, a kitsune turns a white or golden color, becoming a tenko (天狐, 'heavenly/celestial fox'), the most powerful form of the kitsune, and then ascends to the heavens. Those who are born with multiple tails already are said to be connected to the spirits and to be more advanced and spiritual due to their connectedness with the spirits. They do not need the full 1000 years to ascend.

Shifters: Shifters are seen as very connected to nature and the gods as well and are highly respected. Since this herd worships chaos and mischief it doesn't matter what the temperament of a shifter is, they still are highly respected.

Living Gods - There are two per year, one to represent the Kitsune Spirit and one to represent the Nogitsune Spirit. Both remain the Living Gods for the full year and participate in festivals and ceremonies as needed. During this year they wear ceremonial items and behave as the avatars of the Two Spirits. For that year they must stay within the herd lands and spend a lot of time in prayer or adoration, where herd members can come to worship them and give them offerings and prayers.

Festivals and Celebrations

Naming Ceremony - This is a one-night solemn ceremony where the next year's Living Gods are announced. The same two will be the Living Gods for the whole year, participating in both festivals and any other ceremonies for the year. At this point the previous years' Living Gods step down and pass the ceremonial reigns to the new years' pair. For a month the two new Living Gods go into isolation with the Mystic Leader to commune with the spirits and be taught how they must act and what is expected of them for the coming year.

Winter Solstice - Kicks off the Season of Kitsune. VULPINE NEW YEAR - KITSUNE/NOGITSUNE FESTIVAL - Every year there is a festival where two herd members are selected to be "living gods", one representing the Zenko, called the Kitsune and the other representing the Yako, called the Nogitsune. The Nogitsune goes around pranking the herd members and sabotaging contests and causing mischief, all while trying not to be seen by anyone. If someone sees the Nogitsune they call out for the Kitsune who comes to frighten them away and fix whatever they did. The Kitsune also goes around trying to do good deeds and give blessings to herd members. This is a favorable time to get married. Herd members dress up and decorate according to which side they want to root for. There are contests and little skits throughout the week with mock battles between the Nogitsune and Kitsune and the herd members like to bet on which will win the festival overall.

If the Kitsune wins it means the following year will be bountiful, both with the harvest and with kits being born. The veil between worlds will be closed, meaning no malevolent spirits causing trouble but also a lessoned link to their deity.

If the Nogitsune wins it means the veil between the worlds will be thinner for the coming year, which means more spirits will be running around causing mischief. Kits born during a Nogitsune year tend to be better mystics due to their closeness with the spirit world however they also tend to be more unpredictable.

Summer Solstice - Kicks off the Season of Nogitsune - CELEBRATION OF SPIRITS - There are altars all around the herd camp and during this time the herd members decorate these lavishly and give offerings to these spirits. For the bad spirits they pray that they will stay away, and for the good spirits they pray for their attentions.

Spring Equinox - Balance, games that tie - FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS - Celebration of all the crafts and things the herd members make. A celebration of creation. First festival open to the outside world. Lots of stalls set up, lots of food, music, and things to buy or barter for.

Autumn Equinox - Balance, games that tie - KITSUNE/NOGITSUNE CELEBRATION - Two "Living Gods" are selected but they go around the herd camp to be idolized and worshipped. There are several "fights" between the two for control. It all seems real for the kids, but the end is harmony. game that ends in tie, though the adults pretend there are stakes. Very similar to the New Year celebration except it's rigged for a tie and the end celebration is a dance, signifying the importance of balance and necessity of both the Kitsune and Nogitsune. The adults play it up like the stakes are real high if one wins over the other, but it's always a tie. The kids believe the contests are real.

They move the kits around among the herd nesting grounds as needed to keep predators and strangers away from them. When necessary they also will fight off danger to protect the kits. This can function as a day care/school situation where the parents drop them off during the day and pick them up later.

Kits - The children of the herd. The children are raised together in secret locations to keep them away from prying eyes or danger. They learn about their culture and the skills they need to properly evade others as they wish. They learn hunting, scavenging, healing, and the mystic/spiritual ways of the herd.

Some random fox-related stuff

A single fox crossing your path is considered good luck, but watch out for a group of foxes they are considered a sign of great misfortune!

The fox has many superstitions - especially as people use to / still do hunt foxes.

Obviously, we all know that the fox is a wild animal that is endowed with great traits ranging from, cunning, swiftness, courage, persistence, good health, great eating habits, highly skilled and even ingenious. The traits are believed to range from the physical, spiritual and mental perspectives. The fox is thought to have the capability of teaching one on how to walk through the woods. It is the master of camouflaging as in most instances it has the sense of creating a harmonious blending in its environment. It displays characters such as being still and patience and communication abilities.

It is believed that the animal has a high sense of smell and in most cases a fox would help one to uncover unpleasant situations likely to happen. As a result seeing a fox would help someone avoid something terrible happening. The animal was believed to be a perfect camouflage to its surrounding. There existed a belief that if one happened to have the spirit of a fox which was caught through cutting off its tail then such a person could never be seen or even noticed by his close allies whenever they tried to search for him or her.

The fox was believed to have a very high sense of hearing than any other creature. As a result people believed that the fox communicated with the spirits. This was a superstitious presumption people used it for ritual purposes. Whenever a family member fell sick, a fox was purchased as there was a strong belief that the fox would communicate to the spirits - hopefully granting great health for the sick. The fox that was domestically tamed for sacred reasons.

The fox is endowed with highly sensitive eyesight. The animal is able to see in long range even in the middle of the night. It was believed that if a fox made a noise it was a clear indication that there was either a thief or witchcraft near the home. Thus, it was used to safeguard ones home against the attacks from evil spirits and the charm of wizards - since it was believed that its sound could chase them away. However in some of African countries, it was believed that if one happened to meet a fox or one happened to cross in someone's way while walking home, it was believed that that person would not reach home without meeting either a witch or thief. Here are some specific superstitions about a fox - just scroll down!

If a fox crosses your path it means that one is going to encounter a significant gain in life.
Seeing a fox near ones property is a bad omen. Death may come from the family or some bad situation.
To see one fox alone is a lucky symbol.
Being bitten by a fox then you will not live for more than seven years.
Seeing more than one fox together is an omen of disaster.
To nail a foxes head to a door removes bad spirits and witches.
Fox fat rubbed in fat cures going bald.
Carrying a foxes teeth helps treat a bad leg.
In Korea they believe that if a fox barks with it’s face at you then someone will die that you know.
To fight a fox means an enemy will be defeated.
Japanese think seeing a fox is extremely lucky.
To see a baby fox with or without it’s mother is a positive sign - you will win in love.
A fox barking is a warning of danger in life. There was a case recorded of a fox barking before a man died from falling from a tree.
A Persian superstition believes that a fox barking means rain.
Seeing a white fox denotes ill fortune.

There is a good reason for the old adage: “clever as a fox”. In truth, these creatures are extremely clever, and remarkably resourceful. From hunting strategies to camouflage – the fox gets about the business of living life with sass and class. What’s more, the fox is a jaunty critter.

Observe them in the wild, and you can’t help but think everything is a big joke for the fox, and their whole world a playground.

In China, fox animal symbolism revolved around the afterlife. Lore has it that a fox sighting was thought to be a signal from the spirits of the deceased.

Fox animal symbolism takes a turn of intelligence in the Celtic realm, as the Celts believed the fox to be a guide, and was honored for its wisdom. The Celts understood the fox knows the woods intimately, and they would rely upon the fox as their guide in the spirit world.

In Japan, the fox was considered one of the rain spirits, and a messenger of Inari the rice god. Here the fox also symbolizes longevity and protection from evil.

In Native American lore, fox animal symbolism deals with two interpretations. One perspective (Northern tribes) observes the fox as a wise and noble messenger. The other (Plains tribes) views the fox as a trickster playing pranks, or worse – luring one to demise.

Quick-thinking
It is noteworthy to observe the fox while it is on the hunt. We see its entire body is pointed like an arrow – straight and tightly aimed. This is a symbolic message for us to set a determined, and powerfully focused mindset in order to “hit the target” of our desires.

The red in the fox is representative of a solar emblem. What do I mean by that? Simple, the fox is metaphorically aligned with the sun. In countless legends and myths, the fox and the sun are closely connected. As a solar emblem the fox animal symbolism deals with:

Desire
Passion
Intensity
Expression

The fox may have a reputation as a trickster in many myths, but this critter doesn’t joke around when it comes to executing clever strategies for survival.

The fox encourages us to think outside of the box and use our intelligence in different, creative ways. The fox also brings us a message to try to approach our circumstances differently that we normally would. Be aware of some of our habits, and try a different angle of action.

The fox also a reminder that we must utilize all of our resources (seen and unseen) in order to accomplish our goals.

Sometimes this means calling upon some unorthodox methods. Furthermore, the fox is a sign to be mindful of our surroundings.

Phenomenally effective shape-shifters and incredibly adaptable, the fox beckons us to not make too many waves but rather, adapt to our surroundings, blend into it, and use our surroundings (and circumstances) to our advantage.

Qualities Of The Fox Totem

Focus

Right-action

Determination

Fox Totem, Spirit Animal
People with the fox totem are intensely loyal. Often they are a joy to watch or to be around. They are energetic, outgoing, personable, and very flattering. While not exactly social butterflies, fox people can use that sly energy and their keen sense of camouflage to “fit right in.” Folks with this animal totem are also keen observers and skilled at remaining unnoticed. In other words, they blend into their environment and move around unnoticed in any company or group situation.

People with the fox totem also adapt and portray themselves as whoever they need to be in any given interaction. This affinity for fitting in often means that they are a jack of all trades. Folks with this spirit animal totem will take an interest and educate themselves superficially in a significant number of areas while mastering none. Moreover, this allows them to chat or engage in small talk with ease. However, this does not mean that they are disingenuous. It merely says that they do care and take an active interest in the feelings of those around them.

Folks with this power animal are also very creative problem solvers. They can even seem eccentric because they are quick to think outside of the box. Their swift wit and thinking is a universal tool for them.
