Permafrost loved Autumn. She loved the leaves falling to the ground, the vibrant golds and reds littering the forest and breaking up the emeralds of the pines and spruces. The crunch as one places their foot and the crisp scent of colder days to come, all made Permafrost giddy with excitement. And giddy for another reason as well. Belly already starting to bulge, the she-wolf could feel the little ones shift as she slowly walked the mountainous forest. It would be winter before they'd arrive, probably during a blizzard to follow in their daddies footsteps. But for now, they were settled, and Permafrost was out enjoying the day. Alone. Which was rare since she'd started to show. Usually her mate Frost Shatter, or her, well, previous lover Cloudberry, would be shadowing her. But she'd managed to elude the two of them and had the day to herself. She was thoroughly enjoying it too, ambling along with no destination in mind - letting her feet take her where they will. They'd taken her to the outskirts of the territory and she slowly meandered along the border of the pack-lands. Nothing bothered her - though she'd seen plenty of foxes and smaller prey - Permafrost was very large for a wolf, and towered over all that she'd come across. So long as no bears were about, it was fairly safe for her to roam where she pleased.

Invisible Shade was tired. His weary eyes stole a glance at his friend Boulder ("friend" felt too light for the bond they shared, but it was the term most found acceptable to describe the pair, he'd discovered), before shifting forward, suddenly widening. Tail standing up, he lifted his snout to the air, and drank in the scent. Wolves. And a lot of them. A smile grew across his maw as he looked back at Boulder. "Do you smell that? I think we're close!"

The two had been traveling night and day, barely taking a moment to rest, since they'd caught wind of the wolves of Hornfels Hollow. Trouble muddling Boulder's past, the two had left home just a little too young, and had been on their own since. Well, now on their own, but with one another. Serving as both hunter and protector of their little duo. It had been fine, but both of them dearly missed having a family. It was torture, rogue life alone - it was truly more difficult than either of them had imagined, but they managed. It wasn't glamorous, but it wasn't doable, if not desirable. When they'd heard of Hornfels Hollow, both of them seemed to experience a dual singing in their hearts. A pack that was family - not just wolves you surrounded yourself with and shared a home with, but ones with which you developed a deep, familial bond with. That was... well, it was everything they had ever dreamed of. At least, since all the trouble with Boulder's family. It sounded like nirvana.

At the smell of the pack - he was sure it was them, they had to be on the edge of their territory - a pep worked its way into Invisible Shade's step. Was this it? Was this home? He glanced around, not waiting for Boulder's response, suddenly in wonderment at the beauty of the lands around him. Trees - trees everywhere - in all manner of colors. It was fall, after all - and he had spent his puphood in the forest, so he wasn't new to this phenomenon - but all of a sudden the colors seemed brighter, the trees fuller, everything new. The goofy smile wouldn't leave his face as he moved ever so slightly closer to Boulder and bumped his shoulder playfully, gleefully. This was it. He was sure of it.

Sick and tired of a journey that had no fruition and the pain that stung his chest whenever he thought of his family. They had to keep pressing forward -- there was nothing behind them. They had nowhere to return to. No, that was a lie, and a bold one. Invisible Shade had a place to go to, but not him. Yet, Shade refused to leave his side, and for that he felt guilty and grateful at the same time.

He was tired of it all. He just wanted to finally stop moving his paws and curl up tightly somewhere safe. Somewhere home. He knew Shade silently put up with the adventure, but Boulder wanted more for his lifelong friend. A life. Something that would fulfill Shade. This wasn't it. Struggling day in and out to survive a world they hadn't asked for wasn't the future he wanted.

He had been quiet for the past few days; eyes focused on the ground and head low. However, when Shade spoke it broke that silence. Boulder lifted his head, eyes swimming with hope and disbelief. He didn't smell it -- not yet. Perhaps his nose had grown dull with exhaustion, but he knew Shade would never lie to him. The small wolf padded after Shade, not needing to be told twice. The nudge was met with an excited yip, which died in his throat as they stumbled upon a she-wolf. They were still a good distance. For now.

      "Shade, wait -- look."

Permafrost had never been a prime hunter, a force to be reckon with, an apex predator. Yes she was a dire wolf. Yes she was large. But no, she was neither attentive nor particularly skilled in the art of being a killer. So if she hadn't been looking up, admiring the forest around her, she'd have probably missed the arrival of the two other wolves until they were much closer.

As it was, the arrival of the two strangers elicited nothing more than a bit of insecurity in the she-wolf. She had absolutely no interest in fighting, being as submissive as she was, but this was her home and her stomach bulged with her unborn pups still in need of protection. She would definitely try to chase them off if they proved to be a threat, but for now she'd wait and see who these newcomers were. She wasn't inclined to judge without at least exchanging pleasantries. Plus, the duo must already know they were near pack lands, the area was littered with the smell of her companions, leading the she-wolf to think that these two were here for a reason.

Deciding there was not much more to do than wait and find out their purpose, Permafrost slowly sat, ears perked forward, and blue eyes fixed on the strange wolves.

At Boulder's direction, Shade lowered his nose and instead used his eyes to scan their newfound environment. Almost immediately, he spotted a large shewolf sitting on her haunches, ears up, staring at the two of them. She seemed curious, not threatening, which gave Invisible Shade a quiet hope that they'd finally found the pack territory they'd been seeking.

Smiling, he flicked Boulder with his tail, a second wind upon him. He bounded forward, eager to speak with this new wolf, caution thrown to the wind. As he neared her, he slowed, not even thinking to look back to ensure Boulder was close behind. Boulder seemed a little worse for the wear than Shade, so the darker wolf was naturally taking the lead on things.

"Hello, there," Shade started, bowing his head in deference. "My name is Invisible Shade, and this is Boulder... we are seeking the family that is Hornfels Hollow. You wouldn't happen to... know anything about them, would you?" The hope in his voice was tangible, something that he couldn't hide if he tried. They'd been lone rogues for many moons now - it was about time they found a real home in which to settle down. He only hoped she was a friendly wolf; he really didn't feel up to dueling right this moment.

Permafrost blinked at the swift approach of the dark wolf. She hadn't been expecting him to bound forward with such exuberance...and it was doubly a surprise to her that he had the energy to do so, as her lapis eyes took in the sorry state that the newcomer presented. Wherever he'd come from the journey must of been either long or trying. But, he inclined his head and spoke politely. Internally the she-wolf sighed with relief.

"A pleasure Invisible Shade...and Boulder" Permafrost glanced around the dark wolf to his companion who was still approaching. She couldn't see him as well, gaze hindered by the wolf before her, but from what she could tell the other wolf looked, well, tired.

Hefting her bulging belly up, Permafrost rose. Once back on all fours, the she-wolf returned the bow. "I'm Permafrost. I do indeed know of Hornfels, in fact, you have currently just crossed into our territory." She gave a tentative tail wag, a small smile coming to her maw. "From the looks of you two, I'm hoping you are looking for sanctuary and not coming to tell us about an invasion or something equally as terrible." The words were said flippantly, but a seriousness underlie the question.

He had been listening, padding up slowly until he was partially behind Shade. He settled onto his haunches, weariness sweeping through him like a wave. An ear flicked once, acknowledging her claim of home. So they were close, then. He hadn't spoken to the new wolf yet, and for a moment he felt shame flicker. He hoped the other hadn't considered him rude.

"Sanctuary... sanctuary sounds nice. We've been walking for a..." he drifted, trying to remember exactly how long. When that failed he heaved a sigh, a tired smile resting on his face. "Too long, I suppose."

While Boulder wearily croaked out a response, Invisible Shade eyed him sadly. All he wanted was the best for his friend, and hopefully with the news that they'd entered the Hollow, things would begin to turn up.

As Boulder quieted, Shade swung his head back around to Permafrost, his tear wagging slowly in response to hers only moments before. "We heard a family lives here, and the two of us are woefully without one of those." His eyes remained sad yet hopeful. "Do you happen to know how one might venture into membership here?"

"Ahhh sanctuary is it?" Permafrost too, eyed Boulder somewhat sorrowfully. It had been a while since she'd seen such a bone-weary wolf. Thankfully Hornfels had lots of room to spare and more than enough help to get these two back on their feet.

At Invisible Shade's words about family, Permafrost's head rose a bit, her ears perking up. More than just sanctuary then. Looks like they want a home.....hah Frosty will wonder what I've dragged home once again. She knew her mate, Frost Shatter would be pleased with her choice, but that he'd tease her about it later. She was too soft-hearted for her own good.

"Well friends, you are correct. Hornfels Hollow is a family. Although we aren't a large pack, we do keep care of one another, and fortunately it is rare for us to turn away newcomers. Although I can't officially bring you into the pack, I can take you to our alpha Frost Shatter. He will make the final decision. I can tell you, either way, you'll be welcome to stay with us until you are well. We aren't the kind to kick out peaceful guests either." Her words were light, and happiness radiated through them and the prospect of new pack members. Permafrost enjoyed the thought of seeing these two males returning to proper health. Maybe it was incoming pups, or perhaps her sentimental nature, but she couldn't help wanting to nurture these two back to their prime.

"You're in luck that you came across me as opposed to any other packmember...I feel like our pace may well be matched at the moment." She smiled at that, and slowly padded a few paces forward. "If you'll follow me, I'll take you to the main den and Frosty.....maybe you can tell me where you've traveled from?"
