Personality: Shinji, on the surface, can be seen as childish. He doesn't seem to take anything seriously, goes against direct orders often, and pouts when he doesn't get what he wants. However, underneath the childish facade is a vast ocean of intelligence. He is constantly running through scenarios in his head and calculating statistics. Shinji also possesses a natural affinity for combat, in which his intellect is being used to read and predict his opponents actions.
Shinji is cocky, but he's cocky for a reason. His reputation precedes him, and those who recognize his appearance often refer to him as a Monster or as a Demon. Although he hates those nicknames, it helps to deter people from trying to fight him, for the most part. Oh, right, it should be mentioned that Shinji doesn't like to fight very much. His natural affinity for fighting, and his overall power, make him feel like it isn't worth it to fight for fun anymore. He has no qualms with sparring in order to help the new generation train, but going all out is boring to him. Shinji may seem like he's got ulterior motives, but he is fiercely loyal to Lord Death and Death City.
Shinji often feels like he is out of touch with human emotion, due to his psuedo-demonic nature. He slips in and out of this numb sensation in which his emotions are switched off, and during these moments there's a fraction of a second in which his face takes a neutral expression before he begins faking the emotions that he should be feeling. After he comes out of these numb sensations, he feels depressed and in the dark when he's all alone, sometimes breaks down into tears. He doesn't want to cease being human. He remembers what that felt like, and he doesn't want to go back.
One last tidbit of personality, Shinji doesn't talk about what happened 10 years ago, or about what happened before he came to the DWMA. He avoids these subjects or gives sub-par answers that lead to no information about the events leading up to now. Partly because he doesn't want to talk about it, partly because it is top-secret information, and partly because he doesn't remember some of it.

Master Swordsman
- Shinji is a sword specialist, who is revered as one of the most potent and terrifying swordsmen to ever graduate from the DWMA. He rarely picks up a sword due to his stance on fighting seriously, but he will pick one up if he deems the opponent worthy of an all out battle. He knows several styles of swordsmanship, but the two below are the most notable.
- Nanatsusaya: Shinji's deadliest technique, Nanatsusaya is the act of brandishing seven swords at once. It maximizes offensive power and has its own wealth of defensive power. This can be done by holding seven swords with various crooks of the body, or by using his Hemokinesis abilities as an extension of his hands and arms.
Infinite Sword Style: Shinji has enough knowledge and skill to utilize the Infinite Sword Style popularized by the samurai Masamune; however, he doesn't use it unless he faces an opponent who also uses the Infinite Sword Style. Shinji's words on this style of swordsmanship is that it is too powerful for one man to use, and as such he detests warriors who happen to learn or master this style.
Master Combatant
- Shinji became a combat instructor at the DWMA shortly after graduating from his years of school. As such, he is knowledgeable in several martial arts, and is regarded as a Master level combatant.
Assassin Training
- During his time at the DWMA and his training with the former Noctis group, Shinji became skilled in several tactics that are employed as part of an assassins training.

Path of the Demon
- Unlike most meisters of the DWMA, Shinji followed the path of the demon for the first half of his life. Until he was recruited by the Shinigami’s forces, he was recognized as a Kishin Egg and was seen as an enemy. However, rather than being executed, he made a deal with the Shinigami where he would be cleansed and would no longer eat human souls, focusing more on eating corrupted souls as an experiment. After a while, he had achieved the full realization of the Path of the Demon, one of the two paths that a warrior can travel as they train. In doing so, his physical body and his soul have undergone a metamorphosis.
- Demonic Physiology: Due to being on the Path of the Demon, Shinji’s body is stronger and more durable than most. His strength and speed are on par with a naturally born demon, and he is able to fight for much longer after receiving large amounts of damage.
Dense Skin: Shinji's skin is much thicker than the normal humans, making it harder to penetrate with bladed instruments. It isn't impenetrable, but it takes more force than normal to pierce it.
Madness Resistance: Shinji’s demonic physiology grants him a passive resistance to most madness. He is able to withstand the madness coming off of demonic level entities without any problems, and is able to be in the pressence of a Kishin longer than most individuals before the madness has an effect on him.
Madness Vacuum: Shinji is able to remove the presence of madness in the souls of others by literally sucking it out of them. It requires a kiss, but at the moment of contact, his soul wavelength invades the other's body and collects the madness within them, transferring it to his own soul before retreating. This ability, although it seems to be more of a supportive ability, also has the added bonus of giving Shinji's physical stats a slight boost.
Evil Aura: When Shinji gets serious in a fight, he emits an aura from his body that feels evil to those around him. Even if he doesn’t harbor any ill intent, the air that surrounds him becomes grim and foreboding.
Hemokinesis
- Shinji is able to manipulate the blood inside of his body, and any external sources of blood so long as it is exposed to the elements. This means that if one of his allies is cut, he is able to take control of the blood on the outside of their body as if it were his own.
- Increased Regeneration: Shinji’s control over his own blood allows him to force his own blood to clot at a faster rate, slightly speeding up his body’s natural regenerative rate.
Iron Forge: Shinji is able to manifest weapons and items made of iron on rare occasions where he has access to enough blood. He does this by creating the image of what he wishes to create out of blood, then removes everything but the iron held inside of the blood cells. He can also use this ability within his own body to an extent, allowing him to create an endoskeleton of iron underneath his own skin.
Blood Generation: Shinji is able to increase the rate at which his body produces blood.
Demonic Art - Okuru
- Shinji has mastered one of the hidden Demonic Arts: “Okuru.” This technique allows him to teleport distances of up to 50 meters so long as he can visibly see where he’s going to teleport.
Altered Aging
- Having traveled down the Path of the Demon using human souls for the first portion of his life, Shinji’s biological age has been skewed. Although most don’t know his real age, his physical age hasn’t seemed to change at all over the 10 years he was assumed dead. It isn’t clear whether this altered age is going to be a permanent freeze of his physical age, or if he just ages at a much slower rate than normal humans do.
Demon Art: Mageru
- Another one of the hidden Demon Art’s Shinji has trained to obtain, Mageru is the ability to “flex” or bend one’s own soul to produce a result in the physical world. The way this works is, when using this technique, Shinji’s soul compresses and releases on command, which normally happens in a single moment, and results in a shockwave. This technique can be used throughout the whole body or can be channeled through other body parts to augment attacks. Before Shinji’s disappearance, he seemed to have a bit of trouble using this ability, however, once he resurfaced in Death City, he is able to use this ability with seemingly no limit or negative side-effects. However, using Mageru throughout the whole body too many times has adverse effects that, regardless of training, cannot be mitigated.
- Chuumon: Chuumon is when Shinji uses Mageru throughout his whole body. This results in an outward pulse of 5 yards, pushing most people and objects away from him. This can only be used up to twice during battle.
Osu: Osu is when Mageru is utilized through a particular part of the body. This amplifies damage by layering an additional concussive force behind the initial strike. The force of this technique is even greater when used in a serious attack without holding back. The pure force of Osu, when used by Shinji, is strong enough to crack solid concrete if Shinji doesn’t hold back. Osu can be channeled into weapons or objects so long as Shinji is holding the objects.
Sekai no Chishiki
- Shinji seems to have an awareness of everything in his immediate vicinity. Sekai no Chishiki is the cause of this, and it acts as a very advanced version of Soul Perception. It is essentially like a constantly sweeping radar, reading the souls of everyone in the area, and providing information on objects as well. However, the weakness of this ability is that any form of ability that can hide or obscure someone's soul completely hides them from his perception unless he can physically see them.
Fushichoo
- One of the innate abilities that Shinji possesses, and a very unusual ability in the grand scheme, Shinji possesses the ability to resurrect himself from the dead. He doesn’t know how to activate this ability, or if there are prerequisites to use it, but essentially when he dies, his body literally burns away and the ashes form a new body, with his soul still inside. He doesn’t remember dying, nor does he know of this ability on any conscious level. However, there are stories in the DWMA library of a clan from long ago that channeled the power of a phoenix. This might be related to Shinji’s abilities, but that is still unknown.
Secret Sword, Durendal
- Shinji is in possession of one of the sacred swords of history, Durendal. Durendal possesses magical properties, of which Shinji is aware. However, it is unknown what all this sword is capable of. This sword is able to be stored in Shinji's blood, which is one of it's magical properties. Another thing to note is that the blade is seemingly indestructible, as well as sharp enough to cleave through solid rock. Most people have heard rumors of his possession of Durendal, but few know for sure. Shinji keeps this secret well guarded for the most part.

- Although he doesn't like to use a sword when he fights, unless it's absolutely necessary, Shinji has a goal to collect as many of the most prominent swords from history that he can. So far he has collected one.
He has a secret goal of building his own group similar to the one he was a part of all those years ago, to carry out the missions that Lord Death wishes to keep out of the eyes of the public.
He wishes to teach the newer generation how to fight properly, in order to further build the war potential of Death City.
Things to Note
- Shinji has been created with a design similar to a Yakuza boss. He dresses mostly in expensive suits, and has a reputation that makes him out to be more villainous in nature. This also helps feed into his goals of rebuilding the underground group that he was a part of.
Shinji isn't meant to participate in all out combat. He's designed to be an instructor or a sparring partner for the most part, with enough of his own power to participate in high-end combat should the situation arise.
The ability Fushichoo, with permission, will be expanded on in the future to have more aspects of a Phoenix. I will, in the meantime, give a bit more information on the clan that facilitated the ability and the background that is involved in it. However, that information is more so for story building and isn't common knowledge to the people of Death City. Shinji himself doesn't even know about that story.

Shinji’s story was kept from the public eye. In fact, the only things that common citizens and the students of the Death Weapon Meister Academy know for certain about Shinji is that he was a combat instructor for the school, and that he was supposed to be dead.
Let’s go back around sixty years ago. There was a village tucked away in a remote mountain range, far away from the rest of civilization. It was a humble place. They had developed their own tools, raised their own cattle, grew their own crops, and in essence had made their own self-sustaining town that rarely ever needed to venture to other parts of the surrounding area. Shinji’s parents were farmers. His dad spent most of the day out on the field tending to crops and animals, while his mom stayed home and took up the housework. When they found out she was pregnant, they were delighted at first. Kozue and Harushin had talked many times before about wanting a child, but they hadn’t had much luck until Shinji was conceived.
Once he was born, Kozue crumbled under the additional stress of taking care of her child and stopped doing as much work around the house, and Harushin, being a man of traditional values, didn’t take kindly to this. The two often fought over the slack in work, which began to affect the farming as well. The older Shinji got, the more they argued, and eventually they turned to alcohol to cope. Kozue was passive when she drank, letting the effect of the alcohol lull her off into sleep. Harushin, on the other hand, grew into a violent alcoholic who rarely left their home and spent most of his time yelling about little things. When he was old enough to start helping around the house, Shinji did most of the chores, and his father demanded that he also helped out by tending to the farm. This was when the madness started to set in.
Shinji’s routine was simple. He would wake up, go out and feed the animals, return home to do the chores, then go back out to the fields in order to tend to the crops. Once all of this was done, it was roughly around supper time so he had to cook dinner for his parents. Most of the time the meals weren’t up to Harushin’s standards, and as such Shinji received a beating. After they had finished their meals, Shinji retreated to his room and read any books that he could find in order to dull the tormenting emotions in his mind. This cycle continued for several years. During that time, a dark force within Shinji grew until one day, he snapped.
He woke up and began his day like normal. The chores were done, the crops were tended to, the animals were fed. Kozue had drank until she had passed out, and Harushin was preparing for the beating he would give Shinji if the meal wasn’t to his liking. All the while, Shinji held a strong smile on his face. The look in his eyes was distant, almost as if he wasn’t consciously aware of his surroundings at the time, but once his father stood up and struck him, it happened. Rather than crying out in pain like he normally would have, the young Gyukimaru lad began to laugh. His father took this as a blow to his pride and continued attacking his son until Shinji stopped laughing. When he did, a knife fell out from his sleeve. One that he had been hiding all day. Shinji grabbed this knife and plunged it deep into his fathers throat.
Kozue screamed and darted for the door, but Shinji’s fit of madness had instinctively awakened a dormant ability that no one knew he had. The blood from his father’s throat, and the blood that was pouring from Shinji’s own wounds, lashed out and grabber her before she could escape. The tendrils of crimson dragged her back. One slash and her life was forfeit. He doesn’t remember what drove him to eat their souls when they left their bodies, but he chalks it up to the madness that was driving him. The texture of the souls pleased him. They left him craving more, and one by one he laid waste to the citizens of the town.
Shinji’s thirst for souls at this point lead him outward, to other towns that were outside of the mountains. By this point, the adrenaline had worn off, and he could see through the madness somewhat. He didn’t want to be a killer, but he couldn’t stop himself. Like a guardian angel hearing his prayers, Lord Death sent a squad of meisters to dispatch of the monster he had become. He surrendered to them, begged them for their help, and after a quick chat with Death, the meisters decided to bring him in. They struck a deal. Death would employ some long lost forms of magic in order to purify Shinji’s body, so long as he promised to never devour another human soul. However, knowing that the thirst for souls might prove to still be a problem, he suggested that Shinji become an experiment for the school. He would participate in missions to dispatch of Kishin Eggs, and once the threat was dealt with, he would eat the corrupted soul like a weapon.
This sparked much controversy in the school. The faculty protested, but Death gave his word that if Shinji proved to be a problem, he would personally handle it. The students treated Shinji like a plague. They avoided him as much as possible, and the teachers kept their distance. The only formal combat training Shinji received was from professor Stein, who was an avid scientist and was intrigued by the idea of this experiment, and from the Death Scythes whenever they visited the school. Shinji never partnered with a weapon. Instead, he trained with a normal katana and other weapons that had no magical properties. Once he was able to go on his own missions without a squad to go with him, faculty members supervised the events in order to keep him in line. On one particular mission, while he was searching for the target, he found a sword, hidden away in a crypt. When he touched the sword, it glowed for a moment then it dissolved in a flurry of liquid that invaded Shinji’s blood and merged with him. Rather than going to the teacher to discuss what had happened, he continued the mission.
Eventually, Shinji had ingested enough souls to undergo a metamorphosis. He had fully realized the Path of the Demon, one of the two paths that warriors can travel down as they grow. His own soul had become formidably powerful for his age, and he began to display certain traits that demons were known to possess. However, his mind was clear, and his thirst for souls was nonexistent. The experiment was a success. When Shinji graduated, Death offered him a job as a combat instructor for the school. He mentioned that it was partly in order to monitor Shinji and make sure that he wasn’t going to regress to any previous habits, but it was mostly due to how skilled Shinji had become when it came to fighting.
Roughly a year later, Lord Death proposed an idea for a project. A team would be drafted of some of the most skilled Meisters and Weapons of the schools employ in order to form a black-cell organization known as Noctis. They would work on high-stakes missions that Death wanted to keep secret from the rest of the school and the public of the city. Shinji was one of the members who were initiated into this group. He took pride in his position on the team. His intelligence and his overall power with his abilities made him a valuable asset to the group. They took several assignments, all of which were a success, but their last mission proved to be too difficult for them to handle.
They were sent to a country that had been completely overrun with Kishin Eggs. They operated like a cult. Anyone who opposed the will of the Kishin was killed, and those who stayed were forced to become another Kishin Egg. Their goal was to build an army who would resurrect the Kishin Asura and they would be his fighting force. Death tasked the Noctis group with infiltrating this country and destroying this cult. They set off and began their mission without much issue, until they reached what was the countries capital.
The leader of the cult was a powerful being. His name was never revealed, but he was too strong for them to deal with. Even Shinji, who arguably had the highest durability in the group, was too heavily injured by this being with just a couple of attacks. The group retreated, planning to flee back to Death City and report of their failure. However, as they were making their escape, Shinji jumped in front of another attack from the leader in order to save his comrades. His body fell limp and they took the opportunity to leave, assuming he was dead.
Shinji doesn’t remember what happened next. He recalls bits and pieces. A fire, buildings collapsing, lots of blood, but that’s it. Where his memory pieces itself back together, he is standing on the edge of the capital. No signs of life remained. He began to make a journey back to Death City, but he had heard rumors through the grape vine that Noctis was disbanded. The underground network of information had played a fairly integral role in Noctis’ success, and it wasn’t too far fetched to think that these rumors were true. Shinji thought that staying away from the city for a while would be a good thing. If he returned too soon, especially with a report of the mission being a success after all, Death might think about reforming the group. Most of the members would have been against that decision after such a handy defeat, and that would have caused issues with their synchronicity.
After travelling the world, looking into ancient myths and texts, trying to learn more about the sword that had implanted itself into his body, which up until then he had ignored, Shinji amassed a fair deal of knowledge about several ancient weapons from history. The one that he had found was known as Durendal, and he practiced drawing the weapon out until he was able to do it without much effort. By the time he was satisfied with his research, ten years had passed. Shinji was homesick, and he figured that ten years was a long enough time to stay away. He made the journey back to Death City, unaware that everyone had declared him dead.
