Marsh Stone Union
^ mental note to make a pretty banner ^

On one of the sides of the Bluestone Mountains resides two packs - one living on the cliff side while the other lives within the marshes below. For ages, these two packs have resided side by side, fighting for land and ownership of the resident elk herd. With tensions on the rise, the leaders of the packs, two old Alphas, have chosen to unite their packs into one strong, driving force...

The Marsh Stone Union.

- middle banner here -

Swamp Song and Mountain Breeze are the first born children to the alphas of each pack. It was a simple call really; the two would wed and combine their packs lines, forming a pack grander than before. Are the two wolves happy about it? Not particularly, however they are duty bound and proud to unite their packs. What is a loveless life when compared to one of war and famine?

Both were readily prepared and a date set for their first meeting. The meeting was stiff, loveless and borderline unwelcoming. Between their stoic personalities and the guards who had tagged along to watch for any funny business, it could hardly be considered a success. In the end, they simply discussed their future with a flat level of disinterest, and left knowing that they felt only neutrality towards the other.

The wedding would need to go off regardless of their feelings though, and with this in mind, the two wolves continue to try and find common ground. Both Mountain and Swamp sent a crow back and forth with messages; mostly talks of the weather, the landscape and the herd they fight over. If one were to ask the crow, he would simply call it unromantic and cold, and although both are clearly trying, it is stiff and almost grudging. Neither are very happy with the fact that they are being forced to mate with the other. Thankfully, they are nothing if not stubborn, and the chance to unite the packs is not one that either is willing to ignore.

Mountain Breeze is the gruffer of the two, though his reasons for it are kept secret from all... for now. Little does anyone know, but the scowling, grumpy male had his eye on a pretty little thing in his pack before this marriage business came up, and now he must deal with not only letting that prospect go, but settling with a gal who is a little too much like him for comfort. Silently pining as he is, he’s likely to snap at everyone - especially his bride to be.

Swamp Song, of course, has noticed Mountain’s distraction from their marriage plans. Being nothing if not perceptive, she is not one to allow her mate to drift like he is. Deciding to take matters into her own paws, she recently left her packs lands with a single guard. Her hope is to surprise Mountain and be with his pack, understand their culture and find some acceptance.

Sooner or later, these two will have to come to terms with their future, and only time will tell if it ends up a happy one....

Uniting the Packs - the Marsh Stone Union!

- insert territory image here -

Territory
The packs lands are expansive; a portion of a mountain ridge, forest, meadow and marshy wetlands making up the bulk of the territory. The weather is generally warmer on their end of the mountain, though it can get colder up towards the mountainside.

Prior to the union, the Evergreen Fangs held dominion over the mountain ridge, while the Mud Runners' land consisted of the wetlands. A mixture of a meadow and a forest lies between the two.

The King's Shadow
The King's Shadow is a herd of elk that live within the pack's territory, led by a large, towering piebald elk named King. This is the main food source for the pack, and as such, they have an agreement with the Evergreen Fangs to only hunt what is needed.

Unfortunately, the Mud Runners don't have that reservation, and there will be fighting amongst themselves while they settle.

Other Animals
    Prey
They also feast on turkey, hares and the occasional unlucky squirrel.

    Predators
Of course, with such a large expanse of land, there are other predators living within it. Bears and mountain lions are up on the mountains, and while they generally leave them alone, the wolves know not to play with fire.

Leadership
Led by an alpha pair. Leadership falls through bloodline, with the sons/daughters of the alphas taking up the mantle of leader when their parents step down.

Betas & Omegas
Betas are the second in command. There will always be two Betas (one from the Mud Runners and one from the Evergreen Fangs) to keep things equal.

Omegas are the lowest on the totem pole, but still considered important to the pride. They are the primary pup sitters when the pack is out hunting, and the ones in charge of keeping things peaceful and friendly.

Breeding / Mating
Generally speaking, both packs held the stance that marriage and pups between wolves is something to be cherished. As such, flings are less likely but not explicitly discouraged. It's more common to find mated couples than to see multiple flings everywhere.

About the Mud Runners
The wolves in the marshes....

History
The Mud Runners have always lived within the marshes. Well versed in both swimming and deep forest hunting, they have come to see this place as the only place for them. Why would they need more than that?

But then the elk herd they hunted, so plentiful and rich in meat, began to migrate outside their lands. Confused, the Alpha sent a hunting party to investigate why, and discovered that there was another pack on the other side of the meadows beside their forest, one that for whatever reason, the elk were choosing to move towards. Why they would want to do so, the wolves had no idea.

In the end though, it didn't really matter to them "why". What did matter was that they were now competing for food. Fights began to break out between the packs, and after a very bad fight, the old Alphas of both packs chose to meet. It was time to end this hostility.

And thus the beginnings of the union were started.

Culture
Living in a wetter terrain, the Mud Runners do all they can to survive, their lands are not always plentiful and at times, they must hunt in the small section of woods nearby or feed on the aquatic life to survive. Few high calorie meals meant that when the prized Elk herd was near there would be a feast. Spring and Summer massacres would become the norm where the entire pack would hunt down as many elk as they could before they could run. These were the months of gluttony and joy; eat, breed and drop weight by the end of Winter all to start the cycle once more. To the Mud Runners, it is all about survival and the bond gained by simply living without restrictions.

In times of food shortage, a breeding stall would be set in place and soon the pack decided that unless bonded, one simply would not mate. Flings were out of the question unless done so by the Alpha. This group needed strength to prevail - and the sickly or weak of body are not tolerated.

Mud Runners do not have ties with others animals as they think they are superior. To befriend a hare, a crow or any such creature is considered foolish. Why make friends with your food?

Other than the simple ways of life, the Mud Runners do enjoy sparring amongst one another during the summer months and singing during the winter. The cold is normally what kills the pack, leaving many with an aching heart. It is during these times that the pack is closest to one another and where their hymns are born.

About the Evergreen Fangs
The wolves by the mountains....

History
The Evergreens first came to live upon the mountains after branching off from a nearby pack; said pack was diminishing in size, with wolves constantly at each other's throats, and unwilling to live that way any longer, a few broke off and fled to the mountainside. Here, they grew, they flourished, and above all else, they came to love nature and all it's gifts. Coming from a place where wolves fought each other for food, they learned to cherish it, to respect it, and as such, hold a certain revere towards it.

And then came the Mud Runners.

Their neighbor had, up to this point, left them largely alone with the forest and meadows separating the two. However, with the movement of the elk, they too tried to cross into the Evergreen's lands - and were met with hostility. After all, these wolves were clearly just hunting for the sake of food, and had the gall to leave the remains for any creature to find. How distasteful!

The two packs would clash every chance they got, but it all came to a head when a particularly heated fight broke out. No one was really sure who started it, nor did the Alpha really care. All he knew was that this needed to stop.

As it stood, the Mud Runners' Alpha felt the same about this situation. The two old wolves met then and declared that the two packs would combine to create a strong pack, one that could stand against invaders and keep the bloodshed from happening within it.

Culture
While not strict, the Evergreen Fangs function with a code of conduct. Food is something to be honored and not wasted, and as such, they have developed a relationship with the King's Shadow. The pack will not take more than what they need from their herd, and will otherwise leave the herd alone. Young calf are also out of the question.

In addition to this, they respect creatures of flight, forming bonds with them to deliver messages and scout for trouble, and, to ensure that no meat goes to waste, they will call on them to finish picking off the carcasses of their kills and/or bury them. They will not leave the dead to rot, both out of respect and to prevent worse predators from arriving.

Pups are a boon in the eyes of the pack, and although it's preferred that the parents are a mated couple, they won't discourage flings. That said, it will be frowned upon if both parents are not involved in their pup's raising, so it's far more common to see a mated couple than otherwise.

Important Wolves of this Pack
    Mountain Breeze
His bulk and brooding appearance makes this future Alpha an intimidating wolf to come across. He is the son of the previous Evergreen Alpha, and as such, is duty bound to unite the packs by marrying Swamp Song. That said, he has been snappy and gruff to everyone of late, and generally just wants to be left alone at the moment. With the union fast approaching though, he is pushing forward despite his reservations.

How Things Will Change
Because things are bound to clash when two packs come together....

Elk Hunting
The general stance is to use the alliance with the elk that the Evergreen Fangs already have in place. That said, there will be conflicts happening over this issue. While the mountain wolves will generally only hunt one or two elk at a time and won't do more until it's gone, the marsh wolves are used to having less food... and less reason to monitor how they hunt and dispose of their kill.

Omegas
Omegas have always been the lowest rank, but with the changes to the pack(s), the Alphas have decided to give them another job - keep the peace, encourage working together, make things more lighthearted. There are some that will sneer at the idea, but the packs' Betas won't be allowing them to act out against it.

Dens
While they won't be forcing everyone to move out immediately, the union will be seeking out a central place to stick the packs' dens. At the moment, it's looking like the edge of the meadows and forest may be the best place, but few have taken the initiative to move there.
