xxxX The OutbreakxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxspaceIn early Spring 2019, a news report aired.
space“Police were shocked when, arriving at the scene of a 911 call, they found the victim passed out, his arm almost chewed off, and his attacker laying nearby, dead from a gunshot to the head and several to the torso. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. He has yet to come to. Doctors are uncertain if he will survive the attack and doubt if he will be in any condition to explain the events that transpired if he ever comes to.”
spaceThe story was given little attention after that. Not many people bothered to think on it beyond shaking their heads and offering generic mutters of how violent society was getting and a few prayers for the victim. It got a singular follow-up on the news station, announcing that they victim had died two days later, having never woken up. The next day, however, another story broke, saying that an unknown assailant had, at some point in the night, broken into the hospital and attacked two doctors working in the morgue, along with several nurses and patients. No information was given on the nature of the attacks, and after the initial report, it was never mentioned again. After a couple of days, the story was, like the one before it, all but forgotten.
spaceThose stories weren’t the only ones. Stories of more attacks were being passed around, mostly by word of mouth. Few gave them any heed, thinking they were just rumors, possibly exaggerated tales meant to scare or provoke. Some described the attackers as street thugs, some as crazy homeless people. A few went as far as calling them monsters. The only thing that matched from story to story was the method of attack; according to the various sources, the attackers were attempting, almost singularly, to bite their victims.
spaceWhat nobody mentioned was the fact that each successful bite landed the victim in the hospital.
spaceWhat nobody noticed was that each of these victims died soon after being admitted, from an infection.
spaceWhat nobody would admit was that each of the attackers had previously been a victim.
spaceOne who’d died.
spaceBarely two weeks after the initial news story, all hell broke loose. With the incidents being largely ignored, few people were aware of just how widespread the attacks were until it was too late. The cities were overrun, and people had no way of knowing what was truly going on. No one knew that the attackers were dead. No one knew the only way to truly kill them was to destroy the brain.
spaceNo one knew that once you were bit, you were done.
spaceAnd because no one knew, it was only a matter of time before there were more dead than living. Society collapsed. People panicked. More died. More reanimated. Until there was nothing left to do but survive.

xxxX The UndeadxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxspaceThe Infection’s primary method of spreading is by bite. If the skin breaks, you’ve been Infected.
spaceOnce bitten, the Infected will begin showing signs of illness within an hour, starting with a slight fever and chills. Between six and twelve hours later, depending on their constitution, they will be bedridden. They will enter a coma between twelve and twenty-four hours after Infection. No more than two days after the initial Infection, they will die. After that, their body will Reanimate anywhere from one hour to a day later. The longer the Infection takes to kill them, the longer it will take to Reanimate.
spaceThe Undead do not show signs of higher thinking. They are attracted by sounds and movement, no matter how commonly these occur (a large Herd can be found surrounding a church whose bells still toll every day at the same time, even if they have been distracted away from it in the meantime). They often seem to move as a community, but this is only because each single Undead has been drawn by the same Trigger, or noticed the movement of their fellows and been attracted to the movement.
spaceThe Undead feel no pain and know no fear, meaning they are not deterred by anything, including fire. Rather, it will draw their attention. So, do not attempt to kill the Undead by setting it on fire. Fire takes a long time to burn someone, and in the meantime, you have to deal with flaming Undead, which makes them more dangerous to you.
spaceThe only way to kill the Undead is by destroying the brain. Any method will work, but some are obviously easier than others. Shooting the Undead is much more convenient than trying to incinerate their brain.
This section will be updated as the roleplay progresses and the characters learn more about the outbreak

xxxX The SettingxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxspaceTexas, Summer 2019 - Various groups living or stranded in and around the DFW Metroplex during the outbreak are taking advantage of the proximity to large cities and/or the isolation of the small towns and countryside to survive. Resources are plenty, but so are the undead. Every attempt to secure a new stronghold or to acquire more supplies is high risk due to the high population of newly reanimated undead.
spaceCurrent Weather - Average temperature in the high nineties, mostly sunny with heavy summer storms rolling in about once a week. High humidity.
