The soft pitter patter of wolf feet was the only audible sound as wolf and crow companion traversed through the dead leaves and cold terrain. Wind Dancer sat huddled along his wolf's back, eyeing everything with suspicion and curiosity mixed together. Kindle, on the other hand, had a twinkle in her eye as she stopped on occasion to sniff at the ground here and there. She'd caught an interesting scent earlier and tried to follow it, but so far nothing. She hadn't been able to place the scent either, which had only drawn her in to the hunt more.

Pausing in their explorations, Kindle eyed something on the ground, pawing at it to unearth it. It looked shiny.... Alas, it only turned out to be a frozen rock that glittered when the sun hit it. She sighed, nudged it out of the way, and went back on the prowl. Surely there had to be something here today!

At least in her experience so far, the Redwoods always seemed to toss something interesting her way if she only stuck her nose around its business long enough.

User ImageThe air was cold and still, even as the sun tried to warm it through the thin, bare branches of the Redwood. No matter how many times he had passed through the lonely decay, Shallow Marsh found the area unfamiliar and alive. The lithe male moved slowly on his path, pausing every few measured steps to scan the gaps in the trees, clouds of hot breath rising from his maw as he panted. He hadn’t yet encountered another, not even an interesting stick or a measly scrap of food. Nothing. He shook out his fur, as if to dispel the annoyance and the chill, and lifted his nose, taking in the smell of frozen rot.

Red eyes narrowed and dark ears snapped forward suddenly. Not nothing… Marsh’s back stiffened and his tail raised, and he looked behind him and back again. He was approaching the base of a narrow gully, where a large tree trunk had fallen and lay suspended overhead, branches slightly obscuring a sort of tunnel along the path. The natural bridge didn’t look particularly sturdy - in fact, the wood was likely brittle and unable to carry any significant weight. The gully’s bed, long since dried, was littered with smooth river stones and mulched leaves. He could hear the faint steps of another and the new scent grew slightly stronger, beckoning.

Marsh paused just beneath the trunk, hoping he was at least slightly obscured by the dappled light of its broken branches and the shadows of the small ravine. Perhaps he could get the jump on whatever would cross his path...

The crow sitting atop her back seemed to become more alert. He didn't see anything, but there was something that set his feathers off. An instinct perhaps? Wind Dancer wasn't sure, but he started paying more attention, shifting his weight from foot to foot, always gentle with his talons. He lightly pecked at Kindle's ruff, to attempt to get her attention. Fat lot of good it did.

Just as quickly as the first unsuccessful shiny object had drawn her attention, another one drew her like a moth to flame. She pounced at it, trapping it between her paws and almost sending the crow on her back tumbling to the ground. With and indignant squawk, he managed to stay put.

"Kindle. There is something here." Wind Dancer stated in dry tones.

"Oh! Oh really? Where? I don't see anything? Was there something shiny you saw? Ooooh or more crows? Maybe something even better?!" She had stumbled right up to the gully, oblivious to anything unusual - or rather, more unusual - in her surroundings. There was the usual dead or dying trees. The rough ground with all its sad little crumbled leaves. The chill that never seemed to leave the air.

Her ears were standing as tall as they would, flicking this way and that, trying to find what Wind Dancer had sensed with her tail lazily wagging. And then, because this was silly and there was an easier way to handle this...

"HELLOOOO?! ANYONE HERE?!" There! Easy fix to the problem at hand.

Distracted by straining to pick up on the nearing conversation, Marsh flinched at the sudden yelling, hackles standing on end and a brief, low growl slipping past his maw. For all his stalking about, she had gotten the jump on him… he mused, calming somewhat as he recognized the excited words of a younger lady. He took a few long strides from the shadows, tail raised somewhat, head swiveling about until he caught a glimpse of Kindle from the mouth of the gully.

“Sadly no, just me…,” a grin and a chuckle lay behind his words, and he padded closer to the fiery-colored shewolf, nose twitching as he took in her scent, and that of the raven’s. Dark ears pressed forward and he tilted his head to admire her. In all his journeys through the wood, he had never known one so eager to give their position away. He supposed this may be more common with younger wolves, or perhaps those with the nearby protection of a pack…

It seemed the game was afoot in the Redwoods today. Shallow Marsh liked games.

At least one of the two was properly on guard as the sound of a strangers voice rumbled to them, making the raven's feathers fluff out as he narrowed his gaze on the emerging wolf. While not an overly large creature, he had learned that talons and beak could be useful weapons.

Kindle on the other hand....

"Just you? But that is okay! You are exciting and new and hello. How are you? Have you been here long? Or seen anything unusual? Oh, my name is Kindle. Do you have a pack here?!" It was clear that the female wolf didn't find the male a threat and was greatly interested in whatever he could tell her. Such was her curse.

"Kindle, you must give others a chance to respond to one question at a time." The raven sighed, settling himself more comfortably along her back once more. His gaze never wavered from the other wolf.

"Oh. Right. I'm sorry. Let me try again! Please?" She danced forward, and closer, a little. "Hi there." There! That was more polite, right?
