Okay, so, maybe that wasn't the smartest idea. Probably about as not-smart as trying to keep Sandrine from being corrupted (which, he decided, he should visit them soon). But it was pretty close to that same level of actively working against the Negaverse, and for what? It didn't fix anything. Probably didn't teach anything either. And it just wasted a whole bunch of time that he could've been spending on the people that matter, like Xenotime or Sylvite or basically anyone who was nice to him that was also still alive. Everything that happened was just… Living in the past, he guessed.

Okay. Right. Current stuff. Ochre drew a steady breath. Sylvite was a captain now, and had been for a bit. She would've been assigned an office by now, and maybe even decorated it too. Did she have subordinates yet? He should definitely check in. It's been a while since he congratulated her, and he got so wrapped up in his own stuff that he hadn't really stopped to think that maybe she needed help with something, or she could use a gentle nudge in some direction or another. She looked like she was doing really well on her own. But couldn't he help her do even better?

Time for a visit to find out. He was already halfway there, basically. Xenotime's office was his office, and the generals weren't all that far from the captains. Just a few hallways, a set of stairs, and he'd be there. She might not be around, but if she isn't he could always leave her a note or something. That'd be kinda fun — giving and receiving little notes in their respective offices as a way to keep each other informed. But Ochre couldn't really write what life's been like on a few Post-Its without taking some risks, so maybe Sylvite couldn't either. He'd just visit the office, then. Down the steps, around the corner, count the numbers. With his tablet up, he could check her file and actually find out which office was hers.

Then he knocked, three times. "Sylvite?" He called, just to be doubly sure before he opened the door.

When Ochre knocked, there was about a second of silence, and then a bright, if slightly confused, “Yeah?”

When he opened the door, he would find her office. It was small, ‘cause she was a pretty fresh Captain, with just a desk pressed up against the wall, but it was still way more than what she’d had or what she’d been expecting, and she kinda loved it. Unfortunately on a teenager’s budget she couldn’t do much about the dark stone walls, but she did have a string of those star shaped fairy lights hung up, and a string of diy pompom thingies. Right above the desk she had a gallery wall of printed out pictures, a mix of selfies with friends, fun pictures, and a couple quotes that suggested the girl had been spending way too much time on Pinterest.

The desk itself was a much less organized mess of paper and pastel highlighters, which Sylvite had been using on pretty much every boring, black and white, military font piece of Negaverse paperwork that she could get her hands on. She’d also brought down a mini alpaca plushie for the desk corner.

Sylvite swiveled around when she heard the knock, crossing her arms on the backrest of her chair so she could see the door. She grinned big when she saw who it was. “Oh, hi Ochre!”

Ochre wasn't sure what kind of office he'd walk into, but this one looked way more personable than any office he'd ever seen before in his life. And that included the offices he sometimes walked into when he had to meet with someone for an hour, and offices where job interviews happened, and even doctor's offices. There were a lot of different offices out there, he decided, but none really said as much about the person in them as Sylvite's did. And he was happy for that — it felt like he was finally getting to know his first recruit without really having to ask anything — and he wondered, too, if the other people in the photos were other officers or if they were friends she was maybe planning on bringing into the fold.

But Ochre had a habit of stopping and looking around instead of saying something, or rambling for too long, so he made an effort to catch himself this time. In what he felt was a punctual save, he remembered to look back at his recruit and flash her a warm smile. "Your office looks really great. Are you having fun decorating it?" It looked so; some of the stuff even looked handmade. Ochre never thought to do anything like this before.

Sylvite, he decided, was super creative. She'd go really far even without his help. Ochre approached, braids whispering across the floor, then leaned against the edge of her desk with a light thump. There wasn't anywhere else to sit just yet, but that was okay; Ochre could put out the money for a few chairs and maybe some office-warming gifts. She looked like she could use a plant in here with a grow light, or maybe a terrarium or something. Lights seemed like they did okay as long as they were in Negaspace, anyway. Any closer to the Rift and it'd be a huge problem.

But the plant business would have to wait. "I just wanted to pop in and see how you were doing," he explained with the shrug of one shoulder and a wave of the hand. "Just seems like a good idea, you know? I mean, being a Captain is probably a lot of work, and I remember being Super being a lot of work too, so I wanted to make sure you didn't feel like you had to do everything totally alone." Even though —

"And uh, I wanted your opinion if I could have it. And this is gonna sound super strange, but uh… Just hypothetically, if you knew someone hurt someone you were friends with, and you knew you worked with them, what would you do about it?" He looked up at those photos on the wall. What if someone starseeded one of those people? What would she do?

Sylvite didn't mind Ochre staring at her stuff. Like, she'd spent a couple hours making pompoms and printing out pictures and stuff, and yeah, it was mostly because having a cute office made her happy, but it was also a little bit because she wanted to look professional and like she put effort into her space and stuff. So if anyone else was gonna approve of her office, she wanted it to be Ochre.

Which pretty much left her beaming at the compliment. "Oh, thanks! Yeah, my room's pretty small, so it's really nice to have, like, my own desk? I almost feel like an adult, but in a good way," she said. Even though she'd been eighteen for awhile now, she'd just been hit with the news that she was probably going to be staying at home into college, since dorms cost money and all. There was still a little time to try to figure that out, but in the meantime, having a fancy desk covered in paperwork was kinda a nice feeling.

"It's always good to see you! I have been pretty busy," she started, but that train of thought got cut off right away when he started asking for advice.

He was asking for advice that was both oddly specific and yet just vague enough that Sylvite couldn't guess the details, which made it sound like there was some kind of incredibly juicy drama going on. She didn't like that it was drama that was leaving Ochre in a bad mood, though.

"That sounds like it would suck," she said, looking over towards him. Then she chewed on her lip for a few seconds. "It kinda depends on the situation. Sometimes you just have to suck it up so your team can go on. Then, sometimes you can try to get them back, or like, at least tell someone in charge what's going on."

She shuffled her papers around to make a clear spot and then lifted herself onto the desk, where she sat cross-legged, nodding towards the chair if Ochre wanted it. "Why? What's going on?"
