Soleiyu was restless; unlike simple boredom, a strange, tingling sensation had been affecting his heart and stomach.

Something was missing. Something was wrong.

All things before a few days ago seemed like a strange blur; he had glimpses of things, parts of a story that almost made sense. A critical thinker, he was missing the pieces of the puzzle he needed to fit everything together, to explain what was going on.

He'd traveled by day, by night. The city was large and overwhelming, but he persisted.

He was looking for something, needed to find something...

Someone.

It was both easier and harder when the sun went down; he could pinpoint energy signatures and feel out who was where, but he didn't need to know the whole story to know that it was dangerous. He avoided the dark spots on his radar and, while he sought out some of the more noticeable, friendlier specs, he hadn't really caught up with anyone.

Everyone was moving so fast, leaving him behind.

He simply couldn't stand for it.

Tonight, instead of chasing down the signatures, he settled down right right by the fountain; he sat, statuesque sans the twitching tail behind him, as he watched the world around him. He didn't have much of a presence but he'd been biding his energy. As soon as someone got close enough, he was going to strike.

He wouldn't let them get away this time, not before giving him some answers.

...Or even, a warm meal.

Kari was on a patrol alone for once. She had still been avoiding senshi life, but now that Loren was on the white moon side of things...she figured that she should start pushing herself to be out more...even though she still had a slight fear of the dark and those who lurked within it.

Tonight wasn’t going to be a long patrol, or so she told herself. Just something quick. A sweep of the area and then back home for a nice cup of soup and perhaps a sandwich.

When she passed the fountain, she felt the cat before she saw him, but when she saw him, she was quick to move closer, her eyes taking in the miles and miles of white fluff, and the cute little glasses perched on his nose.

He was on her side of the war, not a chaos tinged cat and this fact alone is what emboldened Kari to move closer. “Hey...is um. Is this seat taken?” She gestured to the spot on the fountain next to where he sat and smiled slightly. “You’re the most beautiful cat I think I’ve ever seen, and that’s not...even a brag, I don’t think.”

She moved closer and hesitated. “I’m Sailor Kari, and I hope that you actually are one of the Guardian Cats because if you’re not, thank goodness that you can’t understand me and I’ll just walk away before anyone else sees me looking like an idiot.”

Soleiyu's tail twitched slowly, languidly; he glanced at her as she approached but in typical fashion, slowly looked away as if bored.

He wasn't, though; his interest had been piqued. He was playing smug, but truthfully he was flattered. He liked being told that he was the most beautiful, for more reasons than just vanity. There was a strong pounding in the back of his head, memories and purpose and things he couldn't quite grasp.

He was here, but he didn't know why, or what was going on.

Pride prevented him from revealing any weaknesses, but a few seconds after Kari spoke he turned to look at her again.

"How many are there? That you know of."

There were others like him. He wasn't alone.

It was a small step towards finding answers. His tail twitched again, betraying his curiosity despite the ambivalent persona he'd donned.

For a long moment, Kari was glad she hadn’t just sat down, as the cat seemed to be no more than a normal cat, and she was just about to walk away when he spoke.

“Oh!”

He was a guardian cat after all. The senshi sat down next to him and smiled brightly. “How many what? Senshi like me, or guardian cats like you? I’ve met a couple. But you are without a doubt the most fluffy, and the most beautiful, if you don’t mind me saying.”

Sitting on the bench beside the large cat, she reached out and stroked his fur, pleased when it was indeed as soft as it looked. “Oh, and you’re the softest by a long shot. What silky fur! Whoever takes care of you must do it very well indeed.”

Now that she thought about it…a cat might be a good addition to the family, if she could convince Loren to get one with her…Something soft and purring on their chests would…be a nice way to unwind.

The cat raised a brow, clearly pleased with her proclamation that he was the most beautiful. He seemed a bit smug, clearly basking in this praise. If he'd been a lesser cat, he might have started purring right then and there.

His tail twitched as she pet him though he gave no indication that he was doing anything but enjoying the attention. "I take care of myself," he answered, fighting back the urge to allow the rumble in his chest to become an audible sound.

He looked up at her again, this time through half lidded eyes and from behind his little half moon glasses. "What are the other Mauvians like?"

It wasn't that he didn't care about the Senshi; on the contrary, he had a great need, a longing, to seek them out. But right now, he felt strangely alone. It wasn't a thought he could compress into a few single words, a simple emotion. He wasn't just lonely, he felt isolated, ungrounded, lost.

He didn't know if finding another Mauvian would help, but there was immediate solace in the fact that he wasn't the only one on this planet. He could relax, even if just a bit.

They were out there, somewhere.

Apparently with other Senshi, too.

“I can tell that you take care of yourself, oh, I would love to take care of you too, you know. I could just imagine how nice it would be to brush out your fur. You deserve to be groomed properly.” Not that he didn’t get groomed properly, Kari was sure but…

“What are the others like? They were nice. The one who got me into this was very cute…and the um. The one that I ended up…on a date with…kind of looked like you, a little I guess. He was white and had glasses as well, but you, you are much more fluffy and a lot larger.

And this cat…looked as though he’d make a wonderful pillow…or a good foot warmer.

Quietly, Kari began to scratch lightly behind his ear. “I have a lot of senshi friends too. And knights. If you’d want, I can take you to come meet them all. I don’t think they know any guardian cats, though I could be wrong. We’re a pretty big group.”

She relaxed, a smile forming on her face. “I’m really lucky to be a part of them.”

Brush out his fur? Be groomed properly? Soleiyu's tail twitched eagerly but he remained sitting poised and reserved. He purred, a low roar in his chest, and leaned into her scratches as he silently commanded more.

"I suppose," he mused, as if he was actually deliberating it. Truthfully, he had nowhere better to be. Or, anywhere, actually. And being with someone who wanted to groom him, to scratch behind his ear, to introduce him...

He couldn't quite complain about that.

"I am looking for someone," he announced. "Though I cannot remember their name or face. But I have a calling, and I must find them. You are the first person who has been so friendly with me. So, I like you. I will go with you."

It wasn't entirely a question; he had made up his mind. Even if she hadn't offered to take him to meet them he had already had full intentions to follow her home at that point. This was far more socially respectable, though. She'd opened the door for him and he intended to follow through.

“Well…I know a few people…and I know that the people I know also know others…eventually I’m sure we’ll be able to find who you’re looking for.” Kari’s voice was earnest and she played with one of his fluffy ears while she watched him. “I’ll make sure you’re taken care of, you know. I promise. I don’t think…anyone has any guardian cats in my group, or if they do…they haven’t let me meet them. Evan has a dog though, and he’s super cute…I don’t think that he’ll bother you though.”

Maxim wasn’t a problem to anyone. He was the sweetest dog.

“I’ll help you find who you’re looking for…though, since you’re coming home with me…would you mind telling me your name? If you don’t…I’m sure I can just call you Mr. Fluff God or something like that but…it would be easier…if we could be friends. Then I can introduce you to everyone.”

The brunette smiled softly. “You’re safe with me. I promise. Even if I’m not quite that strong yet. You’re safe with me. With all of us.”

"Well," the Mauvian said, drawing out the word, "You could call me that." His tail swished, but he announced only a few seconds later, "My name is Solieyu."

He leaned into her gentle touches, demanding more attention to the ear she was petting. "I will go home with you. You will help me find whoever it is I'm looking for. And if need be, I will just make you stronger. But I do not judge strength on power alone. I trust that you have many other qualities. Kindness, for example."

He moved closer, into her lap.

"...It will be easier if you carry me," he announced, both out of practicality and because he was enjoying the attention she was giving his ears.

“Solieyu? That’s an interesting name.” It was easy to wrap her arms around him when he climbed into her lap, and she went so far as to press her face into his long, luxurious fur. “I would be honored to carry you…and if you ever see fit to make me stronger, I would be most grateful.”

Quietly Kari snuggled closer, continuing to massage his ears, her fingers digging lightly into his fur. “I want to help protect my friends. I’m tired of being someone who needs to be protected…I’ve been weak for so long…I’m tired of not having the strength that I need to do what I need to do.”

There was a veiled bitterness in her voice. “I’m afraid that…I don’t know. That I’ll be a liability. I’ve…those on the other side know that I’m weak anyway. So…”
Her fingers continued to pet him lightly. “If one day you think I’m ready. I would be so happy.”

He purred, pleased with her careful massaging. His eyes closed and he pushed himself closer. His chest rumbled and his tail twitched pleasantly.

"The strength that you need to do what you need to do," he repeated and seemed to take a few extra seconds to consider her words. "What is it that you 'need' to do?"

He wasn't criticizing, he was curious--and calculating. "Because, I've found that people seem to think they know what they want only to find that when they've gotten it, nothing changes. It's not the power you have. It's what you do with it."

He pressed closer, and though his eyes were closed, his ears twitched; he was listening closely, waiting patiently for her answer.

“I just want to be strong enough so that I can stand on my own. Right now I always seem to be hiding behind Lysithea or Malus, or any of the others and…” Kari shrugged. “I don’t want to have to hide anymore. I want to stand firm and protect my boyfriend. He…he was pretty recently pulled over to our side…he was with the Negaverse and…I guess we’ve been wary of going out what with his reputation and my own…we just…”

She shook her head. “But what if there are others who are tempted by chaos? By…by stupid kisses and sweet words?” She buried her face against the cat once again, shuddering at the memories she had worked so hard to repress. “…What if being just a little stronger meant that I could save someone…or a lot of someones? If I could be stronger, I could beat back more chaos. I could fight better. I could…I could just do more Solieyu. I could be the hero that…I think I’ve been trying to be this whole time.”

It sounded stupid, even to her own ears and after a moment, Kari just shook head. “And now I’m just whining. One of these days…I’m going to get myself under control. It’s a goal of mine.”

Soleiyu's tail twitched and he looked up at her. "That's a good goal. But I don't know why you're so hard on yourself."

He took the opportunity to nudge her chin with his forehead.

"You need practice and training. You need to be kind to yourself. Look at your role models, your friends, and what you respect about them, and use it to guide your path. I'll help you set up a training regiment. You can show me what you're capable of and I'll help get you into shape. You need to know that there will always be those tempted by chaos, by darkness. It's the way of the world. When someone promises us everything we dream of, sometimes we are weak enough not to ask 'at what cost'."

He looked up at her, watching her closely. "But do not think of the 'what ifs'. There are too many possibilities. Statistically? There are infinite 'ifs'. Think not of the possibilities of things going wrong--think of the path you need to take to make things go right. What if, you trying your best, meant you were out the night someone needed you? Super Senshi, Eternal Senshi. Civilian. It doesn't matter how much power you have. It matters how much you care. There are more ways to fight the chaos than with just fists and magic."

He nuzzled her again. "Though, such things helps. But do not forget the importance of being who they need. Who you are is every bit as important as what power you have. So, take the time to cultivate your power. To grow into who you want to be. And," he was purring loudly now, "Know that I will help you. I am very wise. I give very good advice."

“It’s much easier to be hard on myself than to not be hard on myself…” Kari murmured, a little amused, though a little sadly. “And it’s just habit by now. Oh, here comes Sailor Kari. What a loser.” Or…that was how it had been. Now…not so much. Still a little, though she kept those feelings mostly to herself.

“I’d like that, Soleiyu. That would be very nice. I’ll get stronger and become a better senshi, and you won’t have to be alone…so it’s a win win, I think…” She looked away as he spoke of those tempted by chaos and sighed. “Yes…but…there will always be the brightest among the senshi to offer their hands and talk of another way. I…I’m part of a group like that now…and it’s nice.”

Kari grew quiet again, listening to all he had to say and after a moment she just chuckled, enjoying his purrs. “Well…thank you. You do seem very wise. And…I’ll listen to your advice…even though to me it seems like you are giving me much too much credit for things that…I feel I don’t deserve.”

Leaning down slightly, Kari kissed him on his nose. “But I do want to get stronger. I want to be the best me. And I hope that you can help.”

Soleiyu blinked at the kiss, perhaps surprised by it. He wasn't one to get flustered, but he huffed, as if he were too good for kisses. And, yet, there was still the low, unavoidable rumble of a purr deep in his chest.

"I will help you. But the first step is to stop thinking you are not as 'good' as anyone, and to trust me when I give you credit. It's my job to be aware of such things, you know. It's in my blood, to see what others cannot see. We Mauvian are not like others. I can feel your starseed."

His tail twitched pleasantly as he remained in her arms. "And your starseed cannot lie. Your mind can, your heart can, but not your starseed. And it is pure and good, and so are you. I will help you see that, Kari. I will help you see how bright your starseed shines. I wouldn't go home with a loser." He nudged under her chin again, bopping the top of his head to it. "I know I am looking for someone. And I know you will help me find them. And," he promised, "I know that you will thrive. We will be a good team."
