Caleb liked these trips to the mountains. They were so soothing and utterly relaxing after the hustle and bustle of the city life, and he was grateful to his parents for buying the cabin for himself and Benji. It made it so much easier to get away now that they didn’t have to make reservations and wait their turn for this place.
He rested his arms on the porch railing and looked out over the trees, giving a soft sigh. The spring wind moved across his face and felt wonderful, and now the only thing that was missing was his boyfriend’s arms wrapped around him but…that would come soon, he was sure.
“Hey, Benji? Can you come here for a sec? It’s beautiful. Same as every other day but still. This sunrise is amazing.”
And he had a few things he wanted to ask the boy. Important things.
…Life…changing things.
He hoped that he wouldn’t be scolded for trying to move too fast but…well. He’d cope if that happened. He was good at coping.
Besides. If things went badly, they could just go out for breakfast and Caleb could eat his troubles away. That was the best way to deal with unpleasant things after all.

"Ngh... No, I don't wanna come over..." the lump on the bed groaned, curling up a little tighter to his lover in the early morning hours. Benji rather liked sleep, especially when Caleb became handsy at night and left him exhausted at times. For all the s**t talk he threw, Benji was surprisingly low in stamina on certain days.
Yesterday wasn't exactly that, but the bed was too nice, too warm to want to move.
To imagine having been so happy... That was amazing in itself. Time felt like it moved so quickly since when they met, their first moment of tears together, the pizza, the pain, the solidarity... The kiss... Even with the war around them back in the city, Benji could hardly imagine having been in such pain as he had been only a few years before.
That Benji had been buried away deep inside of him, locked away and hidden under layers upon layers of genuine affection give to him by that dumbass cutie on the porch was simply demanding him to get out of bed.
Not today, you sweet, wonderful b*****d.
"Mm... Why don't you come over here and wake me up properly, hmmm...?"

With a soft snort, Caleb shook his head and walked back over to the bed, sitting on the edge and running his fingers through the soft white hair of his partner. “Neither of us can see the sunrise from over here, but I suppose I’d rather see your face.”
Bending down, the brunette planted a not so chaste kiss on Benji’s lips and grinned after pulling away. “So. If that was your idea of a proper wake up, then hurry and get your butt out of bed, I need to talk to you about something a little important.”
Perhaps a bit more than a little important but…
Slowly, the male got off of the bed and turned his attention back to the porch. “I think that you should like what I have to say though. I hope you do. If you don’t well.”
He shrugged, hand searching idly for Benji’s.

"I guess it's cheese for breakfast, hmm?" The kiss was more than well received, Benji allowed himself to be consumed by it, feeling every part of his body tingle with bliss as he pulled away with a soft sigh.
"Fine.. I suppose I can get up..." He liked to whine, for certain, but he did do what was asked of him, slipping out of the bed and into a robe that was left out on the chair. The spring air was nice, but still brisk, and he never was one that delt with the cold easily.
While before, hearing Caleb say such cryptic things would unnerve him, with time he came to understand how his partner worked. He liked to make mountains out of molehills, fighting internally with himself over decisions that Benji generally had an immediate answer for without too much thought. Maybe back in the beginning, it was a struggle, but with time he had just allowed himself to follow his partner's lead.
Life seemed so much happier that way, rather than fighting with himself over and over again about his own self worth.
"Come on then, let's go, so you can talk, then we can go back inside. I don't wanna get hangry too soon on such a nice morning." Of course, he teased, walking around to the other side of the bed and grabbing that hand that had been searching for him, pulling it to his lips for a brief kiss.

“It’s not cheese for breakfast, I thought we’d go to that diner that’s down the road. I’m in the mood for their waffles.”
He was pleased that Benji had actually gotten up and the kiss had left him feeling more than a little giddy.
As he drew the other male back to the porch, he rested against the railing once more, watching as the sun began to creep up over the mountains, tingeing all of the trees and the sky a bright reddish orange. It was breathtaking. After getting his fill of the sight he pulled a small box out of his pocket and slid it across the railing towards where Benji stood, looking a little amused, and not showing any of his apprehension except by the bit of worry in his eyes.
“I’ve been thinking about how much I love you, and I don’t know. I think maybe. You should wear this ring I got, and if not consider us to be engaged, but think of it as a promise that I want to marry you at some point in the perhaps not too distant future. The way I see it…we’re in a war. Things could happen at any point and I know…you know that I’ve almost killed someone so…that could easily happen to me, and if it does…well.”
He shrugged and rested his head on the arm that was still leaning on the railing. “At least I’ll know that you will be taken care of.”
All practical. This had to sound like a practical step. A logical one and not just the fact that he desperately wanted to wear a ring on his finger and see a matching one on Benjis.
Even though that was most of the truth.

Despite the whining from earlier, Benji was more than fine going outside to watch the sun bathe the land around them that lovely bright color. It was so incredibly different than Destiny City. There, it felt like the sunlight was a marker for peace, where the battles and pain of the night would fall quiet until the sun set once again. Here, in the mountains, so far from that chaos, both the sunrise and the sunset were just... Quiet.
Peaceful. Moments that blended into one another without that fear of being hurt or hunted for any given reason.
Part of Benji thought that Caleb was going to ask about moving out here permanently. While it was a wonderful idea, he knew it just wasn’t possible right now. They were both still in school, and had no means to simply pay to exist and lay about here. Well, Benji didn’t, Caleb was kinda loaded and spoiled, but that didn’t mean Benji wanted to just mooch forever.
He wanted it to be mutual, both of them taking care of one another. They weren’t at that point yet.
Sleep was still trying to take him over, and at some point Benji allowed his eyes to close, only opening up when he heard something sliding towards him.
A box. A ring box.
... What?
Unable to respond anything immediately, his face was stony, expression looking more pissed than anything else, though that was just how it always was. And when Caleb finally stopped talking, Benji swallowed, then looked back out at the trees. He just couldn’t look directly at Caleb now. Not when his face was still crusty with sleep, and his face still struggling with what emotion he wanted to settle on.
“... I guess that makes a lot of sense.” Finally speaking up, he picked up the box and cracked it open, almost afraid to take a full look at it.
“We’re really young for this, you know that right? And you’re right, we’re in this war.. I could lose you any day, and just as easily, I could be killed too...” The ring was pulled out of the box, and held between his fingers as if inspecting it. And slowly, the realization of it all was getting to him, his face starting to quickly redden.
“Are you.. Um... Are you really sure about this...? I’m definitely kinda a s**t-show of a person.. And I can’t even prep for anything that would help you if I died... I-I mean, you’re right, it really does make sense but, dude, I’m just nothing special. Maybe you should save this for when you meet someone better than me... T-That’s not a no! I promise, it’s not a not I just... You could do better... I know you can!”

“Are we really that young? We’ve been fighting for years…obviously we’re old enough to almost kill people, why shouldn’t we be old enough to get married. Yeah. I’m sure about it. If you get killed…I—“ He broke off, far too much emotion rising in him to continue the train of thought. “If…you get killed. At least we’ll have…I’ll have…well. I can’t think of that right now. I’ll have known you died loved and happy outside of the whole damn war.”
Caleb’s voice sounded bitter, and there was a clear edge to it that he hoped could be understood.
“Though, I won’t ever let you die, Benji. I’d do anything to prevent it. And yes. I’m sure about this. I’ve put a lot of thought into it…and I love you and I don’t give a damn if I could do better. To me…” He crossed the space between the two of them and pressed a kiss to the other male’s lips.
“…To me there is nobody better. You’re the one I waited my whole life for, I think. I love you. And I want to marry you. We can still be partners though. No fancy titles. We don’t have to be husbands if you don’t want to be. Look. It’s for…it’s just…”
He broke off and finally shrugged. “******** it. It’s more than just convenient. I love you, damnit. So marry me. Please?”

Old enough to almost kill, or old enough to have killed in Benji’s case. So much had happened in the nearly 5 years he had been active in this war...
Every word Caleb spoke had a point. What reason did he even have to say no except his own hesitation?
He had few friends, lost some, made some, lost them again. Even his family had been left behind more than a year ago, the abuse growing too great. Those he had loved before had slowly slipped from his mind, leaving him to focus on the future ahead of him. One that always seemed to include Caleb, no matter what scenario played out in his mind.
“You do know your life is pretty damned short so far. Saying you waited your whole life for this is a little weird, but.. I feel you, I guess.” He only wished he had that same unwavering certainty that his partner had, to look him in the eye and just say with such earnestly that he wanted to be married. The very thought of it never crossed Benji’s mind.
“I feel like with the way things are going, who knows how much time we have left so.. ******** it, sure, let’s get married.” That redness in his face only grew brighter as he closed the ring box with a snap and tossed it back at Caleb, only to hold out his hand shyly in the next moment.
“... It’s weird putting it on myself, so... You do it. You want this, right so go on, put it on my finger.” For emphasis, he gave the nubby little ring finger of his a wiggle. Only the first joint was missing, plenty of room for a ring to remain on securely.

Caleb waited, letting Benji work through everything and still hoping for a good outcome. He had been proud of himself for only really letting emotions be a factor at the end of his plea, though when the male finally relented, he smiled. At least until the ring box was slid back towards him, though the reasoning for that just made the smile reappear, twice as bright.
“As you wish, partner.” The brunette muttered softly, opening the box and removing the ring. It wasn’t too fancy, just a white gold band, with a row of small chocolate diamonds decorating it. He figured that Benji had to have chocolate diamonds. It would be nothing short of a crime to rob him of that.
He didn’t get on his knee, though the romantic side of him still wanted to, though he slid the ring on carefully, and then kissed it lightly, enjoying how it sparkled in the morning sunlight. “Well. I did pretty good with that, if I do say so myself. And I do. I hope you don’t mind the color…the stones didn’t look nearly as nice in yellow gold…”
Hopefully though, that wouldn’t be an issue.
Reaching out, Caleb pulled the male towards him and gave him another, lingering kiss. “…Thank you for being my partner. I couldn’t ask for anyone better than you, Benji.”

This all seemed far too unreal for Benji.
Who the hell would have wanted him? Was Caleb even in his right mind? But there he went, placing that ring on his finger, kissing, kissing him and making it seem like this was that big of a deal.
What would have changed between them anyway? They lived together, fought together, cried, ate, patrolled, everything was done together. The only thing that would have been that big of a deal would be the title.
Husband. It felt gross to say, or to think about... A title too formal for what they had, but the feeling was there behind it. Maybe he could suggest "Perma-partners", but... Nah, he wouldn't ruin this for Caleb right now.
And what could he say, Benji was happy too. The ring was beautiful, the chocolate diamonds were corny, but the little thought made him feel all the more happy..
"It's perfect, Caleb... Mmm... No more sappy stuff." The teasing came naturally, arms coming up to wrap around his now 'fiance's' shoulders and pull him down for a proper kiss after the first one was received.
"I need you to make this morning even better..." He would have winked here, if he could, but the press of his hips a little closer should have been enough. His Caleb wasn't all that dense. "And then breakfast... Then maybe go shopping for your own ring.... How does that sound?"

Caleb smiled brightly and watched Benji for a long moment, keeping the kiss going for as long as he dared to. The invitation to go back to bed was one that he really couldn’t refuse and so he nodded, laughing and slipping his fingers between those of his fiancé. “Yeah.” He said softly, nipping the male’s ear.
“That sounds like the best way to handle today, I think. And I am more than ready for all of it.” Leading Benji back to the bed, Caleb drew the male into his arms and nuzzled against his neck, sighing in contentment.
He would remember this day for as long as he lived.
He was sure of that. After all.
This was the beginning of their happily ever after.
