DREAM JOB To take over her grandma's fortune telling shop

xxxPERSONALITYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

WHIMSICAL Moira is the type of person that prefers to play to the beat of her own drum, so to speak. She can sometimes be unpredictable in her actions, often making her choices simply by how she’s feeling on a particular day. She also has been said to have a flare for dramatics.

INSIGHTFUL People-watching has always been a beloved pastime for Moira. She’s always been interested in the psychology of human behavior and as such, she has learned to get a pretty decent read on people and their emotional wellbeing through their speech mannerisms and body language. A useful skill for problem-solving, but mostly she likes to just play guessing games with others and watch their expressions when she manages to guess what they’re feeling accurately enough to strike a nerve. As a seer she is fully aware she will never know everything, but it’s fun when she can fool people into thinking she might.

MORBID Moira’s classmates in primary school often avoided her due to her fascination with the macabre. Having been raised in a funeral home, she finds a certain beauty in death just as one would with life. Why is dying such a big deal, anyway? It’s all part of the great cycle. It probably didn’t help her case that she was so fond of the tarot and spiders, either. She was quick to gain a reputation as “creepy” amongst her peers, which was perfectly fine with her--if judging her was what made them feel better about their dull little lives, so be it.

IMPISH Like her birth mother, Moira has been known to have a hell of a malicious streak. She enjoys toying with people and sometimes likes to cause trouble just to see what happens. If she feels she's been betrayed, she will set out to get even.

MANIPULATIVE Moira likes to get her way, one way or another. She’s not above resorting to trickery to get want she wants. Although she prefers to maintain a reputation for honesty and refuses to resort to blatant lies, she doesn’t see a problem with twisting the truth a little if it means she can get someone to do something for her benefit.

POISED A calm and collected sort, Moira takes pride in having a strong hold over her emotions. She was brought up by her mother to maintain a ladylike disposition--to be polite, dignified, and confident in her actions. As a child she of course has moments where her emotions get the best of her, but she makes a point to keep those moments of weakness private and behind closed doors.

xxxBACKSTORYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

EARLY CHILDHOOD Moira Payne (Born Moira King) was the aftermath of a rocky relationship between muggle Emily King and half-blood squib Conall Drake. The two had met working together in weddings (she a planner and he a caterer) and while they had initially hit it off in a whirlwind romance, Emily’s erratic behavior turned out to be too much for Conall to handle. Out of spite, Emily hadn’t informed Conall of his daughter until she was nearly walking. Once he knew, he demanded a relationship with his daughter and it was all downhill from there in custody battles. In the end Emily had won the case and Conall was given only a few hours of supervised visits a month.

Moira’s time with her mother was filled with either eerie silence or fierce discipline. Emily hadn’t the patience or desire to properly care for a child, leaving much of her frustrations vented at her daughter for throwing her life off the path she’d wanted. Yet, despite those feelings, she was selfish and hadn’t wanted to give her only daughter away to who would have been a loving father. Emily only became more frustrated at the strange behaviors exhibited by Moira as a child. She would often take her daughter’s toys or sippy cup away and set them out of reach, only to turn around and find Moira had miraculously gotten a hold of them yet again. Although Emily couldn’t explain the phenomenon, Conall had managed to catch Moira in the act during one of his visits and realized she was a witch like his father before him. Once again the custody battle commenced as Conall felt Moira would be in better hands with him than Emily, who would no doubt react negatively to Moira’s magic once she caught on. Moira’s mother managed to win again.

Shortly after Moira turned 4, her father tried to take her away. Her relationship with the man had been much better than with Emily--Moira loved her daddy, he was funny and much kinder than mummy--so it hadn’t been a difficult task. However, the police had managed to get a hold of them before they even managed to flee from York, and back to square one it was… Except this time was even worse, as Emily put out a restraining order and told Moira she wouldn’t be seeing her father again. Moira, upset by the news, threw a tantrum that sent her stuffed animals flying and scared her mother senseless. After a phone call with Conall, Emily was finally filled in on Moira’s magical lineage. Conall begged her to let him help, to which she replied by promptly hanging up.

Moira recalled just a few more of those calls over the months: questions about what was considered ‘normal’, yelling, the slamming of phones, and then a long time-out in her room. It all came to a head on June 23, 2039 when her dad had come for her once and for all. Emily ordered Moira to hide in the closet while she dialed the police as Conall--who sounded rather off to Moira--beat on the front door and yelled obscenities at Emily, demanding he be given his daughter. He sounded angry. Moira, with a gnawing feeling in her stomach, warned her mother to hide with her or he would hurt her. Emily responded by telling her to be quiet before slamming the closet door. The following minutes had been loud and seemed to take forever to Moira: Connal made it inside. There was yelling, screaming, sounds of glasses breaking. Moira silently obeyed her mother and watched as much as she could from behind the door slats. Eventually, Moira heard sirens. Panic from her father, then a loud bang. And another. Her mother collapsed on the ground, and Moira could just barely make out the color red seeping into the carpet. It wasn’t until years later that Moira had been fully informed that her father had shot her mother in a drunken rage, and then himself upon the arrival of the police. She was orphaned.

A brief period of time was spent at Wool’s Orphanage, where Moira had become acquainted with fellow orphans. By the following Winter she was adopted by a kind couple: Theopolis Payne, a halfblood and former Ravenclaw, and Aveline Payne (Nee Dupont), a french muggleborn witch from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, co-owners of Payne Funeral Home and & Mortuary in Winchester, England. As it turned out, Moira’s new adoptive grandmother was also a seer and had been keen to take her under her wing.

Although she’d never had much in the way of friends--the local children thought her living situation and morbid comments were positively creepy--Moira adored her new life as a Payne, often finding herself spending time among the graves and ghosts that resided in their cemetery. There was an instance early on that Moira had managed to get herself trapped in a casket for a night while exploring the funeral home--she doesn't like to talk about it. At school she managed to acquaint herself with a wizard boy in her class, Nimbus Siddall, who seemed just about as alienated as she was--something about a rumor she hadn’t cared to learn. They weren’t exactly friends, but more-so companions who sat together at lunch and vented their grievances against the muggles in their grade. He didn’t seem to mind that she would often sneak her pet tarantula to school, so that was a plus.

When she wasn’t at home, Moira often found herself at her grandmother Ursula’s fortune telling shop in the slums of Winchester. There were shady characters about, absolutely, but Moira very much enjoyed the stories they had to tell and her grandmother was quite the character. It was during one of her visits, not long after she received her Hogwarts acceptance letter, that she encountered another wizard boy her age named Wren. The two hit it off and he managed to take a place as Moira’s favorite source of company.

It was during one of her visits that she encountered a boy her age named Wren. The two hit it off and he managed to take a place as Moira’s favorite source of company.

SCHOOL YEARS
FIRST YEAR Moira found that she quite liked attending a magical institution. It was certainly more entertaining than muggle school. Finally, she would be in the same classes as her dear friend Wren, and even her former classmate Nimbus was joining. However, much to her surprise, the only people she had to call friends happened to have a rather bitter history. She loved the drama.

For the most part, Moira kept to herself. It seemed she was still a little on the creepier side even for a hoard of wizard kids. She didn't mind her roommates. As the year progressed, she found herself spending more time with Aspen Hill in particular—mostly out of association, since she too seemed to have befriended the utter disasters that were Wren and Nimbus.

She liked to spend time in the Astronomy Tower when the class was empty. The views of the stars were spectacular, and it was a pleasant spot to meditate and reconnect with the astral plane. It was there, on a cold Winter's night during a meteor shower, that Moira met one Sheldon "Eion" Delacroix. He was a rather strange boy, but that suited her just fine. She was, after all, a rather strange girl herself. They talked for a while, and he even let her tell him his fortune.

It was over Winter break that her parents told her she had a baby sibling on the way. Moira had been adopted because her parents had a difficult time conceiving, and had been trying for years. Though it would have been understandable for her to be apprehensive about her status as an adopted child, Moira wasn't worried in the least. Her mother and father reassured her how much she was loved, and she was looking forward to have a little brother or sister to guide. When she wasn't with her grandmother or visiting with Wren that Summer, she spent much of it keeping an eye on her mother. After all, her mother was bringing life into the world! Moira wanted to be as helpful as she could.

SECOND YEAR Moira realized it was unreasonable to hope her mother would have the baby premature, but she couldn't help it. It was a complete tragedy that she wasn't able to be home for the birth, but at least this year she was permitted to bring her very best friend, Rosie the Tarantula, to Hogwarts with her. Her dorm mates did not much approve, but Moira didn't care one bit. Rosie was just as much a person as any of them and deserved respect. How could Aspen even think to be threatened, anyway? Rosie wore a flower for goddess' sake. As obsessed with plants she was, she should love her.

There was a girl in her house the year above her, Rhea Lane. Moira detested her. She was much too happy for her liking, and had a sickening infatuation with Wren's cousin August, who... Moira may have also been infatuated with. But at least she had the class to be subtle about it. Rhea was all over him, clinging stubbornly like a little shadow, all the while pretending like she cared about Moira and insisting on keeping an eye out for her. Needless kindness like that would get her no where in the world, and Moira thought it best to teach her that lesson herself, building one small insecurity at a time.

She further bonded with Eion, to the point she might consider him a friend. He also seemed to be spending more time with her little group of friends, as did Yukon Knolle.

Uriel grew so quickly. He was but a tiny thing over Christmas, barely able to keep his head up, but by the Summer he was crawling and taking his first steps. There may have been an incident where Moira and Wren were supposed to be watching Uriel, and he crawled into an open grave. Thank the stars, he somehow wasn't hurt, and Nimbus and Eion happened to be passing by to come to the rescue... And fall in themselves. It was quite entertaining.

THIRD YEAR The worst happened: Wren's horrible, evil cat, Dunce, ate her beloved Rosie. How could she? After all the treats, all those chin scratches, and this is how she repays her kindness? Wren was hardly comforting. Moira couldn't remember the last time she had cried. It was Eion that found her, and helped her to feel better. Moira advocated for Dunce's execution ever since.

Tensions were rising with Rhea Lane, and Nimbus, kind-hearted as could be despite that rough exterior, was firmly not on Moira's side. He wanted her to do better—some friend he was. At least Wren enjoyed her intervening.
Speaking of Wren and Nim, this bitter rivalry of theirs was starting to grow stale, and neither one of them would fess up what the problem was. It was getting to be a hassle. Something had to give eventually, didn't it?

FOURTH YEAR It was during the Winchester's annual Christmas party that Moira had her first prophecy. She was sitting with Aria Siddall and little Uriel one moment, and then the next, flashes of a grim future flew before her eyes. A story of bloodshed, of darkness, of fire, of unity. It felt like only seconds. It felt like an eternity. Her sense of self was gone, as if she were possessed, and whatever words she spoke did not belong to her. Whatever was said, she didn't recall once she came to... But Aria did. She'd never seen such a grave expression on that innocent face before.
Moira wondered endlessly what her prophecy meant, but she came up with nothing. Outside of Aria, and Uriel who was unlikely to remember, the only person she discussed the matter with was her grandmother.

Meanwhile, into the next semester, Wren and Nimbus finally buried the hatchet. They went from aggravating to nauseating in a span of weeks. Was this best friendship? Moira certainly didn't cling to Wren like that. Would he have even let her? Maybe. It must have been a childhood friends sort of thing.

FIFTH YEAR Moira decided she didn't like secrets. Her friend had been suffering for years, and she was none the wiser until he returned to school with bandages around his throat, from an attempt at his life. And yet, while temporarily mute, Nimbus Siddall was the happiest she had ever seen him. Even Wren seemed happier, having found love with their resident rain cloud. Teasing them was fun. Meanwhile, Moira had grown close to Eion, and was developing feelings of her own. She wasn't sure how to approach it. It wasn't like she was the nicest person... Maybe Sparrow would have some helpful advice for her?

SIXTH YEAR Everyone in her friend group seemed to be paired up. Aspen and Reggie, Yukon and Aria, Wren and Nimbus, and even Eion and herself. The first semester was peaceful, but the second... Moira was more than a little worried about some of her friends. It turned out she was right to be concerned.

At the beginning of August, Moira watched the life leave from Aria Siddall's eyes. She had been with Wren and Yukon at the Winchester Estate next door when there was a loud crash and cut to the power. By the time they made it over, the ceiling had come down in the Siddall's estate. Everett Siddall lay on the ground, a pool of blood from his head that had been gruesomely blown half off. There was an arm sticking out at the bottom of some rubble, which they discovered later to be Sera Carver. None of this phased her. What did, was the sight of Aria Siddall, sobbing over her brother as she stubbornly performed compressions, shoving the steel bar that had impaled her deeper and deeper through her abdomen. Nimbus was caked in blood—it was impossible to tell what was his and what was Everett's, and he had no pulse. Still, Aria begged Wren to save him. While Wren tended to Nimbus, Moira called for help, and Aria said her final goodbyes to Yukon, freshly her fiance, knowing full-well she had pushed herself beyond her limits. Moira cushioned her head on her lap as Yukon held her hands like a lifeline. The group lost their angel that day, but Nimbus survived by the skin of his teeth. For some reason, the whole ordeal gave Moira an odd sense of deja vu.

SEVENTH YEAR started off a disaster, the wounds of grief still fresh in their chests. Yukon and Sparrow took to drinking, entirely too much. Nimbus was quiet, and had to be kept from his dormitory often, lest they never see him. As for the rest of them, they were just trying to keep everyone together, each grieving in their own ways. In February, Moira performed a pagan ritual for Aria's birthday. If she were being honest, she wasn't sure that it would do any good, but it seemed to bring a sense of somber peace for most of them. With time, everyone began to drift back together, forever scarred, but their bonds stronger.

POST-GRADUATION Immediately following graduation came the heated family debate of Moira's future business endeavors. Of course, there was never any question that Moira was a born business woman. The issue lied in her loyalties: Theo and Aveline hoped that Moira would choose to take over the funeral home, while Ursula wanted to train her to run the fortune shop. Personally, Moira hoped to leave the mortuary to Uriel one day, and stick with toying with muggles for a living. But she was young and capable, so for now, why not both? She could multitask. Besides, it wasn't like she was running two businesses by her lonesome.

Life was fine for a while, but eventually, tragedy struck again: This time with the Winchesters. Moira could hardly believe it. One day she was having tea with Wren's mother, and the next? Burnt to a crisp, and Moira collecting the bodies. Yet again, that horrible feeling of deja vu. Moira realized too little too late it was her prophecy fulfilled. Shortly after was a meeting between the Payne Seers. Ursula consoled her, telling her there was nothing that she could have done. Uriel, meanwhile, didn't believe it. She knew he wasn't blaming her, exactly—more-so arguing against the concept of fate itself—but it stung all the same, and she blamed herself. She wondered if Aria had understood it, back when it first began. In any case, there was nothing more to do than be there for her friends, and aid Nimbus in his mission of keeping the remaining Winchesters from falling apart.

Not long after, as a sense of normalcy began to return, Grandmother Ursula decided to retire and travel the world again, leaving the entirety of Madame Ursula's Fortunes & Tarot in the hands of Moira. Though significantly sooner than she ever imagined, it was a dream come true. She wanted nothing more than to follow her grandmother's footsteps! There was still the mortuary, of course, but she was confident she could handle things just fine. She had the undying support of her family, after all.

It was in said shop, their lovely little home, that dearest Eion proposed to her with the help of all of her friends. Of course she said yes. The love of her life and a found family that cared for her so? She was truly, deeply blessed. She would do anything to protect them. Which was why, when Eion's mother and abuser came back into their lives, with a sweet little sister that resembled her love so much? Well. Now that she's seen his face, she couldn't in good conscience allow him to live. Roaches, unlike spiders, were best left squashed. What better way than a little poison?

Did she regret it? Yes. Not because the threat was permanently removed, but because she was frightened of what she was capable of. What would those she love think of her, to know she'd gone so far? It wasn't like Nimbus, who had killed in self-defense. No, Moira's crimes were premeditated, down to the cremation of evidence in her family's mortuary. Bad timing left her found out by some of her friends, but the secret was well-kept. If Eion ever suspected, he never asked her about it.
