Location: Alice's Tea House

Suri made a new rule for herself: she had to leave the hotel at least once, even on days when she wasn't assigned to a mission. It didn't have to be with others, and it didn't have to be for long, but she needed to get out of her room suite and her head and just try to live for a few moments.

The Tea House became a popular haunt for the woman, who was slowly working her way through the variety of options the quaint little storefront had to offer. Sometimes she would bring paperwork, other times just a book, but today she sat at an empty table, staring out at cobblestone streets while she absently stirred at her cup.

She should reach out to Maverick, contact him and assure him that she was still safe. But what did she say to a cat? No. A mauvian. How did she explain to him the world he'd been hidden from for a decade, how did she shield him from the dangers and the pain? She had chosen not to bring him to Witzend because she was concerned for the sort of treatment he might receive as an oddity so far from home, but now she had nothing to do but fret for his safety, wonder if her subordinates could really care for him the way he deserved to be cared for. Suri pursed her lips, resting her chin on the palm of her hand, letting her tea grow cold. It was a burden too heavy to carry on her own, but one she could share with no one else, because no one else understood.

So then...what? Think until her mind went numb? Based on the growing headache behind her eyes, she estimated she was about halfway there already.

Messaging Silk had been easier for the woman because she made sure to check in her guardian in fear that he'd be tearing the house apart with his sudden freedom. Every single member of the pack was out on the mission, so it meant Silk was the man of the house really.

Well cat of the house. She had finished her call as she entered the tea house and looked around. While she found that information gathering would be point, she also noticed her superior officer looking a bit distraught then normal.

She came to take a seat, brushing her hair off the chair and eyeing her general co-captain.

"Afternoon Suri." She mused, her face ever unchanging and only did when she sipped the tea that was dropped off for her. A sweet mint with a dash of lemon. "Care to spill the tea, as they say?" It was hard to tell if Regan was joking or not with her face as serious.

The phrase was picked up from Prissy.

Suri's gaze remained distant when Regan sat, but there were other ways she acknowledged the girl's company--she paused her movement mid-stir, her lips pursed, her eyebrows wrinkled. "Good afternoon, Regan," Suri greeted in kind, dry and flavorless--she bore no ill will to this member of Chase's assembled pack, though she still found herself at odds with trying to connect with someone who was likewise so quiet, so unable to emote.

Suri preferred it that way, she thought: she kept to her own business, and Regan kept to her own business, and they never discussed her performance at the tourney they'd entered in jointly on Labyrinthite's behalf. Adamantine had at least cleared the first round. Zircon tried not to dwell on her own performance. But here Regan was, being nosy or concillatory or lonely, Suri couldn't tell.

Her gaze flickered over to the other girl, one eyebrow raised. "Nobody I know says that," Suri responded, though it did remind her to actually scoop her own cup into her hands, the feeling of warmth vaguely touching her fingers. "I'm afraid I'm not hip to whatever's in these days--but I'd prefer not to spill anything, if it's all the same." She had to focus, to keep her hands from shaking, to drink the blend she'd chosen from scratch. It was already too cool. Pity.

"How are you adjusting to Witzend?" Suri asked, before they were consumed by the silence between them. It was best to be cordial, if for no other reason than to avoid a reprimand.

Suri was a different type of person to read. Where Prissy and Silk made up for her lack of emotions, Suri didn't do anything of the sort. It made Regan actually feel more comfortable with long silences between them.

Even if the feeling wasn't mutual from Suri.

"I suppose it means to share what gossip you have heard, since our time here in Witzend is meant to gather as much intelligence as possible." She paused, "But more specifically, I suppose, I was asking about what had you seem so pensive as you sat here."

Regan watched Suri drink and then cocked her head.

"It's a town." She muttered, "I am not comfortable without the garage, to be frank." She had no safe spot here, or her constant companion in Silk to soothe her anxiety. "And admittedly, I miss Silk more then I thought." She waited.

"Maverick is being taken care of by your lieutenant though, isn't he?" She had brought the cat up because well, very few things made Suri happy but Maverick was one of them. Perhaps talking of her cat would perk the woman from her mood.

Suri was never quite sure what to make of Chase's little stardust girl. No one survived the ranks of the Negaverse without accepting some mote of cruelty and savagery into their person, but Regan was endlessly composed, steady yet fragile, like Suri could just breathe on her to make her crumble. Years ago, she might have tried it, but she'd seen some of Adamantine's performance in the ring, trusted Labyrinthite's training, knew better. Still, it was a stretch to say that Suri felt a sense of camaraderie for her fellow packmate, who was more like Prissy than herself. A senshi, like the one she'd made of Queenie when she thought of having a lieutenant for herself.

Regan was making the effort, at least, being chatty for her demeanor. Maybe it was Suri refusing to extend the olive branch. She frowned, it was so tiresome to be in the wrong.

"Nothing of note--as I understand it, there were no surviving members of the branch," she replied, lacking the usual sharpness to her voice. Suri spent more time looking at her cup than her teammate, though she glanced up when called out on her behavior. When she heard Maverick's name, she winced.

"Two of my assistants, yes," she answered, rubbing her forehead. "He usually stays at the Ellis Ranch when I'm away, but there have been..." For a moment, Suri fought with herself, trying to put words to the difficult feeling constricting her throat.

"Maverick was brought into the fold," she said finally, reaching for her tea with a bitter expression. There was no point in beating around the bush. "He was recovering from the process when I left. He's...one of ours now. Like Silk and Theodore."

She was careful to watch Suri, without making it seem like she was watching the woman. She knew of the generals dislike for corrupt senshi, and it made no better that she was part of a team that was primarily of senshi. She would continue as per usual, to keep a safe distance from Laby and Zircon, but respectful enough for both of their ranks.

After all, even after she proved time and time to Laby or Zircon of her loyalty, she was no closer to earning their full trust. That was just fact.

The wince made her stop playing with her cup, and focus a bit more on the words Suri said. Her face turned bitter at the mention of Maverick becoming powered and Regan tapped the handle of her cup.

"I see." There was a silence that followed and she turned her head away, thinking carefully how much she wanted to prod at it. The woman was obviously tense over her precious cat becoming a guardian and she didn't know if she could blame her. Maverick was a sense of normalcy for Suri....Now he was powered...

"It worries you." She brought the cup back up, "Do you fear for his safety with him being a guardian?" Guardians were more valuable to senshi then they were to generals....but Suri loved her cat. "Would you like me to message Silk and ask him to check in on him as well?"

There was still a part of Suri that wanted to snap at Regan, because of course she was worried about her cat, of course she worried for his safety when she was thousands of miles away and unable to protect him from the new reality he'd been suddenly made a part of. However, this was but a small flicker of emotion in a swath of exhaustion, and so she did nothing at first but sigh, setting the spoon in her cup on the dish to dry.

"I like to keep my priorities separate," she explained instead, her hands pressed tightly against the cup as if that might help her feel its warmth. "My home life stays at home. My work stays at work. It's tidier that way." She knew Chase liked to keep his things where he could see them, with his house and his company and the way he liked to train, but Suri had always kept herself at arm's length, distant but to her preference. Anyone who got too close felt like a burden, like someone crowding in. "Maverick being...what he is changes all of that."

"I participate in the war because it was something I chose for myself," she frowned, looking down. "But Maverick never had that choice. Once he awakened, it was enlist or die. That's not an option. That's extortion." She exhaled, shaking her head. "That won't be necessary. I'm sure he'll be fine. But...I couldn't bring him here--the other branches kill them before they have a chance to take root in their communities. That we have them at all is an anomaly." The same could be said of senshi like Regan, but she let that statement hang in the air between them.

"But I also can't pretend that he won't be used for the war efforts while I'm away...it's a complicated situation." Suri knitted her hands in front of her mouth. "Too many variables." Her gaze went distant while she thought, cloudy and tired.

Regan thought of the choice she had been allowed to make when Chase had found out that he couldn't corrupt her as a lieutenant. He had offered her power, and she in return, became something he now he hated. No...not hated, but had stronger primal instincts to destroy. Though she chose to corrupt, she didn't get to choose what she corrupted into. It was hard not to feel a little bitter about it.

She couldn't blame Suri's apprehension of her personal life mixing with business but the sheer...confidence that her home life would not be effected by her work life was pretentious. Regan didn't voice it, but there was something to be said that the woman would think so confidently that negaverse would allow that separation. If not Maverick...something else would've bled into that life.

Though her tone didn't change, nor her face, when she did speak, part of it was amused. "You don't like surprises do you?" She didn't drum her fingers on the table, but instead on her thigh as she thought best how to proceed. "I'm going to speak frankly Suri, Had he not been corrupted to the negaverse as he was, he would've been killed. You have said that before. Though he didn't get to choose this, would you prefer your guardian cat to have gone to order? Had he made the choice?" She rose an eyebrow, "He is now allowed the opportunity to learn under not only your tutelage, but as well as your umbrella of prestige and safety." She idly moved her fingers up.

"Are you going to reject him then? To keep your boundaries?" Regan didn't see it as variables at all. It was simply what it was. Maverick was negaverse and such, he would be subject to all the negaverse did. "Guardian cats are highly valued in our area, I have no doubt having one will allow you a little more..." She tried to think of how the uppers would think, "I suppose it allows you more utility in the job and I find Silk's presence with me to be comforting as well. He's been a very wonderful guardian for the negaverse." Maverick could too, she was sure.

...Was that a teasing tone in Regan's voice?

Suri glowered, sinking into her cup and away from Regan. She wasn't about to be the punchline in somebody else's joke. "What I would have preferred is for Maverick to be a cat, not some talking...alien...thing," she hissed, keeping her voice low to dissuade eavesdroppers, pulling her gaze back to the cup in hand. "He was normal. He wasn't Order, he wasn't working against us in the war, he was a cat."

She breathed out, leaned against the back of her chair while she composed herself. Regan would only see her outbursts as unbecoming of a general, and she couldn't afford another low commendation. She had to keep her mind sharp, keep to herself. Say only what needed to be said, nothing more. The Negaverse was not an institution to lean on for support.

"Rejecting him won't change what he is," Suri admitted, bitter and seething. "But...being under my charge will not protect him. If anything, it puts a target on his back. If I..." She paused, considered, then shook her head. "I'm not interested in the utility he provides. I just want him to be safe and unafraid."

She thought of little panicked gasps in a cage, of soft pleads, and closed her eyes, brows furrowing. "It's good that Silk provides you comfort," she conceded, willing to talk about anything other than the memory of a citrus star fading to black. She tried to think of something complementary to say. "He...performs as expected, on command."
