Quote:
Trying anything on, it's a boutique after all there has to be something, end up leaving you in a very sarcastic or mischievous mood. You're either shooting back with killer zingers or you're trying to see what kind of havoc you can create. It doesn't matter if it's not your usual type of nature, you're almost dying to cause a scene.

Suri felt herself falling into a haze of paperwork and tedium. She didn't leave her hotel suite except to meet with officers and complete reports, taking her meals alone or in a conference call. It brought her no joy to go outside, to catch up on her reading, to listen to comforting music, but by day three of living in her pajamas she knew her behavior was leaning out of 'restorative' and into 'slacking'. With no energy to explain to Chase what she was or wasn't feeling, she pushed herself through her morning routine--brush teeth, shower, light make-up, ironing a blouse.

She stared down at the fabric of her shirt, conservative and grey, and frowned, thinking about what Queenie might say. It's spring-time, Miss Ellis, don't you want to wear something bright or floral? Suri felt grey, she always felt grey these days, and as considered the blouse she couldn't help but wonder if she was sabotaging herself. This time she thought about her mother, nothing you do will ever matter if you can't present yourself properly. And then she heard Trey's sly comments about age spots and wrinkles, and in a huff she shoved the blouse to one side, digging through her luggage for something more bold. She wasn't boring. She could present herself just fine.

Grey, grey, blue, black, white, grey. ...Was that it?

As a last resort, Suri threw on a white blouse instead, paired with her pearls, running her hands over her face. She needed something different in her life, something new. Shopping? Horrid without company, but Regan didn't seem the type, Trey would put her in something too dazzling, and Priscilla was a hard pass. If she wanted something done, she was going to have to do it herself.

Finishing off with her black slacks, she left the hotel with a bit of a wild hair in her bones, staggering off for one of the nearby boutiques. Once she arrived, she went straight to the womens business apparel on a mission, grabbing one blouse, then two and three. Red, purple, gold. One of the shells was pink with paw-prints on it: she snatched it and added it to her pile with a grim expression.

She was not boring. She was no fuddy-dud who sat in her room feeling sad for days. She refused.

London wouldn't say that she had been ignoring her duties, exactly, but she had been going about them in a way that was very true to her nature. She was never one to make a plan and approach her tasks with any form of organization; she was impulse incarnate and, in her opinion, she was most likely to get the most accurate information when she forced those around her to react to her unexpected behavior. Who would expect the delinquent to be a spy?

Of course, that could have all been an excuse to be a shitty tourist, too.

With a worn, camouflage jacket and a crop top, she hardly looked the sort of person that should have been shopping in the eclectic boutique. She was a little unfinished, a little too grungy with her messy bun, but she ignored the glances other patrons shot her when they thought her back was turned. Same song, different country.

Chipped fingernails trailed across the top of a desk that displayed all forms of interesting jewelry. It seemed hand crafted, all winding wires and crystals, peculiar pendants and silver work on delicate, too-long chains. She grasped the end of a fiery crystal delicately and turned it to examine the clean facets in the bit of light afforded by the overhead lamp - then grimaced as a small, round sticker showed her the price.

"Tch."

The redhead feigned a look of displeasure and reached up to pluck a feathered hat from the stand next to the desk; it wasn't at all her style when she settled it over her vibrant hair but that wasn't the point. In a second she had her phone out and was leaning forward on the desk to find a cute pose while she swiped to selfie mode. It flickered to life and she adjusted it, turning to see who was behind her in every direction even as she made stupid faces and smiled for an imaginary friend that would never see the photos. Her free hand closed on the crystal and her hip turned, letting her slide it easy and smooth into her oversized jacket pocket. It was her favorite coat for a reason.

Just as she was about to drop the phone, she saw a familiar face behind her - wasn't that one of the women that had been standing with Chase at the meeting? What was her name again? General something. General Zircus? Zenon? She clucked her tongue behind her teeth and dropped her phone, turning on a heel with a fake smile pulled across her lips. The feather in her hat bobbed against the air current.

"Oooh, are you here shopping too?" There was no reason to even talk to her but she felt the urge to do so regardless. Maybe the day was just too boring.

With five blouses in hand and none of them in neutrals, Suri felt like an absolute madwoman. There were no rules, she could wear what she wanted, and that realization was a strange blend of horrific and freeing, the mix of which settled over Suri with a bit of a wild hair. What did she need to be slumped about for? She was Zircon, a general of the Negaverse, hand-picked to deal with the senshi menace on a foreign battleground, and she had no time for frivolous things like being a sad sack over her personal life. She had faced direr straits--this was nothing.

At least, that's what she told herself, gearing up to find a dressing room. Her head swiveled, looking for someone who looked the part of 'unassuming boutique clerk' when her eyes settled on a woman in a feathered hat. A moment later, she realized she was even being addressed, which merited another look--one of the girls from the meeting at the hotel, Suri recalled. An officer, then, though Suri knew names better than faces and couldn't seem to place one on this girl.

"Just...browsing," Suri answered dryly--her first impulse was to stow away the arm holding the blouses, because many of them were simply too bright, but she kept her posture steady, staring between the girl and her choice in headgear. Between friends, she might admit that she liked the feather, but for now she kept that to herself.

"And you?" Suri looked the other woman down and up, cold but curious, like she was a puzzle to be solved. "I wasn't aware that Witzend had a derby--are you planning to dress up?" As long as she wasn't trying anything funny to distract Gansey, then they would get along just fine.

Was she... joking?

London rarely had a hard time getting a read on someone but face-to-face, staring the other woman down, she suddenly couldn't decide if she was serious or not. It was just a moment, a breath of a falter, and then she plastered a sweet smile back across her painted lips and reached up to touch the hat gingerly, as if she had forgotten it entirely.

"Oh, this?" The redhead plied the words with a well timed laugh. The hat was removed, a curious glance reserved for it, and then she turned to delicately place it back upon the hook she had grabbed it from. At least the woman hadn't noticed her pocketing the necklace. "It's not really my style, it just reminded me of all those silly hats they wore for the Prince's wedding. Sometimes I like to fancy that I'm more than just some silly American street rat."

When she turned back, she seemed more in control of herself, or at least more in control of her expressions. Instead, she focused on turning the conversation away from herself and back to this other woman that Chase seemed to hold in such high regard. That was when she noticed the blouses Suri was trying to hide behind herself and despite not knowing the other woman, she took a half step around her to get a better eye for what she was holding. Her tongue clucked behind her teeth and a curious glance raked her figure from head to toe. When it settled back on her face, the smile was too sweet.

"I don't really think gold is your color. It's a little too gaudy."

Suri couldn't bring herself to laugh along with the other woman--while extravagant, flashy perhaps, there was nothing to suggest that the hat was out of style. It wasn't silly, it looked like something her mother might have worn to derby, and her mother had a sense for such things...though perhaps not to the taste of American street rats, as it had been put.

She decided that she didn't care for the way she was being appraised, by the quick down-up judgement in the other woman's eyes, even if it was a sensation she was familiar with. At least in her slacks it was difficult to see the prosthetic, and she'd practiced standing straight enough time to fake it as long as she didn't have to walk. Her hands clenched around the hangers holding the blouses, and her lips pursed.

"Gold brings out my eyes," Suri responded, tilting up her nose. The particular blouse might not have been entirely to Suri's personal tastes at first, but now that the gauntlet had been thrown down she was sticking to her guns. This woman had no power to tell Suri what she could or couldn't wear, and was no authority on what counted on stylish. Still, she didn't know who was hiding under that vagabond, glamour being what it was, and the last thing Suri needed was to offend another general when she was supposed to be on her best behavior. So she pursed her lips and kept the vitriol to herself instead of pondering how this was the most she'd felt about anything in days.

"But what would you suggest?" she quipped back, offering the invitation for an opinion since the boundary had already been crossed. Suri could set an example. She could take the high road here.

A neat, thin brow rose as the woman became a taut line of clenched muscles. Some women, like herself, loved to shop (even if it was with a five-finger discount) and others treated it like a battlefield that might overtake them if they let their guard down. Even if the other woman hadn't turned her nose up and stared down at her like that, London could have guessed which one she was. She shoved both hands into her jacket and slouched a little, hoping that it lent her an air of compliance; making an enemy with a General, even if she couldn't remember her name, was not on London's to-do list.

"Sure, the gold is nice against those brown eyes, but it washes out your hair and skin." The slouched shoulders rolled in a shrug and her eyes pointedly flitted from the pale blonde to her hands where they clutched the hangers so tightly. "That brown will pop just as nicely against say, a royal purple or a sky blue and both colors will be striking against this pale thing you've got going on."

London drew her hand out of her pocket and waved it at Suri's general paleness, though she failed to notice the necklace chain that came loose with the motion and hung half over the side of her army jacket's long pocket. She was aware her words were blunt and that it contradicted her suddenly amicable, submissive posture, but she couldn't help the brutal honesty that just rolled right off the tongue.

"But if you feel like rocking out in gold today then by all means, go right ahead."
