Drew was moving up the line of Job Fair presentations at Hillworth Gym. It was halfway through his senior year and he didn't have a clue what he wanted to do. Right now he was just going the motions. He really wanted to full blast into his Senshi Side... but his Civilian Side... well he couldn't do that just yet... besides, there was his family to be looking after too. He came upon the Destiny City Police Department Presentation. He quickly muttered, "You don't want me...." remembering the hell he put his family and the communities they'd lived in through, when Dria vanished. He remembered Granpa and gulped. He tried to pass the Police Department althogether without looking at the Officer once...

Destiny City Police Officers had their work cut out for them, and getting new recruits was harder than ever before. Gang wars, loose dogs, vandalism. Whatever they wanted to call it. Jeremy was aware of the cover ups, the lies. His brother was a Senshi, for better or worse, and the whole thing had opened up his eyes to a whole new world of problems.
They say 'Knowing's half the battle,' but Jeremy wanted to know what the hell the other half was, because he was out there without any clue what was going to tip the scales towards the side of good.
He didn't like that his brother was a Senshi. He didn't like that he was a vigilante.
He understood that there was a need to fight evil and all that, but no one hand handed him a magic pen and told him to get to work.
No, he'd gone to the Police Academy, taken his tests, gotten his certifications. They'd handed him a gun, and a badge, and set him loose.
And now, he was looking for the next generation of police officers. Real, certified purveyor's of justice, entrusted by the city to take care of its citizens.
He had noticed Drew, though it took him a good few seconds to recognize where he knew the boy from. The room was crowded with other displays, other career paths. The officer that had been assigned with Jeremy to run this booth was distracted talking to someone else but Jeremy squinted at the boy.
"Hey," he said, suddenly. "--Kid. I know you." He reached out to clap him on the shoulder. "Drew, right? --Hey! It's good to see you. How are you doing? And your sister--Dria?"

Drew's olive skin went a trace darker. Did the officer just call his name? Could it be one of the officer that knew him from juvie, or worse that had had hauled him off so many times, when he was youngrer, or worst of all, one that was there the night he originally snapped and... and Granpa ... Granpa .. He had to get out of here quick... Wait was that a note of kindness in the Officer's voice, a note that he recognized from recently, was that, could it be ? He looked up and sure enough.. "Officier Fischer," he said with a smile. "How good to see you!" Then, he noticed the officer with him - Officer Lou Barriger - the Officier who had wrestled Drew to the ground the night he snapped. Drew tensed. That was five years ago and he had be twelve years old, but the man was still of impressive size and the memory still freaked Drew. Hopefully, he wouldn't recognize him. Hopefully.

"Hey, kid," he greeted again, raising a hand in greeting. He raised a brow as Drew glanced at the officer with him, trying to figure out what that strange expression had been. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
It wasn't exactly a jab at the last time they'd seen each other, more of a slip of a tongue that he almost regretted after the phrase slipped his list. "--Ah, come on over here. What are you up to these days, everything all right?"
He didn't seem concerned about Lou, who was busy talking to someone else; Jeremy was a social creature and at the very least, he'd have liked to look busy. He was always a fairly easy going, friendly person, and even if Drew wasn't interested in joining the force, it was always good to catch up with someone you'd had, you know, a harrowing and delusional experience with.

Drew smiled and took Jeremy's hand. "Well, sir, that's a long story." His voice went a trace quieter. "I wasn't always the 'polished young man' you see today." He frowned at Lou who didn't seem to notice. "Years ago, something happened, and I well had a run-in from your partner... who doesn't seem to recognize me at this moment." He cast his eyes away from Lou who was still chatting away with some student from Meadowview happily. There was pain in Drew's eyes.

Jeremy had a bit of tact about him; he lifted his head enough to note Lou out of the corner of his eye but didn't devote much attention to him. His gaze remained on Drew. "I wouldn't call him my partner, don't worry. Truth is, I barely know the guy. We got saddled together, so I don't take any offense if you don't like him."
He'd been rubbing Jeremy the wrong way all day, but Jeremy hadn't felt it necessary to put forth the energy to do anything. Mostly, he figured he was just overworked and hungry and tired, so he didn't dwell on Lou for long. They'd see each other for the rest of the day, part ways, and bump into each other in a few weeks, probably.
He could tolerate him for the rest of the day.
"That so?" he asked Drew, mindful of his volume and making sure he wasn't doing anything to catch Lou's attention. "...Doesn't matter who you were, kid. Matters who you are, and what you're doing now. If Officer Barriger gives you any trouble, you tell me, I'll vouch for you. You're a good kid. And today's not about dredging up old memories, it's about thinking of the future."

Drew's spirits lifted. A little. "Sir, I have no idea what I want to do with my life." That wasn't quite true. He knew what he wanted to with his Senshi life. He wanted to protect everyone, he wanted to rebuild his homeworld, and he wanted to be a great scholar. It was his Civilan life that he had no idea what to do with. "Sir, I love space, but I don't have the skills or desire to be an astronaut." At least not a Civilian. "I love art, but I don't see how that will help others and that is the main thing I want to do. So I guess that is what I want to do with my life. Help others."

"Well, there's a ton of options to do that," Jeremy said easily. "Lot of opportunities in Destiny City. Safe ones, too--if you don't want to be out in the line of duty. Of course," he shrugged. "I love it. I wouldn't change my job for anything else in the world. To be honest, I can't imagine what I would do if I had to change careers."
He'd wanted to be a police officer for as long as he could remember. He wanted to be the one people could depend on. He wanted to have the authority to stand up to people who needed to be put down.
...He'd needed a job as soon as he could get one and Destiny City was always in dire need of new officers.
But he wasn't here to chase the kid away, he was here to put in a good word about the department. "You'd be surprised, though. You know, it wasn't so long ago that I heard they were looking for an art teacher. Art therapy, specifically. A lot of people that go through traumatic events and are in recovery need an outlet. If you like doing art and helping people, maybe look into that? I mean, you'd still need a psych degree probably, but if you're interested, you should definitely look into that. Otherwise, there's a lot of positions where you can help people. City's almost always looking for doctors, nurses, EMTs, police officers--dispatchers, and desk workers, if you don't want to deal with the danger. Case workers, therapists, fire fighters, teachers. Don't settle for retail or a little cubicle if you can help it. There's a big world out there--and if you're interested in space, I can only imagine what being kept in a tiny room, all cooped up would do to you."

Of all the things that Officer Fischer seemed to be saying, for some reason, Drew found himself focusing on the police officer job. Wasn't that something he kind of already did? So the danger did not bother him, not at all. But would they take him? Considering that he had been quite the hooligan for several years... he would have to ask... He looked Officer Fischer in the eye. "Sir, I used to live quite the delinquent life. Would I be... still welcome to join the force?"

Jeremy didn't flinch; instead, he just shrugged somewhat dismissively. He didn't have the heart to tell him that Destiny City was in such dire need for a police force that they probably would have taken anyone who didn't have a felony on their record. Petty crimes? There were probably some departments.
"You're still a kid," he said instead. "Kids make mistakes. Don't think so much about who you were, or what you've done. They'll want to see that you've cleaned up your act, sure, but I mean. Get good grades, do some community service, keep a clean record?" He nodded. "I could see you in a uniform, yeah."
That much was true; Drew didn't seem like a bad kid. And hell, he'd done his fair share of living the delinquent life. Only, he'd done a pretty good job of not getting caught. A product of his environment, though. He did what he needed to. For himself, sometimes. Mostly for Myles. Having a little brother made you do things you might not have thought to do for yourself, and considering he knew Drew had Dria to worry about he wasn't going to judge the kid too harshly.

Drew thought about that. "Sir, I have a 3.1 GPA. I've kept my nose clean for three years. I've not done much community service, but I have worked as an intern at my parents' engineering company for a year and a half. It specializes in making products that help people and the world. Bones Engineering. I have continuous good reports." He should have good reports, as he did all the grunt work, nasty work, anything that no one else wanted to do. And he did it without question or complaint - not that he was complaining.

Jeremy nodded as he listened to the boy speak. "Oh, yeah?" he said; he seemed to think this was satisfactory and cracked another grin. "Then, I'd say you've got quite a good chance. Here, let me give you an application to fill out--you can stop by the department and drop it off. I mean, you can go online too, if you'd rather fill it out there? But if you drop it off in person, you might get to meet some of the other officers. Plus, if you come when I'm there, I'll put in a good word. They've got a lot of programs--ride-alongs, internships. If you're interested, you should definitely look into it."
Jeremy reached over to grab a brochure and a few other pieces of information. "You can go over these, there's some information on different positions the department has. And my card," he pulled it out of his pocket. "It's got my work phone on it. I don't always pick up, but I do my best. So if you want to schedule something, give me a text or call and leave a message. Maybe we could work out a time to drop it off. Maybe I can show you around the department some time. I mean, if you're interested, I'll help out however I can."

Drew took the brochure, the card, and the application eagerly. He nodded and listened carefully. He too broke into a grin. "Thank you, Officer. I'll call you next week, okay?" The bell rang. He got up, "Well, I'll see you soon Sir."

Jeremy paused at the bell but nodded. "I'll be waiting for that call. Have a good day in school, make me proud." He flashed a smile and raised a hand to wave the boy off.
He had liked that grin, that eagerness.
They needed more people on the force with a good attitude, he figured, shooting his partner-for-the-day a side eyed look before shaking his head.
Rough past or not, he figured Drew had the makings they needed. And if he wasn't quite ready yet, there was still time to learn.
Sailor Hawk That sounds good to me, thank you for the RP!
