Steele was in his office.

Whether or not he was in his office actually being productive was a question for the ages, but on this occasion, he actually was, staring down at a pale blue file folder that had a large stack of depositions that he needed to go through. He'd asked Nora to order them by date.

This had been a mistake.

Steele picked up one of the papers, staring dismally at the purple glitter pen scrawled across the top of it, then put it gently back down, carefully, as though if he did anything sudden, it would somehow transfer the glitter to him instead, and he was wearing a very nice, brand new suit from Valentino's today.

Solas, actually, liked her job.

It was pleasant, even when she suspected she was working for a possible Negaverse agent.

That whole bit aside, it was pleasant.

She got her work done in a timely matter, and could more often than not squeeze in her homework in from her online classes in between her various duties. Really, the biggest hurdle she had to jump on a day to day basis was Nora. Well. More like run constant damage control.

Today? At This moment, Solas was looking over the monthly credit card statement for the business card. She was making sure there were no false charges. So far, everything was coming back fine. Supplies for the office, gas for a trip to meet a client, paying for a dinner with a client---

Then something jumped out like a lighthouse in the night.

A couple thousand dollar transaction from Valentino's.

Solas' eyes narrowed briefly.

Steele.

Solas stood from her desk, taking the statement with her as she moved down the hall and towards the man in question's office. She paused outside his door, and rapped her knuckles on the frame. "Mr. Moore?" She asked. "Do you have a few minutes?"

It took Steele a few moments to reply, not because he wasn't paying attention, but because he was still staring at the purple glitter on his notes as though if he kept staring, it would somehow make it all go away and disappear into a void somewhere.

Sadly it didn't. Maybe if he took all of Nora's glitter pens and gave them to Sinoite or something. The man was an artist; he could probably do something better with a bunch of glitter pens than write loopy notes on depositions that were supposed to be professional.

He was not thinking about Sinoite. Or Ashley. Whatever identity he was.

Eventually the knock made its way into the forefront of his mind. Steele looked up and saw Solas standing in his doorway, looking as professional as ever in her outfit, which was a relief, because Solas was professional and that was much better than glitter pens.

"Yes, of course," he said. "Come right in. What's up?"

Wow.

He was wearing it.

Ever since she started working here, Solas had made it a point to familiarize herself with the cut of suits and styles from the various expensive vendors Steele preferred. She had only made it her business to know because the man was forcing it to be. Like using the company credit card for his suit addiction. It was quickly becoming a rampant problem due to the frequency it was occurring as well.

Solas stepped in when she was invited, and resisted the urge to rub the man's face in this statement like a puppy who piddled on the floor.

"I was reviewing the monthly statement for the company credit card---"

She placed the document on Steele's desk, carefully avoiding the glitter bombed documents he had, and pointed to the line from Valentino's with a pen. "And I saw this." She looked at the man, a brow quirking. "Could you explain to me what was purchased from there and for what purpose?"

She knew. She knew it all, but this was how she worked on unraveling it. By starting with the man and his reasoning.

It was always a dangerous sign when the first sentence was something like I was reviewing the monthly statement for the company credit card. Steele very carefully didn't react, although he could feel the weight of Solas' suspicious and way too knowing stare on him like a physical weight.

s**t. Uh.

Steele thought fast. He was a lawyer. That was what he did.

"A suit," he said smoothly, smiling up at her with his twinkling blue eyes and his sleek blond curls. "It was part of an attempt at making myself more presentable to clients. Nobody wants to work for a lawyer who can't dress himself well, because, well, appearance is everything, especially in court."

Steele gave his secretary the most winning smile he could come up with.

"It was an investment," he said brightly, "On behalf of the firm."

It was cute he thought he could sway her with the twinkling blue eyes and sleek blond curls. Too bad he didn't know he had to have ice cold blue eyes, sleek short black hair, and be Russian to sway her. Too. Bad.

Solas' expression remained neutral as he spoke.

"Mn."

A sound of acknowledgement that she heard his reasoning. Not that she agreed. "Mr. Moore, you already have a wide selection of suits." She had seen so many since she had started. She'd been working here for a little under two months now. "And quite a few of those new suits lately have been showing up on the statement." Her brow rose higher.

"Is it really necessary to buy from Valentino? Burberry? Saint Laurent? Brioni? You know you can get a suit that looks exactly like those for a fraction of the price."

Steele felt himself slowly wilting from the inside out. Like a banana peel that had been left out on the countertop that someone (Steele) had forgotten about until it was oozing over the side of the counter and in danger of falling onto the floor where someone would inevitably step on it and then yell about safety hazards and stupidity (Rob).

"But..." said Steele, in a small, hopeful sort of voice. "They're not good enough. And what if someone can tell it's from a discount store? What if they notice the label doesn't say Valentino on it and it makes them realize I'm just a poser and they fire me as their lawyer?"

He was doing a fairly good imitation of The Scream.

"I'm not saying discount. I'm saying another brand that makes the exact same thing but at a more reasonable price. No one's going to see the label unless you take the jacket off, anyways."

Solas almost wanted to snort at the poser comment, but she knew Steele's fragile ego was dangling on the line right now, so she kept it in.

"As much as the clothes make the person, Mr. Moore, the person makes the clothes too. Your suit can look expensive without actually being expensive." The woman ran a thumb along the collar of her black blazer.

"J.C. Penny." She said, because she wasn't going to pay more than fifty dollars for a nice jacket. "You wouldn't know unless I tell you---but the reason I'm even bringing this up is because you can't keep using the company card for your personal spending habits."

"But what if I have to take off the jacket because it's hot or something?" Steele asked, an edge of desperation in his voice. "What if I take off my jacket and someone sees what's underneath and they - " He dropped his voice to a scandalized whisper. "What if they think I decided to get a rip off brand and they decide I'm a rip off lawyer?"

It was completely beside the point that he already was a rip off lawyer. Steele was back to doing his Scream impression.

"B-but..." he said, shoulders slumping. "I mean...it's for a company reason isn't it...?"

He gave her a hopeful look.

You are a rip off lawyer. That suit would fit, so wear it.

Solas' patience was infinite. She dated Sergei Vetrov, after all. "Mr. Moore." She started. "Ninety-nine percent of your clients don't even know what a name like Valentino means. Your clients aren't Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. More often than not, they're of middle class wage, blue collar workers who either want a divorce from a cheating spouse or a settlement for being rear ended by the city cement truck."

Brows lifted as she looked at him.

"The suit is only worn by you, it doesn't stay in the office, and it sits in your closet when it's not being worn by you. Does that sound like it's for the company?"

Steele withered under Solas' steely (pun not intended) glare. Then he said in a very small voice,

"No."

"Exactly."

Solas took back the statement, and then held out her hand.

It was clear what she wanted placed in it.

The company credit card.

Steele stared at her.

Then, slowly, he reached into his pocket, slowly extracted the card, and with a look that suggested he was handing over his first born alpaca child, passed Solas the company credit card.

It hurt.

"Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Moore."

Solas replied like the good secretary she was. She held onto it, along with her pen and the statement. "If you find your wardrobe in dire need in the future, I'll be more than happy to assess the credit line, and then go forward from there and get what you need."

She would do the shopping.

The woman turned on her heel, and exited the room.

She then proceeded to hide the card where Steele would never dare look. Solas used a tacky strip adhesive to stick the card underneath the bottom of Nora's desk while the girl was away. It would be safe from Steele's surplus spending.

Steele, meanwhile, stared at his desk in dismay.

He sat like that for a long time.
