The whole 'powered' thing was mostly a hassle in Marathon's opinion. There were a few benefits, of course, like the added physical boosts to his already impressive speed and okay-ish strength. Cee or Nereid whatever the hell she called herself, made some comments about beating up bad guys and leveling up and frankly, Marathon had tuned most of it out.
He was only interested in how much better his parkour game was like this.
Well and potentially finding that one chick with the weird shadow creature thing. She was a pretty good lay and now that he had a better handle on what he was, he was pretty sure that they could find some fun ways to explore his limits.
Tonight, he'd been working on his scaling buildings game.
He had learned two things, he could clear small one story buildings pretty easily. Two story buildings weren't too tough either and if he got enough of a jump he could go back and forth and pop up at the top of a five story building without too much effort.
His jump game was pretty strong too. He felt pretty confident when he took a break atop one of the club buildings downtown.
Above him a bird circled, the caw drawing Marathon's attention enough to get him to look up. Dark brows furrowed and all of a sudden this giant mother ******** bird came screeching down, claws out at him.

Like a good soldier, Gehenna did his rounds a couple of nights a week. At some point after sobering up and helping Ariel - Cinnabar - escape her fate in the Negaverse, he had been deemed responsible enough to be given back his strength and then some. It had surprised him when it happened, especially since he had yet to round up the women that it had begged him to find, but he guessed that Tanais was not something that even his code piece had foreseen. It did not mean his wonder was through with him, yet, and he felt its judgment on the back of his neck like a parole officer, waiting. Watching. There were promises to fulfill and he could not make good on them yet. Instead, he waited, did his rounds, and lived his life as best as he possibly could.
Tonight was just another night like any other. He was on the outskirts of the clubs, leaping casually from building top to building top as he cleared the streets below, quite and alone and more somber than Kamboja Vaiphei had ever been in his life. It simply was; he simply was. It was enough.
The Knight had been just about to turn his back on the area when he saw, in the distance, a page being followed by a youma that was, well, <******** huge. A growl resonated in his throat as heavy boots began to beat against the roof beneath him and his heavy form picked up speed. With a grace that seemed awkward on a large man that should have been weighed down in armor, he sprung across the gap in the roofs and barreled forward. His cloak trailed and his teeth grit but his eyes remained locked on the descending beast that was screeching its battle cry.
There was a vent between him and the creature and he leaped on top of it, a man accustomed to his own strength and weight, and jumped with all the force in his legs that he could muster. The pointed tip of his gauntlet gleamed in the wash of moonlight overhead as his fist pulled back and he propelled forward, ready to crash into the flying beast and take it down.

Gehenna might have been a good soldier, but Marathon certainly wasn't.
He cared very, very little for all the hoity toity magical nonsense of whatever being a knight meant. Nereid had given him some convoluted run down that didn't make any sense to him outside of acknowledging that he was capable of doing things with more strength and agility than before.
Which, that was pretty sweet considering how strong and agile he already was despite his height.
Of course that meant when a giant ******** bird swooped down to attack him, he was not remotely prepared to handle it.
"What the he---" Marathon had started to say, turning on his heel when some burly dude in dreads and red came busting onto the scene.
Gehenna's fist connected with one of Koschei's wings and the bird hit the ground with a heavy THUD, the ground beneath his body cracking.
"Do you want to play?" The bird cawed, six eyes blinking in a shuttering succession.

"Don't just stand there."
Dark eyes flashed sidelong to the page that was just staring at him. He, himself, was falling back and sinking into his knees. The pauldron over his left shoulder turned forward to bare the mark of his wolf to the youma; it glowed faintly where it was etched into the armor and he knew, in the back of his mind, that Daoi was there just as sure as she was written in the plate if he needed to call her.
He shifted a little, beginning a circle around the beast as he waited to see what it would do.
"I don't know if you would call what I want to do playing, my ugly friend."

Koschei's head turned, nearly upside down, as the youma hopped back onto his talons. While it was unclear where the raven was looking, the head was cocked towards the wolf mark had drawn his attention.
"Do you think that dogs can catch birds?" The youma asked, beak open but unmoving.
Suddenly the bird was airborne again, all four wings flapping to keep him suspended above.
Marathon swallowed hard, dark brows furrowing as he looked from monster to man. "The ******** do you expect me to do?" He said, clearly exasperated and not having this situation.
If it hadn't been obvious by his original lack of proper reaction to the youma, it would be obvious now that he was very very green.
"Look, buddy, these?" He patted the foam padding masquerading as armor when he lifted an arm. "These won't protect against s**t-- definitely not that s**t!"

Why were these things always so damn creepy?
Gehenna watched it blink its too many eyes with a look that seemed a little uneasy and then it was parting its beak to spout eerie nonsense at him. It wasn't the first time he had encountered a talking youma but they weren't common and it only made him more unsettled to hear the voice pouring out of a bird's face. The Knight didn't answer, though, because he knew there was no point. What good would taunting a heartless, wicked monster get him? He had learned not to talk back to the Negaverse's worst atrocities years ago.
"You've got to be ******** kidding me," he sighed. He heard the dull smack of the other man's hand on plastic and wanted to roll his eyes. As a Page he had a couple of leather hides and tights; was it worth his breath even trying to explain it? Probably not.
"Fine. If you're not at least gonna take a swing or something, then stay out of the way. I'm not going to apologize to you if you get punched in the face."
Gehenna's wide palms curled into fists and he turned his shoulders forward; he was no longer defending, he was squared up and unafraid of whatever threat this giant, flying monstrosity posed. Without his magic drawn, the spikes across his knuckles were out and exposed, gleaming bright as heated metal. He held the fist high, close to his face, and narrowed a pair of honey brown eyes on the menace overhead.
"Come on then, stop playing with your food."

Marathon shrugged almost hopelessly at the knight, unsure what the buffer guy expected him to do. It wasn't like he had signed up for this s**t.
No, some dumb ******** mirror appeared to him when some ghastly thing had tried to attack him and now he had this 'ability' that had some benefits, but it was starting to feel like the cons outweighed the pros.
Part of him was tempted to just stomp off, clearly muscles over there could handle the giant ******** bird by himself. It was no skin off his back if the guy got eaten.
It wasn't his problem. He didn't decide to play 'hero'.
But...the dude in red had interfered to save his a**. So he should...probably.. ********.
Meanwhile, the bird youma chirped, ready to swoop down with his talons out, ready to snatch the Mars knight up off the ground where he couldn't do anything.
In a shitty attempt to be 'useful' Marathon willed his mirror to appear and hucked it the bird, clocking it in the head just as it swooped down. Luckily for them, it made Koschei halt, eyes blinking as if he'd been dazed just inches from hitting the knight.

Gehenna steeled himself as the bird rose and settled into the angle of his arc. Dark eyes tried to judge how fast he could dive, how strong he might be, where his weak points were and what part of himself he would use to attack -
and then a mirror was flying, tossed end over end, and the bird halted as it socked him right in the noggin. The Mars Knight almost laughed at the sight of it, maybe five years ago he would have, but instead he reeled his humor back to a wry, dampened grin. Useless as the lanky page was, at least it was an opening.
The strong, weapon-tipped arm pulled back and loosed with all of his might. It was an upper cut that aimed the sharp, pointed tips of his gauntlet right under the birds chin - or, at least, the area beneath his sharp, clacking beak. He didn't pause to wait and see if it was effective but instead pulled back his other arm and plowed it against the side of his head, then his first again, a rapid succession of pummeling fists meant to keep the beast dazed and at bay.
This close, maybe it was unwise, but he still had his magic in his back pocket if he needed it. He just hoped that he didn't.

Now that he no longer had anything to use but his fist, Marathon had no idea what the burlier man wanted from him. It was ridiculously tempting to just turn on his heel and high tail it out of there, he'd always been quick and he was a runner so now that he was super powered...
But the guy saved his a** so he probably owed it to him, still....
He shook his head, carefully inching closer with a grimace. ********, he didn't want anything to do with this fighting monsters bullshit.
The bird on the other hand had broken free of it's daze, head snapping just as the gauntlet smacked it in the throat. A loud, pained squawk would be heard before Koschei slammed into the ground, the heaviness and sheer size of the bird damaging whatever was beneath it.
Koschei did not seem deterred especially when he screeched in response.
Raven's Screech: Letting out a screeching caw, Koschei produces a sound wave that's ear splitting and the force of the sound wave pushes the targets back or brings them to their knees.
Duration: 20 seconds

<******** was the only thing that Gehenna could think of, the only thing that entered his mind at all, as an ear-splitting screech echoed through his skull and made his eardrums feel like they were going to burst in upon themselves. Even as he felt the force of it rock his body, he tried to keep his eyes open. He fell to one knee, clutched his hands pointedly over his ears, and stared down that stupid ******** bird like his life depended on keeping him in his sights.
What was the best course of action here?
There was another, weaker man.
He had Daoi, but he didn't know enough about this youma to know if her magic would make it turn back and escape from a winged nuisance seemed improbable. It wasn't a risk he could take.
It left only one choice, really.
As the shrill, spine numbing screech died, Gehenna pushed himself back up to his feet.
"Just run, kid."
The Mars Knight right hand curled into a fist and he pulled on his magic, channeling down into the gauntlet that was as much a part of him as his own heart. A slow, steady breath swelled in his chest as he felt it anchor and heard the soft, audible click of the spines curling down over his fingers. His vision bled red, stained like rose-tinted glasses, and when his lips parted next it was in a roar of unrivaled fury, answering the screech that still made his ears ring somewhere beneath his berserker magic.
Heavy, thundering footsteps echoed in the sill night air and he lunged, wild and furious, at the youma. Anything he reached, he would pummel until one or both of them were dead or gone.
Power: The power is triggered by Gehenna balling his right hand into a fist and focusing his energy on the spiked gauntlet until the spikes curl down and over his knuckles, reinforcing the fist position. It will be stopped as soon as he chooses or is forced to unball his fist. It may be used for a total of 45 seconds but drains energy twice as fast, leaving him more exhausted than before he triggered it.
While active, a temporary berserker rage is triggered, during which all damage is increased by 25%. This rage also makes Gehenna less prone to reacting to damage and almost completely removes his ability to differentiate allies and enemies.
At the Knight stage, his power can expand from his gauntlet to include any portion of his armor while the magic is active. If he were to be injured, his armor can temporarily 'piece' him back together so that he can continue to fight. For instance, it may pierce through a broken arm to hold it together or fuse with the skin over a bleeding wound to act like stitches. He will continue to fight as if he has not sustained these wounds due to the berserker rage, but the moment his magic has run out the armor will withdraw and he will suffer the damage of the original infliction plus any extra damage possibly caused by the armor's aid.

Marathon's ears were ringing and the page had dropped to his knees with his hands over his ears, eyes shut as if it'd help the noise from being so loud. By the time it stopped and he registered that the dude in red was talking to him he had missed what had been said entirely.
s**t.
He only had time to stumble back before the guy was bursting forward.
Koschei on the other hand, seemed ready for the knight to launch at him, beak snapping shut and wings unfurling to try and pull him off the ground before he was reached. The first contact sent him backwards but the youma responded by lashing out with this talons, beak open and closing to chatter.

The berserker felt his fist connect with flesh and somewhere in the back of his mind there was the register of pain, of something searing across his face and down his neck. A talon opened a gash from his cheek to his collarbone and when it did, the armor across his chest shifted, crawling up his neck like a thing come alive until it covered the entirety of the wound. It fused, stifled the bleeding like a hot iron pressed into the flesh, and not a second was lost to care for blood loss or the pain or the repercussions.
Nothing stopped him, nothing mattered anymore.
Fists sought out the flapping, chattering target like it was a bullseye. He wouldn't lose a noisy one, he couldn't see anything but those beady, blinking eyes and the flash of talons and a beak. It was ugly. A roar of frustrated rage bellowed from his chest as he pulled up both great, heavy hands and let them rise above his head - then he slammed them with all of his supernatural strength, bringing them down like an anvil against those too many, ugly eyes.

If it were possible to read his expression, Koschei might've looked surprised by the way the armor reacted to his attacks. Fortunately, Marathon was not limited by non-human features and his jaw literally dropped as the armor came alive and did it's thing.
"What the ********," he whispered, eyes wide and standing around in shock.
Was his crazy outfit going to do that s**t to him? Did he even want to find out?
Christ, this whole powered nonsense was starting to sound like a bullshit thing all over again. He should have never let Ciaran convince him it could be fun to test his limits.
As much as he enjoyed adrenaline rushes, he wasn't really into brawling. Or armor coming alive. Yeah, that was freaky.
An ugly, loud, and screeching squawk escaped Koschei and broke Marathon out of his stupor, the guy scrambling backward when the bird went down beneath the force and strength of the fists. His beak snapped, legs in the air scratching against whatever they could find purchase against before with a cry, the youma shattered into a pile of feathers and dust.

The red tide in his vision began to retreat and he hissed low between his teeth as it took the magic of his armor with it, leaving behind a fresh wound that appeared to have been cauterized and a patch of shiny, stinging flesh where the magicked steel had fused with his flesh. It felt like a burn, raw and painful even in the small flutter of wind that drifted over the rooftops.
It wasn't the worst he had ever suffered, though.
The notches across his knuckles clicked open and he turned, heaving chest and aching breaths, to look at the useless page that he had rescued. He knew he must have seemed a wild thing, exhausted and spent amidst a pile of shifting dust and feathers with a dozen shallow scrapes across any open bit of flesh the bird had been able to reach, but he cared very little.
"You okay?"
It wasn't empathetic so much as it was resigned. The kid hadn't gotten close to the fight but he wanted to be sure before he left.

Whatever the dude was doing seemed to be working because as Marathon watched, the monster bird burst into a cloud of....something that the page didn't care to get close enough to examine. He knew the monster thing was a problem, he just hadn't expected to have a giant bird come screeching down trying to take a bite of him.
Of course he hadn't expected the other guy to burst onto the scene and do whatever his armor bullshit did.
"Uh," Marathon's mouth hung open for a minute before he snapped it shut and shook his head so that he could stop acting like an idiot. "Yeah, yeah," he mumbled waving his hand about before he took a step back, eyeing the cauterized patch of flesh left behind when the armor retreated.
"Does uh, all armor do that?" He nodded his head at the wound before green eyes drifted over to the pile of dust and feathers. "Do they always do that?" He jerked his thumb that way.
In all his years in DC, he had managed to avoid being attacked by monsters like that somehow. Maybe he hung out in the right areas or maybe they didn't like cars. It didn't matter, he wasn't keen on a repeat.
"Oh," he rubbed his nose trying to decide how much he cared before sighing. "Thanks or whatever."
Marathon considered sticking around to make sure the guy hadn't gotten too injured but he was also pretty ready to get the ******** outta dodge, so he did.
