MISSION 006 - THE ROSE GARDEN

Location:The most picturesque wing of the Witzend Grand Arboretum, the Carroll Memorial Rose Gardens are world-renowned for their antiquated elegance and charm. In preparation for the Arboretum’s annual Rose Bloom Festival in June, a team of officers had been testing an energy draining operation with tiny youma in the turnstiles, siphoning tiny orbs from each guest. However, the latest reports indicate that the youma are going missing just as fast as they’re being installed, and the local agents are scratching their heads. Could this be the result of senshi activity in the area? The local branch has asked for volunteer officers to take part in an overnight watch of the area, just in case.

Requirements: 2 - 4 Agents, Must Be Powered, No Stage Limitations

Debriefing: The Arboretum is privately owned and operated, one of a few landmarks that exist outside of Negaverse control. Agents taking part in this mission must do so with utmost discretion and stealth--the Witzend Branch would prefer not to deal with hushing a PR scandal about mysterious officers sneaking around at night.

♠️STEP ONE:

The ticket booths have closed, the last of the groundskeepers have left. With no one else in the arboretum, the gardens are hushed into the whispers of insects and bats in the evening air. Some find it comforting; others unnerving.

All players must roll 1d6 to investigate the area:

    Quote:
1 - Did you know that the arboretum houses over 100 breeds of rose, in every color of the rainbow? You discover that reading one of the garden placards, but don’t see any sign of senshi. Focus! (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
2 - Stop and smell the roses! As you walk through the garden you find yourself distracted by the array of rose. The area you find yourself in is filled with white roses. They stretch as far as you can see. There is one rose that looks out of place. It's a dark red, almost like--- When you touch it, you discover that the coloring comes off. Has someone been trying to paint these white roses red? You're too distracted, but you make note of the oddity anyway. (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
3 - You come across a pocket of roses that are surrounded by teal colored butterflies. If you stare long enough, you start to notice that they're forming their own rose pattern on top of the roses. It's peculiar, so you use your tablet to take a picture. For some reason the flash goes off and you've found yourself attracting the attention of one of the security guards. (Do not roll in step two, you must respond to #2.)
4 - There's a frog on one of the fountains you pass. It croaks loud enough to get your attention and you take a moment to observe it. Several minutes pass before it hops away, to your dismay what felt like a handful of minutes has actually been almost fifteen! You need to get it together before someone notices you! (-3 from your next roll)
5 - It looks like some of the turnstiles have soot on them, almost like scorch marks. That alone wouldn’t be cause for concern, but when you step back, it looks like the soot was imprinted in a series of heart patterns. A Captain or higher will be able to recognize these marks as the residue of senshi magic.
6 - Most of the arboretum is considered too ‘historic’ to install security cameras. However, you notice there’s a camera inside the gift shop that just happens to be facing the turnstiles from inside. A quick review of the footage shows blurry figures arrive at the gates two nights ago, followed by a blinding flash of light. Classic senshi activity. (Add +2 to your next roll)

♠️STEP TWO:

    Each player must roll 1d6:

    Quote:
1 - You find nothing but the sounds of crickets, the running water of the fountains. The wait is starting to test your patience.
2 - You round a corner and are caught by a flash of light. Someone gasps, then shouts, “Oi! Who’s there?” You’ve been found by a security guard roaming the grounds--do you neutralize the witness or attempt to negotiate (Quote Nuxaz)?
3 - Something rustles in the bushes--and a rabbit hops out, sniffing the air before it retreats into the night. It’ll take a few moments for your heart rate to settle, but otherwise you’re okay.
4 - There appears to be a trail of footprints pressed into the grass of the gardens that seem fresh. One of them looks a little singed, something akin to a burned heart damaging the grass. The footprints are too dainty to be the security guard you've seen around. You follow them.
5 - You're distracted by a particularly beautifully blooming rose. When you reach out to touch it, you p***k a finger on a thorn you were too careless to notice. It stings and you feel a little woozy. (Subtract 3 from any combat rolls.)
6 - You hear footsteps and duck into the shadows--it sounds like there are young voices across the garden, and they’re having the most interesting conversation…(Quote Nuxaz for a snippet)

You must resolve the first Stage Two encounter before proceeding to the next player’s, until all players have rolled. Then you may regroup and move to Stage Three (Quote Nuxaz).

♠️STEP THREE:

You feel it, the faintest flicker at the edge of your senses, and then a glimmer--there’s an Order aura nearby.

One player must R1d4. Modify your roll by the following:

    Quote:
If a third-stage or higher character is present as part of your party, subtract one (does not stack).
If a guardian cat is present as part of your party, add one (does not stack).
If a character neutralized the security guard, subtract one.
If a character correctly identified evidence of a senshi presence (5/6 in stage one, 4 in stage 2), add one. (This effect stacks--so two pieces of evidence means +2)

    Final Results:
    Quote:
1 - Maybe it was a powerful aura tipping them off, or a body left strewn and unattended, but the senshi team have been alerted to your presence and have come prepared. You all feel a flash of light and a burning sensation on your clothes and skin as you’re caught in the ambush of a senshi attack, leaving behind little hearts singed all over your bodies. (Quote Nuxaz to engage! Everyone loses 5 HP to start).
2 - The auras linger for a moment, and then fade into the night. No one takes the bait tonight, and you go home empty-handed. (This mission has failed--file a report, this mission may be repeated another night)
3 - You wait in silence, and eventually you’re rewarded--a team of sailor scouts approach the turnstiles, cautious and ready for a fight. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!)
4 - From the depths of the garden comes a lone figure, a sailor scout cut off from the rest of their group. It looks like they’ve chosen to divide and conquer this evening, which leaves them...vulnerable. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!).

Theodore was eager to prove to his mistress that he was the most capable guardian to have ever graced the Negaverse with their presence. Miss Dia already knew he was the very best, but he intended to ensure that he proved it. Which was why he had used Labyrinthite's tablet to assemble a few random officers to accompany him on this mission.

They didn't need to know until they arrived that it was Theodore who had called them and not the big bad stupid pink-haired man who was running things.

He waited patiently for all of them to arrive, fluffy tail curled around his smaller frame.

Reinerite would have been hard pressed not to know something about mauvians, given the length of time that she had been part of the Negaverse - however that knowledge was not as much as it could be given that she had not personally met one, much less had any direct dealings with any of them.

She'd no idea that that was about to change as she'd acknowledged the request for assistance with a mission that had come through from General Labyrinthite, sending back her immediate acceptance as she scanned the details provided.

The Carroll Memorial Rose Gardens - she'd heard of them, albeit in passing - had seen mention of the gardens in article write ups from time to time. Although that was pretty much the limit of her knowledge given that neither gardening or visiting flower shows were things that she was particularly interested in.

She didn't have to be interested in them in order to assist however - and the missing youma did seem strange.

She made her way over to the meeting place, timing it to make sure that she was deliberately ten minutes early as grey eyes glanced around "General? Captain Reinerite reporting in as requested."

After the meeting at the Hub locations, December was still just as huge of a wreck as he had been before.

His nerves were shot, and it took more than a little bit of time to move from his seat, back into his room for a little bit of rest before he needed to probably do something productive. And it helped a little bit, the color coming back to his face and his breathing finally beginning to settle down again.

At least that was the case until his tablet pinged with a notice from the big boss himself. His heart dropped straight to his stomach, the need to vomit winning as he ran towards the bathroom he had to let go of what little he had eaten since leaving Destiny City.

This was it... This was the moment he'd be punished for the lies his general told..

The beauty of the roses did nothing to calm his nerves; each step that ran out in Fettelite's ears spoke of his lies, and of how this was the end for him, no matter how hard he tried to convince his usefulness. Only the smallest bit of relief came over him when he realized there was no general here. He'd live for a little while longer. Who was there though was a Captain with lovely blue hair, and a fluffy cat...

"E-excuse me... Miss... Um... Did General Labyrinthite call you in too...? Do you know where he is?"

Theodore was pleased when Reinerite arrived early and his chest puffed up proudly when he looked at her. His large, fluffy tail flicked across the ground before it curled around his paws.

The lieutenant he'd randomly selected had arrived as well and his nose twitched with excitement. The other person he had called upon had not but he was eager to get started.

"He won't be joining us," Theodore responded, drawing their attention to him even if they hadn't before. "You both are so," he drawled, clearly thinking highly of himself, "lucky because I will be leading this mission."

Miss Prissy would be proud of him, he knew it. "My name is Theodore." He looked at them expectantly to properly introduce themselves. "Hurry, now I'd like to get started."

A lieutenant had arrived a few minutes into her wait, his uniform mainly dark greys, with colour in the form of the brown waist coat that he wore.

There was a cat too, a fluffy-looking Persian, garbed smartly in a top hat and bow tie. The star set on its forehead very much gave away the fact that the cat wasn't an ordinary feline - because ordinary felines didn't come complete with stars in their forehead.

The Lieutenant had moved closer just as Reinerite had been about to ask the cat if they were waiting for the General that had summoned her too, but at that moment the Lieutenant had spoken up.

"Yes he did Lieutenant" she said in answer to the other's question, "But, no I haven't seen him - I only arrived a few moments before you did."

And then the cat had spoken up to state that General Labyrinthite wouldn't be coming after all and that he - and the voice was very much a masculine one - would actually be leading the mission.

Reinerite had frowned slightly, because truth be told the idea of a cat leading the mission was somewhat ridiculous, for all that she knew that mauvians - and that was definitely what the cat staring expectantly at her was - were not ordinary cats.

However the summons had been a genuine one and had definitely come from Labyrinthite - and the General didn't strike her as someone who wasn't aware of what was going on about him - so it seemed that she was supposed to follow the mauvian, strange as it seemed.

She gave a small smile, "My name is Captain Reinerite" she said, her words for the mauvian and lieutenant both, waiting for the Lieutenant to introduce himself before adding "And I agree" because the sooner the mission was completed the better.

She wasn't sure if anyone else was meant to be arriving, but knew that standing around for too long would be a good way to draw attention to themselves.

It was quiet, at least apart from their voices and the whispers of insects and bats, the quiet somewhat strange for somewhere that during the daytime was so popular - but the booths were long closed and they were all here to do a job.

A pocket of roses surrounded by teal coloured butterflies, caught her attention, due the strange movement of the butterflies which seemed almost as if they were forming their own rose pattern on top of the roses.

It was peculiar enough that Reinerite took out her tablet and used it to take a picture of the roses and butterflies–

She was not however expecting the flash to go off, allowing herself a momentarily wince for the indiscretion.

Reinerite's kind smile quickly put Fettelite at ease, and it earned her a smile back. And honestly the idea that the Cat had called them not the general helped massively as well. This was the first time the little Lieutenant had met such a creature, but he had heard about them before, and found comfort that they could be trusted. How could anything that cute not be?

"Oh, I see... Um... Alright, let's get to work then, Thank you for letting me join you on this mission... Uh..." Well, cats weren't generals... But he was still higher than a the captain in this mission, right? So if he had a rank... Maybe Major. "Theodore. Major Theodore? Boss Theodore? Whatever you'd like! Oh, but yes! I'll get started right away!"

Now, Fettelite wasn't the brightest young man out there, evident by the way he looked around helplessly for a moment and how he stumbled about after making a decision, but there was a little method to his actions.

Exploring didn't really leave much to do, but there was a thought Fettel had as he happily admired the flowers. Cameras.. And sure enough, there was one found, within the gift shop, and with a little bit of poking and prodding, there it was... Something flashing, something... Off. That's what senshi did, wasn't it?

But it meant he found something! With that information, he ran back to where the others were, as quietly as he could, excited to share the information he heard.

Before Theodore split up from the group he looked at the Lieutenant and with his best authoritative voice he said, "When addressing me with titles you may call me Candy King." It was clear from his tone that he would accept nothing less.

His tail flicked behind him when he stood, stretching out all of his feline frame before shaking his body so that his fur settled into place just like he liked.

Despite having called three and only ending up with two Theodore decided to move forward because time was precious and while he could help mute the auras in the area of the agents who had shown up, they were still at risk of drawing too much attention.

His pink nose sniffed at the air, twitching before his little paws carried him over to one of the turnstiles. The soot was worrisome but the pattern of them was more questionable. He wanted a second opinion.

"Reinerite--" he had started to call over his communicator when he saw the bright flash. Wincing he tucked himself beneath the turnstile to wait it out before he explored some more.

Managing to set the tablet's flash off, no matter how accidentally, had been bad enough - but it seemed like the small flash of light had managed to garner attention - and the lack telltale sickly-sweet aura suggested that the attention was not that of their targets.

Instead it seemed that she had managed to garner the attention of one of the security guards - just what they didn't need.

It had been her error which meant that it was down to her to fix it, but how...?

“Oi! Who’s there?”

Reinerite knew that she didn't have a lot of time to make a decision, her voice a quiet murmur over her communicator "Security guard, I'll try to slip behind him and attempt to energy drain him."

Hopefully if she could manage to neutralise the guard, by virtue of a nice little nap, then it would leave the way clear for them to continue on with the mission.

Before Fettelite made it entirely over to the gardens where he heard the team was, he got the message from Reinerite and stopped in his tracks. How close he was to where she and the guard was, he wasn't sure, but atleast the warning came through.

Without making another sound, he ducked off to the side, behind a particularly lush bush, and listened closely to see what would happen next.

"What are you doing--" The guard started, suddenly surprised by the way she slipped behind him. He swayed on his feet, going down after a bit of energy draining. He was, at least, alive. Now Reinerite just had to move him somewhere less...obvious.

Fast as she was on her feet, Reinerite knew that as Ashley she would never have managed the rather hasty plan that she had cooked up - knew that it was powered strength and speed that had given her the edge to take the security guard by surprise–

A security guard that was taking an impromptu nap, courtesy of the ball of energy now in her hand. She helped to ease him down gently - the fact that they were supposed to be fixing rather than causing problems making her more gentle than she would normally be.

But while this particular security guard was no longer an immediate problem, Reinerite also knew that she couldn't just leave him where he was.

She frowned thoughtfully for a moment, maybe leaving him on a bench would do the trick and preferably one by some of the taller bushes, make it seem like he was napping on the job somehow - maybe not the grandest of plans, but Reinerite didn't need it to be a particular grand plan - she just needed it to work and was hoping that it would do.

She reached for her communicator as she said quietly "The guard is now napping, I'll put him by a bench out of the way."

Whatever had happened with Rein, it seemed like it was resolved. And thank goodness no one was hurt! Well, of course someone was drained, but being drained and being hurt were two totally separate things. From what he knew of draining, the man or whatever that had caught his fellow Lieutenant was simply sleeping now. That scared breath he had been holding under his bush was let go, again, and he stood up, looking around to see where exactly their small group had gone.

Yet before he could find them, he heard voices, this time not over their little com, and found himself diving into the shadows of a bush once again. Tonight was certainly not good for his heart, and the sound of it thudding against his ears and nerves did not help with snooping in on their conversation, but atleast he tried.

The voices are hushed, broken up and Fettlelite is only capable of making out bits an pieces.

"They know--"

"--Fire---"

"...at the hat shop."

"Wait, I think I hear something--"

The conversation cuts off abruptly and Fettelite will hear the sound of footsteps hurrying away.

He had reemerged from beneath the turnstiles, tail flicking behind him before he had started to pad away.

“Oi! Who’s there?"

Theodore froze, right as the flashlight beam slid over his small form and he meowed almost pitifully in the face of the guard that found him.

"The bloody-- what's a cat doin' 'ere?"

He reacted impulsively, jumping up and beaming him out of the star in his forehead.

The man hit the ground with a thud and Theodore winced as it echoed.

Whoops, he could have handled that better...
