MISSION 006 - THE ROSE GARDEN

Location:The most picturesque wing of the Witzend Grand Arboretum, the Carroll Memorial Rose Gardens are world-renowned for their antiquated elegance and charm. In preparation for the Arboretum’s annual Rose Bloom Festival in June, a team of officers had been testing an energy draining operation with tiny youma in the turnstiles, siphoning tiny orbs from each guest. However, the latest reports indicate that the youma are going missing just as fast as they’re being installed, and the local agents are scratching their heads. Could this be the result of senshi activity in the area? The local branch has asked for volunteer officers to take part in an overnight watch of the area, just in case.

Requirements: 2 - 4 Agents, Must Be Powered, No Stage Limitations

Debriefing: The Arboretum is privately owned and operated, one of a few landmarks that exist outside of Negaverse control. Agents taking part in this mission must do so with utmost discretion and stealth--the Witzend Branch would prefer not to deal with hushing a PR scandal about mysterious officers sneaking around at night.

♠️STEP ONE:

The ticket booths have closed, the last of the groundskeepers have left. With no one else in the arboretum, the gardens are hushed into the whispers of insects and bats in the evening air. Some find it comforting; others unnerving.

All players must roll 1d6 to investigate the area:

    Quote:
1 - Did you know that the arboretum houses over 100 breeds of rose, in every color of the rainbow? You discover that reading one of the garden placards, but don’t see any sign of senshi. Focus! (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
2 - Stop and smell the roses! As you walk through the garden you find yourself distracted by the array of rose. The area you find yourself in is filled with white roses. They stretch as far as you can see. There is one rose that looks out of place. It's a dark red, almost like--- When you touch it, you discover that the coloring comes off. Has someone been trying to paint these white roses red? You're too distracted, but you make note of the oddity anyway. (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
3 - You come across a pocket of roses that are surrounded by teal colored butterflies. If you stare long enough, you start to notice that they're forming their own rose pattern on top of the roses. It's peculiar, so you use your tablet to take a picture. For some reason the flash goes off and you've found yourself attracting the attention of one of the security guards. (Do not roll in step two, you must respond to #2.)
4 - There's a frog on one of the fountains you pass. It croaks loud enough to get your attention and you take a moment to observe it. Several minutes pass before it hops away, to your dismay what felt like a handful of minutes has actually been almost fifteen! You need to get it together before someone notices you! (-3 from your next roll)
5 - It looks like some of the turnstiles have soot on them, almost like scorch marks. That alone wouldn’t be cause for concern, but when you step back, it looks like the soot was imprinted in a series of heart patterns. A Captain or higher will be able to recognize these marks as the residue of senshi magic.
6 - Most of the arboretum is considered too ‘historic’ to install security cameras. However, you notice there’s a camera inside the gift shop that just happens to be facing the turnstiles from inside. A quick review of the footage shows blurry figures arrive at the gates two nights ago, followed by a blinding flash of light. Classic senshi activity. (Add +2 to your next roll)

♠️STEP TWO:

    Each player must roll 1d6:

    Quote:
1 - You find nothing but the sounds of crickets, the running water of the fountains. The wait is starting to test your patience.
2 - You round a corner and are caught by a flash of light. Someone gasps, then shouts, “Oi! Who’s there?” You’ve been found by a security guard roaming the grounds--do you neutralize the witness or attempt to negotiate (Quote Nuxaz)?
3 - Something rustles in the bushes--and a rabbit hops out, sniffing the air before it retreats into the night. It’ll take a few moments for your heart rate to settle, but otherwise you’re okay.
4 - There appears to be a trail of footprints pressed into the grass of the gardens that seem fresh. One of them looks a little singed, something akin to a burned heart damaging the grass. The footprints are too dainty to be the security guard you've seen around. You follow them.
5 - You're distracted by a particularly beautifully blooming rose. When you reach out to touch it, you p***k a finger on a thorn you were too careless to notice. It stings and you feel a little woozy. (Subtract 3 from any combat rolls.)
6 - You hear footsteps and duck into the shadows--it sounds like there are young voices across the garden, and they’re having the most interesting conversation…(Quote Nuxaz for a snippet)

You must resolve the first Stage Two encounter before proceeding to the next player’s, until all players have rolled. Then you may regroup and move to Stage Three (Quote Nuxaz).

♠️STEP THREE:

You feel it, the faintest flicker at the edge of your senses, and then a glimmer--there’s an Order aura nearby.

One player must R1d4. Modify your roll by the following:

    Quote:
If a third-stage or higher character is present as part of your party, subtract one (does not stack).
If a guardian cat is present as part of your party, add one (does not stack).
If a character neutralized the security guard, subtract one.
If a character correctly identified evidence of a senshi presence (5/6 in stage one, 4 in stage 2), add one. (This effect stacks--so two pieces of evidence means +2)

    Final Results:
    Quote:
1 - Maybe it was a powerful aura tipping them off, or a body left strewn and unattended, but the senshi team have been alerted to your presence and have come prepared. You all feel a flash of light and a burning sensation on your clothes and skin as you’re caught in the ambush of a senshi attack, leaving behind little hearts singed all over your bodies. (Quote Nuxaz to engage! Everyone loses 5 HP to start).
2 - The auras linger for a moment, and then fade into the night. No one takes the bait tonight, and you go home empty-handed. (This mission has failed--file a report, this mission may be repeated another night)
3 - You wait in silence, and eventually you’re rewarded--a team of sailor scouts approach the turnstiles, cautious and ready for a fight. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!)
4 - From the depths of the garden comes a lone figure, a sailor scout cut off from the rest of their group. It looks like they’ve chosen to divide and conquer this evening, which leaves them...vulnerable. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!).

There were many things that Gansey-- Aventurine -- would have preferred to be doing than doing a rose garden scouting mission. Witzend was an unfamiliar city for him and he would have liked to walk the streets instead of having to sneak around the gardens.

Not being able to walk around like he owned the place was nearly infuriating but he wasn't exactly a stranger to creeping through foliage. Being a hunter helped with that and while he had...a shoe lace and not his crossbow, he was certain he could make it work in a pinch.

Zircon had insisted that he undertake a mission, but he didn't tell her who he could pick and somehow he had managed to rope the lovely ashy blonde he had sat beside at the meeting and the one with the fiery temper and attitude.

Maybe she had been told to play nice.

Aventurine hadn't decided if he'd play nice and he peered over the garden walls after the light of a flashlight passed by. "We should be able to move forward once the security guard turns the corner."

The senshi with them was techincally the superior officer accompanying them, but Aventurine wanted to take charge anyway. He was clearly the most capable.

In truth, Minium would have preferred to be anywhere but with the full-of-himself punk and his hoity-toity lady friend in that moment. After Chase gave her such a pointed stare she knew she couldn't back out of this, even if it meant pretending at playing nice for a while. He wasn't always a hard a** but when it came to the job, to missions that needed to be focused on, well. She couldn't turn them down for any reason and still expect to stay in his good graces.

Being that she didn't know anyone here very well apart from Mr. Big Bad himself, it probably could have been worse. Maybe she could at least help the guy trip and land on his face.

A shoulder leaned into the wall next to Aventurine where he was peaking over. She was short, trying to look over the edge of it would have been harder than just vaulting it, so she trusted whatever judgement he had on the matter. Getting her caught would only risk the mission and, possibly, himself. She had to trust that he cared more about his own hide than that.

"Well," she was studying her nails, pressing back cuticles, the perfect picture of boredom in her asymmetrical uniform, "when he turns the corner why don't you just let us know?"

What hadn't been immediately obvious in the meeting was how terribly similar in size she and the irritating redhead had been. It was now, the both of them standing beside the wall while their taller third took the initiative to peek over it.

There was an authoritative air about him that the super wasn't entirely sure he'd earned the right to be exercising, but at least for the moment she let it go, let him lead. confident that she could take charge of the situation should a need arise, but perfectly willing to cooperate and follow orders so long as things were running smoothly.

And she did hope things went smoothly. It would be nice to maintain a civil and friendly relationship with the young man that'd taken interest enough to talk to her in the meeting. There were only so many officers and senshi there she new, and having more than that tiny handful of tentative allies would be good.

It hadn't struck her until she'd powered up for this mission how very isolated she was here. She was used to her team being present for things of this nature.

Arms folded loosely over her chest the senshi looked up at Aventurine. "On your mark," she agreed, ready to advance forward.

Minium received a look, complete with crinkling brows and an almost deeply set frown. He wasn't used to sass, not like this anyway when flirting wasn't part of it. It made him trip over himself mentally, not able to come back with a quip fast enough like he might have usually.

It wasn't often that Aventurine felt out of his element, even though he would have been considered 'subordinate' to the super senshi with them, but this redhead was keeping him on his toes and it was almost jarring.

"They're gone," he stated, hoisting himself over the wall easily enough and down the other side. The lieutenant paused long enough to offer help to either woman if they needed it (though he suspected they didn't). "We should split up." It seemed like the most logical choice and he looked towards Ceriska as if he was seeking approval.

He wasn't, but he wanted her to feel like he was.

To Minium, well...he snubbed her. "Keep your pens close so we can get in contact easily," he suggested, though he thought it was the smartest idea. They didn't know what they were getting into after all.

Without another word, Aventurine separated from the women to take a gander, his steps quiet as he walked through the garden. Unfortunately, he found his thoughts wandering as he glanced over one of the placards.

Minium didn't let either of the other agents dampen her mood. While it wasn't pleased, it was content for the moment, with the promise of a mission looming before them. She paused only to make sure that the man was clear on the other side before she leaped, caught the edge, and hauled herself over. She was an acrobat by trade and she landed on the other side quietly, even for the wedged heels that her uniform had given her.

"Fine," was her only response to his suggestion. She had no problem splitting up and as she wandered, crouched low through the darkness, she felt herself drawn to the flowers nearby - particularly a pocket of roses that had butterflies hovering above them at this hour. How peculiar. As she stooped low next to them, she noticed they were making a strange pattern, a mimic of the roses themselves. Did this... mean something?

Very, very carefully she pulled her tablet free and raised it above the roses, trying her damnedest to get an angle that really showed off what she was seeing. Satisfied, she pressed the capture button - only to be shocked when she forgot to turn off the auto-flash.

"s**t," it was a low curse under her breath. The butterflies seemed displeased and, more than that, she saw the flashlight of the guard turning in her direction. She sank low, slipping the tablet back into her subspace pocket, and tried to become one with the shadows.

Maybe she could just... sneak away?

When the coast was clear the petite senshi vaulted the wall with an easy effort, landing on the other side with barely a noise of impact from slippered feet. She was on high alert, but ears and eyes strained for any odd noises or the sudden swivel of a flashlight in their direction, but nothing stirred on this side of the wall.

At the suggested split she nodded, lips tugging up on one side in a small smile as she flipped the endless lengths of silver hair back over her shoulder and headed off away from the other two. Staying with Aventurine would have been fine with her, but the other lieutenant she wasn't sure she trusted yet.

On her own she only had to worry about herself.

This place wasn't called the Rose Garden without good reason. As Ceraskia walked she was surrounded on both sides with blooms of every size, shape, and color. They were beautiful, it smelled lovely if a little overwhelming, but she wasn't finding any sign of senshi or anything else that could have helped them .

She clucked her tongue in disappointment as she kept moving.

It would have been nice to spend more time with either of the woman in his company, though Aventurine thought that the corrupt would be easier to...'woo'. There would be time for that later, right now he couldn't stop and smell the roses. They were trying to suss out information or senshi. Either way...as tempting as it was to canoodle, Zircon had already given him two warnings before he had sent out and he was going to be on his 'best' behavior.

Which meant focusing at the task at hand. Or trying anyway.

He wasn't off to a good start.

"Oi! Who's there?"

His head snapped up and he ducked behind one of the bushes right as a flashlight illuminated the area he had just been standing in.

Weighing his choices, Aventurine did what he thought was most suitable, he neutralized the guard, popping up behind him and using large hands to prevent the guard from breathing and when he stopped struggling he dropped back down and hid him among the flowers.

It wasn't the best plan, but it was what he had.

The redhead backed slowly away from the guard and turned, slipping away down a side path. For a brief, blissful moment she thought she was going to get away without causing any more alarm than she had already - but then she took another turn and a flashlight illuminated her asymmetrical uniform.

"s**t," it was a hiss under her breath.

"Oi! Who's there?"

Both of her hands went up in a representation of harmlessness and a smile spread across her charming face. She straightened, put a lean in her hip, and tried to make the guy's eyes focus on her own-

"Sorry, sorry. I was just here to look at the flowers, you know? Have you ever just, really wanted something so badly that you couldn't help yourself?"

She was staring at him beneath a rim of lashes; London had to look up at nearly everyone. Flirty and distracting as she was, she was hoping that the other insufferable lieutenant was somewhere nearby. Would he be able to rescue her? Would he even care to? What about that Senshi? She wanted to look around her for ways to evade the guard but she didn't want to seem too obvious when he had his light trained on her.

Ceraskia stiffened when a voice boomed out into the night, not terribly loud in reality, but it felt thunderous when you were attempting to creep about in silence. Without even seeing the source she knew it was one of the guards, and the girl could have assumed whatever had caught the man's attention had been something or someone other than her two teammates, but she didn't feel like she had the luxury to assume such things.

Then, as she started heading back the way she'd come she heard another shout, a different voice this time, not quite in the same area but with the same authoritative air. The dancer cursed softly under her breath as she shifted her direction just slightly.

She'd only heard the one shout initially, then no further commotion from there, but as she neared the second she heard another voice, one of the lieutenants. It had her moving more swiftly, silent save for the faintest hiss of her hair brushing the ground as she moved up behind the guard.

She could see the small agent around the darker bulk of the guard, and she held a finger up to her lips as she caught and held her gaze. Then, as she crept forward, she lifted that hand until delicate fingers hovered over his back. Siphoning energy from the big man as quickly as she was able to, hoping to drive him quietly to his knees.

The guard flashed his light on Minimum, eyes narrowed as she spoke.

"You can do that during business hours," he barked, already reaching for his radio, presumably to call for back up. "You're tresss--" He cut off abruptly, swaying on his feet before his knees buckled.

"What in bloody--" Words slurred together and the guard managed to get a hold of his radio before he fell forward completely.

((Both guards have been neutralized! You may leave the body or move it, but you may proceed to step 3!))

Finding himself growing impatient, Aventurine pulled out his tablet to get in contact with the girls after emerging from his hiding spot.

"Ran into a guard," he stated, sparing the half hidden body a glance. "We should regroup." Fingers tapped the base of the pen before he decided on a location.

"There's a fountain near the turnstiles, let's meet there." He paused, in case one of the girls had a better meeting spot before he started his trek across the gardens.

Irritation had settled between his shoulders, his conversation with Suri a prickling thought in the back of his head. They hadn't been distracted, not by each other anyway, but he still wasn't at his best and he could only imagine how his general would react once they filled out the report, assuming things continued to go as they were.

"Thanks," Minium mumbled as the guard finally sagged and collapsed into a heap between them. It was a little begrudging, if only because of the stinkface that the Senshi had given her before, but she was truly glad it had ended quickly and without real issue. She offered a very weak smile, then produced her tablet to look at the hurried message from the other lieutenant.

Well, at least he had ******** up too.

"C'mon, we should go find that hot head."

She waited until Cera was moving before she turned and headed for the destination spot. By the time she got there, a smile was pulling her lips and she was visibly relaxed, stretching her arms over her head like it had been no trouble at all. Sure, Cera had saved her a**, but as long as the other woman didn't rat her out then Aventurine could keep right on thinking he was the only idiot here.

"What a waste of time," she sighed, right before light flashed in her face.

The burning sensation was immediate and painful, made more so by all of the bare skin she had showing. Parts of her uniform singed, filling her nose with the stink of burning fabric and little puffs of smoke curling up into the night air, but most of the attack landed on her skin - welts rose and she sagged a little. It was hard not to close her eyes and curl into herself.

"Where.. the hell are they?"

The weighted hula hoop was in her hand in a second, as much for her own comfort as it was useful.

Maybe it was the bodies that were left behind and the civilians left hurt or carelessness but somehow, the group of agents find themselves surrounded. Well, they're evenly numbered, from who they can see anyway but they're suddenly aware of the energy signatures that have flared to life around them.

Having been unable to detect them before you suspect that there is a cat somewhere...

Regardless, you better prepare for a fight now that they've thrown the first attack!

Eternal Remit has 40HP (and uses the same dice mechs as the General/Eternal level) - - If Dae gets a total of 8 or higher they can use Remit's Eternal Attack ONCE and targeted players must subtract an additional -2 for one round! (Can effect all agents in this Mission)
Sailor Simoom (Lit) has 25 HP (and uses the same dice mechs as the Lieutenant/Basic Level)
Eternal Rose (played by Nux) has 40HP (and uses the same dice mechs as the General/Eternal level)
??? (Nux) has ??? HP (There is ONE additional aura in the Rose Garden but you can't find them, yet!)

Quote:
Battle Mechanics:

  • Civilian: 15 HP // R2D4 - 2 (0 or negatives are misses)
  • Lieutenant/Basic: 20HP // R2D6 - 4 (0 or negatives are misses)
  • Captain/Super: 25HP // R2D8 - 6 (0 or negatives are misses)
  • General/Eternal: 30HP // R2D10 - 8 (0 or negatives are misses)

As they have the advantage of the ambush, all WM senshi get to roll first!

All Agents must -5HP from their total HP to start!

You MUST wait for all parties involved to respond before you can attack or roll again! This means no double rolls!

Posts MUST be filled out before you can roll or respond!

If ANYONE hits 0hp, they must quote me!

Please specify who you’re attacking!

Please keep track of your HP and attack damage at the top of your post.

HP: 40
DMG: 18 - 8 = 10 to Minium

None of this was good. Absolutely none of this was good. Unnecessary bodies, groups of enemies -- Remit knew she was paranoid already, but with good reason, and every day it seemed like she had even more reason for it.

At least the advantage seemed weighted towards them here, but -- you never knew. She sized up her enemies, one by one; a woman and a man, maybe of equal (and little) strength, and another woman - stronger? - in impractical dress, feathers and heavy hair -- no kind of uniform she recognized, but that meant little. Okay. Okay. They had this. Remit didn't know what that woman was, exactly, but that just made Feathers the biggest target; or it would have, if she wasn't more worried about the Lieutenants running and calling for help than she was a little bit of mystery. She had Rose and Simoom at her back, after all.

"Don't let any of them run - " half-a-command to her allies, and she was diving at the golden-eyed woman with a lashing kick aimed at her bare midriff.
