MISSION 006 - THE ROSE GARDEN

Location:The most picturesque wing of the Witzend Grand Arboretum, the Carroll Memorial Rose Gardens are world-renowned for their antiquated elegance and charm. In preparation for the Arboretum’s annual Rose Bloom Festival in June, a team of officers had been testing an energy draining operation with tiny youma in the turnstiles, siphoning tiny orbs from each guest. However, the latest reports indicate that the youma are going missing just as fast as they’re being installed, and the local agents are scratching their heads. Could this be the result of senshi activity in the area? The local branch has asked for volunteer officers to take part in an overnight watch of the area, just in case.

Requirements: 2 - 4 Agents, Must Be Powered, No Stage Limitations

Debriefing: The Arboretum is privately owned and operated, one of a few landmarks that exist outside of Negaverse control. Agents taking part in this mission must do so with utmost discretion and stealth--the Witzend Branch would prefer not to deal with hushing a PR scandal about mysterious officers sneaking around at night.

♠️STEP ONE:

The ticket booths have closed, the last of the groundskeepers have left. With no one else in the arboretum, the gardens are hushed into the whispers of insects and bats in the evening air. Some find it comforting; others unnerving.

All players must roll 1d6 to investigate the area:

    Quote:
1 - Did you know that the arboretum houses over 100 breeds of rose, in every color of the rainbow? You discover that reading one of the garden placards, but don’t see any sign of senshi. Focus! (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
2 - Stop and smell the roses! As you walk through the garden you find yourself distracted by the array of rose. The area you find yourself in is filled with white roses. They stretch as far as you can see. There is one rose that looks out of place. It's a dark red, almost like--- When you touch it, you discover that the coloring comes off. Has someone been trying to paint these white roses red? You're too distracted, but you make note of the oddity anyway. (On your next roll, roll 2d6 and take the lower of the two scores.)
3 - You come across a pocket of roses that are surrounded by teal colored butterflies. If you stare long enough, you start to notice that they're forming their own rose pattern on top of the roses. It's peculiar, so you use your tablet to take a picture. For some reason the flash goes off and you've found yourself attracting the attention of one of the security guards. (Do not roll in step two, you must respond to #2.)
4 - There's a frog on one of the fountains you pass. It croaks loud enough to get your attention and you take a moment to observe it. Several minutes pass before it hops away, to your dismay what felt like a handful of minutes has actually been almost fifteen! You need to get it together before someone notices you! (-3 from your next roll)
5 - It looks like some of the turnstiles have soot on them, almost like scorch marks. That alone wouldn’t be cause for concern, but when you step back, it looks like the soot was imprinted in a series of heart patterns. A Captain or higher will be able to recognize these marks as the residue of senshi magic.
6 - Most of the arboretum is considered too ‘historic’ to install security cameras. However, you notice there’s a camera inside the gift shop that just happens to be facing the turnstiles from inside. A quick review of the footage shows blurry figures arrive at the gates two nights ago, followed by a blinding flash of light. Classic senshi activity. (Add +2 to your next roll)

♠️STEP TWO:

    Each player must roll 1d6:

    Quote:
1 - You find nothing but the sounds of crickets, the running water of the fountains. The wait is starting to test your patience.
2 - You round a corner and are caught by a flash of light. Someone gasps, then shouts, “Oi! Who’s there?” You’ve been found by a security guard roaming the grounds--do you neutralize the witness or attempt to negotiate (Quote Nuxaz)?
3 - Something rustles in the bushes--and a rabbit hops out, sniffing the air before it retreats into the night. It’ll take a few moments for your heart rate to settle, but otherwise you’re okay.
4 - There appears to be a trail of footprints pressed into the grass of the gardens that seem fresh. One of them looks a little singed, something akin to a burned heart damaging the grass. The footprints are too dainty to be the security guard you've seen around. You follow them.
5 - You're distracted by a particularly beautifully blooming rose. When you reach out to touch it, you p***k a finger on a thorn you were too careless to notice. It stings and you feel a little woozy. (Subtract 3 from any combat rolls.)
6 - You hear footsteps and duck into the shadows--it sounds like there are young voices across the garden, and they’re having the most interesting conversation…(Quote Nuxaz for a snippet)

You must resolve the first Stage Two encounter before proceeding to the next player’s, until all players have rolled. Then you may regroup and move to Stage Three (Quote Nuxaz).

♠️STEP THREE:

You feel it, the faintest flicker at the edge of your senses, and then a glimmer--there’s an Order aura nearby.

One player must R1d4. Modify your roll by the following:

    Quote:
If a third-stage or higher character is present as part of your party, subtract one (does not stack).
If a guardian cat is present as part of your party, add one (does not stack).
If a character neutralized the security guard, subtract one.
If a character correctly identified evidence of a senshi presence (5/6 in stage one, 4 in stage 2), add one. (This effect stacks--so two pieces of evidence means +2)

    Final Results:
    Quote:
1 - Maybe it was a powerful aura tipping them off, or a body left strewn and unattended, but the senshi team have been alerted to your presence and have come prepared. You all feel a flash of light and a burning sensation on your clothes and skin as you’re caught in the ambush of a senshi attack, leaving behind little hearts singed all over your bodies. (Quote Nuxaz to engage! Everyone loses 5 HP to start).
2 - The auras linger for a moment, and then fade into the night. No one takes the bait tonight, and you go home empty-handed. (This mission has failed--file a report, this mission may be repeated another night)
3 - You wait in silence, and eventually you’re rewarded--a team of sailor scouts approach the turnstiles, cautious and ready for a fight. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!)
4 - From the depths of the garden comes a lone figure, a sailor scout cut off from the rest of their group. It looks like they’ve chosen to divide and conquer this evening, which leaves them...vulnerable. (Quote Nuxaz to engage!).

During the day it was likely so romantic and even in the dark, Tantalite found the scent of flowers pleasant. Pleasant, despite the almost eerie atmosphere of the dark silhouettes of bushes and pillars and really Metallia-only-knows what else. But that also meant she had the place to herself and one of the very few agents she would have trusted to have her back.

"I wonder if we'll have a chance to go during the day," she asked quietly to her companion as she took a moment to soak it all in. Tantalite wasn't going to rush things too quickly. They had far too much to get done to lollygag for long, but if there was a chance they'd not get to see it all how it was meant to be seen, well....

for completely professional reasons, she wanted to take a minute with him.

Their mission seemed simple enough, and Carnelian had read and reread the details over and over. So... their youma had been destroyed multiple times? It certainly sounded like senshi were blame. As the pair made their way to the arboretum, Carnelian noted he didn't feel anything unusual. Tantalite's musing about the beauty of the scene during the day brought a smile to his face.

Offering his arm to the Captain, the redhead swallowed the nervousness building in his chest. Chase had high expectations of the entire team on the mission, so they best be returning with results.

Which means they shouldn't get distracted.

"Well, I don't feel anything unusual yet... but with both of our auras, one would think they'd be smart enough to stay away..." He was fully prepared to hurl magic if he had to, but this mission called for stealth. And Carnelian wasn't sure he was skilled in such a thing.

He waited for Tantalite to be ready before dropping into the garden to begin investigating...

The turnstiles were where the youma were previously installed, according to the mission briefing. Carnelian thought it pertinent to start the investigation there. Keeping his eyes peeled for the sudden appearance of security or senshi presence. His voice was low when green eyes narrowed on some odd markings on the turnstiles.

"...Tantalite," he murmured, "...these look scorched. Senshi magic, I think."

Tantalite wrapped her arm around Carnelian's before they dropped. Purely for the sake of her own safety, of course.

It wasn't a large drop, but the woosh of air still felt enough to trigger her need to brace herself for something to break every time, squeezing tighter onto the corrupt on impact. It barely jostled her knees, but she held on for a moment longer before stepping from his side to begin her own investigation.

"Scorched?" Tantalite took a moment to peer over his shoulder, then stepped closer to take an even closer look at what Carnelian had pointed out. "Definitely looks like Senshi Magic. Any ideas on what type?" she inquired, stepping away as she followed visually along a path of similar magical residue.

Pach he sucks.

Nuxaz
Carnelian blames Tanta for being pretty. Pretty distracting. He's draining the guard and leaving him somewhere safe to nap. Because he's a huge stealth failure, apparently.

"Probably those garbage heat-lasers I've seen other senshi have. They must have everything to do with the disappearance of the youma installed here in the turnstiles. The problem is, where are they?" And do they have any more of those stupid lasers? Really, he was an eternal at this point, so what reason did he have to be scared?

Well, a senshi blasting him in the face would put a serious dent in his ability to flirt with Tantalite be of use as a charismatic shepherd of the Negaverse, and--

"OI. Wot's goin' on out heah?"

Oh no, he was too loud?

Carnelian panicked, not thinking there would be a security guard on duty. When he really thought about it, duh, why wouldn't there be a security guard on duty!? Decked out in black and red in a trench coat that would only make him fit in with metalheads and the goth crowd, pretending to be a guard of some kind was completely out of the question. Instead, the eternal sprinted to the guard and clamped a hand over the man's mouth to drain him in silence.

"Shhh... I'm very sorry." he murmured, easing the man down to the ground softly. He'd move the guard to a safe location as soon as he could. "We have important business to attend to."

"What the bloody---"

Whatever the security guard was going to say was lost because suddenly he was without energy. His entire body sagging as the eternal set him down.

Sure, he was out of the way but if anyone else were to come across him, they'd find themselves very...very suspicious.

Either way, Carnelian manages to neutralize the guard without too much of a scene. (Yet).

Tantalite frowned as Carnelian offered his suggestion to the source of all of the trouble. "Maybe. What gets me is if they're being consistent in finding stuff, they're either here frequently, or -"

She cut off as light shone over him, barely able to move as Carnelian dove in to neutralize the target. For a moment, she looked the guard over, frowning. "I wonder if there's a better place to leave him - less in the open," she suggested. Tantalite took a quick look around the immediate area to make sure she hadn't missed any other guards before moving further into the area.

Half to look for evidence, half to see if they could prop the guard up somewhere that would make it less obvious they'd been there. But it was quiet. She didn't like it.

((Carnelian failed them. Womp womp.))

In the panic after subduing the guard (and attempting to save face in front of the Captain - he was an eternal after all, and one would think he'd have been better at this by now), Carnelian's supernatural senses had flickered for just a moment. He could have sworn he'd felt something, but by the time he'd had the presence of mind to focus on it... it was gone.

With a sigh, the redhead turned back to the Captain.

"Well... it seems like this evening is a bust of sorts. Care for a stroll around the garden before heading back to the hotel~?"

It had been there for a moment, then it was gone in the time it took her to react to it. That left the two of them, and the passed out guard.

Tantalite sighed - almost in unison with Carnelian as she returned to his side. "Well. We may as well spend a little bit more time here," she agreed with his suggestion, since it seemed they were out of the woods for the night. "Then we can go back to the Hotel and make our report."

She paused, then leaned in closer to him to continue their little night walk. Tantalite would make sure he looked good in the report.
