He knew it wasn't the best of ideas, he knew how packed the place could get around this time of day, but Rhona had wanted to come. He'd warned her, on the way over, about how packed the grocery store was likely to be. It wasn't as bad as it could get, it wasn't Friday or a weekend, but it was still midday which meant the likelihood of the place being packed - was high.

Approaching the place, already with a shopping cart, Xi-Wang stopped to get some fruits from the outside display. He liked to get fruits for the apartment so started checking them over and bagging them. It was when he got to some Rhona might not know that he started to explain what he was getting, and giving an idea of the flavor they each had.

"If you want anything just grab it. The trips on me. So if you want to try things feel free to." He didn't mind paying for it. He made enough money to afford the food he bought, and then some, since the housing wasn't an issue and neither were the bills. He didn't worry about a lot money wise - it was nice. Once the fruits outside were picked it was just a matter of getting inside and figuring out where to go first, and how to get there.

Of course, Xi had warned her and of course Rhona had thought he was exaggerating. It was a grocery store. Target never got that bad, why should this be any different. If anything, she expected it to be less busy than other chain grocery stores because of how niche it seemed to be.

She was wrong.

She'd only ever seen this many people in a supermarket during black friday, and even then it was on those youtube video compilations. Someone bumped into her and then shouted something in a language that she didn't understand, but she took to be very rude by the cadence of the voice. She would have shot something equally scathing back, but the offender melted into the crowd and vanished. And then in her search for the offender, Rhona had lost track of where she was and sidestepped into some old lady's cart. She also shouted angrily at her, and in her surprise, all Rhona could do was apologize and skitter away, back to Xi, where she wrapped her slender fingers around his bicep to ensure that she wouldn't get lost in the crowd.

"Try something," she parrotted stupidly, blinking down at the fruit before her. Half of it she recognized -- apples, oranges, pears -- but the other half almost seemed alien. She palmed one fruit which was colored like a kiwi, but looked a bit like a brillo pad. She raised it to her nose to see if she couldn't detect was it was from the scent, but she smelled nothing.

"Hey Xi, what's this," she asked, pressing herself against the fruit stands to keep out of the way.

He wasn't surprised by the crowd, he was just glad it wasn't worse, but Rhona of course seemed to have gotten into some trouble with all the people. Smiling down at her he moved to put her on his other side so she could also hold onto the cart. Before he could do that however, before he could complete the transferring of her to his other side, she had picked up a fruit. It was one he knew...and had never tried 0- for good reason.

"That's durian fruit....some say it's good...some dislike it. But almost everyone will agree about the smell. It's strong and not at all good, the smell that is. I've heard it has a creamy consistency inside." He wouldn't tell her not to get it, if she wanted to try it he'd pay for it. He also might just hide out in her bathroom, or elsewhere, when she opened it.

"If you want to try it we can pick it up." And he'd warn Liam about it, it wouldn't be nice to let the other find out about it by the smell.

At the warning of the smell, Rhona placed the fruit back down gently, as though disturbing the fruit too much might set it off.

"I feel like if the smell is that bad, maybe I should stay away from it. Fruit should be sweet and smell good."

She nodded with finality and did as she was directed, placing a hand on the cart so that she would at the very least be out of the way.

"I do remember you letting me try this, though," she said, reaching for the Asian pears. "You had boiled it right? No... poached it! There were these red berries in the middle -- It was when you got promoted! Remember?" She remembered. Of course, she did. She remembered every single one of his milestones, and probably would forever. Just like she remembered Chione's and Crocus', and would remember Melpomene's now. Just like she hoped to remember Kibirevs.

"I remember liking it. Could you teach me how to make them? Other than those... I mean I don't know... what should a beginner have for fruit? Like... what are staples?"

"You can stay away if you want. Like I said - some people love it and say it's great. King of fruits I think I've heard it called." Shrugging a bit, he didn't agree with that. He liked other fruits, ones which smelled as good as they tasted. "Yeah, it's steamed but yeah. It has rock sugar in it and fruit." Nodding his head as pointed towards the bags.

"You can get a few of the pears if you want. They are good - of course I can teach you. it's simple really...something most mothers make for their children when they aren't feeling well - even my mother did it." Which spoke volumes, at least to him it did.

"Hmm...other staples....lychee is one and dragon fruit - star fruit also! And..." Oh there were several he could think of, ones he needed to pick up for the house. Moving away to grab bags, rather than waiting on Rhona, he went to show her the fruits he mentioned. "There are so many....you're going to wind up with a large fruit bowl of new fruits to try....that's ok, right?"
PostPosted: Sat Mar 02, 2019 11:37 pm

The fact that Xi's mother ever did anything kind for him astonished Rhona. But at least now she knew what to make for him should he ever come to her feeling poorly. Physically or otherwise. If nothing else, she could steam a pear, right? And she already knew how to make rice, even if it was in a cooker. That was two things down already! How hard could the rest really be?

Very, Rhona soon realized the strange fruits Xi was currently piling into his cart. Strange red fruits that looked more like sea creatures than fruit, what looked like elongated apples, and something that was shaped like a cherry tomato but had the skin and coloring of a citrus fruit. Rhona's mouth hung open as she watched the cart fill up, and they were only at the fruit stands.

"I guess I won't need to go grocery shopping myself for a few weeks," she offered weakly, somewhat amazed at the amount of fruit that existed outside her understanding.

"Okay," she finally laughed as Xi asked about the amount of fruit they were getting. "Honey, a plentiful fruit bowl is more than okay! There's nothing better for a centerpiece in my mind. You have my complete trust, Xi. Whatever you say, I'll go along with. She could do a fruit plate for breakfast tomorrow and taste them all with Liam. That would be nice with a cup of tea...

"I can't imagine what it's going to be like if the rest of the store is like this though! There are so many options!"

"That's only if you like everything we get here. Otherwise you'll still need to do some shopping...you might anyway though - for normal things." Things she was used to and things Liam was more likely to enjoy as well. "A lot of these fruits, save for maybe...three or four, you won't see outside of an asian super market...unless the supermarket is rather special and puts a lot into this section of their store." He'd never seen some of these fruits in a normal supermarket - never. They were just uncommon and something most people would never purchase. But here...where there were people who knew and loved these fruits, who had grown up with them, they sold - fast.

"It's food that to people like me are just...part of every day life. When I grew up, before my mother started to act strange, my everyday meals were not the same as you or other people. People try Chinese food...or asian food. But they only try the popular things...the things they see in the normal grocery store. Not many venture to these stores...they aren't familiar with things and can't read the writing. Plus some things are very strange and just a turn off." Based on looks alone. He could understand it, he did the same with foods as well.

"It's all different styles of cooking and flavor profiles...didn't rules I guess." So they didn't know what to cook with for different things...it was confusing.

"Ok." Fruits bagged, some for Rhona and Liam and some for himself and the two he lived with, he tapped his food lightly. "Sauces next I think...since that's what brought us here really. Then we can try drinks if you want? Frozen things last."

Someone stepped on her foot, but by now Rhona knew better than the call out or give dirty looks. Instead, all she did was wince quietly and shift her weight, wondering if maybe the aggression she was experiencing wasn't actually just confirming that it wasn't just that she felt out of place here. Looking around, she was the only person who looked... well like her. She drew closer to Xi as though he might protect her from the laughter that definitely wasn't directed at her but how did she know that for sure?

"Sauces, right... do I need something to put the sauces on? Like noodles of some kind? I'd offer to get them myself at the supermarket, but something tells me those packs of dried udon are no good, huh?" She laughed despite herself, and perhaps a little too forcefully as she tried not to think about how she stuck out in the crowd. How was she ever going to come here alone?

"But I mean rice... how different can rice be from one place to the next, right?"

Right?

"Different sauces for different things. Black vinegar normally is used for dipping dumplings...some, like me, also add soy sauce to it. You have soy sauce used for soups and others used for other purposes. You have what's used for barbecue and then what's used in hot pot. It's all different." But he'd help her and teach her, today was the first of many lessons.

"Those noodles would work actually." Shrugging a bit as looked down at the other. She seemed off and maybe nervous as well? Somehow she was out of sorts...and not her usual self. "You know you don't need, and shouldn't be, uncomfortable here. Do you know how many people, fans of anime and asian culture, come to these places? Don't let it get to you." Hoping to offer some comfort to the other, she seemed to really need it. "Fresh noodles are best and we'll get some. You can also get the ones at your grocery store also. We can try both." See what she liked best, plus it never hurt to have back up.

"Rice...rice grows in seasons for the different types. The ones here we know are fresher...or at least fresher than what they sell normally at the grocery store. Because these are sold faster and the types of rice - where they are from. Not that rice lasts long...at least not in Nischal's home." Since he ate a lot of it, it was something of a comfort food...and a simple little thing for when he just wanted a small bite to eat and not a meal.

"Rice is also different inn length of grain...compared to what most of what the other grocery stores have." Smiling he poked the others cheek, hoping to lighten the mood as much as he could. "You'll learn and I'll help you the whole way."

Rhona blinked as Xi comforted her, once again taken aback by how much he'd grown. After a moment, she smiled and squeezed his elbow. He was right, she had no reason to be nervous. It was probably Micah sneaking back into her mind and fraying her nerves. How she managed to sneak back in when Rhona had worked so hard to bury her would always be beyond Rhona's ability to understand. But she anchored herself to the feeling of Xi's elbow in her hand and smiled after a moment.

"Yeah, it's just... Micah."

Another moment as Rhona put herself back together before she took a deep breath and pushed all of the sounds to the back of her mind. Rice. Right.

"I thought rice was like other dried foods, like pasta. There wasn't really a 'fresh'... but I guess dried herbs expire, so..." Really, the more she thought about it, and the more Xi explained, the more it felt... familiar. The fruits really weren't that different, rice expired like herbs, and there were different sauces just like condiments. She wouldn't put ketchup on spaghetti, so she assumed it was the same thing.

"Thanks, Xi. for bringing me here and... being you." She bumped into her shoulder and smiled up at him warmly.

"Oh...that's fine." He understood when she mentioned Micah. He'd known Rhona long enough that it was impossible for him not to know, and understand. "You ok now?" Worried for her, knowing such a thing could throw her a bit off balance, he kept her close and held onto her.

"Exactly...similar to that I suppose. But here rices come into season and that's when they are harvested and sold. So different rice for different seasons....means fresh and hasn't been sitting waiting to be sent to stores to be sold. My sister." Well half sister really. "Says there is a place near her home that sells rice and you have to remove the husk there - they do it for a small extra fee. You can pick whatever rice you want that they have in stock." One day he'd go and visit...he just didn't know when. But he did want to meet his half sister and his father, he really wanted to meet them, and his grandparents. The idea of family was still new to him and something so warming and surprising.

Smiling he leaned down to rest his cheek to the top of Rhona's curly hair. "I'll always be me - you know that." Even if he grew up and gained his freedom, and became himself, he would always be him. There were some things he'd never stop being...habits he'd never lose. "You know...if it wasn't for you...and Jet and for the one who brought me in...I'd never be most of what I am now - who I am now." Did he even want to guess how, and who, he'd be now? He had them all to thank as well, and Nischal and Jason, they'd helped him so much and given him even more.

"Now, lets get some rice. Maybe two types? We can split the bags since they're a bit large if you want."
PostPosted: Sun Mar 17, 2019 11:33 pm

Rhona nodded when she was asked after and leaned into Xi's cheek against her head. She mirrored his sentiment, the only difference is that she knew exactly where she would be were it not for the court. And she wagered that, for all she had told Xi about what she used to be, he knew too.

Dead.

Rhona took a deep breath, sighing back out, "I don't know who I'd be without you. It's a good thing we'll never have to know." In truth, Rhona wondered if she would be as nurturing had Xi not opened up that part of herself. She couldn't remember feeling this way about anyone before... and she couldn't imagine herself without that part of herself.

Xi changed the subject, thankfully, just in time.

"Yeah, two types sounds great! Do I need to prepare them a certian way or just like I normally do in the rice cooker?"

At least rice was something she could handle. Rice was old hat. She understood rice.

To some extent.

"Without me? You have the rest of the court. They wouldn't let you fall - we're family." Even if he didn't know every member he still called them all family. While she would have had the court, even if not him, he'd still be trying to separate and avoid his mother...to get out from under her control. He wouldn't be who he was now, he owed a lot to his court.

It was a good thing that neither of them would have to find out what would be if things were different. Things were as they were and they were good - life was good now.

"Rice cooker is the normal way - yeah. That's how it's made. Rice is rice...unless it's plastic but rice is rice and treated the same." Smiling a** he pet her hair gently. "Come on, two bags. I'll let you pick them."

PostPosted: Fri Mar 22, 2019 11:00 pm

"I dunno, Xi," Rhona sighed, doing as she was told and grabbing two bags of rice. "I wasn't... like this... before you. I mean like... maternal. I was still trying really hard to find out who I was. I was drinking a lot, just kind of... surviving. Meeting you uncovered a part of me that I didn't know existed. It -- and you -- gave me a purpose again."

She had said it very casually, but the weight of her words settled in her gut like a stone. She'd never really thought about it before, but now that she was, Rhona was certain what she had said was true.

"I might not have ever powered up again had I not met you. Might not have seen the point."

She shrugged as she plopped the rice into the cart like it didn't matter but it did. It mattered a lot. She tried to keep it from her face, and in so doing latched on to Xi talking about how to cook rice. Good, then she was doing the rice cooker right too. Rhona did, however, leave out the use of milk and sugar to make a poor facsimile of rice pudding. She knew Xi wouldn't look down on her for it, but she couldn't bring herself to tell him either.

"Anyway, what else?"

Pausing he turned his dark eyes onto Rhona. "So wait...you weren't so big in the family...till me?" That didn't sound like the Rhona he knew, not at all, had he really made that much of a difference in her? But how? He was just..well him...and he wasn't that worth it, at least he didn't think so. "So I made you into who you are now? I can't picture you as anything else...or that I did this." He said gesturing to her. He really didnn't think himself important enough to make such a change in a person.

"I-I don't know how I caused such a change. I was just some new person - all lost and needy. I still don't know why you took me in....and that I guess is why I didn't think you were anything different from what I've always seen." It was all he'd known of her and to think she'd been anything different right before him...it was impossible to believe and yet Rhona was telling him as much. She had done so much for him though. She was one of the reasons he had any confidence and part of why he found the court to be his home - his family. Jett and her. They were the first to care for him and help him and give him a foundation from which to live on his own - independently.

"I guess we helped each other. And now I get to help you more." Smiling he ruffled her curly hair.

"Next up...sauces? Or do you want frozen foods? They have some good dumplings...though you could learn to make your own. Frozen ones are good in a pinch. I even have frozen ones, from here, at home that I make in a rush." It was easier and they really weren't bad either, some were rather good even.

"I think after this....when we go for dim sum we can talk more - about the personal things. I think we should."
