She was late, and she knew it. But…she had been in the shower when Kekipi had sent the text message, and her hair took a ridiculous time to dry…though when she saw the invitation to meet him—albeit powered…she was excited.
He had been so busy lately, and she was sure that this was going to be a late Valentines date, or perhaps a late celebration of her birthday…regardless, she was excited and when she had read the message, had hurried to get ready.
By the time she reached the meeting place, she was nearly half an hour late, and she looked around, almost nervously. “Hau?” Her voice was loud in the quiet of the cold night, and when she finally felt the other—stronger chaos aura, she hurried over, excited and happy that he hadn’t yet left her.
“I’m so sorry that I’m late, your message got to me when I was in the shower and I didn’t even look until…un…til…”
Her hurried steps slowed as she took in his new appearance.
He was…broken. Cracked everywhere like some shattered china doll that had been poorly repaired and…and she didn’t know how to take it.
It was frightening, to say the least.
“Um…That’s…that’s a new…a new look.”

Haumea hadn't been sure of this course of action, but once the text had been sent, he'd tossed the phone aside, thinking that such things had no place in the Rift. Though he was hesitant of one of the few guaranteed ways to reach out to someone when they might not be powered up. He'd left a message on Sapphirine's tablet as well to cover all of his bases. This was a meeting that had to happen, much as he would have liked to spare her feelings.
So he'd selected the most out of the way spot he could think of and told her to meet him there. And as he waited, he'd marveled at the way he could seep the Chaos energy gently seeping from the cracks in his body. Simply beautiful...
He was distracted from his musings when he heard and felt Sapphirine approach. Glancing up, he saw her smile and step falter and felt what remained of his heart go out to her in pity. Yet she still tried to put on a brave face with her use of flippancy. Brave, beautiful little Sapphirine.
Well. No sense in beating about the bush. Though, given her reaction, Haumea wanted to make this as easy as possible on her. Stepping closer and reaching out to gently grasp her hand, he ventured a rusty smile.
"Yes, I suppose it is. Don't be afraid," he murmured, vaguely aware that the flower that he'd taken as a gift from Metallia was emitting a sweetly alluring scent. Well, maybe the smell would help distract Sapphirine. "The Tower works. I repaired it, little one. And everything I hoped to accomplish happened. As you can see."
A chuckle escaped the Ascendant, even as he noted that he could feel a sort of disconnect in his emotions. He certainly still cared deeply for Sapphirine, but there was something else there that kept his emotions at a strange distance. Still holding onto her hand, he studied it carefully, gently brushing his fingertips against her skin. The difference was remarkable.
And sad. But he'd known going into this that he would have to make sacrifices. But he should have realized he'd be forcing those sacrifices onto people who didn't deserve the consequences.
"Please don't be afraid, Saph. I'm still me. Just... how I was always meant to be. How we are ultimately meant to be when we serve Metallia. Just stay and talk to me. Please?"

She almost recoiled when he touched her, almost drew away. Almost jut turned to run screaming. This wasn’t her Haumea. This wasn’t…was this even real? Had he…had he become a youma? Was that what this was?
His words almost made her come back with a snappy retort, but as she drew in a breath to do so, she caught the scent of something…sweet.
Spring flowers? Already? It was quite early…
Sapphirine drew in another breath and felt herself relaxing and nodding to his words. Perhaps he was right. Perhaps she shouldn’t be afraid. This was…what they had wanted…wasn't it?
Her fingers curled almost absently around his and she nodded. “How we’re meant to be when we serve Lady Metallia? So I should become like this someday too?” Her eyes were on him, and her expression was rapt once again. She wanted to listen to more of what he said. Wanted to be close to him again.
It might not look like her Haumea anymore…but he had looked different—stupid—when he got the face tattoos too, and she had gotten used to it…she would just have to get used to the cracks…she could do that. Right?
Her fingers began to trace over the cracks in his hand and she hesitated.
“…Did it hurt?”

Glancing sharply down at her face before returning his attention to her hand threaded through his own, Haumea felt a wariness. She'd calmed far too quickly. He could see the tension had gone from her shoulders. Too fast. No one who saw someone they cared deeply about altered so drastically should be so calm. It wasn't normal.
What, and I am, I suppose?
Haumea felt the petals of the flower in his hair wave gently as his movements generated a tiny breeze. The flower? Was that the source of Saph's strange calm? He would have to test his theory, but later. Right now, he felt he owed his poor Saph an explanation.
"I am Ascended, Saph. Metallia tested me and I passed and she changed me. Whether you become like this or not is between you and Her."
He smiled a little at her last question. Funny how the concept of pain seemed so trivial to him now. But he had long ago determined to never lie.
"Excruciatingly so. But I think it was worth it."

Sapphirine nodded, swallowing hard. “Ascended. How…did she go about testing you?”
Why would you want to be hurt? Why was…all of this worth it that you’d want to be hurt? How could something being excruciating and you be proud of it?
The questions died in her mind and she swallowed.
“This is what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it? Because…you’ve been talking about…going to give everything to Metallia. You’re happy now, Hau? You’re honestly, truly happy with all of this…?”
She sighed. “…You still…want this of me?” The corrupt wasn’t sure at all now. She was still more than a little freaked out…but…it felt like those emotions were part of someone else. “You’ll help me…work towards it? I’m not good with pain.”

Distracting himself from her questions for a moment, Haumea studied Sapphirine s hand. It was so soft. His hands had once been this soft not so long ago. Well. Maybe not this soft. He'd been dreadful about remembering to moisturize. It had taken dreams and a perhaps-not-so-chance encounter with a corrupt who shared those same dreams, who had craved those dreams. Who had been willing to provide him with the harsh truth that he could never have become more than what he was if he'd held on to his humanity.
Listening to Sapphirine's questions, hearing the wavering emotion in her voice... As much as he wanted his visions to come to fruition, he was still far to close to the event that had changed him. If Sapphirine was ever to become like him, like Alkaid, she needed to come to that path and feel the calling on her own. If was not a thing he could force.
"To answer the least of your questions first, little one, She burned her way through my ancient homeworld's core using me as a conduit. My world was cleansed and claimed. As for what I want," Haumea paused and laid a cracked hand against her cheek. "I want you to decide this for yourself. I can guide and advise, but this is a thing you must choose for yourself. I think that were you to simply present yourself out of a sense of needing to please me, She would use you as an Example. I don't think you'd enjoy or survive the experience."
Hell, he had just barely survived. Had his will and desire to give everything to his Goddess wavered for even a moment, Metallia would have consumed him and left nothing for his charred bones upon the dias.
"This is something you must think long and hard over and decide on your own," he said softly. "This is not something that can simply be ordered of you."

Sapphirine let her eyes close when he reached out to place a hand on her cheek, and for a moment, she felt as though she would weep. He hadn’t answered anything. Or, if he did it wasn’t the answers that she wanted to hear…foolish answers. Empty answers.
Finally the corrupt looked up at him again and just shrugged. “I’m not asking you to order it of me. I just…wanted to know if you wanted it of me. If this is what I should start preparing for. Training for. That’s all.”
It had been. It had been what he wanted…and now that he had it…there was that horrible distance between them…and she didn’t know what to do or how to react.
“I can and I will work towards it if it is still your wish…if…you want us to be together…but…if not…I’ll figure it out on my own.” Sapphirine could feel her old rebellion creeping up again, could feel whatever resentment she had moving to lay once more across her shoulders like some tough mantle.
“I can do it on my own, and if you don’t want me to go down your path. I can find another.” It almost sounded like a threat, and the stubborn set of her jaw did nothing to counteract it. Though, the expression was softened by the sudden moisture that had collected in her eyes.

Looking perplexed and more than a little exasperated by her outburst, Haumea had to pause and silently remind himself than Sapphirine was not so durable as he now was. Shaking sense into her might cause actual damage now.
"Ever the brat," he murmured half-angrily and half-affectionately. Though he could tell that his affection was somehow distant. At one remove. How was he supposed to give her the answers she needed and wanted when they were such human concerns.
And Haumea had willingly and gleefully left his humanity behind.
And the only way he could think to demonstrate that fact was to seize her hand and lay it out flat over his chest. So she could feel the lack of a heartbeat, see the faint swirls of Chaos energy as it seeped from his cracked body.
"I am not going to lie to you just so you can have comforting answers, Saph," he said. "Of course I want you to some day reach this state. I want this for all Corrupted senshi. But I am also wise enough to know that some will never Ascend. They're still too close to their humanity and will never be able to leave it behind. They can't be forced into it or they'll fail the final test."
He paused and in an almost wistful voice continued, "You're still so human, Sapphirine. But I can not and will not ask you to shed that humanity if it means you becoming resentful or unhappy. Your whole heart must be willing and right now..."
His voice drifted off. Maybe some day she would be able to leave being human behind. But she had a life that he knew she enjoyed. She wasn't ready to give that up. And as inhuman as he was, he wasn't enough of a heartless beast to force that kind of change upon anyone. Not when the forcing had the potential to ruin everything that made Sapphirine burn so brightly.
"Everyone has their own path, little Saph. Asking you to travel mine would hurt you too badly. You have to find your own path to Ascension, if that is your destiny. And if it's not, I know that you will still shine so brightly in Metallia's service."
Bending slightly at the waist, he scraped his cracked and crystalline lips across her forehead in a kiss.
"Be as angry as you like with me, but this is something you have to think about and choose yourself. For yourself. You have to feel the call for yourself, Saphhirine."

This wasn’t her Haumea. This wasn’t her Haumea at all, and for a moment, Sapphirine thought that she would just pass out. Just die right here and now. But. For a moment she almost had the answer that she wanted…though perhaps…that was the whole issue.
Somehow…it felt as though Haumea could no longer focus on the simple…her…it wasn’t that he wanted her to do it because he wanted her beside him…Haumea wanted Sapphirine to ascend because she was a corrupt and that was what corrupts were supposed to do. The path that they should follow.
She drew away from him. Away from those cold, rock like lips. After a moment the corrupt shook her head and took a step backwards. “I think…I need to think about this for a while Hau…I…”
She reached up and rubbed at her eyes. “I’m sorry that I’m…I…”
With a shake of her head, the corrupt spun on her heal and ran. She couldn’t deal with this right now. Couldn’t deal with all of the fuss, all of the words running through her head. The shattering of her hopes like the shattering of his skin…
Her heart felt broken and she couldn’t quite reason with herself of how she would recover. She hadn’t realized that helping Haumea achieve his dream would cause the loss of him.
And she bitterly hated it.
