It was a shopping day, and Gabby was more than ready to fill her bags with whatever she set her heart to. A trip to the mall was always a good thing, and she was ready.

The art supply store was first, though she bought nothing on the first pass, rather she took her time to examine what it was that she might actually need. She didn’t quite want to purchase it first off because she tended to go for things that were a little too big to carry around comfortably but, it was always good to have a plan.

Next she went to the trinket store and blew a few hundred on the newest horse statues, finding one made out of crystal which caught the light in such a way that it just danced. It was money well spent.

Gabrielle shook her head so her short braids went back behind her shoulders and began making her way to the soap store when the sound of a piano made her pause. It was beautiful, and when she glanced around and saw the music store she hesitated and made her way inside.

She didn’t play anything, though she had always wanted to play the flute…

The shop seemed dark after the bright sunlit corridor of the mall and she blinked for a moment and then saw the boy who was playing the piano. Gabby moved softly, wondering if perhaps he was just pretending and maybe there was just a recording of some music playing but…when she managed to sneak behind him…he was really playing.

And making it look so easy.

She held her breath and just listened, caught in the spell of the music. It was so pretty, and honestly kind of magical.

His keyboard was old. It still did the job he needed it to do, but nothing compared to the sound of a real piano. Nothing could replicate that sound, the feel of the vibrating strings under his fingers and in his soul as he played.

Ilian wasn’t uncomfortable with people watching. He played at department stores during the holiday season part time, after all. So when a young woman with braided blonde hair seemed to be watching, he didn’t mind. He was just glad people weren’t telling him to stop, or to buy something or leave.

The piece he was playing ended on a soft note, and he sat for just a moment before turning to offer a warm smile to the young woman standing nearby.

“Sorry, were you waiting to try this?” he asked, carefully pushing the bench back so he could stand. He was wearing casual clothes. Jeans and a tee-shirt under a warm, corded sweater.

She was almost unhappy when the music ended and gave a soft, wistful sigh. “Ah. No. I have no talent when it comes to playing anything, though I think I’d like to try learning something. Someday.” Gabrielle returned the smile and took a step away, hesitating. “You didn’t have to stop. I was really enjoying hearing you play. And you make it look so effortless.”

The best musicians always did. It was almost as though they could just sense where to move their fingers and it was as though the instrument was nothing more than an extension of their own bodies.

It was wild.

“I’m an artist myself, but I enjoy the inspiration that comes from a piano. If…I were to ever really try for…” She gestured to the male and the piano. “You know, playing something. I’d want it to be a flute. They just seem so…interesting. And I love the airy sound that they make.”

Whoever invented instruments was amazing, and she hadn’t ever really thought about it all before. “I’m Gabrielle, but you can call me Gabby…how long have you been playing?”

Ilian showed the young woman a small but warm smile in response to her compliments. "Thank you. I was worried I might be bothering people by playing," he admitted, although he supposed he was probably overreacting, seeing as it was a music store.

"You could always try your hand at one. I believe the store rents instruments out, and there's plenty of online sites and apps that teach how to play," Ilian suggested, although he didn't mind if she was just voicing her ideals and not necessarily something she had time to invest in.

"Ilian," he introduced in return, before glancing back down at the piano. "How long…? Before I can remember. I was told I could play before I could walk. Probably an exaggeration, but it feels that way sometimes." There were times he felt more connected to playing music than the rest of the world.

"I take it you're a collector?" he asked, nodding to the bag she was carrying from the trinket store, recognizing the name and logo from having passed it by countless times. "Find anything good?"

“I mean, I could see you thinking that if all you were doing was playing chopsticks over and over as loud as you could! But you were playing beautifully...I hadn’t thought about renting a flute...that...that’s a good idea, honestly! Thank you!”

She’d try that. It was as good of a way to spend time anyway. “Oh! Yeah, there were some really pretty horses and I couldn’t just...not get them. Horses are my big passion. I’ve been riding since before I was born! I’m pretty sure my mom took me on rides when I was still floating around in the womb...aha. I mean, I ride too! Not just collect pretty things but…”

Rifling through the big, Gabby drew out one of the boxes, taking out the crystalline figurine and displaying it in her hand. “These will look so good in my room. I have a spot where the sun will hit them right around sunset and…” She gave a pleased sigh. “It’ll be a rainbow party, mark my words. But...yes! A horse collector!”

Ilian couldn’t help but laugh, if only because he could imagine that getting very exasperating for people having to listen to the small part of chopsticks that most knew.

“Did you know it’s actually written as a waltz? It’s not horrible, but I won’t make you suffer through it,” he promised, holding up his hands as though to indicate that he was unarmed.

She was cheerful, he would give her that. But there could always be complications. He hadn’t actually been looking to recruit anyone else, but the Negaverse could also be so dreary and. It could use a bit of brightness, just like how the crystalline figurine could reflect the sun.

“It feels good to be able to do something we were born to do,” he agreed. She had her passion, and he had his. Maybe that was what was making him think what if. “And I want others to be able to do what brings them happiness, too.”

The laugh brought a grin to Gabrielle’s face and she tossed her head, allowing the pathetic excuse of a braid to slip back over her shoulder. “A waltz? How did people...It doesn’t seem like it should be any kind of a waltz! More like a polka...not that I really have any idea what a polka sounds like but. It seems to fit Chopsticks better than a waltz!”

She shook her head, chuckling slightly. “I think so to! About feeling good when you’re born to do something. I want to figure out just what that is for me, but...I know I don’t need to know right away. I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough! The happiness bit though, I’m very good at seeking out what makes me happy!”

Gabby grinned again. “After all, your music did! And here I am, meeting a new acquaintance, much to my joy! Plus, I learned that Chopsticks was a waltz! It’s a day of absolute revelations!”

Ilian smiled at her, wondering if maybe, just maybe, she could help him. Could help a lot of people with her enthusiasm.

“Would you like to take a walk with me? I was about to get up and find a place to get coffee maybe. Just as a friend, I mean,” he quickly said, because he didn’t want her thinking he was trying to ask her out. He held up his hand to show that he wore a ring, just in case she needed visual proof.

“I wanted to ask you something, but this isn’t really a good place. But you seem like the kind of person that could help me. But I don’t want you to feel pressured. And this isn’t some pyramid scheme,” he added with a quick laugh and made a face because those were the worst.

“Oh god, I hope it’s not a pyramid scheme!” Gabby laughed at that, though seemed extraordinarily pleased that he thought she could help. That made her feel quite wonderful. “Yeah, I’d love to help you. And to get coffee! It sounds like fun. I could always use more friends, and to be friends with someone so talented!”

Her eyes took in the ring though and she raised her eyebrows. “Your…wife? Won’t be pissed that you’re having coffee with me yeah? Because I love the idea of friendship but don’t really love the idea of getting stabbed with a lipstick knife or something. That would suck.”

Shuddering, Gabby forced another smile. “If she’ll be cool about it, lead the way!”

Ilian laughed when she laughed, but then shook his head when she guessed wife. "Husband, actually. And he'll be fine with it," he said with a smile, because while he couldn't be sure if Lovely would stab Gabby, he thought Lovely respected his decisions enough not to question him. Too much. After all, if Gabby decided to join them, they could do a lot more work with rebranding like they wanted.

Stopping at a coffee shop didn't take too long since there was one just a few stores away. He paid for her drink, of course, because he offered and he still hoped she would be interested in what he hoped to convince her to do.

There were only so many ways he could explain the Negaverse without giving himself away, so he would have to go on faith that she was the kind of person he was looking for. Someone with passion but not necessarily knowing how to harness that passion. She could easily help with new recruits, he imagined. Everyone could use a friendly face when they didn't know what was going on.

As long as she was open minded enough.

"I'm in an organization that helps protect the city, actually," he told her once they found a bench at a nearby park. "There's been a lot of strange things going on, and we're getting new people to join us every day, but I think you have a great smile and attitude and could help us with making sure others are comfortable. If you're interested in helping others, I mean. You wouldn't have to do any heavy lifting, if you're worried about that. Just enough to keep things moving. And there's no fee to join," he added with another quiet laugh, since he promised her it wasn't a pyramid scheme.

Her eyes brightened when he mentioned a husband. “Oh! That’s utterly fantastic. I hope the two of you are happy!” Gabby was quite pleased by the fact that he bought her coffee and listened to his explanation for this not pyramid scheme…that kind of sounded like a pyramid scheme just a little. Or like a secret club. Regardless…

“I like the idea of protecting the city. Do you like, volunteer or something? Clean up the streets and pick up trash and all that? Because I’m all about that. There is a lot wrong with this city, and I’m glad to hear that you’d like me to join up and help. I can keep things moving, that’s for sure.” Gabrielle laughed softly at his joke, and shook her head. “I wouldn’t mind if I knew the fee was going to the city. Not that it really needs it, but…still. How do I sign up? When can I start to help?”

Taking a sip of her coffee, Gabby shifted on the bench to get a little more comfortable, hoping that there was something soon that she could help with.

"What if I told you there's actually some magic involved? Not too much usually. Some of the things we protect the city from is those magical terrorists that hurt people and cause all that property damage. We'll give you the resources you need, of course. And you'll have plenty of other people to meet. I really think they'd benefit from your personality," Ilian explained, really, really hoping she was going to be up for this because he enjoyed her company, despite knowing her for only about an hour or so.

"You can sign up to help right now. If you're ready. Or if you need some time to think about it," he offered, but somehow he thought she would want to jump into things already.

He stood from the bench, because even though they'd just gotten settled, he couldn't exactly do anything out in the open, and held out his hand. "If you'd like to join and start helping, just take my hand. I told you there's magic involved. Maybe a little pain at first, but it will be worth it. Unless that scares you?"

Magic…there was magic involved? If that was the case, then hell yeah Gabby was interested. She did think though, just for a moment and then nodded, standing up and grinning brightly, reaching and taking his hand. “If there’s magic involved, If you think I’ll be beneficial in protecting the city and helping people, absolutely. I’m in!”

Quickly though, she took a drink from her cup, wanting to make sure she got to have at least a little before they started to dabble in magic.

“Is this like…Harry Potter magic or more like…Houdini stuff? I’m fine with either, I’m just…really curious now. And excited.” Gabby hesitated and shook her head slowly. “I’m not afraid of a little pain. If it’s worth it, bring it on. If I get to be something more…someone useful in helping the city…it seems like pain would be well worth it.”

Ilian couldn't help but sigh softly in relief when she was even more interested now that there was magic involved.

He made sure there wasn't anyone around them, but he was going to make sure they didn't stay there long enough for anyone watching to realize anything. "Maybe a little of both for the magic. For my first trick--" he teased with a small grin as he took her hand.

There was not a lot of flourish, but he powered up and teleported with her to Negaspace in that instant. Aquamarine probably wouldn't be happy about him recruiting a pretty blonde girl, but at the moment Jet was just happy she was enthusiastic about it.

Attempting to recruit her though ended up with a trip to Axinite's office for assistance, unfortunately. Once day Jet figured he would find a normal agent to recruit, but until then he would just continue to help these Senshi as they joined their ranks.
