Normalcy was what she needed.

Destiny City was supposed to be a fresh start when she moved here after the New Year, and it had been for about a month or so until that morning in the lumber yard happened. She made it a point not to think about it too hard, lest she suddenly explode in a flurry of pastel blue skirts again. Days flip flopped between feeling like a bad dream or a reoccurring nightmare, and it still made her blood pressure rise to think about that lumbering oaf who blamed it all on her and not the real culprits: his outer space family.

No...she needed some normalcy, and that came in the form of her high anticipated weekly tennis date with Shikora. She had met the woman shortly after she arrived in the city, lost and looking for someone to play some casual rounds of tennis with---and Shikora was an utter delight. Reasonable, level headed, kind, and could get competitive when the mood struck.

Wynne stood just inside the doors to the indoor courts, small bag under her arm that contained some balls and her racket. Curly hair was pulled back, and she was all ready to go with her sneakers, leggings and sports tank.

It was nice to go to the tennis courts.

After moving to Destiny City a few years ago and after she had recovered from her coma, she had discovered this place and had come to it ever since. She had met a few tennis partners over the years, but mostly tended to do pick-up matches or just practice against the wall.

Of course, that had changed a bit recently when she had met Wynne. They had hit it off fairly fast, and Shikora was looking forward to being able to take a break and just play some tennis with her.

It let her get her head out of some of her cases, too. Destiny City was a place that was full of trauma, and though it fulfilled her to dedicate her life to it, it also drained her. Tennis was refreshing, at the very least. It took her out of that place she was in most of the time. It was a break. And though it did leave her tired afterward, it wasn't the same deep exhaustion she felt after a day of her career and, often, patrolling.

Shikora had already taken out her racket and was twirling it in her hand when she strolled up to Wynne. "'Ey!" She grinned, nodding her head towards the indoor courts. "You ready? I've been looking forward to this all week."

She figured that Wynne's answer would be yes, but she still waited for Wynne to proceed first before she would follow in.

The woman couldn't help but smile upon seeing her tennis partner and her enthusiasm. "More ready than you know and same." She replied. She needed the outlet as well. Something to work out the agitation.

Wynne did head in first, holding the door open for the other before going to snag one of the open courts. She dropped her belongings outside the boundary line on her side, and worked on stretching out her arms and legs for a moment. Wynne then fished out her own racket, idly twirling it, and couldn't help but find her thoughts straying back even though they got ready to play. Shikora had been in the city for a few years...

Had she noticed anything?

Plum painted lips pulled to the side briefly.

How did one go about asking anyone that? Methone---or whatever she had called herself---had stressed the utmost of keeping it secret unless one knew the side people were on. This just added a whole new level of complex she didn't need or want.

"You want to serve first?" She asked, after a moment.

"Bad week?" asked Shikora as she walked in, encouragingly, instinctively slipping into something of a therapist mode even if she wasn't in her office.

Fluidly, Shikored moved to her side and dropped her belongings on the opposite side of the court from Wynne. Curiously, she watched as Wynne pursed her lips and twirled her racket, wondering if there was something weighing on her mind. As good as whacking a ball back and forth was for releasing tension, if Wynne wanted to talk, Shikora was open to it. Hell, it might help even more than just popping something back and forth...

You want to serve first?

A simple enough question, and Shikora chuckled. "Of course. Lemme go grab a couple balls."

Shikora returned to her bag, fishing out a few tennis balls and setting most of them to the side of her bag. One of them, though, she tossed up into the air and back into her hand, returning with it.

"Alright. You ready?" She grinned, and once she received confirmation, she threw the ball up into the air and whacked it across the net.

"Yes." The woman replied, dragging herself away from the thoughts to firmly plant herself in the here and now. "Which is made worse by the fact it'd been a good one to start." She had finished a project for a client who had been so thrilled with the photos she'd taken they'd paid her extra---she landed a few more jobs from word of mouth from other clients---and then---

The lumber yard.

Wynne shook her head a bit though, as if in dismissal, sending a few stray curls bouncing. "How's your's been, though?" She asked as she got ready, righting her racket and focusing on the woman who had retrieved some tennis balls. She nodded, attention zeroing in on the ball, and as it came flying her way, she went for it. That first initial push into activity as the adrenaline kicked in was amazing, and she hit the ball back to Shikora with a firm whack.

Shikora couldn't help a bit of a cringe when Wynne said things had started well, even if they didn't end that way. "If you want to talk about it?" offered Shikora, warmly, even though she knew this wasn't her practice and Wynne wasn't there for a therapy session.

Even if tennis could be a therapy session of sorts.

Sometimes, it was nice just to have an ear, after all.

(She promised to try not to psychoanalyze her friends unless they wanted it, even if she often instinctively attempted to in her head. Sometimes, she couldn't help it.)

But before long, the question had been turned back around on her, and they were whacking the ball back and forth across the court. "Well, my week?" asked Shikora, bouncing to the right to smack the ball back across to Wynne once more. "Alright!" Her words, now, came as puffed out breaths between jumps, shifts, and smacks as she shifted left, right, forward, and backward, tracking the ball with her eyes. "Nothing unusually draining about work this week!"

The fact that it was draining was, on some level, implied by what she did.

"Zot called yesterday about some nonsense though!" panted Shikora, as she leaned forward to smack the ball across the court once more. "Needs to chill out!"

"Maybe later." Wynne replied. After all, how exactly did one talk about that stuff? So yeah, I was in a lumber yard (illegally, yes) and then got accosted by a giant monster bear and a bunch of magical space ballet people.

Falling into the familiar rhythm of their match helped to soothe her nerves though. This was truly what she needed. A familiar outlet. "That's good." The woman replied, swinging wide to hit the ball back to the woman. She couldn't even begin to imagine doing what Shikora did. How the woman had so much empathy left for anything else outside of work was amazing.

As the woman brought up her sibling, Wynne's painted lips couldn't help but pull up in amusement. "Oh?" She inquired. "What's got him going this time?"

Shikora respected the maybe later--no need to pry further than was welcomed--and moved right back into the joys and stress relief of a good tennis match.

Just thinking about what Zotsholo had opted to do this time distracted Shikora enough that the tennis ball went flying right by her and bounced before hitting against a wall. Momentarily sidetracked, she let out a hearty laugh, walking over to retrieve the ball.

No big deal.

Once she returned, she went ahead and served it again, not particularly concerned about who should be serving when at the moment. This was just for fun, after all. Fun and stress relief, especially considering what had probably been a bit of an awful week for Wynne--

"I don't know, a bug up his a**?" Shikora snorted, as she tracked where the tennis ball was, figuring out where to position itself for the return. "He apparently decided his agent needed to do a better job of booking endorsement deals. So Zot said he told him so."

She rolled her eyes.

"My other twin filled in that Zot told him so by calling him several rude names and trying to do the job for his agent."

Shikora would continue to entertain Wynne with stories of her twins so long as Wynne would allow her to, respecting the fact that Wynne didn't wish to speak of her troubles. The tennis game was a perfect relief, and it had been just what Shikora needed to forget the troubles of the week.

She was grateful.

When the game ended, they agreed to keep the same time and the same place, an Shikora headed home with a relieved heart.
