February was a busy month for the cafe - not as busy as the holiday shopping season, of course, but it picked up in sales after the dead of January had passed.

Daniel McKay was more than ready for the welcomed distraction, his fall and winter season not having been necessarily the very best when it came to his personal life. Sure, there really wasn’t much of a personal life to begin with but when one was on the outs with a dear friend… well.

It made the small social life even smaller.

Gatsby had been a champ when it’d come to going for a walks; they were heading out almost every morning, when the sun was still hours away from peeking across the horizon. Usually he woke up with just enough time to make himself a cup of coffee or tea before heading in to work but lately he’d been struggling with sleep so he opted to spend the extra waking hours by at least getting exercise.

Gats didn’t seem to mind.

But since February was one of the Sugar Cube’s busier months out of the year - when people ordered cookies, brownies and sweets galore - the walk with Gatsby was unfortunately postponed to the evenings so Danny could get to work even earlier than normal.

The bakery in the back needed opening even earlier, for the few items they actually made in-house. He also had to be at the shop before opening so he could take inventory and see what was left, helping him with the order for the offsite bakeries. They were getting swamped with orders just as much as Danny was so he knew if he wanted to get the products he wanted, he needed to order plenty and fast.

Coffee was his only company for most mornings, along with his small laptop that he took from out of the office to join him and his cup on the countertop. Most mornings, the shop looked acceptable from the closing the night before but occasionally he had to go through and do an extra sweep or wipe through. He didn’t get fussed about it - surely they had a busy night the night before and were eager to get home. There was always some sensible reasoning in his head as to why certain jobs didn’t get done…

And, well. He was owner now. It all fell upon him to make sure things looked good at the end of the day and it was his responsibility if things were out of sorts.

Humming to himself, putting in the day’s order and opening up the store came second nature to the young man, who… well, wasn’t feeling terribly young anymore. Owning a store was more than just playing manager - ever since his uncle left it to him, it’d felt like years had been added to his twenty-six and a half years. Like he was in his late thirties, only without the picturesque family he’d always figured he’d end up having by this point in life.

Well… he had a work family, at least.

Right?

When the small bell chimed above the door, green eyes glanced up to see a couple young DCUers enter. He hadn’t remembered leaving the door unlocked - a scatterbrained moment he’d have to pay closer attention to, it seemed. The girls were friendly enough, both carting boxes of flowers in an attempt to fundraise.

Not one to say no to hardworking young students of the local college, Danny was quick to tug out his wallet and slide some money out in exchange for a handful of flowers. He’d put them out on the tables, he figured, setting aside a few for the special people in his life.

They weren’t cookies but they’d still be a nice sentiment, right?
