Dark tonight. The wintery sky was overcast and grey. It felt oppressive, and though it didn’t truly bother her like this, Tanais knew it was cold. Bare tree branches shivered in the wind and it kicked up little flurries of snow between the buildings. Not the most welcoming of nights to be out.

Down West Lake street and across to 1st Avenue, the mars knight kept her sense spread wide, feeling for the little points of wrongness she had come to recognize as agents of chaos. They burned cold in her senses. Drew her on. One more than the others, stronger than the others. She suspected it might be a General and her pulse beat faster. A Challenge. Someone who could really test her strength.

Tanais burst around the corner and jumped high, arcing to the corner of a roof nearby. Feet planted, she waited, still save for wind ruffling her hair. It smelled like gasoline and garbage from down the alley, smells of people in close proximity, vying for resources. City Life. The only kind she knew, really. They weren’t far… The feel of the other signature was strong, and moving. She figured they probably feel her and she was ready for it. The knight hadn’t had a proper fight in too long.

It wasn't the energy that had the general out and about most evenings, it was the hunt for new blood to the cause. Perspective agents and senshi she could bring into the fold, under her wing. Her flock was grown, the majority having left the nest to start their own flocks or immerse themselves in civilian affairs. Now she had only senshi to shepherd over, Ochre and now Vanth, and of the two it was the latter that needed her guidance most. But she had so much more to offer. More wisdom to give, strength to imbue. It was just a matter of finding the right candidate...

A flicker of light prickled at her senses in the distance and it had the general lifting her head from the crowd of civilians flooding out the doors of a movie theater. Strong, eternal or knight, though it felt more like the latter in her head as she focused on it. Moving quickly towards her. Eager?

She was ready when the knight arrived, carrying the advantage of teleportation. The departing darkness vanished from the tall warrior's senses all at once before flicking back into bright existence at her rear. "Bold of you to come barreling blindly into a fight," she chided, voice a warm purr as smaller of the two fighters pushed back her hood.

She hadn't changed much. Still pale, still corded in muscles. Silver eyes blazed from a dark smear of black paint, and violet hair hung around her face, longer now than it ever had been. Hands in fists at her sides, weight evenly distributed, she waited.

The signature vanished and for a moment Tanais felt disappointment, like she'd been cheated of something she had been wishing for. A frown creased her brow, but it didn't last long. Suddenly the energy burst to life, close and person and behind her.

Bold of you...

She laughed deep in her chest as she turned, a wide grin on her face that was as fierce as it was pleased. It seemed she would get her fight after all, and clearly this one had no compunction against using that ace the other side always had to hand.

"Not so blind, when I knew you were here. And I'm nothing if not bold." She said, a laugh in her words. Adrenaline sang through her veins and she was so ready for it...

The other was... surprisingly small, but that didn't mean much. Skill didn't have a height requirement and neither did the power they both held. The only thing Tanais knew she had on the smaller woman was reach, and there were ways around that if you knew what you were doing. The other surprise was the sense of familiarity she got, though she could not pull the woman's name out of the foggy depths of memory, nor remember where she had seen her before. Before. Likely this was someone she had known once, but that really did nothing to help bring recognition.

Tanais brought her hands up and slammed her knuckles together with a crash of metal, bright brass materializing around her fists. Lions snarled from the backs and her grin was just as toothy.

"The Negaverse isn't welcome in Destiny City any more." She stated. "This is your chance to leave."

Or else was unspoken.

That laugh was delighted, wild, and familiar. I know that laugh... She'd heard it countless times before, not just in meetings and missions, but under the dim lights of a bar, and softer still in the darkness of a bedroom.

She stiffened, mind momentarily unwilling to accept what she was seeing, but as the knight spoke it was undeniably, painfully obvious that the woman standing before her was in fact her former colleague and friend. "Cin..." The irony of this moment was thick enough to choke on. Cinnabar had drawn her into her side project of hunting down turncoats, a project she'd so so passionate about, and there she stood now, aura bright enough to blind, wearing the symbol of Mars. Fighting for them.

The general felt cold as the shock of it settled over her, inside her, and she felt herself reacting to the clang of golden gauntlets unconsciously.

Her chin lifted, features stony and intense as metallic silver flashed across her shoulders and down her arms to end in dangerous spikes at her knuckles. Fingers curled into fists tight enough for the metal to bite into the skin of her palms, but she didn't seem to feel it. "You are a traitor, a deserter and betrayer, and this will not stand." She would allow it, couldn't allow it.

A second to stare up at the other woman, and the general charged, arm cocked back and already rolling forward, anger aiming her fist not to subdue but to hurt. She wasn't aiming for that pretty, familiar face, but for a point six inches inside her ******** skull.

The flash of metal sent a shiver of sensation down her spine, raising goosebumps on her arms and making her heart race with anticipation.

Here was someone who wouldn't be holding her at bay with the length of a weapon between them. This was going to be a close, physical encounter, and it made her blood sing. War and Justice were the domain of Mars, and she felt them sitting on her shoulders.

Cin... Traitor.

Tanais grimaced at it. Someone else who had known her before. It didn't change anything, not really, but she wondered what they had been to each other. Colleagues? Partners? Rivals? Who knew.

"Did you miss me, short stack?" She taunted as the woman lunged at her, fist cocked. It was instinctive reaction to swing her forearm up, metal clanging on metal and deflecting the punch away from her face. She still felt the shock of it vibrating up her arm, numbing her fingertips, and forcing her back a step.

Strong. Knows how to fight. Probably well experienced with fists, to have the weapon she had. It was a slight advantage, with Tanais only knowing how to respond, without all the little details of how she had learned it. Just a bone deep knowing, of muscle memory, to carry her.

"Did you think I died? Did you cry?" Tanais purred. Not very sportsman-like, but winning was more important than how you did it, right? She kicked forward, looking to put space between them

The nickname had brought a cold little curl to dark lips, not because it was familiar, but because it dropped home to the general that this knight was no longer the woman she'd known. It was one more little fissure of divide that would make bringing her to get knees so much more satisfying. It removed the pang of guilt, that lingering respect and camaraderie Xenotime still harbored for her fellow general.

That woman was already gone. What remained was a shell that didn't realize it was dead yet.

Metal against metal shrieked as the punch connected with a gauntlet covered arm, and Xenotime felt the shock of it all the way up through her elbow, an aching tingle that pulled her lips back into an excited grin. She could talk all she wanted, but her words held no power. They flowed over the general like water off a duck's back.

As the kick sailed towards her the smaller fighter jerked to the side, but a hand slapped down on a lace covered ankle, another coming up from beneath and a split second shift put small hands on foot and heel before twisting to try to throw the taller woman right off her ******** feet.

"You're not getting any tears from me, b***h. You don't deserve that sort of mourning." Her voice was cold, barbed.

The twist of her foot was painful, and if she hadn't followed it, she might have gotten a sprain to go with the bruises she was sure to have.

Tanais twisted into the grip and dropped a shoulder, letting her whole body go to relieve the pressure on the joint in her ankle. She hit the ground in a roll and twisted, dragging herself from the grip to get her feet back under her. Crouched, she still smiled, as unbothered as her opponent was.

"No tears." She clucked her tongue. "How cruel. But I guess I'm not surprised, considering how frigid you look. Do you still have a heart under all that taint?"

Not easy to breathe and take jabs at the woman at the same time, but she managed, at least for now. The places she ached, the pain of the blows, were delightful and that dark joy colored her taunts. Everything had narrowed down to this place, this moment, and the clash. Horns honked below, music rippled up, but it was all background noise, not worth noticing.

"I might be a b***h, but at least I'm not Metallia's little whore. Sucking the life out this city like a god damn leech..." She said, her lips pulled tight over her bared teeth. Feet gathered under her, Tanais launched herself forward and up, arms opened to bear hug the smaller woman.

It had worked for Ghen, when they had sparred. Take away her advantage of speed, press advantage of weight and strength. It might work here. Or she might get a fist in her chest, who knew.

Banter from strangers held no barbs. The knight could talk all she wanted but nothing she said mattered anymore. Cinnabar was already dead, and this woman walking around in familiar skin would follow soon enough. It was all just ignorable static, and Xenotime's features never so much as faltered as the taller woman spit venom as she got back to her feet.

No, cool eyes were alive and bright as the petite fighter sank back into comfortable lines, hands up and feet apart, she was balanced and ready for whatever the b***h decide to throw at her. Including herself.

Xenotime made an amused sound as she blinked out of existence before muscular forearms had a chance to close around her. It was a reckless move, a rookie mistake that any self respecting knight should have known better to attempt on general, but this knight had no memories of who she used to be and no experience with what she was now.

She appeared again at the taller woman's back and with a sharp twist of her hips she slammed the bottom of one boot clad foot directly into the small of the woman's back.

"You mean anymore," she corrected acidly. "You aren't Metallia's little whore anymore. Now you belong to the moon b***h. That absentee monarch that doesn't give a rat's a** about her soldiers."

The general disappeared as her arms closed around her and for a moment Tanais was confused. It was the hard strike to her back, sending her to her knees, and revealed where the small woman had gone to.

Stupid. She knew they could teleport. She should have assumed she'd use it in battle. Why wouldn't she? Any weapon that got the job done, anything that brought victory. This wasn't a spar in a gym, this was real. Life and death, real.

Tanais's back ached from the blow just below her breastplate, where metal didn't protect her and she had to suck in to manage a breath. The pain rippled up from the injury, but she soaked it in, letting it goad her rather than dissuade her.

"I don't belong to anyone but myself. No collar, no leash." She growled at the ground between her hands. Metal had protected her palms and knees from the rough cement. Metal that still shone, reminding her it was her own strength, her own skill, that protected her. That metal was only there to let her hit harder.

"No more chains!"

Tanais swept her out behind her and then spun, coming up into a crouch and then surging upwards, swinging hard with a fist to the face in that cowl.

The sound of those metal gauntlet's grating against the cement was so gratifying, but it wasn't enough. The hiss of her breath after the kick hadn't been enough. She wanted to grab the knight and teleport to the top of he tallest building in the city just to shove her over the edge so she could watch her fall.

It was a beautiful image, and silver eyes flicked up to skyscraper at the end of the street, calculating.

The pause was enough to let the knight spring back to her feet, and Xenotime's attention snapped back with an almost audible twang, and she had her teeth bared, lips drawing back in a feral snarl that cut off abruptly as a metal covered fist slammed into her face.

It sent her reeling, head snapping back and her balance foundering before she managed to reclaim it. Her lip was split, blood dripping from her nose and down her chin, and she spit a mouthful of red stained spit on the concrete between them. "b***h, you're nothing but a body on the ground that hasn't laid the ******** down yet." Her face ached, jaw itself bruised, but she wasn't a stranger to pain and it wasn't about to slow her down.

There was no warning when she snapped forward, and after a right feint her left fist was coming around in a wicked haymaker aimed at the other woman's right cheek.

The blood splattered across the concrete sent a thrill through her. First Blood. She'd scored a point, in a way that only mattered to her and possibly to the general she faced off against. That pretty pout was red rather than purple now, and damn if it didn't look good on her. The fierceness, even the anger. They were more similar than either would admit out loud, she suspected, and that was thrilling too.

The thought of bringing a weapon out with her when she patrolled had never even crossed her mind. This was why. The pair of them, they were weapons. Hands, feet, elbows, knees, minds. What would a knife bring to this fight, or the gun in a safe under her bed? She wouldn't get the visceral pleasure of matching herself, blow to blow, with someone nearly as strong as she was.

Pretty damn close in strength, really... She thought faintly as pain exploded in her face. Something cracked in her cheek and Tanais couldn't help the wheeze of pain as her head was jerked to the side. Her nose was on fire, making her eyes water and stream.

Stupid... falling for something as basic as a feint. Fists up by her face while she struggled to clear her vision, Tanais back up a few steps, braced for another hit.

"I'll die on my feet." She laughed, the sound grating and not as bright as it had been, tarnished by pain. "See if I don't. But by all means, Ladies first."

Darting forward, Tanais planted a foot and kicked out with the other, sweeping it low.

We could start wrapping this. You can knock her down if you want, and cause some heavy injury. Maybe break a limb. Her nose and cheekbone are already broken.
