So many lessons, and so many things Anakumath missed when she was pulled from classes with the others to go sit at the table with the rest of the golds to learn what was expected of her - and how she would do her service to Pern, what flesh she would pay in the place of flame she could not.

Sometimes, coming back from such lessons to rejoin the others was just a bit more difficult. That she was something other was more painfully obvious and checking in, seeing what had been missed - what things she would never join them for, never know. Martirae took none of it personally, but such glaring gaps always bothered Anakumath. All the support in the world only did so much when they settled in for the evening meal.

If there was anybody she trusted to be keeping an eye on all of the others in their class when she was away, it was Alquemieth - always watching and always with an opinion. Certainly, the bronze had a certain flavor to his opinions, but he was always reliable.

How were the others today? Did ground drills go well?

It was...three months now? Ish? Time really flew for Arcadin, now Ar’din. Faces blurred, names were stuck in files, and at the center of it all was Alquemieth, like some hearth fire central to the home: sometimes warm (cozy, even), usually more like a smith’s forge with heat blasting away intruders. But there were always a select few welcome to the home as far as the bronze was concerned, and Ar’din had to hide a snort in his bread as he felt his partner stand at attention.

< Anakumath. In summary, > Alquemieth reported, < a few clutchmates thought their time was better spent playing than paying attention, but minus the riffraff it could have gone worse. I would be so bold as to say Second L’shir was too kind, Assistant A’zota too tired. Weyrlingmaster V’mel, unfortunately, was with with Tea group today, or there might have been less of an issue with staying in formation. >

He did not say as much, but it was clear he had stepped in to help pull the reigns.

So alert and so attentive. Anakumath was painfully aware as to why that was, to painfully informed by her own nerves and Martirae's sharp intelligence to be able to ignore it. Martirae grabbed that vice grip with both hands before it could set in and clamp up her hearts, her lungs, her everything. We cannot run from it, so we will learn to live up to it, Martirae had said of such things. Ah, if only her cousin could learn to think of the others so fondly - Zezollath, Skerath, Zygmuth, and so many more wonderful dragons to make his world a little brighter.

I see. But is everybody doing well? she inquired, tone as soft as it ever was. Nobody looks under the weather? Stressed? Staying in formation was all well and good, and she'd quietly noted that Eriath's was tired (he always seemed that way however) and would figure what to do about that without stepping on any toes.

Anticipating the question, Alquemieth replied, < Sick, no. Not as far as I saw. > But he was the wrong dragon to ask after others’ well-being otherwise. His eyes flickered with an ember of annoyance as he remembered, as nonetheless he must answer for a gold. < There was the usual hint of cattiness among particular greens when they discussed maiden flights. Someone managed once again to trip over thin air. A white and blue pair of terrible purpose tried to make a game of the lesson. All was much the same today, for better or worse. >

(Spoiler: it was usually worse.)

Nevermind them, Alquemieth wanted to say, but he smoothed the impulse over. As usual, Anakumath’s hearts were too big for the gremlins that crowded them. < What of you and Mictecath? > he asked. < How go your lessons? >
