Stepping out onto the edge of the rooftop of Lucio's Family Dining, Ida's eyes narrowed as she reached out with her inner senses, feeling the bright (and dark) spots that shone around her. Each one represented a life with power burning in it, someone part of the semi-secret war being waged in the city.

After so long, Ida had gotten pretty good at judging the strength of those around her, enough to tell what group they belonged to and what level they had attained. She knew a Knight from a Dark Mirror, and a basic senshi from a General. She could feel when they were near her, and near each other, as she sensed two now. She turned her head that direction, squinting into the evening sun as it sank past the trees of the park nearby.

A basic versus a General was never a happy time. Whatever was going on probably wasn't going to turn out okay without intervention, and she had personal experience to back that with. It didn't even take much thought to decide what to do about it before she was running towards the signatures, gathering her feet under her to drop of the building and dash across the road before a car turned the corner to see her. She was into the bushes before it passed and then everything was dimness under the trees, before breaking into the golden red light of the lawn.

Somewhere close... The senshi thought as she cast about her, trying to sort through the sounds of the city for sounds of a struggle or voices, or something...

Painite felt like she had been lost and doubting herself for too long. With things becoming stagnant, her life upside down, she no longer knew what she wanted or needed to fix it. Was that urge to purify just a passing phase, something she had almost given too much attention to? She could have been facing a mistake, one she would be unable to take back if she fell into it recklessly.

Maybe things were better this way, with the Negaverse, knowing who she was and what she was meant to do. Maybe hoping for a life beyond the pitiful existence of a monster was too much to ask for. She always had fun with it before: maybe, just maybe, she could get back to who she used to be.

It made more sense than trying to change, didn't it?

And it was easier. For everyone.

Holding her bloody spear loosely, she looked down at the unconscious senshi at her feet. She'd gotten the drop on the poor little scout, though the gap in their power made that pretty easy. Stooping, she ran her hand over the bow on the front of the senshi's fuku, tilting her head in thought. She dipped her hand into the senshi's chest, curling her fingers around the starseed and pulling it out without too much thought. That, at least, was still easy.

Except she felt a strange weight in the back of her mind, and she held the starseed up to examine it. Pretty, small, and worth fighting a war over. It seemed a little pathetic, in that moment, that such a small thing had so much importance. Not just to her masters or those that would protect this source of energy, but to the life she had just pulled away and now held in her hand.

She looked down at the senshi again, not even paying enough attention to the auras around her to notice the approach of another. She was not aware someone might be watching as she put the starseed back where she found it, for the first time in her entire existence. She wasn't even sure it would matter now, she had never tried this kind of thing before. All she knew was it did not feel the same any more.

There was just no point in taking that starseed. But if she didn't have that, then what did she have now?

The dark aura drew her onwards and Ida followed, crossing streets and a park to narrow in on it. Somewhere... it was close... there!

Rounding a corner, she found the scene she had been looking for, taking in the tableau with quick glance. A general and a senshi, on the ground. An old, familiar face... not one that terrified her any more, but there was still a sense of dread to see it.

Painite.

Someone who had caused multiple deaths in the war, she was sure, and if she didn't know if they were civilian or powered, she suspected it might not have mattered. The woman had been rabid and blood thirsty, the last time they'd met... she didn't expect that to have changed. There was a starseed in her hand, and then Ida was afraid, for the senshi on the ground. So small and fragile, in a hand of a monster...

She had gathered herself to lunge towards them when Painite stooped and... put it back. The motion drew Ida up short in uncertainty, poised on the balls of her feet with her hands up. Confusion spawned a thousand questions, not the least of them 'is this a trap?'. It could be... but she didn't sense any one else nearby.

"Painite." Ida called over to her, still tensed and wary. "What are you doing?"

She didn't trust any of this, but not knowing could be as dangerous as anything else.

"I don't really know," Painite said, sighing as she stood up and looked at Ida. She grunted in disapproval and rolled her eyes, folding her arms over her chest and not moving away from the senshi just yet. In case she needed a piece of leverage, knowing she and Ida did not exactly have a peaceful encounter rate.

Mostly her own fault, of course, and she still did not feel exactly guilty about it.

Or she wouldn't let herself think about it long enough to really let that sink in.

"Come to stop the monster from her hunt, eh?" She sneered, frowning. She did not bother calling her spear, letting it lean against her as she stood with her arms folded. Not a particularly useful battle stance, though she was very good at leaping into the fray quickly. She utilized her teleportation ability, anyway, so not holding her spear did not necessarily mean she was safe to be around.

"Technically, you're a little too late. I'd've taken that seed and gone already, if I wanted it. Maybe I was just using this bait to draw a dumb hero like you out into the open." She moved her arms now, catching her spear and pointing the bloody end toward Ida. She didn't feel any of the fun and thrill picking a fight used to instill in her, and it reflected in her tone.

"Make your move, Sparkles. Come get some good ol' fashion revenge from your dear friend Painite."

The senshi listened with a frown as Painite... postured. That's all she could think of to describe it. It wasn't really a threat... she'd life through Painite being truly dangerous, and this was not that. She was far more used to being attacked on sight, but... it had been a while since their last encounter, and that one had not ended well for Painite, even if Ida hadn't come out of it unscathed either.

I don't really know.

Ida spread her arms, but she didn't move from where she stood. "If you were luring me, then here I am."

Dark eyes studied the other woman, less worried about the spear than she knew she would have been another time. She ignored it, though she never really stopped being aware of where it was and where it was pointed.

"If you wanted that starseed, you would have taken it and been gone." She agreed as she lowered her arms. "Is it revenge you want then? I'm afraid it won't come from me though, as much as I have reasons to want it. Its not really how I operate."

"Are you tired of playing the monster?" Ida asked with a lighter tone, only vaguely serious about the question. She'd always considered Painite one of the generals so far sunk into the mire of Chaos that it was unlikely she'd ever climb out... sharing space with Labyrinthite and Alkaid. It was hard to imagine she'd suddenly had a change of heart.

"Playing? I might have a lot of fun with what I do, but I've never been anything but sincere," she scoffed, finding it hard to let her true feelings be known, despite how troubled she really was. It was easier to do as Ida said, and play the part she was known for.

Even if she was not sure that was what she wanted any more.

"You seem to think you know me. Maybe you can be useful to me for once. Besides being a very fun pincushion, I mean." She did not move in an aggressive way, not really seeming all that interested in defending herself from a possible attack, let alone initiating one of her own. Of course, Painite's favorite attack tactic was teleporting close to someone and stabbing them before they could do much about it.

So her stance beforehand was not always that telling.

Still, there was a softness in her eyes that betrayed how passive she actually was, despite her hostile words and her goading. Some habits, like being a tough and sarcastic brawler, were hard to break.

"Where does the white branch of peace die off for the White Moon? With all your spouting heroic rants and promising a peaceful future, how far are you actually willing to go? What are you willing to forgive? How many dead bodies is too many to be cleansed for? Forgiven for? Is forgiveness part of the deal when you make one of our ranks a traitor, or can you just look past the blood on their hands?"

The senshi frowned as Painite spoke, disliking having someone like the general deciding she was 'useful'. There weren't a lot of ways she wanted to be useful to someone like that... but the frown faded with the questions, replaced with something more troubled.

Despite the gulf between them, the hard battle lines they'd drawn in the past, Ida didn't just brush off the questions. Painite could have been mocking her, she wouldn't have been surprised, but she still gave them serious thought. How much could I forgive? She echoed.

Could she forgive Labyrinthite for the terror? Alkaid, for reducing her to an energy slave? Bischofite, for breaking her? All of them had blood on their hands, and she was certain all had more than she knew about. Could she forgive Titan, for falling to the Chaos in his heart?

Slowly, Ida formed her answer, each word carefully weighed. "I would ask... if they wanted my forgiveness. If they regretted the lives they had taken and the pain they caused. If... they wanted to do better."

Brown hands clasped together, a thumb running over small silver scars.

"No person is purely a monster." Ida murmured. "They might be a monster in one moment, but a person is a series of choices, and unlimited potential. I could forgive someone who realized what they had done was wrong, and wanted a way out of the mire. But I'm human, with human feelings. Even if I couldn't personally forgive someone for the damage they've done... I could forgive them as a senshi, if it meant seeing them free of Metallia's control. I don't have to like someone to want to give them a chance to be a better person."

Painite watched Ida, trying to feign a grin, but her usual bravado was faded this evening. She did not seem like the ever confident monster she usually was, and if she were honest with herself, she could not remember the last time she felt that kind of confidence. Everything was a question now, and it was all made worse without the support of the woman she loved.

"What if you had no choice? You're White Moon, right? If someone decided to join your ranks, whether you like it or not, you would have to support them, wouldn't you? Or would their wicked deeds and impressive score card follow them? What happens if they can't remember why you hate them? Or worse, if they do remember everything they've ever done, and the feeling of enjoying it. How could someone like that ever make a life in Order? It seems to me like Chaos will always be there, no matter what they call themselves."

Obviously, she was not being as subtle as she would like to be, but she was too tired and defeated by her own complicated thoughts and emotions to want to hide much these days. As long as she was careful in the right ways, to the right people, she could avoid real trouble. But she still needed answers, and felt compelled to talk.

Maybe take notes, and a consensus on where different members of the white moon stood on traitors and ex-murderers. Particularly ones that took very specific interest in their individual suffering.

"What really makes us all that different? Why is serving Metallia, or Chaos, worse than serving your Order princesses, and your ideals? What makes you so sure that you're offering anyone a chance to be a 'better person', Sparkles?"

"Are you trying to convince me of something, Painite?" Ida mused. "Or yourself?"

"it doesn't, ultimately, matter how I feel about someone. My feelings are immaterial." She didn't know to explain that, but she tried. This felt important. This moment of questioning was important... and handling it lightly, not giving it the seriousness it deserved, would be to do the world a great injustice and perhaps doom the future to more of the past. Not that, she thought, she was so important, really...

But one small thing could lead to big things. Things that changed other things.

"I strongly feel that hurting people is wrong." She said finally. "Anything that requires you to hurt people, who haven't signed up to be part of all of this, is wrong. Maybe people on this side aren't any better than on your side. Maybe your side has people who have good intentions..."

She could think of one, at least.

"But the fact that you don't have a choice in it, that you can't operate without hurting people... that makes it worse. You have the choice, here. A chance. You don't have to answer to anyone who wants to make you do something." It wasn't the most compelling of arguments, maybe. But she felt it very deeply. It steeled her voice. "I care more about the people you hurt than what side you are on, Painite. And if you're willing to give that up? I would welcome you, whole heartedly. I would help you free yourself, whatever it took."

"I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I don't need to. I'm just asking some questions. You guys like to talk so much, what's the problem when I throw it back at you? Don't like being the ones that have to do the thinking for once?"

She was snappish and quick to resort to insults, if only because she was trying to keep her defenses high. It was not familiar for her, being so vulnerable, and trying to seek help from these unlikely places. Her enemies, people she terrorized, and even still hated, but somehow were her only chance at anything meaningful.

Her only hope of helping her fiance, and maybe even...

She frowned and scoffed, rolling her eyes at the answer, but she listened. She said nothing, and even looked back at the senshi as she spoke. She already knew the white moon felt bad for them, like they were the victims of their own team, but she had never believed that before. Camelot always spouted off about how chaos itself was the enemy, and that it corrupted people into doing what they did in the name of the Negaverse. But Painite always felt like she enjoyed what she was doing.

Like she was in control.

When did that change?

"You White Moon folks are really sentimental. I don't know if I have that in me," she drawled, though her words were empty. She looked upset, even afraid, and she kicked idly at the ground with one food. "It's pretty stupid, wanting to just... adopt whatever monster stumbles into your path. You must be pretty confident in that whole purification thing. Have you ever thought about what might happen if it didn't get everything? If it left a little monster behind?"

Ida sighed inwardly, her dark eyes reproachful.

She'd never said she didn't want to listen. Painite was snapping because she was unsure of herself, and that in itself was a sort of revelation. She wanted her to rise to the bait, so she could cover up her insecurities with bluster and anger.

"I don't know about the rest, but maybe I am sentimental, if you want to call caring about people who aren't myself or directly related to me 'sentimental'." She rolled a shoulder in a shrug.

"So what if it does leave a little monster, Painite? Are you afraid of that? Do you think you can't control it? Purification isn't going to change who you are inside... but it will remove the chaos that makes you think the things you do are okay, that lets you justify what you do for Metallia. Sure, you'll still be you. But you'll be you, the real, honest you... not Metallia's puppet." Ida leaned towards her, lowering her voice. "A little monster doesn't mean you can't still make good choices. It just means you have to work a little harder for it."

She wasn't sure why she tried to argue any of this... Painite hardly seemed to be listening to her. But while she responded, Painite kept talking, and that felt important. Maybe goading her was the wrong route to take, but she wasn't Hver... she couldn't see things the way her girlfriend could, or phrase them in a way that supported and drew out the best in people. But she tried her best, in her own way.

Painite actually stayed quiet to let Ida speak, watching her with troubled, but still very bright and clear, sea green eyes. They lacked that dangerous edge they used to carry, the one that indicated she was always just about to stab someone in the face. Right now, the very last thing she wanted to do was hurt anyone.

Which was pathetic, and made her feel weak and useless, but there it was. The truth of the whole thing.

It seemed that idea of Chaos making them into people they were not, or at least weren't always, was spread pretty deeply into the White Moon. Was it true? Would she be a better person if she had been allowed to awaken as a knight, or maybe just continued a life as a civilian? She always imagined she probably would have turned out to be a serial killer, just without the job to 'justify' it.

But maybe she would have been an actress like she wanted, or better yet, a reporter on television. Those dreams seemed so long ago, they were laughable and childish now. Not anything she wanted any more and yet she was not sure what she wanted.

To have a chance at it, whatever it was, though...

"Yeah, okay," Painite sighed, looking suddenly winded and tired. She turned her face away, hiding a surge of emotions as best she could. Those seemed to be happening more and more, when before she had no problem ignoring the little black hole where her heart was meant to be. "I mean, I didn't mean anything by any of this. I was just picking your brain. Don't go blabbing that I was asking questions. But... thanks."

"Of course." Ida said, lifting and dropping her shoulders in a loose shrug. "We never even met tonight, if that works for you."

Potential hung heavy over this moment, and the senshi had to wonder how the dice were going to fall. Was this the start of a new path for Painite? Or just a deviation in the one she was on. A moment of weakness quickly forgotten...

"If... you ever need anything. Even with everything between us. Ask me. I'll listen, like I did tonight." It wasn't a lot, and maybe she'd never use it, but Ida was entirely serious about it. It was the same offer she'd made to Titan... with as much uncertainty as this. Maybe neither would ever ask. Maybe they would. Who knew?

But she was earnest and ready.

"Good luck with your questions." She said as she turned, feeling the hairs rise on the back of her neck but doing it anyway. Ida lifted a hand in farewell. "I hope you find what you're looking for."

That's fin! Thank you, thank you <3

Painite watched her for a long moment, unsure. She nodded her head, feeling like she had already used up her 'thank you' for the night. She doubted she had any more left in her for a while, especially for the White Moon, but at least she had managed one tonight. Really, she did appreciate the talk. Her head was so confused and filled with conflict, it was difficult for her to sift through it all and pretend that she was okay after the attempt.

Being able to talk, say things she probably should have kept quiet, was weirdly cathartic. Even if she had been rude and stubborn through out the conversation, she got a little relief from it.

And she had not hurt anyone. She supposed that counted as a win for both sides. Well. She hadn't killed anyone, anyway.

She watched as Ida turned from her, something the senshi would never have dared back in the day. Painite grinned, teleporting and appearing in front of Ida, with her spear in hand. A quick little scare, a joke about the past maybe, but no attack came. She let the weapon vanish, though, and instead offered the senshi her hand. After a quick hand shake, she teleported again, but this time did not reappear in the area.
