Protect the Seals

For those of you don't know about it, basically it's the biggest marine animal hunt in the world, it's yearly, and Canadian government wants to brutally kill (by beating to death or skinning alive) innocent baby seals for their fur and to prevent fish population drops that would negatively affect their economy (and really it wouldn't make that big of a difference). There was a boycott last year organized by the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) where many people and restaurants refused to buy Canadian seafood (including me biggrin ). But anyhow, they don't even use the rest of the seal pups. They just leave them bleeding on the ice, skinned and dead. They even pay the hunters BY THE SEAL, not by the hour.

Despite all the pleas and petitions, the new Prime Minister of Canada still wouldn't cancel the hunt. There was even a protest in my area (unfortunately, I couldn't go), and from what I heard from someone who went, it turned out to have a lot of people. She made a project on the Canadian Seal Hunt and asked the Canadian government people there to give their input, but they wouldn't say anything. stare They DID give her a packet of information though....They claim that they kill the seals quickly and that it's a "tradition."

So...discuss the seal hunt and write to the new Prime Minister to stop it.

It's barbaric and cruel - If I lived in Canada I'd want to be out there trying to stop them killing the seals. I've signed petitions about it and emailed the Prime Minister of Canada. But I still feel so useless scream cry

I've done the same, but apparently they don't want to listen. stare

Do not let your heart fail, my friends. It's become a world issue now and thousands, if not millions, of people are trying to stop this seal holocaust.

Gar...What IS gonna make them finally stop it though??

I do not know, but the world has heard of it now and organizations are being created as we speak to go against it. ^_^

I hate to say it, but it really shouldn't be stopped.

I know, I know... WTF, What the heck is wrong with you!?!?!?!?!? Right? Right.

We have to understand that this is an age-old tradition for not only humans, but now for the seals as well. This not only promotes natural selection, but have made humans the regulators of the seal populations.

What would happen if the seal hunt was ended?

Seal populations would go boom. Explode to numbers so large they would deplete their food source.

What would happen then? We'd be worrying not only about the food source's existense, but also about the poor little starving seals.

So, as much as I hate to say it, in a way, its wrong to protest this rather morbid event.

If there's evidence that can somehow prove me wrong, please show me, then I'll be more than glad to support the anti-seal hunting cause.

Could you give evidence that the population would go boom? Obviously it would increase, but how do you know that it would elevate so much?

And I'm getting my own proof right now. smile

And thank you. It's good to see both sides. smile

Oh and also, if they really have to keep the population down, why can't they do it more humanely? And what's the point of killing the pups only?

I agree. While we are acting as a selective force, how long as this tradition been going on for? More specifically how many generations of seals and what is the seal population size right now? I know of a website that might help us predict the impact of this selection. But first I'd like to think this through if I may.
(1) In order for natural selection to work there must be a large enough population size that genetic drift would not be a concern, because natural selection requires that new mutations have a high enough probability of being present in the next generation.
(2) The selective force being applied is ability to avoid skinning by humans, there is no evidence to suppose that those seals that avoid humans would be able to have higher fecundity. Also since seals are mammals and have sizeable offspring it's not likely that even this selective pressure could make it possible for them to have more than a couple offspring per reproductive event.
(3) The actual evolutionary force taking place here is GENETIC DRIFT, the plight of all endangered animals. Genetic drift is when a population loses its genetic diversity due to the population beings so small that not all alleles make it into the next generation.
(4) When this happens the population is subject to any random event. If there's a low in the food supply of preferred food the population could nose-dive more and possibly go extinct because only a handful of individuals are left to reproduce.
(5) As more seals are killed, especially the young, there are fewer seals that will survive to reproductive maturity and those seals that are reproductively mature will evenutally die.

I don't like meaningless slaughter, but my main objection is more animals becoming endangered.

I also found some footage of the seal hunt by HSUS: http://stream.luxmedia501.com/?file=realimpact/hsus/2006-seal-hunt/overview_2006.wmv&type=wmv

Obviously since it's from an animal-protecting organization, it could be biased. However the footage is so graphic and violent, so I still think that the slaughter should not go on or at least not so brutally.

That makes me want to cry.

It's about as necessary as Bull Fights. I don't care if it's Tradition or whatever. It's wrong and needs to end.
