"We ran as if to meet the moon"

Welcome to The Lunaris Herd, where those who respect the moon reside. The nocturnal creatures of this herd
welcome you, although tread lightly, as they are as quick to flee into the night.

As a general note, in-character rules can be broken! It simply means there will be in-character consequences/reactions to said action.

      User Image
      • Please ask before using a similar layout or graphic.
There's only so much you can do with a herd, but if you want to heavily reference this one please ask first. I put a lot of work in these herds!
      • You need approval in this thread to be a member of the herd.
You can't say your pony is a member of the herd without said approval! Breeding kids also need a form posted.
      • This is a herd where members cannot be part of any other herd.
Due to how they generally feel about secrecy and (for the most part) live among one another, it's not possible to be in another herd. If you wish to join another herd your pony will have to leave this one.
      • Requests for plots that effect the herd should be run by Nymphiea first.
Ask Nymphiea before attempting a plot that will greatly effect the herd. Drama is loved, so most likely the answer will be yes.

      User Image
      • Disagreements will be handled verbally.
While they trust one another enough to feel comfortable with conflict, it should only be done so verbally. Physical violence, for the most part, is met with punishment and in extreme cases banishment. Physical violence with someone outside the herd is fine.
      • Only the Moon Seer and The Second can officially make changes within the herd.
All ponies must answer to the Moon Seer and The Second. They are the official top of the hierarchy (although The Second answers to the Moon Seer).
      • One should not have a life partner outside of the herd.
The herd strongly believes in their connection with one another. They typically reject the idea of allowing outsiders near. Mates should be brought to join the herd. The herd does not care what one does for fun, but picking a partner for life means they should bring them into the herd. Children from any flings are welcomed to join Lunaris, but they have limited visits if they choose not to join.
      • Children may leave once they're an adult.
While children are strongly encouraged to stay within the herd, they may leave once they are an adult. Leaving means being removed from the herd entirely. While they can return and go through the same tests new members go through, they are not granted access to the herd unless they join again. They will be treated as an outsider.
      • Full moons are time of celebration!
A feast will be thrown and music will be played all night. This is the perfect time for ceremonies. It is expected any ill-feelings or conflict will be kept at bay until the night is over.
      • New moons are a night of rest and isolation.
New moons are bad omens to the herd. Members will spend the time with direct family and stay indoors. It is believed the night is unsafe ponies should avoid dangerous activities.

tab The Lunaris Herd, situated deep within Dream Valley, is a herd that greatly respects the moon and those who prefer to walk among it. Members are entirely nocturnal, waking just as the sun sets and going to sleep once the sun is up. While they are nocturnal it is important to note they don't resent the sun; they hold a healthy respect for the daytime and understand most creatures both need and choose to exist within that time of day -- they just choose not to. Emergencies are often the only reason you'll see a member of Lunaris awake during daylight.

tab Many members within Lunaris resemble the moon itself in both color and personality. Slightly aloof and quieter personalities are common here, and many with stars and moon markings are welcomed eagerly. Despite the honest preference for those who resemble the colors of the nighttime, all ponies are welcomed as long as they are nocturnal and respectful of the herd. The herd greatly values those who are clever and quick on their feet, as physical strength is not typically something the herd believes is needed for survival. The ability to find you way out of any situation is important and their young are immediately trained to think instead of attack.

tab The herd is tightly knit, although the Moon Seer remains to themselves when not tending to herd needs. In fact, the Moon Seer is probably one of the most aloof members of the herd, although she does actively protect the herd and is quick to resolve any hostile situations. The herd also is considered the sister herd of Solaris, as the Moon Seer and Sun Seer are related and the herds share the same home, switching at their respective times to sleep within the nearby camps.

tab Lunaris does share their materials and food with Solaris, as it seems fair since they're sharing the same turf. Some members even share camps with their Solaris family members, as some families are split within the herds. Solaris is seen as their other half, and while they don't often understand their warmer and more energetic counterpart they still speak fondly of them. Except... the Moon Seer, she seems to withhold her tongue for some strange reason when Solaris is brought up.

      User Image
tab The Lunaris Herd lives within camps situated near a lake and several caves. They've chosen Dream Valley for its more neutral weather and territory. As the herd believes in staying with one another, they've created a large campsite. They have internet and electricity thanks to generators, and their tents are nothing to scoff at, almost replicating smaller homes. Some larger families have claimed a tunnel in the nearby caves and built their homes within them. There's been talk about making log cabins, although they're waiting to grow bigger before doing so.

tab They aren't far from Everville, making it easy to obtain supplies and have emergency access to nearby hospitals. They are not forbidden from leaving camp and exploring, however they're expected to make a home within the camp. Lunaris is not currently nomadic and they have one location, although this can change over time.

tab The Moon Seer has claimed a small cave for themselves, where their future family will reside. This cave is a bit secluded and overlooks the entire camp. They've already begun the process of turning it into a neat house. One would be surprised how cozy a cave can be if revamped.

      User Image
tab The moon is of great importance to the Lunaris, as they function solely when it is out. This means celestial events can something perturb or excite the herd. Meteor showers are viewed as unlucky days, as they believe the sky is angry for an unforeseen reason. Solar and lunar eclipses are viewed as excellent luck and one of the few times they may even decide to be awake with the Solaris herd and spend an entire day with them.

tab New moons are considered something of great evil, resulting in the entire herd retreating into their homes and avoiding the world around them. Without the protection of the moon, the herd believes evil runs rampant. Those of a darker nature might enjoy the evening, but the herd might gossip about those particular ponies.

tab Children born with stars or moon edits or markings are viewed as closely related to the moon and often seen with higher standing within the herd.

      User Image
tab While Lunaris tries not to favor certain types of members over others, they aren't successful. First, the Moon Seer is the leader and respected by most. Those who challenge the Moon Seer or refuse to obey to direct orders are often neglected by most members or even banished in extreme circumstances. Due to the Moon Seer's celestial markings and edits, they're seen as a "piece of the moon" by some of the more spiritual members.

tab The Second, elected by the Moon Seer themselves, is the second-in-command, however this does not make them next in line to be Moon Seer (despite how some members feel!). The Second protects the Moon Seer and is their closest confidant. They know all the small on-goings of the herd and often report back to the Moon Seer. They have permission to act on their own free will, as long as they aren't abusing any rules. It's safe to say if the Second orders something they're backed up by the Moon Seer.

tab While the Moon Seer and Second are the direct line of powers, those with celestial markings often find themselves in a higher position than other members solely by bias. In the same vein, members with sun-like colors or markings might find their opinions disregarded here and there. This is often acknowledged by various members within the herd, but until either a new Moon Seer arrives or the current one can be successfully swayed it seems to be a problem that will persist.

tab Those directly related to the Moon Seer or mated to the Moon Seer or Second also seem to hold more sway in conversations and herd matters, although the heir (the one who will directly take the Moon Seer title once it is free) gets most freedom.

      User Image
tab The Lunaris believe that family isn't just limited to blood; those considered family can be close friends, too. They also believe it's possible to outcast someone who has greatly hurt or shamed their family, although it isn't used commonly.

tab Romance is something quietly celebrated, as most Lunaris members like to keep their lives private. However, lifemating (a term used by the herd, otherwise known as marriage) are a big deal, as it's believed two (or more) families are merging into one and is cause for a small party under the moonlight. The Lunaris, however, are very cautious of romance outside of the herd and greatly encourage those pursuing it to bring their intended one into the herd. Outsiders could possibly hurt the herd or bring along problems the herd isn't necessarily prepared for. While they try and be welcoming to those not within the herd or even those intending to join, it takes a bit to win their trust.

tab Romantic relationships with someone diurnal or within Solaris is heavily discouraged, as that is essentially signing up to live a life where you never see your partner unless sleeping or during an eclipse. It's not impossible, but the herd will generally believe your relationship is doomed if you try and engage in it. However, friendships with those who are diurnal are hardly batted an eye at, especially since Solaris and Lunaris exchange children if they have those who prefer the other way of life more than the one they were born into.

      User Image
tab Children are expected to learn about each role and prepare to take one. While Lunaris loves and welcomes new children, their reaction to foals is far more educational than anything else. It's a chance to raise a new generation of the herd. Children are allowed to play, but they're taken aside for most of the night to focus on studies and training. They also are encouraged to switch to Solaris if they do not feel nocturnal, and they'll even allow their foals to spend a few weeks within Solaris so they know what life is like with the sun. They don't want to raise foals who might panic if, during an emergency, the herd must travel during daytime.

tab Foals have a much quieter life within Lunaris, but they grow into capable adults with a multitude of skills, such as; knowing a little about every role, the ability to swim, the ability to hunt at a young age, reading the stars, and understand the constellation.

      User Image
tab Lunaris does not necessarily have an official naming theme, although obviously ponies with celestial or nighttime related names are preferred. Various different names for the moon is an extremely common name to bestow on a foal, as well as star-related names.

Lunaris does all major ceremonies during the night. While unplanned events such as a birth or death during the daytime obviously happen, any ceremonies attached follow once the moon is up. Nothing is doing during a new moon, meaning any ceremonies normally held on that day will be pushed to following day.

      User Image
Once a foal reaches adulthood they are given their role. Their family and friends gather as the Moon Seer announces what they'll become. Any protests towards their new role will be often considered only once the new adult has tried their role for half a year. Being given a role is considered the moment you're officially a useful member of the herd, and as such not many protest what they're given.

Note; You as the owner get to choose the role. It is up to you how your character feels about it.

      User Image
Those who join are met with a quiet excitement, although it takes a bit for the herd to entirely trust the newcomer. Those who join are allowed to watch other members at their roles and are trained much like foals were; given multiple lessons in each role before they're given their role by the Moon Seer. The night they receive their role is considered the night they're officially a member and often the herd is far more welcoming at this point.

tab Solaris and Lunaris sometimes have children who are inclined towards the other side. The herds exchange kids regularly. A Solaris pairing might have a child who is nocturnal. That's okay! They'll be adopted into Lunaris.

It's a sad day when a friend has to leave, but some members may want to leave for a multitude of reasons. Leaving on good terms is met with a sad goodbye party, and those close to the member will give them trinkets to remember them by. The member is allowed to visit the herd whenever they wish.

      User Image
Those who end up banished are quickly exiled the moment the punishment is given. Reserved only for those who are a threat to the herd or have shown no interest in being a functioning part of the herd, banishment often means they'll never be allowed to step on herd lands. After the member is gone those close to them will often toss out trinkets given to them by that pony. Their name is only spoken in whispers or hushed voices.

      User Image
Coming together as one family is a big deal. Lifemating is a term the herd uses to indicate those in the relationship have promised themselves to one another. It is a marriage, but they rarely use the societal term for it. A massive party is thrown and the united members are showered with gifts by herd members. It's not uncommon for some of the older herd members to even try and whisper about foals at the newly wed members!

      User Image
Birth is a quiet affair, as usually packs are quietly born within their parents cave and the Second visits to ensure they're healthy before announcing to the herd about the new lives. The parents are offered double the food to ensure the foals have healthy and strong parents, and often the herd takes turns visiting the foals. Babies born on a full moon are seen to have especially bright futures and gifts may be given. Babies born on a new moon, however, are viewed with superstition.

Death is another quiet ceremony, as the herd believes when one dies they return to the moon. It's the next stage of life, and to them where they'll all meet. However, it's sad to consider they'll never seen them while alive, and so some members decide to decorate the graves and eat the deceased's favorite meal to remember them by.

More traditions will be added as the herd develops and grows. Some may be removed or adjusted depending on who the current Moon Seer is. We are taking suggestions, please offer holiday ideas!

      User Image
Role Ceremony: Children who are old enough to have a role will stand before the herd. The Moon Seer will announce their role (owners can PM Nymphiea to pick the role for their pony) and the herd will celebrate with a feast and moon bathing.
Night of Silence: Death is met with a quiet mourning. While they do believe those who die return to the night sky, they acknowledge they'll miss the presence of their herd member. Direct family take a vow of silence for the night while others will present gifts to the family. The dead are buried in a local graveyard.
Night of Feasting: New births are celebrated with a party. Gifts are provided to the parents, most of which are functional for the infants to use immediately. The first night of their birth is met with partying and a naming ceremony, where the parents will announce the names of their new bundle(s) of joy.
Full Moon: The night of a full moon is viewed as a specially fortunate and lucky night. Ponies will gather for a meal and celebrate, but also they'll be encouraged to accomplish goals they've been pushing off.
New Moon: Nights of the new moon are viewed as bad luck. Ponies will mostly stay in-doors and keep to themselves.
Solar/Lunar Eclipse: These events are one of the only reasons the herd may be awake during the morning to celebrate with the Solaris Herd. This is a time to make wishes for a brighter future and bond with the rest of their herd and the Solaris Herd.
Lifemating: Also known as marriage, lifemating events result in a quiet party where the herd members will celebrate the joining of those marrying.

      User Image
Thousand Meteor Shower: Takes place on the 15th of August. Every year, a beautiful meteor shower takes place the entire night, making the sky look as if thousands of jewels are streaking by. The ponies settle out and watch the sky as a group.

      User Image
Night of Frights: Takes place on the 31st of October. This is the only time they allow outsiders onto their land without a reason. They give out candies to children who arrive and also supervise their own children, who are allowed to leave the herd lands with their family for the night.
Feast of Plenty: Takes place of the last Thursday of November. It is a night of settling with those you care for and bonding over a large feast.

      User Image
Remembrance Night: Takes place on the 1st of November. The herd will spend the night telling stories of the herd. Newer members will learn of events older ones went through.
Giving Night: Takes place on the 22nd of December. Ponies give presents to those they care for and gather together for celebrations. The holiday is centered around cherishing those close to you and spending time with family. Often, the gift symbolizes their relationship, and it's common for those close to the pony receiving the gift to help the giver pick one out.
New Years Eve: Takes places on December 31st. Ponies gather and discuss their hopes for the next year. The Moon Seer gives out small gifts to show their gratitude to the herd.

These are the current roles for the herd, which may grow as the herd grows. They are ordered in rank of power. We are accepting role ideas.

      User Image
tab The Moon Seer is the leader of the herd. They are the member seen with the most respect. While there may be a few individuals who do not agree with the Moon Seer, it's common for those ponies who speak against the leader to be met with a general cold shoulder from the herd. The Moon Seer is seen as the one closest to the moon. Their orders are law and they are the first on the hierarchy scale.

tab The Moon Seer cannot be thrown out by other member by normal means. Generally, the only way a Moon Seer stops their duties are either due to death or grave sickness. Moon Seer's also do not rule alongside their mates; there is typically only one Moon Seer.

      User Image
tab The Second is the second-in-command. While they answer to the Moon Seer and ensure anything they order is approved by them, The Second can command the herd. Typically, they're useful when the Moon Seer is busy with another task, or is far away. When the Moon Seer needs to tend to important matters it is The Second the ponies look to.

tab The Second is not next in line to become Moon Seer, despite how some ponies feel about the matter. When the Moon Seer step down, the Heir steps in. The Moon Seer can remove The Second from their position.

      User Image
tab The one selected to take over once the Moon Seer steps down. While typically it's expected the Heir will be direct family to the Moon Seer, it's up to the Moon Seer who they select. They do not have any say in official matters, but they're slowly prepared in how to take care of the herd. Usually, they're assigned to each role briefly to learn how every member adds to the herd.

      User Image
tab Guards are the protectors of the herd. Very few ponies receive this role due to the trust the entire herd has to put into the Guards. Every night a few patrol the grounds to ensure strangers don't slip in. They meet visitors first and send the request to visit to the Moon Seer. When physical conflict begins against their herd they are sent to deal with it.

      User Image
tab Due to how must the herd hates outsider influence, they train members in how to take care of the herd themselves. These ponies are Healers and are as skilled as a traditional doctor. Very few ponies have this role, as they need to prove their adept skill in healing. While the herd hates outsiders, they will send away ponies to study healing professionally if the pony shows promise. When they return they'll officially begin their role.

      User Image
tab Nannies are incredibly important to the herd, as they protect and raise the young. They are the teachers and guardians of their children. They often will begin coaching the children in the herd ways and traditions. Nannies are taught combat skills to ensure children are safe at all times.

      User Image
tab The herd is essentially creating its own little town. While a lot of homes are built into the surrounding caves, not all ponies wish to live in these. The herd also has their own hospitals, care centers, common buildings, and more. Builders are skilled in creating these structures and spend most of their time adding buildings to the herd.

      User Image
tab Collectors gather things for the herd! They are the ones who leave the herd the most. They collect herbs, food, needed essentials, and more. Ponies may make requests to the Collectors, but it's ultimately up to them how far they wish to go to achieve these requests.

      User Image
tab These are the ponies who effectively lack a role. Mostly children have this role, but those who have yet to earn their title are also placed in this category. Very rarely a pony will not be deemed ready for a role. This is incredibly rare and seen as shameful.

tab Prior to the creation of the herd there were two ponies; Sola and Luna. While both shared a mother, Sola (the eldest) lost her father the year she was born. Luna's father was selected on a whim to create a child, which the mother would come to regret. Disappointed in her choice and the child it bore, the mother left Luna's father and proceeded to remind Luna about the "failure" that was their father.

tab This bred resentment. Sola adored her sister but Luna resented the sun-colored sibling. Every achievement Luna made was ignored while Sola was praised. As the two aged Luna began to try harder to make a name for herself, but her mother only cared for her sister. When the two became adults a mysterious incident occurred. Luna and the mother went, alone, to gather precious gems when the mother met an untimely demise. Luna claimed she was too traumatized to explain what happened -- or so she claimed.

tab Sola trusted in her sister. Luna stayed with her sister, as it seemed life was easier when she was with Sola. Sola was naturally charismatic and charming, ponies wanted to help her. Luna was quieter and didn't reach out to others. She rarely got anywhere in life by herself.

tab Not until Sola ran home speaking of a herd idea. The two had always looked to the heavens with respect and admiration. Their mother was incredibly spiritual when it came to the sky and it had passed to her children. Unfortunately, neither of the sisters could agree on their own beliefs. Luna believed the moon was her one true friend while Sola trusted in the power the sun gave her.

tab Luna was interested in having power for once. Having a group who respected her ideals and actually cared for her was enticing. So she was the one to come up with the idea of Solaris and Lunaris; two dueling herds who shared the same territory but lived among it at different times. Sola loved it and agreed.

tab They found the location easily. Settling into their territory took longer -- they had to revamp caves to house ponies. Luna was delighted by the change in her life. Becoming nocturnal was natural; she had always preferred the night. That, and she welcomed not seeing Sola much anymore. The less she had to see her sister, the better.

      User Image
tab Sola and Luna have not spoken to one another outside of general herd planning. The herds have just opened and they've been busy beginning their futures. Luna holds a hostile resentment towards Sola and her herd, but she hides it incredibly well. Her hatred for Solaris and Sola has been masked with quiet smiles and reserved conversations, keeping it undetectable. Unfortunately for Sola, she's not happy with the sharing arrangement any longer.

tab It seems Luna is up to something... but what that may be is currently unknown.

tab There's a plot in place for the development of the herd. This will require more characters who wish to join in said plot to appear, but this is entirely optional to partake in. Your pony can remain shocked by the development and not see behind the scenes.

tab Currently, the idea is that Luna is not entirely a benevolent and kind leader, despite what her exterior says. She is cruel, cold, and destructive. On the outside, Luna is friendly, wise, and caring. That is far from the truth. Ultimately, her goal is to murder Sol -- she just isn't strong enough yet.

tab Luna will be seeking either a long-term partner or flings. She will be reproducing and building a family with her darker intent. She will select an heir who is her own child and she will attempt to manipulate her family into her plan. She also will be finding ponies she can trust within the herd who also may hold hatred or dislike for Solaris and bring them into her schemes. The goal is to split Lunaris in half -- the normal ponies who care for the moon and the darker side who hides behind smiles.

tab Eventually, she will try and murder Sol and be caught doing so. She will flee with her ponies and potentially make another herd that focuses on her true nature; darkness. Her heir will stay behind. Her heir did not side with her and might be the reason she was caught (this all needs to be done through RP, so some things WILL change). He will take the position of Moon Seer and restore Lunaris to what it should have been -- a quiet and secluded herd who loves the moon and cares for one another as family.

tab That is where things are planned to go. Anything further has not be decided. If you wish to be added into this plot then please PM Nymphiea! Your pony will play a part within this plot!

tab Joining is pretty simple. All you need is a nocturnal pony. Partaking in the plot behind Luna's overthrow is entirely optional. Have a nocturnal pony who loves the night sky? Then all you need to do is post using the form below! Post the form in this thread! I will quote back a response!

tab If you have a kid who was bred into this herd then please use the second form and post it in this thread!

tab Solaris and Lunaris exchange children. Sometimes, a child from a Solaris pairing is nocturnal. That's okay! They'll come to Lunaris then. Please use the second form as well if this is the case.

Username: Abeno Seimei
Pony Name: Lumina
Pony Cert: foal cert, applying for adult Adult uncert

Brief Personality: Lumina is a shy but excitable pony who is looking for her place in the world.
Nocturnal?: yes
Why Do They Want to Join?: She's wandered for a while, just as her father did, She wants a place where she has a place and can be helpful to others.

Trial Response: Lumina was excited to begin her trial at the start, she found a nice shady spot with a rock and some local flora and sat down. Her thoughts excitedly racing thru her head. Eventually, boredom crept on her and she studied the flora around her. clover, stray Moon lilies from the valley, and dandelions.
She closed her eyes and listened to the calls of birds nearby. Wren, Chickadee, Warbler, Finch, moving into Doves, Jays, and Crows. She wished she had some bird seed with her.

It was still nice, hearing beings she considered 'friends' nearby. She took comfort in that and found her self dozing in the moonlight. Frogs crawl and peep in the damp grass. Moths flutter in the moonlight to be eaten by bats above. Even at night, the circle of life continues.
