Quote: The Holidays are supposed to be a time for cheer, and yet there's something strangely dismal about tonight. You're out by yourself and you pass by a building completely coated in a strange sheet of ice. When you catch your reflection, you're trapped reliving your loneliest moment. The illusion can last for as long or short a time as you like, but the hollow sensation lingers even after the memory fades. What memory did you find yourself reliving and, now that it's over, what are you going to do to shake this mood? Kibirev was chilly tonight. It was quite cold and darker than it seemed reasonable to be. The holidays were almost officially over, and New Years was already here, and she figured perhaps going out and patrolling would do something to shake the gloom that had begun to settle on her without abandon ever since the slightly warm glow of Christmas had faded.
Her parents had given her a month to get out of the house. She was no longer welcome there for reasons that were far beyond her comprehension or control, and she wasn’t sure what to do. She needed a job. A place to live…obviously she could stay with Leander but…but the idea of living in a car made her want to throw up. Or cry. Though she did quite enough of that as it was.
Quietly, the senshi crossed her arms over her chest and tried to daydream about better things, when a sparkle off in the distance caught her eye and she paused, making her way over towards a building that seemed to be fully encased in…in ice?
In the glow of the streetlights, it glistened like a giant gem and for a moment she almost laughed and moved closer, wondering what she would look like reflected in the great cold mass.
When she did catch sight of her reflection, she almost looked distorted, as though it were a fun house mirror that she looked at rather than a frozen building. The ghost of the smile that had been struggling to come back onto her face died after a moment, memories flooding back against her permission.
It started off hazy at first, though the words replayed for the hundredth time in her mind “You know, it’s probably better to have short hair than long hair.”
Bea’s voice. As sweet as it always was in her memory, though cutting like a knife as she fought with it.
Her hair was longer now. Down to her mid back…but almost a year and a half’s worth of growth would do that, wouldn’t it? Didn’t time change everything?
Time did, in fact, change everything.
“So are we gonna beat the daylights outta our desserts like they owe us money or are you gonna tell your buddy why you look like someone ran over your dog - and thenbacked over it for good measure?”
Kibirev tried to laugh as that part of the memory, but the sound came out as a quiet, broken keen instead and she found it difficult to draw in a breath, arms clutching her chest tightly. At some point her knees must have given out, for now she was on the ground, her forehead resting against the ice, eyes open, looking at her pale, startled, agonized reflection in a kind of morbid horror.
“So...are we dating?”
The words still haunted her. Still plagued her. No. They weren’t dating. Could this just end? Could she stop dwelling on this? On the last conversation that she had…the last conversation she would ever have with Beatrice Kellye? On the stupid useless question she had asked that had made the white haired girl never speak to her again?
Another broken keen escaped her throat, and Kibirev didn’t notice that she had begun to cry.
She didn’t notice anything, honestly.

Acubens was hidden deep inside of the wooly folds of her peacoat while she patroled, absently letting out her wraiths as she tapped along the sidewalk, the falls of her clawed pump echoing on the buildings around her. Winter seemed to take forever to get there, but now that it was, it was there with a vengeance. The wind howled around Acubens as she called back the now stuffed and opaque wraiths. She should go home now that she was done... curl up with a blanket and Alois... maybe ask if Lavender wanted to come over. Otherwise, warm up with a nice cup of tea and something to snack on... A sound caught her attention, however, before she could turn to go back home. She couldn't make out what the sound was exactly, but she knew that it wasn't right. And so she did what she always did. She followed the sound to the source regardless of what might be there waiting for her. Lavender would yell at her for it, but she'd deal with that if it was bad news. For now, however, she honed in on the sound, and once she was close enough, searched for an aura, letting out a breath of relief when she felt another dark mirror aura instead of order or, god forbid, negaverse. It quickened her pace and lowered her guard quite a bit. Concern, however, didn't come until she saw Kibirev for the first time since Altea's castle. Acubens stopped short, recalling how distraught the young senshi had been when they had been left with no choice but to fight. How she had condemned them all, but Acubens could not find it in her heart to condemn her. And now the girl was on her knees keening from pain that Acubens could not see. Acubens looked up at the building and saw the funeral parlor again. Despite the throbbing in her chest, however, she steeled herself. She'd been through this once before, hadn't she? She'd already seen this memory. Already lived it twice now. What harm could a third time do? Her memory self reached for the casket lid and Acubens looked away, focusing her attention on Kibirev and not the scene unfolding before her for a second time. "You must be cold," she offered softly, shucking off her peacoat and slinging it across the other senshi's shoulders.

Kibirev was utterly oblivious of any other sort of power signature and didn’t hear anyone walking up. The sudden weight of the peacoat startled her out of the ball of misery that had encompassed her and she gave a squeak of surprise, looking up into the face of…of…
What color was left in her face drained away almost at once as her mind placed the face in her memory. The crazy senshi who had been so hell bent on killing Altea.
“I…I…” Her mind was struggling to make sense of what was going on. She felt hollow and empty, and just a little big angry at the sight of this older senshi…but…she was stronger now too…and…
…And she had been cold. The coat felt really nice around her shoulders.
Suddenly Kibirev swallowed hard and simply nodded, the tears which had been stilled, starting to make their way back down her cheeks. “…Yeah I am…” Altea was gone…but she might have been beyond their saving really…she had accepted that a while ago…even if it hurt to think about.
Besides. Hating the other Dark Mirror Senshi wouldn’t bring her back. She knew that to be as sure as she knew her name.

Acubens stood stock still and stone-faced against the reflection of the memory that she was seeing for the second time. Her mother had just pushed past the memory of herself and was sobbing on the other side of the room. Acubens watched as her memory self ran. Watched her brother gaze after her. Watched him put the pieces together. Suddenly she realized, with renewed pain, that this memory was not being seen through her eyes, but rather a silent spectator. Was this really, then, a memory? Or a fictionalization based on memory, with outcomes Acubens would rather see than the truth? Her arm acted on it's own, lashing out to strike the reflective surface of the building as the memory faded to black. The ice echoes and the shock sent waves of pain up her arm, but nothing else happened. Lavender would scold her about the bruises later, but she'd have to explain that she had no choice. And this time her target hadn't stuck back so there was also that. "So you saw something too," Acubens asked softly, dropping to her knees so that she was eye level with Kibirev. "Seems like this bullshit has been ******** with more than a few people around town." Acubens sighed, trying to smooth over her rattled nerves as she spoke. "Leave it to Destiny City, am I right?"

Kibirev jumped as Acubens suddenly punched the building and for a moment her eyes widened, pupils dilating in fear, worried that she had said something wrong, something that had upset the stronger senshi…and that now she was going to be punished for siding with Altea.
Oh well. She supposed that she had it coming, but she couldn’t quite stop the way that she pulled back, almost falling on her backside as Acubens came down to her level, nor the whimper of fear that made its way past her lips, one hand going up to protect her face.
The words confused her though. Saw something? What…what was she to have…
The senshi began to tremble then, the thoughts coming back into her mind with a vengeance, and the feeling of hopelessness that came with them rocked her to her very core.
“…My friend. It was her and…she’s gone. She’s just gone and it’s my fault.” The words were muffled, and at the end of it all, she broke down once again, body trembling with the violence of her sobs.

Kibirev recoiled from Acubens and the older senshi's heart ached. She had just been so angry at whatever magic had twisted her emotions and the emotions of someone far more innocent. And then her heart shattered even further when Kibirev started sobbing. Acubens had to fight the urge to attack the building again, no matter how useless it was. Kibi, no matter what she had done with Altea, felt -- no, she knew in her heart that what she had done was right, and what right had Acubens to condemn her. Hell, Acubens couldn't even remember who cast the first stone, Altea or one of them. Maybe they could have reasoned with Altea and things would have gone better. But they hadn't. And now one of their own was frightened and alone and Acubens had to help. So she leaned forward to catch Kibirev in her arms and held her. tight enough to reassure, but not so tight that any desired escape would not be possible. "Look, sweetie," Acubens sighed, her anger quickly fizzling out and replacing itself with something much softer and more nurturing, "I don't know who your friend is, but her being gone is in no way your fault." Was this person leaving a result of the fiasco with Altea? If it was, then their leaving Kibi definitely said more about them than the senshi in Acubens' arms. "If you don't want to talk about it, then that's okay. But I doubt anything that you did drove her away."

The embrace caused the senshi to stiffen. She had been expecting a blow, not a hug…and certainly not such a reassuring embrace…not from this of all people…
Kibirev swallowed hard and shook her head. Acubens didn’t know anything. She really didn’t. “It is my fault…I loved her…I wanted to be…to be her girlfriend and…she never answered and…she called me Kelly instead of something dumb and…and I just…I was feeling so awful and I went to bed but…she…I…”
The tears were beginning to fall faster now and her shoulders began to shake with sobs as she flung herself into the hug, thin arms wrapping themselves around Acubens.
“It…it’s been over a year…and she hasn’t called…and I haven’t seen her…and why didn’t I just keep my mouth shut? We…we kissed when…when we were with Altea and…I just…” Kibirev drew away and wiped at her face with a gloved hand. “Have you seen her? She was the black and white senshi that was…was with me…L-lovejoy…”
Because maybe something had happened but…
…if that were the case someone would have told her…
Right?

There were two ways Acubens' embrace could have gone. It could have been accepted or rejected. Violently, if she recalled Kibi half as well as she thought it was. Or, well... violently for Kibirev. And as the younger senshi stiffen in her arms, Acubens readied herself for a rather rough shove as well as the possibility of losing Kibirev all together, but if there was one thing she had learned from Lavender it was to just go for it. Reach out and hold and anchor. So that was what she did. She anchored Kibirev. And Kibirev broke down. Acubens herself relaxed into Kibirev's returned embrace and rubbed her hand in circles around the younger senshi's back. Half of what the other senshi said made no sense to Acubens, but she tried to piece it together as best she could. "I've not seen her. I'm sorry. Oh, honey, I know. I know it hurts. And I can sit here and tell you that it's going to get better all that I want, and even if it is true, it won't make a lick of difference for you right now, will it?" Acubens knew that it wouldn't. Because she remembered the absolute agony of driving Lavender away. "I drove someone I love away too, Kibi," she whispered gently into crystal-colored hair. "Except I had the opposite problem. I kept my mouth shut when I needed to say something. Anything."

The comfort was well needed, and as Kibirev finally began to get a hold of herself, she sighed heavily. “I’m sorry…I…I don’t know why…I let myself…”
She tried to focus on what Acubens was saying. About driving someone away. But she shook her head. “…I don’t know. I’ll…get over it...I…”
Kibirev wiped at her eyes hastily, trying to get rid of every trace of tears. “I’m sorry…if…if you ever see her…”
Her eyes closed for a moment and there was a physical pain in her chest as she thought of what to ask. “…Please don’t mention me. Just…l-let me know if she’s all right…I just…if she’s hurt. Or g-gone…” Kibirev’s voice trailed off and she shrugged again, swallowing hard. “…At…least I’ll know. And I’ll know it wasn’t my fault…I…I just don’t want to say anything anymore. My mouth gets me into so much trouble…and one day I’ll learn…I’m…sorry to bother you…”
And she was. Not to mention now that she was somewhat calmer…thoughts of the fight with Altea kept slipping into her mind and she found she couldn’t quite keep her gaze on Acubens.
Perhaps in time…that would fade too.

Kibirev pulled away and Acubens allowed her too, releasing her as she disengaged. "Honey," Acubens said gently, wiping away tear stains with gentle finger pads, "It's not a matter of getting over it. Pain isn't made to be gotten over; it's not an enemy. It's just a tool, like everything else life gives us. Pain is just a little more difficult to use, that's all. And as the hurt lessens, it gets easier to use." Her voice was gentle as she spoke, like her fingers. Barely above a whisper, as though anything louder might frighten Kibirev away. She'd been so worried about the younger senshi since Altea... Acubens didn't want to frighten her away now. "There are lessons to be learned in pain, as well. We grow the most through our hardships. they're called growing pains, after all." Acubens laughed through her nose at her own joke. "To evolve we must struggle. I'm excited to see what you evolve into... if you'll let me see, that is." And gods knew this young lady had suffered and struggled enough to be able to see the truth in what Acubens was saying. Acubens could see it clear as day in her eyes. Hear it like crystal in her voice. "So. What are you going to do with this pain? You don't have to answer me now or tomorrow or ever. But you do need to answer yourself. And you'll know that answer when you come to it. You'll feel it." She tapped Kibirev's sternum with a gentle pointer finger, "right here. And as for your friend, I'll keep an eye out. If I see her I'll let you know. How many back and white senshi can possibly be running around, after all?"

She finally was able to look at Acubens again, frowning slightly, though feeling a little bit of warmth from her words. Maybe…the loud…violent senshi was right. About this at any rate, and finally Kibirev felt herself nodding, and even managed a little laugh when her newfound…friend?
…Maybe not a friend right now…but with time…maybe she could tame her insecurities around Acubens and they could turn into warm feelings and maybe she could actually learn to like this older senshi a bit more.
The senshi drew in a breath and nodded, reaching her own hand up to wipe away the rest of her tears. “I think…I can do this. You’re right. Maybe. I’ll…figure it out…but don’t…don’t go looking for her. And don’t…tell her about me…I don’t think. She’s moved on…and I’m the one who’s stuck in the past. I don’t want to force myself on her…and I just…have to get over it…That’s all. I’ll get there. Maybe.”
Someday. She had to or she’d end up just cracking like a piece of glass which just fell to the floor.
“…It just hurts right now. A lot. But don’t…don’t bother her if you find her…please.”
Kibirev got shakily to her feet and shook out her body, stiff from being curled up so tightly. She didn’t look at the wall, in fact, she kept her eyes so firmly away from it her neck was beginning to hurt and her head was starting to pound from the strain. “Maybe…We’ll run into one another again someday…you and me, I mean…I…I might like that. Maybe.”
So long as she didn’t go after her queen again.
“…See you around, Acubens…”
She glanced at the woman and gave a small smile before hurrying away, arms crossed tightly over her chest.
There was a lot to think about…and right now it was too much.
She could think later. For now she just wanted to find her bed and get into it. Nothing else could be a certainty...but the warmth of her blankets was one she couldn't deny.
