Quote:
Sprigs of mistletoe dangle from various spots around the carnival and it becomes abundantly clear that most people are taking advantage of the fun holiday tradition, be it a cute peck on the cheek or an opportunity for some gross PDA. You happen to notice a crush or loved one standing under one of the sprigs and on a whim, you decide to adhere to timeless tradition and give them a kiss (even if it means mustering up your courage and getting over your shyness to make it happen). When you open your eyes, you soon realize... that wasn't your crush/loved one at all, but a total stranger! Oh no!

Prudence Frost wrinkled her nose as yet another person passed by, deliberately ignoring the colorful flyer extended out in her hand.

While she would have much preferred mingling around with the rest of the shoppers at the winter carnival that had popped up, she'd been asked to devote the majority of her Saturday handing out flyers for the upcoming Christmas Eve service at her church. The youth minister was having difficulty finding willing volunteers for the "mission" and had resorted to asking some of his favorite pupils, even despite the fact she'd aged out of the youth services and was now in a young adult's study after worship service on Sundays.

She didn't have the heart to tell him no - especially when it was promoting one of the church's most special services. They went all out with the music, they had the bell players come in and the two choir sets filled the stands behind the pulpit... it was absolutely beautiful and a true shame for anyone to miss it.

This could be an opportunity to bring even more people into the figurative flock... so she supposed giving up a few hours of personal time for the sake of her church wasn't a bad thing.

Another jewel in her heavenly crown, as her mother would say.

Frowning, she took a few steps forward to try to offer the green construction paper to the crowd of teenagers passing, who, as a whole, deliberately ignored her attempts to simply take a piece of paper.

Ugh.

Did anyone actually have manners nowadays??

Somehow, one Austin Lynch had found himself at the Winter Carnvial. It had been approximately one hour since he'd arrived and at some point, he thought he had a date. Or maybe it was two. It was hard to say, considering whomever he'd shown up with was no longer by his side.

Which, didn't really bother him, even if it might've eventually bothered whomever he'd brought. Or had they brought him? He couldn't quite remember, which could have been a side effect of the hot rum he'd down a cup or two (or three) upon arrival. Mixed with some of the painkillers from his latest race related injury and well...a bad time.

But Austin Lynch was a man who lived on the edge and didn't slow down. (He'd learned his lesson, but there was nothing he could do about it now.)

And that was why he'd been wandering around the carnival looking for whomever it was that he'd come with, certain that if he saw them, he'd recognize them as his date. Or they'd be huffy and stomp up to him and shove their finger in him and nagnagnag whatever.

As he walked he spotted a girl with a short almost a-line cut and the frame looked right. s**t what was his date's name?

Piper...Phoebe...Paige?

"Paige!" He called, even as he crossed over to her, hands circling her waist to turn her as his head dipped down to smooch the girl under the mistletoe that hung overhead.

There were hands grabbing her around the waist, flipping the unsuspecting woman around as she heard a low voice address someone else - a Paige? She wasn't a Paige at all - sure, her name was mistaken all of the time but it had never been mistaken for a Paige, of all things. That was a new one.

Prudence's eyes widened as her body naturally began to curl up defensively in response to the sudden, unwanted touching. Elbows pressed inwards as muscles tightened, the large stack of flyers pressed against her chest and mouth as all it took was a matter of seconds for the very, very tall, young looking man to start leaning down towards her.

No -- he wasn't just leaning down.

His mouth made connection with her upper lip and half of the stack of flyers, the smell of alcohol and sweetness filling her nostrils as he neared her. Gut reaction of being manhandled and kissed by a stranger had Prudence's knee jerking upwards at the same time as her hands moved out, attempting to fend off the attacker with her stack of church flyers.

"N-Nooo!! What are you doing?"

This stranger tried to kiss her! He tried to kiss her!

She wasn't thinking at that point - no, all she wanted to do was get away from this stranger danger and the only weapon she had was herself and a stack of apparently unwanted flyers. Well, the fact no one was wanting a flyer would come in handy, adding to the thickness of the stack as she proceeded to try to thwack the young man with it, over and over again.

Her first kiss - halfway stolen from her!!!

Fog brain didn't allow for Austin to really pay too much attention to the fact that the chick didn't really respond when he called her name. But, he was pretty certain he'd recognized her by the fine a** and hair cut to go with it that he hadn't bothered to think twice when he'd grabbed her. Lips brushed the edge of a mouth and then he got a mouthful of flyers and, even worse, he'd received a knee to the gut.

Really, the defensive reaction to his greeting should have tipped him off but clarity was not something he was feeling particularly strongly in that moment and he let go once the squealing started.

Green eyes blinked at her, brows furrowing together when he ran his thumb across his swelling (and not from something fun mind you) mouth. He had, attempted to anyway, opened his mouth to say something-- maybe even an apology --but the girl was whacking him with her stack of flyers and Austin was retreating, arms raising only to block the worst of the blows.

Why the ******** did getting smacked with those flyers hurt so bad? It was just paper!

"Whoa, whoa, stop." He tried, eventually going to grab her by the wrists. It was a firm grip that was designed only to get her to stop beating him and once she did, he let go.

"s**t. You're not Paige." Well that explained her reaction. He sighed, ran fingers through his messy, curly locks. "********. Um, sorry. There was mistletoe," he pointed up like it would explain everything, "and I thought you were someone else."

Austin was offering an apologetic smile at least, hands held up in the air in a surrender like pose. "Seriously. My bad." He apologized because he didn't want the chick to start thwapping him again.

The thwapping continued until freakishly long fingers wrapped around her wrists and forced her to stop. Clearly the man was successfully deterred from his surprise smooching and she eventually, eventually pulled the abused flyers against her chest instead of using her energy to utilize them as her personal weapon.

He seemed equally startled by her reaction and his explanation, as lame as it was, made sense. The mistaken identity paired with the berries and leaves looming overhead made for an absolutely embarrassing equation.

Eyes glanced up at the offensive mistletoe berries in question before huffily returning her glare to the obscenely tall young man.

"Well... Well you should look before you kiss!!"

The flushing across her face was spreading to her neck and collarbone, Prudence's heart still pounding in her chest as adrenaline coursed through her veins. She'd almost lost her very first kiss to a complete stranger who hadn't even wanted to kiss Prudence for being Prudence. Talk about being saved by quick reflexes - gah.

"Here, you need this."

Fingers snatched the first flyer from her stack and she shoved it at the young man, wrinkling her nose before Pru turned on her heels and stormed away. The rest of the youth group and church members could distribute the rest of the flyers - she was certainly done for the rest of the day.

The chick seemed to calm down, a little, and Austin kept his distance, mostly. His mouth opened, a defensive retort ready to fall off his tongue before he clamped it shut. She'd think whatever she wanted, it wasn't worth the impending argument if he even tried so he stuck his hands in his pockets and shrugged at her.

It was probably worse to say that he'd forget about it pretty quickly and she should too.

He caught the flyer when it was shoved against his chest and then he watched her walk away. Green eyes glanced over the thing before he tossed it in the nearest trash can.

He wasn't a bible study kind of guy. Nope.

Austin moved on easily enough, not quite disappearing into the throng of people, but definitely heading away from Miss Prude.
