New Year's Eve has gone awry for you when pretty snowflakes turn into an ugly snowstorm in a matter of minutes. Your walk through the snow (to wherever it is that you were headed to celebrate the new year at) is becoming less magical by the minute and judging by the size of the hail pieces, you need to get out of it fast before you find yourself on the receiving end of some vicious bruises.

Unfortunately, the wind and the snow have made it impossible to navigate through and after a series of twists, turns and attempts to shield yourself from the storm, you find yourself on the doorstep of a clearly neglected cabin-type house. You're not sure where it came from but you don't have much choice but to make your way inside to avoid the fierce weather.

Inside, there's enough wood to make a fire in the fireplace, a small cot with a few dusty quilts, some half-burned candles and several canned goods (all that seem decently aged). You might even be able to find some alcohol hidden away, if you're lucky.

Judging by the way the wind is howling and the snow is piling up, though, it looks like you're going to be bringing in the new year stuck in this unfortunate place - better make due with what you've got!

He’d been on his way to the party for his one hiking group, their plans to go have their news years party out in the woods turning out to maybe have been a bad idea. He’d parked and started making his way up the hillside of the state park when the snow decided to become a hell of a storm. The lighted path flickered once, twice, then faded to a dim yellow for a scant few minutes before going out entirely, much to Tobias’s misfortune. His flashlight and gear was fine, but all his training told him to turn back while he could. His phone reception was s**t, and calling his ‘friends’ and putting them at risk to find him was poor judgement when he could easily backtrack and not have to worry about getting himself lost. At least, that was what he had thought.

The reaity was much different, his flashlight being a bit too dim to shine overly brightly in the distance, and the tree line preventing a lot of the reflected light pollution from reaching the ground and pathways possible. The snow quickly was becoming worse and worse, eventually becoming too cold and too fast- hail forming as a result. And, in increasingly larger sizes as time drew on. A double bad scenario for Tobias, who really did not want a dozen or more tiny bumps and welts from mother nature’s fickle whimsy. As he tried to find his way back to his car, it became apparent he was semi-lost. A damning thing this late in the cold. No signal as he checked his phone, it was only the dark outline of what looked like a building in the distance that gave him any form of comfort.

Though, as he neared, he wondered what a cabin was doing out where it was. A knock and no response, he tried loud banging- only for the door to swing open. It was warm he noticed, the wave of tepid warmth hitting his face as he peered inside. No one seemed to be present. Reluctant to step in and invade someone’s abode, but fearing the cold and hail more, Tobias did eventually step in. It seemed to have been abandoned in a way, which was fine by him. The fireplace- he was survivalist at heart, and got quickly started on making a blaze. While the cabin itself was warmer than the outside, it wasn’t by much, if anything at least the lack of wind and wet snow and hail wouldn’t be present. Didn’t mean it still was not ‘cold’.

After starting a fire, and lighting a few candles and placing them in safe locations, he took stock of his surroundings. Old canned goods. Nothing too telling of the occupants- also no phone signal. He did write and attempt to send a text to his friends, at least informing them of his attempt and current status. As he checked the clock her frowned. He was stuck, given the snow and lack of light. Some new year this was turning out to be.
