Quote: Among the nearby winter wonderland festivities sits a natural-made skating rink, constantly covered in men and women of all ages and all range of skill - some skate like pros and some are clearly new to the sport. As you make your way onto the ice, you seem to be doing fine… that is, until a wayward snowball comes hurtling in your direction -- look out! Hands find their way around you… have you been saved by a friend, or perhaps a good Samaritan that was skating by? Do they manage to keep you standing or did you manage to take them down with you? One thing's for certain...not even the most professional of ice skaters could have prepared themselves for that! Nathan was glad the ice rink was not too, too busy this evening. It was not the private skating fun he thought it would be, of course, but at least there was plenty of space for them to move around and not risk running into anyone.
Not that he would: he was a great skater, and he knew it. Of course, he knew he was great at just about everything. Sure, age and maturity had tempered his cockiness quite a bit, but now and then he wanted to show off just to prove he still had it.
Plus, he needed to make sure Elle never got too comfortable with him. Keep her on her toes, and always having fun.
"Here you go," he said, offering Elle the skates he had been carrying for both of them. His were from a period in his high school days when he was really, really into hockey. Mostly the part where he got to run into people and start fights. Needless to say, he was not on the team long. He actually picked her up a pair by scoping out her shoe size and putting a rush order in online.
It was lucky she'd agreed to come along, or he would be out a good chunk of his wages.
"If you think you're going to fall, do it away from me so I can get a good view, okay?"

"When did you even have time to get these?" Ellie was saying as she took the offered skates and worked on pulling off her winter boots. When Nathan had suggested they go skating down at the winter carnival she'd thought the idea sounded fun, but hadn't assumed it'd been more of a fly by night sort of idea. The brand new skates he'd just handed her said otherwise. He'd had to figure out her size, pick them up without her knowing about it. It was all very sneaky. But in an incredibly thoughtful way. They fit great, too, which Ellie hadn't been expecting. The last time she'd been skating the rentals she'd had were clunky and stiff and not terribly comfortable. These were softer, laced up over her ankle. Elegant and simple, and felt nice on her feet. She was on her blades, picking her way towards the edge of the rink when his comment had her pausing to stare out at him. "A good view of me falling?" Ginger brows arched.

"I know a guy," Nate said, with a wink. He grinned at her teasingly, not offering the name of the guy. She would probably catch on when he said it was Amazon. What did it matter, anyway? He was just being prideful for no reason, which was a thing with him.
He moved to help her with her boots and skates, pretty used to lacing skates up from all his violent-sports days. He had his on in no time, getting to his feet and offering her his hands so she could stand without wobbling. He was not sure how good at ice skating she was, if she had ever done it before, so he was going to be there in case she needed to be caught.
Or, if he missed, he at least would offer her a few friendly jokes and laugh it off for her. It was the least he could do, as her fiance. Of course, he was only messing around, and if something did happen to her, he would always be the first to fix the problem.
"Is that what I said? Gee, it sounds mean coming out of your mouth. No, no, of course I wouldn't just watch you fall." He laughed and moved out onto the ice, only needing a few moments to get his bearings before skating back to her and offering her his hands. "Come on, beautiful, let's see you dance on this ice."
While he barreled around like a linebacker, he was sure she would have a lot more grace to her. That was sort of a given in anything they did: he was the big lug, and she was the entrancing siren.

Freckled features smoothed as she watched him glide across the ice before circling back to offer her his hands. She took them gratefully, glad for the extra support as she stepped from snow to ice. It'd been a long time since she'd been on skates, and while she was certain she still knew how, she wasn't so certain her balance would be all that impressive for at least the first few moments. Like him, she needed to gather her bearings. "I don't know about dancing," she hummed, smiling up at him as her feet moved along the ice, propelling her slowly forward. A little rocky at first, but more smoothly as she started to pick up a little speed. It wasn't graceful at first, but she did move delicately, with care. "So how long have you been planning this?" Because she didn't believe that he just knew a guy, and had somehow procured skates for her on short notice, on a whim. Knowing him, he'd been planning this for a little while. He liked to pretend he wasn't a sweetheart, that he was as impulsive and pigheaded as h'd been when they'd first crossed paths. But he hadn't been then, and he certainly wasn't now.

Nate grinned at her, gliding with her and guiding her carefully. He knew it was like riding a bike for most people, but then, not everyone had ever ridden a bike before. Let alone gone skating on ice. He tried not to make too much of a face as he watched her get started, but he could not really help it.
It was a mixture of love and adoration and simply being charmed by her uncertain movements. He followed her dutifully, but got a little distracted as he doted on her.
"Not that long," he said with a shrug. Only since he heard about it opening, which was... well. She did not really need to know all the details, did she? That was what surprises were about, especially this season. He was abut to take her hands and pull her into a faster skate, but he saw a snowball coming at them from the corner of his eye.
Moving on instinct, he took the hit like it was a bullet, turning them so his back was to it and finding his balance thrown. He slipped and ended up landing right on his butt, wincing and wondering who the hell had thrown a snow ball into their date.

She smiled up at him, her expression saying clearly she wasn't buying everything he was selling her but she didn't question him further on it. She liked that he went to these sorts of efforts to try to surprise her. It wasn't what you would expect from someone who acted as tough and stalwart as Nathan, but that's what made it that much more special. He was doing it for her, and she believed she was the only one who's ever gotten to see this side of him, and the only one that ever would. So when he was suddenly turning the both of them to take a snowball in the back it was perfectly in line with his characte, but the presence of the snowball itself was a little shocking. As was Nathan stumbling and landing hard on the ice. "Nathan, are you okay?" In her haste to try to help him up she damn near stumbled herself and had to catch his shoulders to keep from landing on top of him, which started with a yelp and dissolved into laughter when she didn't actually fall.

"Ugh, yeah. Some d**k head must have thought it would be funny to peg a pretty girl with a snow ball," Nate growled, though he did not spot the source of the snowball and no one really seemed like they had done it or even much noticed that it happened. He was not hurt, at least, except his pride.
Which might as well have been a bleeding wound, as far as he was concerned.
He did not take embarrassment well.
Still, seizing an opportunity, he reached up for her and made a plaintive whine. "Help me up," he said, despite being perfectly capable of getting himself to his feet. He was going to pull her down on top of him but she managed to almost take care of that herself and he started laughing.
"Careful there, wobbles," he put his hands on her arms as she braced herself on his shoulders, grinning at her deviously. He tugged her suddenly, aiming to complete what gravity almost made happen and pull her down on top of him. It wasn't fair, after all, that he was the only one slipping and falling.

The laughter continued up until she saw the look on that handsome face--that devious, up to no good look she had seen a thousand times over--she knew what that look meant, and she tried to pull her arms back before he could act on whatever wicked little thought had just popped into his mind. "No. No no, Nathan, don't you da-!" She yelped as he pulled her down on top of him, arm clutching at his shoulders and around his neck as she lost her battle with gravity and collapsed. She landed more or less in his lap, legs shooting out to either side of his hips. It wasn't graceful, not in the least, and her cheeks were flushed as she looked back up at him. But... The sudden close proximity, the warmth she could feel radiating from him. Ellie let her gaze trace the familiar contours of his face before she was cupping his cheeks in her mitten clad palms to draw him down for a heated kiss.

Nathan would not be stopped, and of course succeeded in pulling her down. Gravity was working in his favor, after all, with her on skates and slippery ice. He was careful to catch her, though she managed to land rather perfectly and he grinned at her knowingly.
The kiss was a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. He easily fell into returning it, wrapping his arms around her and chuckling against her lips.
"I didn't know you were this into skating. Or do you just like me playing hero? You know I'm good at that." He watched her, brushing a stray hair from her face gently. He was almost thankful for whoever threw that snowball, even if they had been in the wrong for aiming at his fiance. But hey, at least it brought him to this cozy moment, which he was immensely enjoying.
And would like to continue in a warmer, more private location.
For now, though, he was content to give her another kiss, wanting her to always remember that even if he was the Senshi of Danger, he'd be her knight in shining armor.

She flushed at his comment, freckles standing in sharp contrast against rosy skin as she looked up at him through the veil of her lashes. It'd always been like this for her, with him. From the very first time their lips had met she'd wanted nothing so badly as to feel the warmth of his arms holding her against him for always. Once upon a time that'd been a fools a hope, but they'd managed to challenge possibility to forge their own fate, and it still amazed her, even years after she'd shed the darkness from her core; this was real. It meant from time to time she got a little caught up in the moment. Focus narrowing down exclusively on the man who's lap she was currently sitting on. She'd look at him, feel the brush of a hand or the sound of his voice and the reality would catch up with her. He was her's, now and always. So she smiled now, laughing softly as she ducked her head to nuzzle up beneath the stubble on his chin, breath warm against the line of his neck. "I just love you, is all." She murmured it against his lips as he tipped his head for another kiss.

Nathan watched her lovingly, enjoying the way her skin became rosy with her interest in him. He might not have the same pretty effect to admire, but he was feeling much the same way.
"I love you, too, Elphaba. Come on, let's not waste all this nice warmth out here on an ice pond." He moved to get up, careful not to disrupt her position from his lap too suddenly, opting to pick her up and carry her gallantly across the ice and back to their shoes.
He kissed her and never let himself stray too far away from her. It was not that he was scared of losing the feelings they'd managed to generate so easily, as it was effortless to find a spark with her, but because he was greedy for it.
Once he helped her into her shoes and he had his own back on, both pairs of skates tied together and slung over his shoulder for ease of carrying, he offered her his arm and guided her back toward their car. Home never sounded so good, and he was sure she was thinking the same.
