Quote:
Sprigs of mistletoe dangle from various spots around the carnival and it becomes abundantly clear that most people are taking advantage of the fun holiday tradition, be it a cute peck on the cheek or an opportunity for some gross PDA. You happen to notice a crush or loved one standing under one of the sprigs and on a whim, you decide to adhere to timeless tradition and give them a kiss (even if it means mustering up your courage and getting over your shyness to make it happen). When you open your eyes, you soon realize... that wasn't your crush/loved one at all, but a total stranger! Oh no!

It had taken a little bit of finagling and a small bottle of malt liquor to bribe the other driver Pete, but Katie had somehow managed to sneak her way out of work and into the carnival to see all the lights and action. It had been a last minute ditch, so she was still wearing her Joe n' Pie shirt under her hoodie, but she made some effort to look festive with her hair down and a string of jingle bells that she draped over her neck like they were Mardi Gras beads. Currently, she was mingling with her phone out, texting anybody she knew who might possibly have the night off to try and meet up, eat some gross food and gawk at people. So far, she had no bites.

With a snort, Katie shuffled her phone back into her pocket, ready to give up for the evening when she saw a flash of a familiar silhouette standing under the mistletoe. Was that Sophie? Had she done something to her hair? Katie made no bones about the fact that she was coocoo for cocoa puffs about her, even if it was a pipe dream. Sweet, naive Sophie was always a little too into her books to notice the absolute catch right under her nose, and if it wasn't studying then she was making sad puppy eyes at Austin ******** Lynch, like he didn't have enough skirts to chase. She also might not be into girls the way Katie was,

But there was no sight of Giraffe Boy, and Sophie was standing under the mistletoe, so sweet and naive and kissable. Surely she couldn't fault Katie for a quick little peck on the lips, not when it's Christmas time. She approached from behind the other girl's vision, a mix of a surprise and a prank and a generous heaping of wishful thinking.

"You really oughta watch where you're standing, Soph," Katie greeted warmly, nudging 'Sophie's' shoulder towards her so she could lean in and press a gentle kiss on those lovely, tanned lips. She'd always wondered if Sophie tasted a little bit like grape jelly. They'd make such a cute PB and J together.

"Wh —" Lips met hers in the middle of a question, her eyes bid closed on instinct. No beard grazed her face — Adel must've shaved, she told herself — and his kiss was bolder now, like he finally decided that what he wanted was just as important as what Ayesha wanted. Like he didn't have to play subservient all the time out of fear of playing into the patriarchy. Good changes, she thought. Pleasant changes.

Until she reached and found a swell where there shouldn't be, and Ayesha's eyes opened, and she backed away at once with respect and mistaken identity at the fore of her mind. Her face flushed a rosy red. Was she supposed to wipe her lips? She didn't dislike it, but she was part of a monogamous relationship. And if Adel hadn't seen —

"I thought you were someone else." Sorry wasn't the right word. A quick look around confirmed no Adel in sight among these crowds. "Why did you —" she looked up — "oh." Above her hung a fat wad of mistletoe like a target over her head. Small wonder that more people weren't taking advantage of that little gimmick. She smartly stepped aside, equidistant from her accidental partner.

"Do you do that often?" She didn't taste drunk; Ayesha had to guess it was so.

Katie couldn’t help it--she melted against Sophie, warm and soft and eager. A pleasant warmth spread from her lips across her freckled cheeks, sweet and refreshing like mulled wine, even if neither of them had drank a drop, but in the haze it was the wandering hand that signalled to her that something was up. Fantasy or not, Sophie wasn’t the groping type (at least, not in Katie’s imagination), and so her eyes fluttered open and stared into a gaze that was distinctively not that familiar grape-jelly hue.

She didn’t pull away, but at once Katie winced reflexively, covering her cheeks with her hands. “Oh shi--I...I totally thought you were someone else, uhh--” Now her ears burned instead of her face, looking over the other woman--who certainly was beautiful, for sure, but was only vaguely similar to the girl she’d been looking for. How she saw her girl-next-door heartthrob in this stone-cold stunner, Katie would never know, but the other woman didn’t look particularly offended for the moment, and Katie found she likewise couldn’t muster up the energy to feel sorry, misunderstandings aside.

Pointing a finger up, Katie started to explain herself, but the stranger looked up first, pieced the story together. A smart cookie, then--which only made Katie’s heart beat faster. “Yeah, it was--um--well, hahaha,” she blustered, rubbing the back of her head. Still, she was feeling bold off of the rush of getting a kiss, one that was far too quality for her partner to be strictly heterosexual, and she thought she might just try her luck, just to see if there was some Christmas magic in the air.

“Not as often as I’d like to, but hey, we could always start over…?” Katie offered with a wink, gesturing to the space under the mistletoe. “Definitely wouldn’t mind a chance at a round two.”

Totally thought you were someone else wouldn't sound very convincing without the stammer, the flush, the body language of accident. Now that Ayesha recovered enough to hold her wit, her blood pressure steadied, she could see that.

But this stranger was nice in her own unpolished way. Ayesha curled her hands against her purse strap, still terribly unsure how she confused a shorter, pasty-white redheaded girl for her fiancé, or how she successfully confused Ayesha for someone else, as nothing in their encounter shared similarity with what Ayesha expected. Wishful thinking then? Was she wanting to just try women? Ayesha covered her consternation with a polite smile.

Politeness, she found, made problems go away faster. This problem was the mix-up, not the girl, though her offer would magnify the mix-up into a bigger problem. Poor form for a woman about to be married, she supposed.

So she smiled, shook her head, let the sound of her earrings fill the space around crowd cacophony. "I'd agree if I met you a year ago, but I have a fiancé who I thought you were for a minute." A long minute. A minute that would leave her puzzled for ages. A minute that left her tasting her own mouth for all the soft differences between them — especially the smooth face which, she found, she quite liked better. Maybe it was time to buy Adel a razor.

"Have a good night" sounded like an appropriate parting for a stranger whom she knew by lips alone. Better that she find Adel sooner than later, before she spent too much time thinking this over.
