Astriana was working on cleaning Abaven in her lap, trying not to allow her anger to get the best of her. Rumors had spread like wildfire about what had happened over at High Reaches. Supposedly, some candidates (she wasn't sure from which Weyr) had made sharding idiots of themselves. That wasn't the worst of it though, some bronze rider decided to shoot off to the Senior Queen of High Reaches. What kind of loud mouth would have the nerve to make all of Western look bad? Yes, they believed in working for what they had, not based on the color of a person's dragon. However, that didn't mean they didn't know how to act in someone else's Weyr.

Another hatching, another batch of dimglowed candidates Impressed. Why did he bother feigning surprise? Dragons didn’t care who behaved and who didn’t when it came to Impression, it was the humans who made the rules.
The only thing that mattered was that Astri was unhappy. It never went well, when she was unhappy. He needed to swiftly n** this in the bud, before her wrath was directed at him. “Hey. Can I tell the world I love you?” He asked. It was a cheesy line, but maybe it would distract her.

Astriana heard a voice that made her look at him, arching one of her eyebrows. Despite the look on her face, her eyes held a gentleness to them for him, something she never thought she would have. He had come into her life and gotten more comfortable than she would have thought. What was more confusing to her, is that she had let him do so. Not at first, but he finally seemed to worm his way in.
"I think we have discussed this..no,"she said firmly.

R’elien ignored her refusal and leaned forward. He moved close to her ear before whispering, “I love you.” Astri was the light in his life he’d never expected to find. She was different from the people he’d imagined he’d end up with, but she was better. Sweet, salty, and fun to be around.
“So rumors tell me there were idiots on the sands,” he prompted. He expected that was why Astri looked so annoyed. She hadn’t Impressed yet, and while he was sure she would, he was also sure that it upset her to see candidates who weren’t on their best behavior Impress.

A very gentle tinge of pink painted Astriana's cheek, when he whispered those three little words. Oh, he could be so cheesy sometimes, but her heart beat in her chest. Why did he have such an effect on her, she wasn't sure she had an answer to that. She just knew that he was someone she felt comfortable around, who made her happy. When he mentioned the hatching at HR, she frowned slightly.
"Yeah, that is what I have been hearing around. I don't know if they were from HR or from Western though, but supposedly there was hitting an egg. Not only that one of OUR bronze riders decided to mouth off to the senior queen. What sharding idiots,"she growled.

R’elien put his hand on her shoulder in attempt to calm her. He knew she’d be angry about that. How could she not be? The entire Weyr was, and worried about the repercussions. “I heard about that,” he said, shaking his head. “I can’t believe any candidate would be that dimglowed. Honestly, attacking a defenseless egg.” He tsked and shook his head. He still couldn’t believe it.
He wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his head playfully on hers for a second. “Hey. I love you. Come on, Astri. No more thinking about which Weyr is more dimglowed, let’s take a day and go to the beach.”

"I don't know what they were thinking, R'elien, I really don't. You would think, logic dictates, if a baby calls out for help, you go to the rider of their parents. How hard is that, open your mouth and let them do the opening or tell you what to do. Did you hear someone also fell asleep on the sands?"she asked, looking over to him as she felt the pressure of his hand on her shoulder. A soft sigh came from her lips as he suggested she forget what happened. She just couldn't, she hated the fact that she knew their candidatemaster would take it hard on himself. He had the last time, she remembered the look in his eyes when they had been lectured.

“That’s where they got confused,” R’elien grinned at her. “‘Logic states...’ Logic didn’t come into it. They tried to save the baby out of pure emotion. Someone fell asleep?!” He narrowed his eyes and considered. He’d heard it’d been an early hatching. But to fall asleep...
To be a candidate was a great honor. Didn’t they realize that? “I hadn’t heard.” He bent to kiss her cheek. “Once you’re on the sands again, you’ll show them how to act. You’ll Impress!”

"It shouldn't be something to be confused about, on the sands, you must always be thinking. Emotions have their place, but there is a lot riding on how we act out there. One wrong move can have very dire consequences, we both know that. And yes, standing up and they fell asleep right there where all could see..least from the rumors I have heard. Yes, I suppose I will just have to show what being a candidate is all about,"Astri replied, standing a little taller. She felt his kiss on her cheek, a soft smile in her eyes.

“You forget that even though we know those things, we’re only human. A’ral can lecture all he likes about controlling emotion and thoughts, but candidates are going to get scared. They’re going to be surprised. They’re going to be disappointed or sad, or angry. Every hatching is different,” he shook his head.
“Everything we do has dire consequences,” he agreed. “We’ve seen that.”

"I know we are only human and we feel things, but we can also control which of those thoughts get picked up. It takes training, but it is something that is important when being a candidate. I would not like to be responsible for our teacher blaming himself for what we do wrong. You didn't see the look in his eyes when he spoke to us after the hatching that happened out at that beach, R'elien,"she told him, her words soft since it was just them for the moment.

“He shouldn’t blame himself,” R’elien agreed. But he figured A’ral always would—he felt responsible for his candidates. It was his job to teach them. “That hatching was a bit of a fiasco,” he grinned, in memory. “But I didn’t see as much misbehavior as I heard about in this one.”
He kissed her cheek. “You’ll Impress this time,” he said. “Then, maybe you can help A’ral.”

"I guess he just sees it as we are his responsibility, if we mess up, it reflects bad on him. My uncle would say it is like that for wings too, when one of you falls, the rest do in a way. And I hope you are right, I want to finally have a dragon of my own. You, my uncle, my twin..you all have amazing dragons,"she told him.

“It is that way for wings,” R’elien agreed. “It’s probably best to think of the other candidates as wingmates. You have to get along,” he teased her, “one of them will be saving your life one day. And you’ll be saving theirs.” He knew Astri was shy. It was an endearing trait.
“You’ll impress,” he said. “I’m sure of it. Kaeth says so, doesn’t he?”

Astriana made a face when he suggested she see the other candidates as wingmates. How was she supposed to do that when some of them were dimglows? Sure, some she had no trouble thinking of them as wingmates, but others..she wasn't so sure. The thought they would be responsible for her life made her snort a moment.
"You know, I suppose you are right, but doesn't mean I like the idea. And you really think I will impress?"she asked.
